Mac corrupts file names on Windows network

I am using my MacBook with Tiger on a Windows peer-to-peer network. Works fine, except occasionally files names that I access on one of the Windows machines will become confused. It's occurrence seems random to me; I think it only happens when I save changes, though. So, for instance, the file OnlineAccountInformation.xls would become OnlineAcco%32hg.xls. Any idea what might be causing this? I had the same problem with Panther.

well ther eis a 32 char limit for a file name .and an 80-something limit for the total path i think. Usually though i get an error message that just says so much or simply that an erro occured and the file couldnt be saved. Also if you have a super long name that youve saved on the windows machine youll usually get the DOS name of the file when browsing from a mac.

  • Sending Files over a Windows Network

I am trying to send files from one computer to the other over a windows network. I have absolute path names of the two locations.
Can you just use "File.renameTo(File);" to pull this off?
Is there a fast way to move files over a windows network?
Thanks so much for your help

    With File.renameTo()? Yes.
between directories on different local drives? Yes.
or different nodes in a network?I'm not sure what you mean by that, which is most probably my lack of knowledge about computer networking.
    Here's the test I performed:
    File a = new File("C:/Temp/test.txt");
// 'E:' is (physicaly) a different hard drive than 'C:'
    File b = new File("E:/Temp/test.txt");
    System.out.println(a.renameTo(b));
// 'Athene' is a home-SAN-drive/server connected to my router
    File c = new File("//Athene/SHARE/Temp/test.txt");
System.out.println(b.renameTo(c));Both print true and in both cases I have checked to see if the files really were moved, which was the case.

  • Can a Mac be harmful to a Windows network (viruses?)

Hi, my IT states (we are 5 Macs in a Windows network) that a Mac connected to the windows network and to internet can be harmful (it can infect the windows network with viruses and trojan horses)
    Is it true?

There are exactly 3 threats posed by Macs running on a mostly Windows network:
1: a Mac without a virus scanner may receive infected attachments, not notice, and copy them to file shares. So get a virus scanner.
2: Windows running on a Mac through Parallels or VMWare is just as vulnerable to infection as any other PC. So get a virus scanner.
3: Windows-using coworkers may see how nice your Macs are and want to switch. This threatens the job security of IT staffers who only know Windows.

  • Unzipping Mac .zip files on a Windows PC

Does anybody know of a Windows program that will decompress Mac .zip (gz) files reliably? I've Tried StuffIt Standard for Windows but it quits every time with a warning, "Engine Error:Internal Error." Sure, I can make .sit files on the Mac and use Stuffit to expand them in Windows, but that's not the solution I'm looking for. If I already have a Mac .zip file on my Windows PC is there any way to open it without using a Mac?
I've searched these forums but all my searches come up with answers to the opposite question: How do I open Windows .zip files on my Mac?

A .gz file is not a "Mac Zip file" but a GNU Zip file, which is commonly used on Unix and Linux computers (OS X is a form of Unix).
You can get a gzip application for Windows here, or Google for something like "gzip for Windows".
Archives made by the Finder on a Mac are regular zip files (.zip files), just like the ones you would see on Windows.

  • File name conversions Windows Mac OS X

    Hello!
I have just switch from Windows XP to Mac OS X. In fact, I did it two days ago, and I feel I am still mostly lost. I wonder if you can help with a newbie/switcher question:
I have moved all my files to the Mac, but I have notice that, though the file names are correct, the name of those files that were inside a ZIP show strange characters, and it is so for the non-English characters like áéíóúàèìòùñ etc.
I have noticed the same inside my txt files. Also, some punctuation marks do not show properly.
What is the explanation for this? Can it be solved? How could I do it?
    Thank you all beforehand.

This is interesting, I believe I found what is an ASCII->Unicode file converter for OSX. It is a command-line tool, so you would need to know how to use terminal.
Go to this page and take a look:
    http://scripts.sil.org/cms/scripts/page.php?site_id=nrsi&id=TECkitDownloads
    The installer is:
TECkit version 2.2.1 for Mac OS X
    Jonathan Kew, 2006-09-19
    Download "TECkitinstaller2.2.1.tar.gz
I downloaded it and installed it, the command to launch it is:
    /usr/local/bin/txtconv
which returns an instruction page. This looks like a document converter, not a filename converter.
I don't have any non-english files here so I can't test it, but maybe someone who knows more about command tools can help you more, like the UNIX forum on these boards.
    PS:
I did tun the command on a test file like this:
    /usr/local/bin/txtconv -i ~/testIN.txt -o ~/testOUT.txt
and it did create a new output file but no translated characters. If you would send a few files to my email address I'll mess with it for you.

  • Corrupt File Names on Server

I have 4 networked G4s running variously 10.4.6 to 10.4.10. Also on the network is an Iomega NAS. When viewed from 2 of the G4s all the file names on the NAS are normal whereas from the other two some of the file names are corrupt. Setting up a new user account resolves the problem so it would appear to be something to do with the user account. I have tried Archive and Install and Re-building Permissions. Trashing the Users com.apple.finer.plist temporarily resolves the problem but it re-appeares on re-start. It doesn't appear to be OS Version related as I updated one of the offending Macs from 10.4.9 to 10.4.10 and this had no effect.

    Hi Graham,
I updated one of the offending Macs from 10.4.9 to 10.4.10 and this had no effect.
Was that an Archive & Install also? Might need to do a Fresh Install with a Zeroing of the HD.
At this point I think you should get Applejack...
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, then when the prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 5 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.

  • Corrupt File names & missing icons

I have three networked macs. 2 running 10.5.2 and one running 10.4.11. All of them access a LACIE network drive. The leopard macs show some folders with corrupt names. The tiger mac has no problem. The leopard macs have many files showing the gray missing icon. The 10.4.11 mac again shows all icons. This appeared to happen with the update from 10.5.1 to 10.5.2.

did you find a solution? am having same problem with leopard 'converting' all file names with symbols [*/ etc] to strange new names. the macs with 10.4 still see names as they should be. any tips?

  • Mac OSX file copy to Windows Share folder permissions

We'd got a few Mac's, one is snow leopard and the other is Lion.  The scenario is:
    Mac:
Go > Connect to server > smb://servernamehere > Connect > select your share
The authentication box then pops up, they've been typing in a username and password to connect to Server 2008 (Active Directory here by the way).  I don't think it matters if they type in "DOMAIN\username" and the password or just "username" and the password.
They try to copy files around but they get this wacky -xx number and their Macs lock up.
On the Windows Server Side I look at the folder permissions and the users they're using are all golden, full permissions.  I look at a test folder I create and it too looks good.
    The weird thing is this:
If I look at the folders on Windows it looks normal but if I open the command line on a Mac, do:
    cd /
    cd Volumes
    ls
    cd Folder_I'm_Connected_To
    ls -la | grep testfolder_I_made
    I get these results...
drwx------ 1 Their_Username_Here  staff  --> Some other stuff here like a folder size, date, time and the folder name
My question is this I guess.
Do I have to join these Macs to the Windows domain for the permissions and folder views on the Mac to look right AND to have them funtion properly?  The user of the other Mac says she never types in any authentication stuff, she just clicks a folder shortcut on her Mac ans she's in.
I would expect the permissions to at least say something like:
    drwxdrwx---
The Windows server doesn't have the group "staff" which makes it seem the Mac isn't looking at the mounted volume in the same way Windows is.  They also had this problem on AFP and SMB shares directly on a FreeNAS box which is also BSD like a Mac.
As a result of the Macs behaving similarly on both Windows and BSD (FreeNAS) I think this seems to be some wacky Mac behavior and I just can't figure it out.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

Hi, same results at the terminal command on a SMB share, observed here with mac computers running with OsX 10.8 with Windows 2008 R2 SMB shares. My issue is that theses computers need to copy files on theses shares with Chronosync or Carbon Copy and this is not working due to an "modify file attributes permissions" error. But if I copy the files using "Finder" it works great.
You don't need to join your computers to your domain to get it to work. The error that you are talking about is the -5000 error ???

  • Anyone know the syntax for printing-to-file for the file name in windows? Tried the following and it did not work...C:\Documents and Settings\Cal\My Documents\FolderForPrinting but I also put it in small quotes.

    Two issues I think.
One is how a file is specified to print to.
Second is how directories with spaces are allowed, and the detail for allowing spaces in directory or file names.
This is an XP operating system from Windows.
    Firefox is the browser.

  • How do I change file names in "Windows Friendly" attachments before sending?

In sending some "Windows Friendly" attached images, I want to change the file names so they are meaningful to the recipient. (I don't want to change the file name in my picture catalog, just for this mailing.)  In Outlook on an old pc, I remember being able to right click and rename the file in the email draft. I've tried right clicking on the image (which looks embedded in my draft), but there is no option for renaming. I can't see the file name in my draft to figure out another way to change it. I'm sure other people want to do this when sending other types of files, so there must be a way, right? I'm using the current version of Mail.
    Thanks!

I'm pleased to have helped, if you are mailing images all the time perhaps you could create a new folder on the Desktop or in Finder/Username store your images in the folder rename the images click Drag & Drop more than one at a time but don't make the package too big!

  • Finding corrupt file in an Windows 8.1 Update installation

    Hi
I would like to know if, with
Windows 8.1 Update, there is a
way to know if its installation has
    some of its corrupt file?
    Thanks
    Bye
    Balubeto

Usually after update been download, it will be checked for file integrity before it install and if there is any error it will notify you and after installation, it will also notify you if something went wrong.
However, you may run sfc /scannow command to check whether your Windows files are corrupted or not.
You should run the comm and in command prompt as administrator.
    In which Windows mode is
    better to run this command?
    Thanks

  • Need to search contents of text files on a windows network drive....

I am trying to search the content of a directory on a windows network drive for that contains .sas files (essentially text files) for a certain text string. Find does not seem to do this. Any ideas/suggestions?
When I copy a file to my desktop I can do it easily, but that is not an option.

Uh yeah....in my opinion GREATLY affects Apple's claim to windows compatibility......unless there is a solution out there. My firm is windows-based and we have a terabyte or so of data and files related to various stuff all buried in subfolders..and all I want is to search one folder for one text string.
I'm praying for a solution here.....

  • Corrupted file names in "iTunes Music Library.xml"

I have 7,500 songs in my library (iTunes 7.3.2). All the MP3s live on an external hard drive. Yesterday I tried to sync to my iPod and I noticed hundreds of 'file couldn't be found' errors. I checked in iTunes and loads of songs wouldn't play when I double-clicked on them -- they didn't have they error icon (which normally appears for missing files), they just wouldn't play.
After checking the .xml file, I noticed that hundreds of the file names been modified to point to weird files as follows:
    <key>Location</key><string>file://localhost/Applications/Utilities/Disk%20Utility.app/Contents/Resources/ru .lproj/DiskSizes.plist</string>
It looks like Disk Utility has somehow corrupted the filenames.
Does anyone have any idea how I can work around this problem? I really don't want to re-import my music as I'll lose thousands of ratings which have taken years to add!!!
The only option I can see is that I manually go through all of the file names and correct them by hand. This is going to take WEEKS!!!
I'd really appreciate some help here. Anyone else experienced this?

I'm having the exact same problem, but I know nothing of ruby scripts. I've exhausted my resources with tech support, and after literally hours of work with them it seems I now am faced with either re-rating each individual song, or pointing iTunes to each song that it can't locate. Is yours a solution that could help me? How can I find out more about Ruby Scripts? Thanks for your help, hellolylo (or anyone else who might also be able to help...)
