Mac Mail fails to quit; How to fix ?

With newly installed Snow Leopard on my 13 inch MacBook, Mail cannot quit unless 'Force Quit' is used.  How does one fix that, please ?
Thanks,  PippinD

If you used Software Update to make updates after the installation, try installing the 10.6.8 combo update from the Apple download site at http://support.apple.com/downloads/ . Sometimes, Software Update doesn't update everything correctly, which can usually be fixed by applying the combo update. Using Disk Utility (on your hard drive in applications/utilities) repair permissions, apply the update, then repair permissions again.
Please post back if that doesn't fix it.

mail does not quit on shutdown - have to force quit. can anyone help to rectify this issue?

I've been having this problem for some time also (long before Mountain Lion).
I can give it a-l-l n-i-g-h-t l-o-n-g to quit (yikes, poor thing, wasn't even allowed to sleep that night),
but even that's not enough time.
And no, I don't get an error message either.
I'm looking forward to an answer for both of us

  • Logout has timed out because the application Mail failed to quit.

Hello world... (Mac world that is)
The message says more "Logout has timed out because the application Mail failed to quit. To try again, quit Mail and choose Log Out from the Apple menu."
I tried everything. Still does not let me shut down.
Other programs will not shut down at this time, including Finder. I also know that the Time Machine icon has been spinning for over an hour. So I imagine we are in a loop of sorts.
Unfortunately, I have had similar troubles before that I did not record. So I figure I start now and see if somebody out there can help me.
    Peace!
    Chopo

I'm having the same problem (can't logout, shut down or restart), but the referenced solution doesn't seem to apply. I do not get a "Cannot connect to server" message, I just get a "Logout has timed out" message. It seemed to happen after an automatic software update that was supposed to involve a restart, but it hasn't been able to restart since.
Can you please clarify, what is meant by "delete the AutoLaunchedApplicationDictionary, which is located under the root node" (with reference to file loginwindow.plist)?
This is what the loginwindow.plist file looks like now:
    bplist00Ñ!AutoLaunchedApplicationDictionary¢ÒTPathTHide-/Library/Printers/hp/hpio/HPEventHandler.app/Ò _N/Library/Application Support/Hewlett-Packard/Software Update/HP Scheduler.app//27
I was at the genius bar earlier, and they said I need to 'archive and install' in order to 'reset the OS'... but there's got to be a better answer than that, no? Perhaps this plist thing? I'm surprised that even powering off the imac doesn't reset anything... it just comes back the way it was. I'm supposed to bring the 25 inch imac in to the mac store for surgery (archive and install), but seeing several similar cases on this discussion forum, without archive and install identified as the clear solution, I'm in search of a second opinion... or any suggestion for how to simply make this work the way it was before? Is it 10.5.4 that is causing this? Should I go back to 10.5.3?
Any suggestions are appreciated. Thank you.

  • When I send a message using hotmail.co.uk, it does not appear in my Mac Mail sent box. How do I rectify this?

I am using Mountain Lion (OS X 10.8.2) on my MacBook (mid-2009); Mail version 6.1 (1498).
My incoming mail server is pop3.live.com (Hotmail).
When I send an email on the Hotmail website, it does not register in my Mac Mail sent box.
    How do I rectify this?
Many thanks for your help in advance.

You have to send it from the Mail program on the Mac not the website. When you send it from the website it is in the sent folder on the website.
I handle all my mail in the Mac Mail program never the website.

  • Shut down cancelled because Mail failed to quit

Since the 10.8.1 update - and continuing with 10.8.2 - shut down often fails and I get the message that "Mail failed to quit". Permissions have been repaired.
    Any ideas?

    Hi Otto,
There are many threads on this topic. I have contacted Apple a few times as well and have tried just about everything mentioned on these forums, with little or no help.
The last thing that I tried has reduced Mail's Quit time to about 50 seconds (not enough to abort a shutdown) where previously it simply refused to quit unless Force Quit. The trick in question: Unsubscribe from Apple's RSS feed (which is automatically subscribed to).
In addition, prior to the above change at various troubleshooting steps over several weeks I had also deleted all Notes, ToDos, rebuilt Mailboxes etc. Essentially I have eliminated all additional functionality in Mail, just so that I can use it to send and receive email without a glitch.
Take a look at these threads for some pointers:

Suddenly, mail will not quit and will not show.  mail will not allow  restart . I used disk utility to repair permissions and verify disk, but still have the problem.
I also found a fix by Adamask?, but it did not work. Does anyone have a fix?

I clicked the apple icon, I used :Force Quit then selected mail.  It worked.

  • Shut down times out because Mail fails to quit

    Hi there
I have a few macs here, and have noticed that some of the frequently do not shut down, as Mail (or other apps at times) fails to quit. It does not happen all the time, and does not happen on all Macs, but I have a couple, one G4 running 10.3.9, and a G5 running 10.4.11.
It's trivial, I know, but it interrupts our backup system...
    Thanks
    Macfool

Press   command + option + esc keys on the keyboard together at the same time.
    Wait.
    Force Quit window will open.
    Select Mail, if not already.
Click the "Force Quit" button at the bottom of the window.
    Wait. Mail should quit.
If this does not help, press and hold the power button for more than 7 seconds.
Computer will shut down. You may lose the unsaved work.
    Best.

  • My Hotmail is marking certain messages as Junk; these messages do not appear in my Mac Mail Junk folder. How can I rectify this?

I am using Mountain Lion (OS X 10.8.2) on my MacBook (mid-2009); Mail version 6.1 (1498).
My Junk Mail permissions are as follows:
    - Enable junk mail filering
    - When junk mail arrives: Move it to the Junk mailbox
    - The following types of messages are exempt from junk mail filtering: Sender of messafe is in my Contacts and my Previous Recipients, Message is addressed using my full name
    - Trust junk mail headers in messages
My junk messages are never automatically deleted
My incoming mail server is pop3.live.com
I do not know where to find the junk mail settings on the hotmail website.
How do I make sure I'm not missing reading my junk when I use Mac Mail?
Many thanks for your help in advance.

Part of training the junk filter is also to mark good messages 'As Not Junk'.

  • My new ThinkPad (XP) can't see my Mac ether networked printer. How to fix?

I cannot find my HP LaserJet 5M on my ethernet network from our new ThinkPad using Windows XP. The printer is not connected directly to any computer. Our G5 iMacs print on this network without any trouble (in fact all of our macs for the past 10 years). So, do I need to buy PC Maclan to make this work or is there some way to get the ThinkPad to see my printer? All the drivers are loaded in XP. It's just not seeing the printer, and asks for a weird network address. Plugging in the printer's IP address doesn't solve the problem.

Many thanks. I googled my problem and found a solution: download and install bonjour for windows, and that solved the problem. thanks for your help.
