Mac Book Pro 17 Core Duo & Leopard: Graphic/Display Glitches

Since I installed Leopard, the display on my MBP has the strangest behavior. On a regular basis it displays many graphic glitches such as horizontal and vertical black lines, some pixelization, windows don't refresh properly and so on. The MBP is also connected to a Apple Cinema HD Display and the glitches appear on both monitors. I have to restart to make them go away.
I've been looking all over the place on these forums and on the internet, and found that it looks like a recurrent problem with some ATI cards, (my MBP has the Radeon X1600/256Mb). Some people were able to fix it by installing a missing extension from ATI, but it does not seem to apply to this particular model of MBP or graphic card.
I did a clean install, zap the pram, verify the cables, nothing has fixed it so far.
While in Tiger, I have never had such a problem, so I am really wondering if anybody out there has had the same problems, and if a solution has been found. Any hints?
Thanks for your help.

I've had similar problems, now with the additional problem of frequent, unrecoverable crashes. "Freezes" may be a more appropriate term. I get strangely colord single-pixel lines across the screen both in regular browsing in firefox and when playing back video in Final Cut Pro. Sometimes these lines stay on the screen when I move the windows around, sometimes they can be "erased" by moving the window away and moving it back. I have had a very bad time indeed, and no apparent solution.

  • Mac Book Pro Intel Core Duo 2 overheating and turning off

I've been having this nasty problem with my Mac Book Pro Intel Core Duo 2 (2.8 Ghz, 4 MB 1067 MHz DDR3 RAM, bought in August 2009) for quite a while, but recently it's intensifying.
It starts to overheat badly, and then randomly turns itself off if not connected to the power.
When restarted, the clock is set to January 1st, 2001.
Needless to say, the overheating impacts on my capacity to use the computer the way I want, destroying my fps in games and slowing the processor while I use Ableton Live to produce music.
I tried to look around, but I cannot figure out if this is a known issue of some sorts, or a problem related to this very computer: I did read on the forums a suggestion to run the Hardware Tests from the Snow Leopard DVD by booting the system with the DVD in while holding d, but nothing happens if I do so.
    Thank you all in advance!

  • Mac Book Pro 17 inch to 23 inch display blue screen freezes.

Can any one help me, my mac book pro 17 is freezing when I connect it to my 23 inch apple cinema display. It works perfectly on stand alone, but once I connect the 23 cinema it toggels back and forth from blue screen on both screens then freezes, then works fine for a couple of hours. I sleep the system then when it wakes it freezes. I have disconnect the display then reconnect, this is really annoying.

No, you can't upgrade the GPU on a MaBook Pro - it's soldered onto the logic board.

  • Mac book pro quad core

I was wondering if apple was ever going to come out with a quad core mobile computer and if you know if they are. Do you know when this will come out like will it be next year or two years from know? I would like to know this because Im thinking of buying a macbook pro 15 inch sometime next year but if they are going to come out with the quad core version within the next two to three years i would consider waiting for it.

I was wondering that same thing since I was ordering a new 17" MacBook Pro. I decided that I could wait forever for the next better thing of get one now. Also, you can pay the price for being an early adopter. I suspect the Apple will charge extra for the quad and then you compatibility issues (possible issues) with software and maybe even the OS.
One of the reason I purchased the Mac was because I'm tired of blue screens and HP. I didn't want to pick up any new issues that come with being on the bleeding (good name for it by the way, I've spilt plenty of precious red stuff) edge.

  • Video Latency Issue On The Mac Book Pro 2.4 With Leopard 10.5.5

Gear: Macbook Pro (early 2008 model) - 2.4gigs cpu 2gigs ram - all the latest updates... no other applications running during the test
Hi folks. Currently I am having a latency issue when trying to record directly into iMovie using the built-in microphone and iSight camera. Basically, the video seems 5 - 7 frames late to the audio. I found that a good way to demonstrate this issue was simply doing a few handclaps as a test.
This is a quick handclap test displaying some video latency during recording with the iSight camera in iMovie 08.
    - Just download this link — and import it into iMovie 08 - Here is a link to a zip file that you can import into iMovie 08 - It's 2.5meg - .m4v export - Also it was recorded as standard format and audio midi setup app: audio was set to 44.1:
    http://www.brainbeast.com/37/clap-1-large.zip
    - Play from beginning. As soon as you hear a clap sound — pause with the space bar - then back up before the clap with the left arrows
    - Then click the right arrow several times until you hear the beginning of the clap sound ( This is the audio: start frame)
    - Now — you will notice the video still has an open hand. At this point click the right arrow, counting as you go several times until you see the hand close. This is the amount of frames that the video is late to the audio. For me it seems to be an average of about 5-7 frames late.
Unfortunately iMovie 06 nor QuickTime will not scrub audio as you go frame by frame with the arrow keys so you cannot test it there. If you have some other application such as final cut Pro, you could test it with that.
! IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO PERFORM THE TEST YOURSELF:
    - Just record a new movie in iMovie 08 - using the built-in mic and i-Sight camera — and see if it is also slightly out of sync
Note: to be as fair as possible — I did a slow handclap ( in order to not challenge the frame rates) - also, in order to get the maximum volume I used an open palm ( clap on the palms with your fingers spread out as you can see I did.)
Please let me know if this latency appears to be the same for you as it does for me.
Q: Is it just my machine or does it happen to you too?
Q: Does anyone know a way around this latency issue?
Q: Does anyone know if Apple is aware of this latency issue?

I am experiencing the same incredibly frustrating problem as well. When I record directly into iMovie
'08, the video lags the audio by a fraction of a second.
I have tried shutting down all other applications and having only iMovie up. Same problem.
I tried recording the video into QuickTime instead of iMovie and experienced the same problem. (Which makes me think it is perhaps a hardware or operating system issue.)
I tried the technique suggested here and on other sites of "double-dragging" the clip from the Events pane into a project (one normal drag and one Shift+Cmd drag) so that I had the audio and video as two separate tracks. After muting the audio on the video track, I then attempted to slide the audio over to sync it with the video, but even down at the 1/2 second zoom setting I didn't seem to have enough granularity to move the audio so that it was exactly in sync with the video. I was wishing I could use the arrow keys or something like that to move the audio just one frame at a time.
All I want to do is record a video directly into iMovie '08 - this would seem to be something trivial to do!

  • How to upgrade MAC Book Pro with OS X 10.5.8 to OS X 10.6

I have a MAC book Pro (Intel core 2 Duo based) HW Rev 3.1. I am trying to upgrade to OS X 10.6.
When i tried inplace upgrade it errored out with a message that I cannot upgrade. I wiped the disk clean using Disk utility and tried booting with the 10.6 DVD. I start the installation and errors out with the same error "cannnot upgrade". I did not get any further information on why it is not letting me install. I am using the CD from another MAC Book Pro I got few months back. Any help is highly appreciated.

The install DVD from the new model MacBook Pro will not run on your older MacBook Pro. The 10.6 install DVD is machine-specific.
You need to purchase the retail version of Snow Leopard to install OSX10.6 on your older Macbook Pro.

  • Unable to open/run anything on Mac Book Pro

I have a new Mac book Pro (january)
    Running:
    Snow Leopard
    Duo Core 2.66 Processor (13")
    4 Gigs Ram
    500 gig Harddrive
    Disk Partition:
    Windows 7
    105gigs
OK as the title states, I can not opne anything, programs will not run, I  can not go into folders and only menu I can bring up is when I right click and evne then I can on select any of the options. When I try to open or run anything the mac freezes up sometimes the raindow cursor apperars othertimes the screen just freezes. Also, keyboard bottons work (brightness, volume..dashboard, but agian when it comes up I can't select any gagestes or sticky notes)
I've treid re-boting and nothing, as I'm unable open anything I can't check for updates, uninstall aplliacations, ect..
Also, my windows parition loads up my default when I boot up (not sure why) and I guess its becuase of this I haven't been able to try solutions involving holding specific keys when re-booting.
To sum up, I mac book pro loads proparly, regiesters a USB drive when I plugged it in, as soon as I try to open anything I slows/frezes..rainbow cersur pops up and will not open anything with no messages or anything. Also sometiems everything except my desktop background vanishes off the screen when I double click a folder, application, menu.
I've loaded up windows and that seems to be working as usual. Because I'm in school at the moment I hope I don't wnat have to re-insall OS X, therefore I haven't popoed the OS X disk in as I'm a fraid I might loose my school work.
Lasltly, If I have to re-install the OS how do I get the apps I paid for back without paying of them again?
I tried to describe my situation as best I could,  hopefully it helps.

you can easily get the apps you paid for back without paying again as long as it is with the same account,  there i  a tab in the mac app store that says purchased and you can just go on that tab and press install for the bunch that are there,   to get your OSX partition as your main one go to system prefrenses, under system there will be something called startup disk and then you can switch it to mac OSX   i hope that helped, and for your applications not working i would reinstall OSX because it would install as an upgrade if you want it to and im sure it will keep most of your info and apps

2 hours ago the sales man called me and said, "noora we couldn't format the device there was an error, your hard disk is gone and you will need to repair it."
I have no idea where to take my laptop, I was told that it will cost me approximately $300 to get an new one.
