.mac is down - so what does that mean?

so .mac service is down for a couple hours - what happens to the emails i receive during this time? do they got lost? or will they arrive when service pops back up?

The emails should arrive with no problem, and you should be able to read their "Date Sent" column too.
If something really goes very wrong (unlikely), those who send messages to you then should get a message that your email address is unavailable, something like that.
Completely losing messages, with no traces, no warnings, should NOT be an option...

That is the orientation lock symbol, you can not go to landscape orientation. Tap the home button twice, swipe the task bar to the right, tap on the 'circle' icon at the left to unlock the orientation. You will then be able to view items in portrait and landscape mode.

Canot install update - mac has insufficient priviledges - what does that mean?

I get the box that says firefox has a security update that should be installed asap - go through all the steps - everything fine up to replacing this version for the older version then it says cannot install as I have insufficient privileges. More Information on your Mac would be great, thats kind of vague.
But Macbook Pro's do have a (all i can really speak of) exhaust on the back right where the screan attaches to the body of the mac, and some times when running certain processor intense programs like games, or Photo / Movie editing programs will make this turn on, and yes it can be loud and anoying, but its nothing really to worry about.

If it's a fourth generation or earlier model, you need to download iTunes 10.6.3; the newer versions won't run on 10.5.8.
If it's a fifth generation iPod touch, you need to buy a Mac OS X 10.6 DVD, which requires an Intel Mac, and then run Software Update. This also works with earlier iPods but isn't the best solution.

Music I purchased on I Tunes is not available when I open ITunes in I Movie. I Movie says those files are "protected" and not accessible. What does that mean and can I change them to "unprotected" so I can use them in IMovie?

Try going to About this Mac, under Apple menu, more info, in the left column hard ware click power. Under battery info see what it says under battery health>condition. If not normal, the battery probably needs service (replacement). You want take it to the Apple store to have it replaced, as this can other more serious issues if left un-tended to.

It sounds like you might have accidently copied Chess over from an Intel Mac, or an Intel Mac's installer DVD. The architecture typically means it is designed uniquely for either Intel or PowerPC. Be sure to extract Chess from the 10.5 Retail installer disc that looks like * and not any other disk. http://www.charlessoft.com/ 's Pacifist lets you extract individual applications from installers without having to reinstall everything.

DL of podcast stopped with error of -3259 what does that mean?

I'm trying to down load some podcasts and (besides it being incredibly slow at the moment)the downloads are crapping out a few min into the DL and returning an error msg of "err = -3259" what does that mean?
and how do I get my podcasts?

Eventually the problem resolved itself. I live in Asia (Thailand) and I think the Problem had something to do with all the cut cables and the lag/latency/dropped packet/disconnects that were going on around the time where all the cables were on the fritz and the internet out here was at a crawl.
