Mac 10.6 Paperport 12 Equivalent?

Just switched from PC go an iMac and busy setting up things which are really pretty straight forward and in fact so much easier than PC. I have a Brother MPC 490CW, multi function printer, scanner, fax which is up and working on the iMac. However re the scanning I got ScanSoft Paperport 11 with the unit and ran that on the PC - but can't seem to get Paperport for Mac. Is there a good Paperport equivalent available I could use? Thanks. Douglas

You can apparently use Image Capture, included with Mac OS X. Take a look at this Brother support page. You may need the most recent scanner drivers, though I can't find detailed information on Brother's site about that.
Brother also apparently included Presto! PageManager as a Mac equivalent for Paperport, so if you haven't tried that, it should have been bundled with your MPC. It may need an update for 10.6, though, which apparently is available through the developer, NewSoft.
Hope this helps.
Hope this helps.

    Not really, although some employees may show up here.  This is a user - to - user forum.

    There is an equivalent, but you need to be running LDAP and your users need to log on using that LDAP identity. (But that may be what you are already doing...)
    See http://mattfleming.com/node/190 for details. If you search the web you'll find more information on how to do it. (It can be done with SAMBA for instance). It is complicated. You might also ask in the Mac OS X Server forum.

  • Love iPhoto but is there a PC equivalent

    I'm loving producing great calendars and books using iPhoto '11 and friends are amazed at the quality and ease of production on my imac. One friend has asked, who's not ready to move to the holy world of mac, is there a PC equivalent to iPhoto as he'd like to do something similar on his PC. I suggested probably, that's one reason I bought my 27" mac, but I'm not sure.
    So, does anyone know if anything exists that's as clever and great as iPhoto but for the PC?

    On second thought, from my previous post which is still the best answer , they might look at Google's Picassa software which is sort of iPhoto-ish. Plus it is free, so no harm giving it a try.

    Thanks for your response and yes I understand what you are saying. Maybe you could explain why "email users" hate HTML email with a passion.
    These tend to be technical users who have a more purist attitude about email. They prefer that email be text-only, and consider HTML formatting to be superfluous for most messages. And I do think they have a point. If you have 100 plain-text emails and 100 HTML emails, you will notice that the HTML emails take up noticeably more disk space. And if the HTML email senders have loaded down their default emails with background images, signatures with corporate logos and winmail.dat attachments and all manner of embedded ornamentation, and (I never even thought people went this far) animations, then a simple email reply like "Thanks! I'll see you this evening," ends up carrying an tremendous additional amount of file size and network bandwidth overhead just to carry those six words. It not only means more disk space consumed, but it ripples all through the system: More space is required for backing up and archiving your emails, plus more mail server space and network bandwidth are consumed per message. Purists see this as an incredible waste of resources.
    The message body of at text email can simply be "Thanks! I'll see you this evening."
    The HTML version, at a bare minimum, must be
    {html}
    {p}"Thanks! I'll see you this evening."{/p}
    {/html}
    (replaced angle brackets with curly brackets so Apple Forums won't try and format it)
    Already that's almost double the amount of characters required to send the message, just to format it in HTML. And that's if no fonts, styles, graphics, or media have been applied. If they are, the number of actual characters sent balloons dramatically.
    I'm in the middle. I don't hate HTML email, I'll even turn it on when I think formatting will help my message. But I like to use disk space efficiently, so I've set plain text as my default for sending messages.

  • Creating a new folder containing links to files or applications

    I am creating a portable workstation for a group of people using a Macbook. To make their job easier to find relevant tutorials, I wanted to give them a way to access the tutorials grouped in different ways.
    I was planning on adding a number of folders each containing a mix of tutorials (video files), but don't want to have copies of these as this would take up unnecessary hard disc space.
    In the PC world, I would add a folder to the desktop, and drag shortcuts to the folder, pointing to the videos of interest. The shortcut is essentially a link to the file on the drive, and is of negligible size. What is the complimentary way to accomplish this on the Mac? I thought of using the automator but unsure if there would be a solution - I'll invest the time to learn it if this is a possible solution, but my quick try only showed my lack of knowledge :~).
    Anyone know of a good way to accomplish this on a Mac?

    There is an equivalent to the PC "shortcut", it's called an "alias" on a mac. There are several ways to make an alias, two of them are (1) control clicking on the file of interest, (2) from the File menu in the Finder once you've selected the file you want to point to.

  • How do I force url links to open in Firefox only ?

    I use IE-Favorites not only for internet url shortcuts, but also as a normal folder (which it is actually). I work with Firefox on a Windows PC with plugin "PlainOldFavorites" for the bookmarks.
    On my Mac , I would like the equivalent function (IE folder for bookmarks in Firefox) but the same plugin does not work on Mac. Which plugin would have that functionality ?
    To have access to the same folder (or a synchronized copy of Favorites) ?
    Thank you

    Solution is very simple, Just choose firefox as your default browser.
    Follow these steps :
    * Open '''Options'''
    * Click on '''Advanced'''
    * Now open '''General''' tab and click on '''Make FireFox The Default Browser'''. See Image below.

  • Bridge HTML Gallery Coding

    I used Bridge to create a photo gallery using the HTML Gallery Template to place on a website.  I need the html page that is created to have a different name than the default index.html as well as contain my own header and navigation buttons.  That's easy to fix.  Here's the problem.  When a person clicks on a thumbnail a larger image opens up and just above that large image a person has a choice of clicking on the words Previous, Index, Next.  Previous and Next work as expected taking you to the larger view of the image that is either before or after the one you are viewing.  If I click on the word Index it takes me to a view of the thumbnails but not the page I had edited and renamed.  Where do I find the coding to change the link for the word Index so I can change it from the default index.html to what I renamed the page to?  I've found pretty much everything else but not this link.  I'm sure I'm looking right at it and not seeing it!
    Thanks for your help.
    Sue

    I’ve only looked at this briefly, but as far as I can tell:
    The “Index” link points to index.html inside the content folder, not the index.html in the root of the web gallery folder. That’s the file you need to rename and add your extra code to.
    If you rename index.html, you’ll also need to change the name throughout all the code or you’ll get a “page not found” error. This is best done with a text editor that can do multi-file find and replace, such as TextWrangler for Mac (not sure of Windows equivalent, but there must be many out there).

    despite the long porcess of proving myself to be a student to apply for the discount, the price was still fairly costly. after i had puchaced it i started to download it onto my windows operated pc laptop. it came in two parts that i had to download but for some reason when i downloaded the second half i would get an error message and this went on for a good number of months. i eventually gave up because i had exams and then cam back to it a few months later to try and get the rest of the programmes. it still didn't want to download so i spoke to some guy on the adobe website. after a series of generic questions i was told to delete all the adobe product off my computer and he will send me  a new file. however when i opened the link he had sent me a free trial to lightroom. i went onto the adobe website to then find that procution premium CS6 was discontinued. i then went on to twitter to complain and then had a long conversation with adobe. they then sent me the links but when i open them it said i was unauthorised access the file, this happened 5-6 times and so we both gave up.
    So now im just curious as to what happens now. i have recently purchased a mac and still want some equivalent form of software because i did pay for it and have not been refunded.
    if someone could find me a solution or get me in contact with someone who can quickly solve my problem, please do not hesitate.

  • Ventilation issue with Retina 15"

    Hi,
    I bought my Macbook pro Retina 15" on September.. It's my principal work tool, so i'm worried about a problem i have for 3 weeks now (approximately since the last Moutain Lion update, but I'm not sure).
    My Macbook was perfectly quiet (as every macbooks), but now, the two fans are ... noisy, they start with the OS and stopped only when I power off the Mac. The noise is equivalent to the one made when I power on 2 virtual machines at the same time before this issue (not a big noise, but quite annoying).
    I don't know if the Moutain Lion update is responsible, but i want to know if I'd rather go to an Apple Store now (2500euros, I would ben a little disappointed if my mac was broken, but i prefer controling it), or if anybody had a similar problem, or if it's just the update ... The noise don't seems to be something broken, just fans hight speed.
    Thank's for your answers,
    Lucas

    Please download, install and run iStat Pro to determine fan speeds and temperatures. Post back with a screen shot of the results.

  • Sync Folders in Automator

    I need to sync files between my computer and my usb flash drive. I used to use the Briefcase tool when I had a windows computer, but i notice now that mac doesn't have an equivalent.
    It was recommended that I use the Sync Folders action in Automator, an action that I first had to download form the Apple Website. After downloading and installing this action, I opened Automator to use it, and I get this error message:
    * -[NSNull length]: unrecognized selector sent to instance 0xa0384020
    Does anyone know what this means and how to fix it?
    Or
    Does anyone know of a better alternative to using automator's sync folders action?

    I want an answer to this also.
    I use an iMac that runs 10.4 and a Mini that runs 10.5.1 and I want a way to keep a directory in sync on the iMac, the thumb drive and the Mac Mini

  • Can't boot from Ubuntu partition after upgrading to Yosemite

    When i go to Disk Utility the Ubuntu partition appears as it always have, i had installed since Mavericks refind to boot from any partition. Now refind doesn't work and the alt/option key doesn't work either. Does anyone know a way to fix this?

    A extensive report already written is in the Ubuntu stacks as
    Dual boot Linux and Yosemite
    Basically you need to follow http://www.rodsbooks.com/refind/yosemite.html
    wherein it explains that Yosemite is using a new LVM bootup from within the Recovery Partitions 10.10.
    This messes up REFIT/REFIND tools  which have previously installed Partition 1.S
    See my current Table below , wherein << are my comments
    Current GPT partition table:
    #      Start LBA      End LBA  Type
    1             40       409639  EFI System (FAT)    << old preferred site for REFIT/REFIND tools
    2         409640    154061023  Mac OS X HFS+ << main Mac partition
    3      154061024    155330559  Mac OS X Boot  << Recovery 10.10 , installed by Yosemite update, used to start MAC boot.  BUT is not shown by Disk Utility, to prevent its naive deletion which would kill the MAC boot.
    4      155330560    156598271  Mac OS X HFS+ << old Recovery 10.9, simply retained
    5      157869786    228772129  Unknown << My Ubuntu partition
    6      228772130    236765969  Linux Swap << which was shortened by 200 MB to make room for 7)
    7      236765970    236974814  Mac OS X HFS+ << installation site of REFIND.  Though 4) could have been used, there is a possibility that Apple might have future plans for this small 4) partition.
    With 7) created (see detail below),  my REFIND install command under MAC, within Downloads/refind-bin-0.8.3/ was:
    sudo ./install.sh  --alldrivers --ownhfs  /dev/disk0s7
    There was still required the edit if refind.conf.sample specified in Yosemite.html, which I named refind.conf.edit1
    This was copied with:
    sudo cp refind.conf.edit1  /Volumes/macefi/System/Library/CoreServices/refind.conf
    macefi  is my name for the MAC  /dev/disk0s7 mount point, equivalent to /dev/sda7 under Linux
    CAREFULLY do read Yosemite.html,  as the instructions here are too terse by themselves!!!!
    There are 2 routes to  boot Ubuntu, and then creat 7) with GPARTED
    a) If you can access the GRUB shell under an old REFIT/REFIND installation, partitions will be shown by:
    grub> ls
    Presence of a Linux file system can be confirmed by a command like:
    grub> ls (hd0,gpt5)/
    Output of
    grub > ls (hd0,gpt5)/boot/grub/
    should include a grub.cfg file.  Then you can boot as usual with
    grub > configfile  (hd0,gpt5)/boot/grub/grub.cfg
    After boot up, start GPARTED
    b) Alternatively boot with the Ubuntu install disk, and choose the Demo option
    Open a text console, and get admin proviledge with:
    $ sudo su
    # gparted
    Using GPARTED, unmount if necessary  any terminal SWAP partition, such as my 6) above
    Then shrink the SWAP partition end by a trivial 200 MB,
    Create a HFS+ partition in like my 7) for a coming REFIND installation
    Note, that a file /etc/fstab contains a SWAP partition specification, which should be edited for automated SWAP start.
    # sudo blkid  /dev/sda7
    will report the SWAP space specs LONG  uuid code.  This can be copied into memory by dragging the mouse over the uuid
    Then SHIFT-CONTROL-C  will copy it into memory.   Start an edit with:
    $ sudo nano /etc/fstab
    delete the old swap uuid, and paste in the replacement with
    SHIFT-CONTROl-V
    and swap should mount upon reboot, or with:
    $ sudo swapon -a
    Check with:
    $ free
    which should report none-zero swap space.

  • Assistance with upgrade paths?

    I'm planning to upgrade my system/software and would appreciate any comments the forum's readers may offer. I have an ongoing small photography business and want to make sure I don't disrupt it by changing more than I can handle. Pending changes include:
    . upgrading hardware from Quicksilver dual 1.0 to 24" iMac
    . implicit in that upgrade is OSX 10.4 --> 10.5
    . upgrading Photoshop from CS2 to CS3 to get performance benefits of Intel technology
    . adding Aperture to workflow and photo management
    . adding 1TB drive for additional storage/backup
    Current setup: probably 100 photo/job folders, with a couple of hundred customer folders, and thousands of photos and versions of photos. These are on a dedicated internal drive. iPhoto used for proofs and display, with duplicate photos of many of the files on the dedicated drive. iPhoto and iTunes libraries share a dedicated internal disk. I think a separate iPhoto library for business photos might make sense. Need to look at that and ease of switching between libraries.
    If I were to do all this at once, I can envision being out of business for weeks. What seems to make sense is a sequence like:
    . decide on backup strategy and disk map. (QS has 4 internal drives, and probably about 350GB of data, total. Too much to fit on an internal iMac drive and allow growth. The 1TB drive will easily handle growth, but needs to be set up as a RAID, or individual disks, and with partitions to handle tasks. Not sure yet how to handle backup. I think I want to avoid Time Machine for a while until it matures, but need more research to choose a replacement.
    . upgrade the hardware and migrate files. Run this way for a few weeks to shake things out.
    . upgrade Photoshop from CS2 to CS3. One concern is Photoshop CS2 performance on an Intel mac. I could accept equivalent performance to the QS system, with the future move to CS3 providing the performance benefit. Would it be equivalent? Is CS3 significantly different from CS2 that I would have a big learning curve to overcome?
    . add Apperture
    Thanks for getting this far with this kind of "stream of consciousness" rambling, and if you have any illuminating comments from your experiences, I could sure use the help.
    Ben

    Perry,
    Thanks for the reply.
    The Apple store, too, recommended the Mac Pro. It's not a bad idea, and I've thought about it. I could use 2 of my current 4 internal disks in the Pro and not have to find an external enclosure for them. Expandability is not so much an issue, I don't think. The only additions to my QS are USB ports and a SATA card for features that the iMac has. But come to think of it, that's exactly why expandability is worthwhile. If the QS had been an iMac instead, it wouldn't have been able to benefit from USB 2.0 ports and SATA drive speeds. It would have been out of date sooner. I'll think about that. Maybe with a less expensive Dell 24" monitor. Apple's monitor prices are high.
    I'm not too concerned about USB devices, since they "hub" pretty well. I know what you mean about port availability, though; I counted my devices the other day and ended up with 16! i couldn't believe it, except I always seem to be unplugging something to plug something else in. More Firewire ports is probably a very good idea. I've now got 3 devices, and I would expect in the future there will be more "must haves" that will need Firewire access.
    The idea about multiple accounts is one of those "Duh!" moments. It makes even more sense on the laptop. But I'm going to do that on both machines. Not sure of the email separation, though. I can see the benefits, but I'd have to log into each user account to see each email account, right? Even with that, it might be better.
    Thanks for the tips.
    Ben
