M55 laptop replacement HD recommendation plz

The hard drive in a Toshiba Satellite M55 laptop has begun to give a CRC error message...obviously it's replacment time.  Device Manager says it's a HTS541060G9AT00...specs say that's an Ultra ATA100.  I'm not sure these are sold locally anymore.  What have other Toshiba Satellite owners been using?  Is there a good on-line set of instructions?
TIA,
Stan.

I am replacing the hard drive in my M55-S3293 laptop.  The enclosure for the hard drive has a protrusion that prevents my replacement hard drive from plugging the pins in.  Can that be removed? You can see in the picture the shiny, white protrusion.

  • Laptop pads/coolers recommendations

I use my laptop primarily on my lap (hense the term laptop) but with the macbook it gets a little toasty after a few hours of use.
I have not gotten up the nerve to reapply the thermal grease, void the warranty and based upon this link the results are questionable.
    macdevcenter
(the link appears to be down check back later)
Anyways what solutions are available for keeping the laptop on some sort of pad/plastic platform that will sit on my lap.
I googled laptop coolers and came up with some but most are rather larget and well unwieldly especially when you consider this is for a 13" laptop.
I'm not sure what would work best but I'm thinking something that is based on convection may be a good idea, i'd rather not want to have fans, or lose a usb port.
If anyone has any recommendations please let me know.
    Thanks in advance

Don't know if this helps but post below is what I did and am using. I had posted it on MBP forum. In a nutshell, I use Vantec Lapcool 4 (portable unit that gets powered either by AC or USB, and it fits in my bag nicely) and it keeps everything much cooler.
Also as an update, when I originally posted this note, the temperature reading was based on AC charger mag'd on. Untethered, the CoreDuoTemp stays much lower (~40c) most of the time and the case is cool to touch everywhere.
Since I have MBP (metal case vs plastic case), YMMV!
A Different Perspective on Heat Thing...

Just wanted to share my experience on MBP heat after all the latest firmware/sw updates, and using a cooler pad.
My MBP used to get pretty warm. I must say that it definetly was warmer than any of my 5 past laptops - though not much more than any of them at a given locally hot spot. In other words, all of my past laptops got just as warm on certain spots but not all over. On MBP, I find that in addition to the local hot spots, the heat propagates throughout the case, and over time, it gets quite warm.
Then it it occured to me that MBP is the first metal cased (Al) laptop I've owned. All the others have been plastic casing. Al conducts heat much more efficiently than polycarbonate.
Since I use MBP as my primary computer, it spends much of the time on a desk or conference table. That said, I was looking for a stand that raised the aft end of the MBP so that the keyboard is at much better angle to my hands. In doing so, I decided to get a stand that also acts as a cooling pad with couple of fans built into it.
What a difference. Heat is convected right out of the bottom of the MBP case and very little heat is transfered onto the upper surface. In fact the only place that gets slightly warm is where the HDD is and its a combination of both the disk working and my palm resting on it as I type.
So I am guessing that heat many people are experiencing is not so much of the CPU constantly running hot (I'm sure some are running hotter than others) but heat soak effect that occurs as the tempurature continues to build up over time.
I'm using Vantec Lapcool 4 and it works for me. Just for info, I've been on my MBP for almost 3 hours now and CoreDuoTemp readings have been between 40~60c, except few times that the CPU was under full load that spike the temperature up well past 70c but it is expected. The case is just above ambient room temperature.

  • ITunes authorisation and laptop replacement?

Hello.. I had to send my Laptop for repair but was eventually given a replacement laptop in return...Luckily I had everything backed up just incase, but now I'm 1 down on my 5 authorisations, is there any way to reclaim this back? I've been tryin to look for contact details for apple with no luck..
So far ive got my PC, Work PC and Laptop authorised however only got 1 available to me.

Sorry, but there's no way for you to deauthorize systems you no longer have access to until you reach the five-system limit. Once you've reached five authorizations for that account, there will be a button in your iTunes Music Store account information (log into the iTMS in iTunes and you should see it) that can deauthorize all your system, at which point you can then reauthorize the ones you will be using.

  • Laptop replacement- HD interchangeable?

I have a HP G60 that was dropped and needs repaired. I would like to know if anyone knows if the Seagate 9EV134-020 HD that came with this machine is interchangeable with any other HP laptops? Repairs for my current laptop seem to be expensive. Any help? Thanks..

most laptop hard drives have adapters that have to be removed from the drive, and re-used on the replacement drive. They can be different in design for each laptop.

  • Laptop Replacement Advice Lenovo .....AMD or Intel

So I want to replace my current laptop is a Dell Insprion 6000 it has a Intel Pentium M 1.60Ghz 1gb of ram with a 80gb hard drive with XP.
I have been looking at both laptops (thin and light weight) and netbooks.
I really like the Lenovo Thinkpad Edge but i can either get
AMD Athlon Neo X2 1.50 GHZ with 4gb memory and 320gb harddrive
     Or
Intel Pentium Intel Core 2 Duo su7300 processor 1.30Ghz with 4gb memory and 320gb harddrive
Use would be home use with MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint, internet used to finish up college. Possiblity to use for light busiess use for a few powerpoint presentations.
Which one would be the best? Does anyone have another brand and model they would reccommend.

How is power consumption an opinion when it's a value you set in the BIOS, and something that every chip mfg. seeks to lower? You better go tell them that, because they're spending millions of dollars creating lower voltage processors so laptops run longer. I guess those LV and ULV processors they have out are just marketing, right? Heck, let's do away with the Atom and just stick i7s in everything!
Yes, and unless you have a shoestring budget, Intel is always going to be better for the consumer's lifestyle.
I know this question was posed to Acheron, but my last Intel purchase (C2D E6750) was my first Intel purchase. Before then I had always used AMD. Let's see: AMD 386, AMD 486, Athlon XP 2200+, Athlon 64 3700+. Back then, any DIY used AMD because they had Intel beat. Intel was more expensive while being less efficient, and were really just mainstream systems. But, as I stated earlier, when Intel released their Core architecture, they stepped in front of AMD permanently. Why do you think AMD bought ATI? Intel is eating away at their already-small marketshare, and they're trying to diversify.

  • Laptop Replacement Question - Would appreciate advice!

    Hi Guys,
After having issues with my new Macbook Pro applecare told me i would be recieving a replacement, and then sent me shipping labels through email.
Now im just wondering what i have to give back to apple, i bought,
15.4" Macbook Pro Unibody 2.93 GHz with 4 Gigs of Ram
    Apple Care
    iLife Preinstalled
Along with that i have my copy of MacOSX, the power adapter, all the instruction books and manuals and the original box
So what out of all this do i have to ship back, i know i can keep apple care and iLife, but will they ship me a brand new laptop in the original box with all the accessories or will i have to keep all my accessories?

    Hi Almeida5,
I take it they're replacing it with one of the current models? Because currently there isn't a 2.93GHz MBP, so did you confirm that you'd be receiving a 3.06GHz MBP?
I'll agree with what everyone else said... you need to contact Apple. Even if you call and ask to speak with someone else, I'm sure they can see the agent's case notes that you're working with on the replacement. Even another person at Apple would be in a better position to answer this question than anyone of us.
With that being said, I had a unit replaced a few years ago. The only thing that they required back was the unit itself. I didn't have to send any of accessories, software, cabling, etc. Now, they certainly preferred I did (in the box) but it wasn't critical.
iLife '09 comes pre-installed in all brand new computers from Apple, so that'll be the same. Did you mean iWork '09?
Regarding Applecare, they don't "just transfer" it over to a new unit. There's an extra process that occurs that you need to agree to regarding the terms. You can get a pro-rated refund for the remainder of the plan or have the remainder of the plan rolled over to the new machine (there'd be a loss of time coverage).
Again... the next best course of action, really the only course of action, is to get on the horn with Apple.

  • K9vgm-v AMD Athlon 64 x2 6000+ replacement hsf recommendation?

Having gotten great advice on my last post here's another question. My AMD heatsink fan is running so fast it's too loud to concentrate. What are the recommendations for a reasonably priced replacement? (The chip is not over-clocked).
    Thanks!

  • Laptop users: Any recommendations for a scratch disk for Illustrator CC?

    Hello everyone.
I have been reading into scratch disks and their use with Illustrator, Photoshop, etc. It seems most of the discussions have been about desktop systems though. I am currently using just a 13" late 2013 Macbook Pro w/retina. 256GB SSD and 8GB of RAM.
I actually have a new 1 TB external USB 3.0 WD drive, but I believe it's a 5400rpm and might not be fast enough to be used as a scratch disk? If not, I was thinking of either getting a 7200rpm USB 3.0 external drive, or a USB 3.0 external SSD. Perhaps something like these?
Amazon.com: U32 Shadow™ 240GB External USB 3.0 Portable Solid State Hard Drive SSD: Computers & Accessories
Amazon.com: HGST Touro Mobile Pro 1TB USB 3.0 Portable External Hard Drive, Black (0S03559): Computers &
Illustrator CC is currently just set to use my startup disk as the scratch disk. I don't believe I have run into any problems yet, that might have involved Illustrator needing more than my 8GB ram, and needing to use the scratch disk, but I am not totally sure, and I just want to get one setup anyways, for future use. I am also looking into using this with some light Photoshop use in the future also.
Those of you who use a laptop for Illustrator and other Adobe programs, what do you use for your scratch disk?
Also, where does Illustrator store these scratch disk temp files on a Mac? I have not been able to find any useful information through Google searching so far. Mostly just stuff related to Photoshop scratch disks. I would like to check the location these files are supposed to be stored to see if there's anything taking up HD space that I could take back, and also as a guide to see how much scratch disk space I should look into getting.
    Thanks!!!

Yes, you could do it. Remember to follow licensing restrictions. Here's an article on how to import after installing the operating system:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25773
Keep around locked in your office an external Firewire hard drive with partitions formatted for both Intel and PowerPC Macs containing all the applications and the operating systems and default user documents you want to keep. These can serve as the basis for the migration assistent import.

  • I need to cool down my G4 MDD 1.25 DP - Replacement fan recommendations

    Hello,
This is my first post to this forum. My G4 was very unhappy and so far the information here has given me great direction in my effort to upgrade my mac. Now I need to lower the temperature... I think.
    Heres some background:
About a week ago my G4 crashed and the original 80gb hard drive stopped mounting. It was really warm inside the case and I'm guessing something overheated. Disk Utility gave me the "underlying task failure" error. I was frantic to retrieve the data I neglected to back-up. Two days later I booted it up with Disk Utility again so I could write down the HD errors and the hard drive mounted. Since then I made a carbon copy of the OS and migrated it over to one of the two new WD 160gb ATA/100 drives I put in (thanks to this list).
It was like a new Mac and didn't crash for 6 days, until last night, it crashed hard again. Got the blue screen twice. I decided it was too hot so I opened the case door a third of the way, got a window fan, and literally laid it over both my cinema display and the top of the Mac. Waited ten minutes and it stared up and ran fine.
Can anyone give me the low down on the best most compatible fan to get, something I can swap out.
Do I need to replace more than just the main fan and where is the best place to get this stuff.
Could the power supply components be the issue?
Thanks in advance for any insight or responses.

    vejvoda,
the blue screen is a software issue. When overheating you would get a kernel panic with black screen and white text. A computer will generally be quite warm inside. Run your Mac with the side panel open and check that all fans are running: PSU, case and CPU. You should remove excessive dust accumulation from fan intakes and exhaust (after shutting it down of course). If the fans check ok you need no replacements.
The blue screen would indicate you should do some maintenance like booting the install CD/DVD and running disk repair (not verify) repeatedly until you don't get any more errors. After that booted from your HD you should run DU again and repair permissions.

  • Which of these 3 laptops would you recommend

    Hi,
I got it down to the final 3 laptops that I like. Which one would you suggests. I'm looking for something that's fast, has lots a hard drive space, good monitor and a blue ray player would be nice.

All 3 of these machines are solid! My personal opinion would be to get the Toshiba, love the battery life and they just make some great machines. I've never been huge on Vaio's, I feel you pay a little too much for the name. As far as the Samsung goes, I am in love with both Samsung models my store has in stock, only thing I'm unsure about is how they will do. We don't have a vast track record for Samsung and consumer laptops.
All in all, these machines are all rock-solid but I'd have to lean towards the Toshiba as my personal opinion.

  • Laptop replacement ,, comes with warrenty?

say i got my macbook replaced due to malfunction and that it still had 3 months of warranty
would my replacement have only 3 months of warranty or would i get an one year warranty?
    thanks

Any service replacement units that you receive will have your current warranty coverage applied. If you have 3 months left, that is what will transfer over. If that is 3 months of your original one year hard ware warranty, why not purchase the applecare protection plan? Any Applecare Protection plan that you have on the original will also transfer to the replacement, so you would have 27 months of coverage instead of just 3 left.
Pretty rare to get a replacement computer though, usually hardware components are replaced/repaired as necessary first.

  • Using a licence on replacement laptop

Adobe have conveniently made phone and chat help unavailable at the moment so I can't get help with this problem...
I purchased Elements 13 and used the to computer licence to install it on 2 computers.
I have had  one of those computers; a Macbook Air laptop, replaced under warranty.
The replacement laptop was set up using Migration Assistant so all settings, apps and data came across to the replacement unit.
However Elements knows this is a new (i.e. 3rd) computer and will not allow me to use the licence key another time unless I de activate the laptop that has been replaced.
Naturally this is not possible because the old laptop is with Apple and the hard drive has been cleaned.
How do I get Elements 13 to work again remembering that Adobe Chat and phone help is not available?

You will need activation support: Go here:
    Activation & Deactivation Help
and scroll down to "Still need help? Contact us". Keep going even when it seems you're getting looped back to where you just were (you're not; it's just that the page is identical) and eventually you should be able to start a chat session and get it straightened out.
Adobe has a recess till Jan 2, but I believe that chat should still be available.
