LVM2 installation with a 2.6 Kernel HowTO

First, and very rough draft.  Feel free to criticise, correct mistakes and ask questions, maybe I'll even be able to answer them.
<B>INTRODUCTION</B>
Many linux users will eventually use multiple partitions for a variety of reasons.  Choosing good partition sizes is a task of trial, error and often luck.
LVM (logical volume managment) is a nice little method that makes looking after your hard drive space a breeze.  To put it simply, LVM takes over the space you allocate to it and manages the partition data on there for you.  Using LVM you can dynamically change the size of your partitions (though it is easier to grow a partition than to shrink it).
This document shall hopefully show you how to get a working LVM2 system with a 2.6 kernel.  Things are different with LVM1 and/or pre 2.6 kernels, there is a lot of information out there, I suggest you look elsewhere if you plan on using a an older kernel.
An example will give a clearer picture than a dry discussion.  To start with we need a working AL system.  For this example we have two scsi discs, sda and sdb.  Firstly 3 partitions were created on sdb, a 75mb ext2 partition for /boot, a 150Mb reiserfs partition for / and the rest of the drive was given over to an LVM partition (set the type to be 8E in cfdisk).  Swap was put on sda along with two reiserfs partitions, each 2GB, to use as /usr and /var until they can be moved to LVM partitions.  It is intended that /usr, /var, /tmp, /home and /opt shall be managed by LVM.
<B>INSTALLING LVM</B>
<B><U>Firstly, back up your important data.  </U></B>
AL was installed, and then upgraded to a 2.6 based system with the latest packages in current.  The kernel was compiled by hand, ensuring that the device-mapper option was enabled.  Then the system was rebooted, and tested to make sure the upgrade was succesful.
Now the system is ready to be moved over to LVM.  Firstly install lvm using pacman (note we install lvm2, not lvm which is also available):
#pacman -S lvm2
This will install device-mapper and lvm2.
<B>SETTING UP LVM</B>
Now we should be ready to set our LVM partition up on sdb.  This is listed in /dev as sdb3.  Use ls -l to show what this is linked to:
lr-xr-xr-x    1 root     root           34 Feb 17 00:13 /dev/sdb3 -> scsi/host0/bus0/target1/lun0/part3
Now we can use the pvcreate command to initialise the partition as a
physical volume:
#pvcreate /dev/scsi/host0/bus0/target1/lun0/part3
Physical volume "/dev/scsi/host0/bus0/target1/lun0/part3" successfully created
Now we need to create lvm groups, the first group will be called vg1 and will be used to control the LVM partition on sdb.  Eventually a second group will be created, vg0, and used to control LVM on sda.  You can manage both drives under one group, but I like the extra control that this system gives me.  Use the vgcreate command to create groups:
#vgcreate vg1 /dev/scsi/host0/bus0/target1/lun0/part3
Volume group "vg1" successfully created
To display information about a group, use the vgdisplay command:
#vgdisplay
--- Volume group ---
VG Name vg1
System ID
Format lvm2
Metadata Areas 1
Metadata Sequence No 1
VG Access read/write
VG Status resizable
MAX LV 255
Cur LV 0
Open LV 0
Max PV 255
Cur PV 1
Act PV 1
VG Size 8.34 GB
PE Size 4.00 MB
Total PE 2135
Alloc PE / Size 0 / 0
Free PE / Size 2135 / 8.34 GB
VG UUID PMOmxM-CrhW-UIMd-P1L6-NMbS-UwCy-5CSeje
Now we can add logical volumes to the volume group using the lvcreate command:
#lvcreate -L1G -nlvopt vg1
Logical volume "lvopt" created
This created a 1GB partition called lvopt in the vg1 group.  lvdisplay will show you information logical volumes:
#lvdisplay
--- Logical volume ---
LV Name /dev/vg1/lvopt
VG Name vg1
LV UUID YsDZsm-goB3-BGGG-J4Sg-Z0rZ-Cobf-JcP2Py
LV Write Access read/write
LV Status available
# open 0
LV Size 1.00 GB
Current LE 256
Segments 1
Allocation next free (default)
Read ahead sectors 0
Block device 254:0
using ls /dev/vg1 should show lvopt too.
Now we need to create a filesystem on the partition.  This is exactly the same as for standard partitions.
#mkreiserfs /dev/vg1/lvopt
LVM partitions are mounted in the normal way, ie:
#mount /dev/vg1/lvopt /opt
will mount our new partition under opt.  The new /opt partition was entered into /etc/fstab
/dev/vg1/lvopt /opt reiserfs defaults 0 0
If you have problems, you could try /dev/mapper/vg1-lvopt which is the raw entry for /dev/vg1/lvopt.
Before trusting /usr or /var to LVM, we should check that the system will work properly.  Firstly we need to edit rc.sysinit.  Find the section for mounting partitions and change it to read:
stat_busy "Mounting Local Filesystems"
/bin/mount -n -o remount,rw /
/bin/rm -f /etc/mtab*
/bin/mount /proc
/sbin/vgscan
/sbin/vgchange -a y
/bin/mount -a -t nonfs,nosmbfs,noncpfs
stat_done
This will start LVM up so that any LVM partitions in /etc/fstab will mount.
Next we need to edit rc.shutdown so that LVM will stop properly.  Find the part that unmounts the filesystems and edit it to read:
stat_busy "Unmounting Filesystems"
/bin/umount -a
/sbin/vgchange --ignorelockingfailure -a n
stat_done
LVM2 uses locks in /var, obviously, if /var is umounted the lock won't be accessable, the ignorelockingfailure option overcomes this.
Now the system should be ready for using LVM.  To be safe run the commands <B>vgscan</B> and </B>vgchange -a y</B> before rebooting.
If the system boots without errors, we can start moving our /usr and /var partitions over to LVM.  Using the lvcreate command, 2 partitions were created in the vg1 and then formatted with reiserfs, lvusr and lvvar.  They were mounted under /mnt/tmp and the data from /var and /usr copied over to them:
#mkdir /mnt/tmp
#mount /dev/vg1/lvvar /mnt/tmp
#cp -av /var/* /mnt/tmp
#umount /mnt/tmp
#mount /dev/vg1/lvusr /mnt/tmp
#cp -av /usr/* /mnt/tmp
The entries for /usr and /var in /etc/fstab were suitably modified and the system rebooted to check that it worked.  Once the system was working properly, the temporary partitions used for /var and /usr were deleted and the rest of sda partitioned for LVM.  A new LVM group was created for managing this drive, vg0.  Paritions were created for /home and /tmp and the rest of the system could be installed.
<u>Note:</u> Since installation, / has stayed at around 50% usage, /tmp hasn't been moved to lvm yet.  As Arch uses
<B>OTHER IDEAS FOR INSTALLATION</B>
If you don't have 2 hard drives, several other options may be available to you.
A minimal AL install needs around 550MB for / (if compiling the kernel yourself), if you don't  mind having a / this big, you could follow this method ignoring the temporary /usr and /var partitions.  After copying over the files and editing fstab, typing "init 1" into the shell should put you in single usr mode, you can safely delete the files in your old /usr and /var (make sure the lvm ones are umounted).
Create temporary /usr and /var partitions in the space you want to use LVM, Install LVM, but don't create any groups etc.  Tarball /usr and /var and store them somewhere (use the -p option to preserve permissions), i.e. a cd-rw.  Set the system into single user mode and create the 8E partition.  Reboot into single user mode and then create your lvm setup.  untar /usr and /var onto the volumes once they are ready.
<B>Resizing LVM partitions</B>
The commands lvextend and lvreduce are used to resize lvm volumes.  After resizing it is necessary to let the filesystem know.  As an example, /dev/vg1/lvopt is initially at 1.1GB, a further 1GB is needed.
#lvextend -L+1GB /dev/vg1/lvopt
will add 1GB to the volume. Or you can give the new size directly
#lvextend -L2GB /dev/vg1/lvopt
Read the man page for more information.
Afterwards you need to resize the filesystem.  For reiserfs there is no need to umount.
#resize_reiserfs -f /dev/vg1/lvopt

Notes on the draft:
1.  *At this point*, the "make modules modules_install" doesn't appear to be required. If I figure out differently, I'll post asap.
I was just being ultra safe.  I had a few problems with my initial installs, this is one thing that I found on a mailing list.  The problems were solved shortly after that so I kept the step.  I've removed it for now, if anyone has any problems and this sorts them out I'll put it back in.
2.  Following these instructions blindly will, at the point where you suggest rebooting to insure LVM is working, reboot to empty /dev/mapper/* partitions you'd previously suggested be changed in fstab. An obvious 3AM mistake; those need to be swapped so that the reboot to test LVM (I assume, to test the initscripts and the validity of the vg's) is clearly done before making any fstab changes. I caught it, and did the reboot as suggested, using my saved (original) fstab. The "test reboot" did as expected, the initscripts reported all was OK, and I had no problems.
Strange it worked for me, but then the /dev/mapper/ settings were put in when I was having problems and were left over as they worked.  Did you run vgscan and vgchange first?  I've edited that part slightly to try and make it more clearer and changed the fstab entry.
3.  It was originally stated that /tmp was going to be LVM-ized, then later it's stated that since / usage wasn't high, it wasn't done. Since Arch uses tmpfs, I (and likely others) don't know if making /tmp an LVM voume is possible and/or suggested. I also didn't move it over; I'll watch usage (I have 512MB + 390MB of swap).
Maybe someone who knows about tmpfs can enlighten us.  I know very little about it.
4. Note that there is no real need to have multiple drives to follow this procedure - just adequate space. I have a single, 120GB drive - and I imagine most have something larger than 8.4GB today...I made an empty slot (typed as LVM) right behind /, of almost 20GB. I made 2GB partitions for the initial /usr, /opt, and /var behind the LVM slot. Now I have that available (and an LVM partition that should last longer than I do...) .
I completely agree.  It is most likely possible to reclaim those by resizing the LVM partition.  Not something I can try though.  Sdb is a 9GB scsi drive and sda is an 18GB with the first 10GB given over to windoze.  So for me getting that space back was necessary.
FWIW, my / is 195 MB, it's reiserfs so 32 MB is eaten by the journal, and
(this is base only) it's using 30MB (+ the journal) right now. 32%. I don't run a particularly 'lean' system, once filled out (but prior experience w/Arch says 200 MB s/be adequate). Will post later as to whether that's 'adequate', or not. Pour moi, anyway.
My / is 150Mb and only 50% full,  I did use the method of putting everything over to a 500Mb partition.  With compiling the kernel by hand and cleaning /var as necessary, I found that it was very close, at points I was down to under 10MB. If I screwed up the kernel compile (forgot to add device-mapper at one point) I would run out of space on the next compile, despite make clean and make mrproper in /usr/src/linux.
What about /tmp ?
For me its still on /, I still haven't needed to change it. / has constantly sat at 50% as far as I can see.
Thanks again for a fine document. I know Arch OK, but I'm certainly no expert, and I'd only used LVM for a short period when I had SuSE on my wife's machine. Didn't really get to know it (guess I'm gonna now! LMAO and looking forward to it). That I was able to get through both the BETA install, AND the LVM 'upgrade', successfully, on first try and in one sitting, impressed me, anyway.
K
This is only the second (working) install of LVM I have ever had.  I mainly wrote the how-to (first ever) as everything I could find was on LVM1 and 2.4 kernels.  Things are quite different with LVM2 and 2.6, so I made a few mistakes and just thought I'd try to help other people avoid them.  I'm really happy with my LVM, resizing as and when I need it.  Hopefully I'll get some time soon to write a brief bit on lvm.conf.  There's a default one in the lvm2 tarball.
Thanks for the comments.

  • [Solved]Can't finish The Hobbit installation with virtual drive

Is there any way that I could combine two iso files into one so that I could finish The Hobbit installation process.  I always get stuck at the point where it asks for the second disk and gnome-disk-utility won't unmount the first ISO because it's still in use by the installation process.
    I tried doing this
    $ sudo mount -t iso9660 -o loop disc1-mountpoint
    $ sudo mount -t iso9660 -o loop disc2-mountpoint
    $ sudo mkisofs -l -J -R -o dvd.iso disc1-mountpoint disc2-mountpoint
    and here's what I got
I: -input-charset not specified, using utf-8 (detected in locale settings)
    Using BILBO000.ICO;1 for /bilbo.ico (bilbo.ico)
    Using AUTORUN000.INF;1 for /Autorun.inf (Autorun.inf)
genisoimage: Error: '/media/dc/bilbo.ico' and '/media/live/bilbo.ico' have the same Rock Ridge name 'bilbo.ico'.
genisoimage: Error: '/media/dc/Autorun.inf' and '/media/live/Autorun.inf' have the same Rock Ridge name 'Autorun.inf'.
    Unable to sort directory
NOTE: multiple source directories have been specified and merged into the root
of the filesystem. Check your program arguments. genisoimage is not tar.
So here's what I'm currently trying right now.
    $ cat HobbitCD1.iso > The_Hobbit.iso
    $ cat HobbitCD2.iso >> The_Hobbit.iso
Okay, so doing that didn't return any errors, now to see if I can finish the installation with the new ISO file.
Nope it still asks for disk 2.  So the real question is how can I force the first disk to unmount so that I can replace it with the second disk?

progandy wrote:Why don't you try this?
Manually mount the first iso image, begin installation, forcibly unmount old iso, mount new iso, continue installation.
Oh, you can forcibly unmount something?!
    (read the manpage for umount)
    Oh, whaddaya know, you can.
    from umount's manpage
-f Force umount (in case of an unreachable NFS system). (Requires kernel 2.1.116 or later.)
I dunno why I didn't think to check the manpage for umount.  Sorry, my bad.
EDIT: Okay, so forcibly unmounting the iso didn't work.  I was able to force umount, but I couldn't disassociate the /dev/loop2 from the HobbitCD1.iso file.  losetup doesn't seem to support forcing.  I think that I better just install this under Windows and then copy and paste the installed files to my external hard drive and then move them onto my laptop from there.  =/ Not really what I was looking for, though.

  • [SOLVED] Installation with LUKS encryption--ok to grub, then black s..

Installation with LUKS encryption--ok to grub, then black screen
I'm trying to install ArchLinux  onto an existing Luks encrypted HDD, formerly dual boot with Fedora 17.
First,I left the Windows partition unchanged and erased the root partition. Then I booted to the ArchLinux, mounted and decrypted the LVM encrypted volume group partitions and followed along with the  Beginner's Guide Installation Instructions. This progressed without a hitch; near as I can tell. I can boot to grub select kernel interface, but no further.
So I forgot something...the encrypted volume. I found the archLinux page dm-crypt with LUKS and tried my best to follow along encouraged by the first line, "The installation of a LUKS-encrypted system is largely the same as installing an unencrypted system."
And that's where I stand. I edited the grub.cfg to boot to run level 3, but the kernel doesn't seem to load at all and never starts to give me the chance to enter the password. So now I'm not sure if its the LUKS encryption after all. (maybe its my _next_ problem)
    Any ideas?

    Sure, here's the layout,
    # lsblk -fa
    NAME FSTYPE LABEL UUID MOUNTPOINT
    sda
    ├─sda1 vfat xxxx-xxxx
    ├─sda2 ext4 xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx /boot
    └─sda3 crypto_L xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
    └─luks-93xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx (dm-0) LVM2_mem xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
    ├─cryptVG-root (dm-1) ext4 xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx /
    ├─cryptVG-swap (dm-2) swap xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx [SWAP]
    ├─cryptVG-home (dm-3) ext4 home xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx /home
    └─cryptVG-local (dm-4) ext4 local xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx /usr/local
I left sda1 alone. Reinstalled on sda2 (/boot) and sda3 (cryptVG-root). I also remade swap. I didn't see an opportunity to set /usr/local, so I may simply free up this space after copying the data. But for home I set up a sub directory for the new install and left the old user in place (something I've been wanting to accomplish for some time as anaconda is not so nice to old user files).

  • Oracle 10g R2 installation with ASM+RAC

    Gurus,
Need some suggestuon on Oracle 10g R2 installation with ASM and RAC option.
We have found many documents on the Oracle, HP, HP-Oracle CTC and third party web sites, but nothing that is specific to this particular combination of separate
ORACLE_HOMEs, ASM and 10g RAC CRS. It is unclear for me from the documentation how this combination of ASM and 10.2g RAC may best be installed.
The high level steps i got after reading lot of docs as follows - but i am not sure whether these are correct or not. if they are correct, can any one share their experience/notes please?
    1) Install CRS
    2) Install RDBMS for ASM HOME - create separater oracle home for ASM instance using OUI
    3) Install RDBMS for RAC Database Home - create separater oracle home for RAC database using OUI
    4) Create ASM database using DBCA -
    5) Use dbca to create database.

Oracle provides 'paint by numbers' tutorials called 'Oracle By Example'. (Go to OTN, check under the Training tab)
They have one for a Windows based ASM/RAC that you might want to review. Not your specific environment, but the steps will be dag-nabbed close.
    I recommend walking the path (http://otn.oracle.com >> training:OBE >> Database 10g Release 1:VMWare:Installation
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/obe/obe10gdb_vmware/install/racinstallwin2k/racinstallwin2k.htm

  • Multiple independent devices on Single installation with independent monthly rental charges

    Hi Experts,
4 Independent single register based devices installed (Tech+ Billing) in a single installation with same time slice. There is only monthly rental charges for each independent meter. No meter reading required and NO consumption charges. I believe we can do this scenario. Can anybody advise for any consequences?
Note: number of devices can change from 2/3/4.

    Hi,
How are you going to satisfy the meter read orders to make it billable without entering the meter reads? If you do not need any meter read, can't you use any flat rate / time dependent prices? The amount output will be same but you will not be using any settle* variant program. You may use any Lumsum* variant program. If you do not use the devices for entering meter read, do you have any requirement of installing the devices with the utility installation?
    Thanks.

  • Can Packagemaker create installer with content files outside the bundle?

I'm trying to create an installer with Packagemaker, but the content files need to be outside the final bundle because they're shared with a Windows installer.
I thought I could create a symbolic link to the external folder, but instead of linking from the installer, it copied the files into the bundle. Any idea how to do this, or if it's even possible? I need to be able to do this on 10.3+, if that's relevant.
(I can give a more specific scenario if this isn't clear enough)
    Thanks!

    zekel wrote:
The main issue I'd be worried about is that the external files (which are quite large) won't have the appropriate progress bar. The external files are around 1GB, while the internal files are in the 30MB range.
How about installing a secondary installer with progress bar that copies these files from the correct location. Your postflight script can just kick off the newly installed file copier.
How's this sound for a hack...
Have a launcher script copy the installer to /tmp, then modify the package to point my files. (I'm installing from read-only media.) It would then open the modified installer which would pull my files from the DVD. This would probably work better (read: at all) if the files aren't compressed inside the package. Do you know if that's an option?
No, sorry. The internals of a package are quite specific. You need PackageMaker itself to build them.
Things like the receipts are non-essential at this point, only because if I can't get this to work then we will continue to use our terrible installer which leaves none of those things. Those shouldn't be too much trouble if I can get the rest to work.
There are some 3rd party installers like Installer VISE. The sad part is that they tend to make the MacOS X Installer look good.
If the guy responsible for that is interested I'll show him Inno Setup, but we have a working Windows installer, so he probably won't want to mess with it.
I agree, but tell him about it anyway. The next time you have to build a Windows installer, he could use Inno Setup and get it done in a couple of hours and then have time to help with the mess that is software deployment on MacOS X.

    Hi Bala,
I want to configure my Database with & without DNS. (Will try both installation in different servers)I think, you have already received a link on very good article about Oracle RAC installation without DNS and DHCP (I mean Jeffrey Hunter's article).
There is one more about Oracle RAC installation with DNS and DHCP (http://gjilevski.com/2011/10/05/build-two-node-oracle-rac-11gr2-11-2-0-3-with-gns-dns-dhcp-and-haip/).

    Hi All,
I was not able to solve the problem with MS SQL 2000, but I was able to resolve the issue with MS SQL 2005.
You have to chhose the following settings while instalation,
Service Account - Select one of the following options:
    1) Use the built-in System account for each service and choose Local system or Network Service.
    2) Use a domain user account, and enter the user name and password.
Under Start services at the end of setup make sure that SQL Server and SQL Server Agent are selected.
    Authentication Mode
    1) Select Mixed Mode (Windows Authentication and SQL Server Authentication).
This mode is required for a Java or ABAP+Java system.
If you choose this mode, you have to set the password for the sa login.
Note: The password for the sa login must comply with the Windows password policy.
    Collation Settings
    1) Select SQL collations (used for compatibility with previous versions of SQL Server).
    2) From the drop-down list select Binary order based on code point comparison, for use with the 850 (Multilingual) Character Set.
    I hope this helps!

  • Building installer with 8.5

I have built an application with Labview 8.5 and am trying to build an installer with the 8.5 runtime engine for a stand alone program.  However the exe builds okay, but when I try to build the installer I get a message saying some components need to be load from real-time module 8.6.1 and it asks for the directory of the nist.id.   I am not using any real time in my application.  It seems as though this started popping up after I installed Labview 8.6.  Anyone have any Ideas.
    Regards,
                  Wade

Thanks for the Reply and link.  I just placed the Labview disk in the disk drive and selected that directory so the installer builder could locate the file it was looking for, and then cached it.  However I am curious as to why all of the sudden it needs the real time module 8.6.1. If my only additional installer is RT engine 8.5.  Before I upgrade to NI DAQ 8.8 that came with LV 8.6 I hadn't gotten this request for the RT Module components while only requesting the RT engine for an additional installer.  Anyways its no big deal now that I have the file cached.  It doesn't ask anymore.  Thanks.

  • SAP ECC6.0 installation with Oracle RAC

    Hi Expert,
Current we working on SAP ECC6.0 installation with Oracle 10G RAC on AIX 5.3. The RAC are running on two nodes (servers). And we are using GPFS filesystem (not running on HACMP).
Overall we had completed the Oracle RAC installation (CRS+RDBMS) and tested the oracle failover and it work find. Now we want to start with the SAP installation (with HA). In the SAP installation documentation, it did request to create a virtual hostname on the node and execute the sapinst scripts with below command line.
    #./sapinst SAPINST_USE_HOSTNAME=ascs00
But if we are running on Oracle RAC + GPFS do we need to specify the virtual hostname? If not, which hostname i should use to install the HA for SAP?  Please advice.
    Regards.

And then I'd continue with the documentation at:
SAP on Oracle => SAP on Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC)
There you can find several installation guides for windows/UNIX/Linux
