LWAPP - AP -- Controller Bandwidth/ Delay Constraints

Hi
Does anybody know if there are figures for minimum bandwidth/latency that need to be adhered to between an LWAPP AP and a Controller ?
I know the Controllers should be located with the AP's as all WLAN traffic is passed through the controller, however I have a client that wishes to install 1 LWAPP AP in a lab environment to test authentication etc and register it back to a WLC 2006 across a 512kb WAN.
Performance is not a concern as the AP would only be used for testing etc.
I'm thinking this should work albeit rather slowly , but should provide the functionality the client is after.

The delay setting is same as the STP setting. If necessary, enter config spanningtree switch forwarddelay 4-30 to configure the controller STP forward delay in seconds. The default forward delay setting is 15 seconds.

  • LWAPP to Controller communications

We are installing our first NM-AIR-WLC6 module. The router has very strict ACLS applied to the AP facing fast ethernet interface.
The LWAPP documentation list the ports required to be open for WCS to WLS communications, but does not list the ports needed for LWAPP to WLS.
We'd like to use IP subnet discovery, but even with DHCP option 43, we'll still need a list of ports that need to be open.

    Hi,
    there are two problems that we have identified;
    1. The VCI string in the manual is wrong. It should be: "Airspace.AP1200" it is case sensitive and the dot is part of the string.
After having fixing the above problem and the AP get the correct DHCP reply meaning an ip address, correct subnet, the gateway ip address and via option 43 the ip address of the 4400 controller. The following is seen on the analyser trace:
    2. The AP does a layer 2 broadcast to connect the wifi controller, then a layer 3 IP broadcast on the local subnet. The AP is looping between those two.
It is poor coding to still have the AP do a layer 2 Bcast and a layer 3 IP local Bcast on the same subnet while it has received a DHCP reply telling it that the WiFi controller is on a differend subnet.
Btw we're using the latest version for the 4400, released early March 2006.
The only thing we haven't tried yet is to fall back to layer 2 mode and have the AP connect to the 4400 and get new firmware. We'll try that this afternoon.
If needed I can sent the analyser trace, we're using ethereal.

  • WLC-2100 with LWAPP APs in headquarter and branch?

    Hello,
can one controller 2100 be used to manage APs in the headquarter and in branches?
We plan to use 6 APs-1131 in the HQ and 4 APs-1131 in the branch. Is this scenario supported by a AIR-WLC2112-K9 in the HQ?
What do I have to check regarding the WAN (bandwidth, delay) and the LANs (Switches, VLANs,...)?

Before trying the stuff below, you might want to connect your AP back to the network, go to the controller CLI and issue the following command:
    debug capwap detail enable
Watch watch messages are displayed when the AP fails to join.
I can't my docs on how to do this, so I can't be sure these instructions are corrent...
You may want to try and clear all the LWAPP/CAPWAP configuration that the AP has learned. While holding in the mode button, apply power to the AP (release the mode button after about 5 seconds). Via the console port, you should be able to get to a command prompt. Go to enable mode (password should be "Cisco" or "cisco" [without the quotes]. Once in enable mode, try issuing a "clear lwapp private-config" command. If that doesn't work, try working through the CLI help to see what clear options you have. You then might want to try and manually set up the AP. Sample commands to give it an IP address and point it towards a WLC are below.
    #clear lwapp private-config
    #lwapp ap hostname mynewap
    #lwapp ap ip address 10.77.244.199 255.255.255.224
    #lwapp ap ip default-gateway 10.77.244.220
#lwapp ap controller ip address 172.16.1.50

  • Can't change LWAP association to different Controller

I have a customer with LWAPs that are associated to a specific controller. They want to change the controller it's associated to, but it keeps returning to the original controller. They've tried assigning the Primary controller via WCS/WiSM, resetting the AP to default config, then resetting the LWAP.....the LWAP still associates with original controller.
A new LWAP out of the box goes to the correct controller with no problem. So, there is still something in the previously assigned controller to an LWAP that is not being cleared. Can someone tell how we can do this?
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi Richard,
    Sorry about that :(
    You could try these two methods;
Configuring Static Parameters to Register the Access Point to a Controller
Using the password that the controller sent to the access point, enter into EXEC mode on the access point console. When the access point is running LWAPP or a recovery IOS image, you can configure the static IP address on the access point, the IP address on the controller, the access point hostname, and the default gateway IP address by entering these commands:
    •lwapp ap ip address ip-addr subnet-mask
•lwapp ap controller ip address ip-addr
    •lwapp ap hostname ap-hostname
    •lwapp ap ip default-gateway ip-addr
The access point with a recovery IOS image uses the static controller IP address to register to the specified controller and download the current LWAPP image. After the access point successfully registers to the controller, it receives configurations from the controller. The access point static hostname and the IP address of the controller are deleted from the access point configuration file. However, the access point static IP address and the netmask and the default gateway IP address are not deleted.
When the access point is running a recovery IOS image, the commands to configure the static IP address on the access point, the IP address on the controller, the access point hostname, and the default gateway IP address are always enabled.
These commands are disabled in the following cases:
•When the access point is running an LWAPP image.
•When the access point has an LWAPP configuration file in NVRAM.
•When the access point is in REGISTERED state with the controller.
The access point console displays the following error message if you enter any of these commands when they are disabled:
    "ERROR!!! Command is disabled."

  • Converting AIR-LAP1131G-A-K9 to LWAPP

I noticed that this AP was $350 as compared to the AIR-LAP1131AG-A-K9 which is $450. The latter comes with an A radio which I don't need. But it comes shipped LWAPP which is good. Can I convert the cheaper one to LWAPP?
    The models are:
    http://www.cdw.com/shop/products/default.aspx?EDC=873163
    http://www.cdw.com/shop/products/default.aspx?EDC=1386702

Sure you can. First, download the LWAPP image and do the following:
    Autonomous to LWAPP (Shortcut)
    Requirements:
    • Image file (The recovery file has the prefix “rcv” in the image name, such as c1200-rcvk9w7-tar.122-15.JA.tar);
    • AP is connected to the Wireless LAN Controller; and
    • AP can ping the TFTP server where the image is located.
    Procedure
    1. Copy the recovery file to the AP using the following command:
    archive tar /x tftp:/// flash:
    2. Let the AP boot on this image:
    boot system flash://.bin
    3. Reboot the AP.
    OPTIONAL
    • DO NOT ALLOW THE AP TO JOIN THE WIRELESS LAN CONTROLLER.
    • IF POSSIBLE, type the following commands:
     clear lwapp private-config (This will bring the AP to factory default.);
 clear lwapp ap ip address
     clear lwapp ap hostname
 clear lwapp ap controller ip address
    4. Let the AP connect to the Wireless LAN controller.
    OPTIONAL
If an AP refuses to join the Wireless LAN Controller, type the following command from the AP:
    lwapp ap controller ip address

  • Max delay and Min delay on same data path

    Hello,
I am trying to set up timing constraints (both max and min delay) on a data path between two combinatorial elements.
    I use set_max_delay -from [get_pins pin name] -to [get_pins pin name] 6 -datapath_only
set_min_delay -from [get_pins pin name] -to [get_pins pin name] 4
I checked the timing report and I see that the max_delay constraint is satisfied but the min_delay is not. What can be the reason behind this?
Also, when i comment out the first line (max_delay constraint), I see that min_delay constraint is satisfied.
Can't a datapath have both max and min delay constraints?
Any help will be really appreciated.
    Thanks!
    -Kamath

Be very careful about trying to set max/min delays on a portion of a path (i.e. not from a valid startpoint to a valid endpoint). Doing so is called path segmentation. When you do so, the max/min delay gets applied to the portion of the path you specified, but the rest of the path (between the startpoint and the set_max_delay -from and from the set_max_delay -to to the endpoint) are no longer constrained at all.
There are extremely few reasons to want to do this. I second the question "Why do you want to do this?"
That being said, you can set both a max and min delay on the same path (or path segment, if you insist on segmenting the path). The set_max_delay overrides the setup requirement, and the set_min_delay overrides the hold requirement. If the two values are too close together the tools will not be able to satisfy both; all timing checks are done at both process corners (max PVT and min PVT) - the ratio from max to min is generally around 3:1, so if the set_max_delay is less than 3x the set_min_delay the tools will be unable to satisfy both (due to real, physical limitations).

  • LAP not joining the controller

    Gents
I have 1 AP out of ten not joining the controller. I connected the access point to the network and I checked its boot. the access point reaches LWAPP Discovery" and then give me console input. I hard reset the access point and I hard coded an IP address for the AP the AP joins the controller, but when I reset it to assign it to another controller it did not join again.
why the discovery process is not showing the DHCP option 43 configured and DNS for CISCO-LWAPP-CONTROLLER configured on the DNS. All the access point is operating normally except this one. it has many certificate inside, why a hard reset did not work to solve the problem?
    Please advise
    Thanks,

Does the LAP have a valid IP address?
Can the LAP ping the WLC managment IP address?
Console into the LAP and in enable mode, type the command "lwapp ap controller ".

  • Possible to convert autonomous AP to LWAPP via CLI?

    Hi,
Probably a silly question but was wondering why it is not possible to convert an autonomous AP to LWAPP by using CLI commands?
For example we have over 300 access points to convert and thought about using Linux to automate the task but seems there is only a windows conversion utility.
    Cheers,
    - Trevor

    Hi Trevor,
You can convert AP to LWAP using CLI but this is entirely dependent on the model of AP you're dealing with. 1230, for example, requires the conversion tool. 1130, 1240 and 1250 can be converted using CLI. Here it is ...
    Requirements:
    • Image file (The recovery file has the prefix “rcv” in the image name, such as c1200-rcvk9w7-tar.122-15.JA.tar);

    OPTIONAL
    • DO NOT ALLOW THE AP TO JOIN THE WIRELESS LAN CONTROLLER IN ORDER TO USE THE OPTIONAL COMMANDS BELOW.
    • IF POSSIBLE, type the following commands:
     clear lwapp private-config (This will bring the AP to factory default.);

  • LWAPP Conversion of 1252 AP failing

Hello. I am having trouble performing a simple autonomous to lwapp conversion on a 1252 .11n AP. It is the LWAPP model number, but of course it shipped with Autonomous code on it. So I have to convert.
I have version 3.4 of upgrade tool. I create the flat file with the one AP in it and enter all the necessary information. I use the upgrade tool TFTP server and navigate/select the image file: exact file is -> "c1250-rcvk9w8-tar.124-10b.JA3.tar". When I select upgrade I get an error indicating the recovery image is not a valid one.
Does anyone know what I am missing here? Can someone outline the steps? This is my first conversion attempt as I have been running 1000 Series APs for the past 3 years.
    Thanks

Here is direction from a member on this forum:
It took me a while to get this information, so thought I'd share. Here it is:
You cannot use the upgrade tool to do the IOS to LWAPP for the 1250 APs.
Here is a method to do the conversion.
    *Method 1 : ( Mode Button )*
    1. Install an external TFTP tool such as tftpd32 tool from http://tftpd32.jounin.net/
    2. Assign IP address in the range 10.0.0.2 - .254 ( Ex : 10.0.0.3) to the tftp server (your laptop or pc).
    3. Download the IOS to lwapp image onto the tftp's root directory. Use http://www.cisco.com or
    http://tools.cisco.com/support/downloads/go/IPCheck.x?defAdv=N&sftAdv=N&image=c1250-rcvk9w8-tar.124-10b.JA3&filepath=/swc/esd/02/crypto/3DES/281235915/guest&filename=c1250-rcvk9w8-tar.124-10b.JA3&advUrl=null&isk=Y&defInd=N&mdfid=281235915&sftType=Autonomous%20To%20Lightweight%20Mode%20Upgrade%20Image&optPlat=&relVer=12.4(10b)JA3&fileId=271159&treeMdfId=278875243&treeName=Wireless
    4. Rename c1250-rcvk9w8-tar.124-10b.JA3 to c1250-rcvk9w8-tar.default
    5. Make sure you set the IP address on the BVI interface of the AP if not set. Set it in the 10.0.0.x range. Default is 10.0.0.1.
    6. Connect the Ethernet port on AP to your TFTP Server ( Laptop )
    7. Hold the mode button and power off the AP.
    8. Power back the AP while continually holding the mode button for 20-30
    seconds.
    *Method 2 : ( Archive Command )*
    1. Install an external TFTP tool such as tftpd32 tool from http://tftpd32.jounin.net/
    2. Assign IP address in the range 10.0.0.2 - .254 ( Ex : 10.0.0.3) to the tftp server (your laptop or pc).

Did you ever get this one resolved? I am having similar issues with my LAP1142N. I am trying to put it back on a DHCP assigned address, but cannot figure out a way to get the AP do that. I had assigned it a static address, ran into the issue that you reported, and now trying to put it back on the DHCP segment, but it does not get the address. Weird!
