Mac mini Firmware Update

Mac mini EFI Firmware update 1.1 is released! Any problems with it?
Mac mini (Early 2006)   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   Intel Core Duo T2300 (1.66 GHz)

I wonder how wide spread this is?
based on the relatively few postings here, I'd say issues with the firmware update aren't widespread. That doesn't mean that some users aren't having issues as clearly some are, but typically if there's a widespread problem, these Discussions reverberate around it for days.
1. I've modified my mini buy installing more ram and
a faster / larger hard drive. I assume if I need to
send it back I am going to have to undo all that?
Ideas?
Not so much with the memory, as long as it's good, but certainly as far as the hard drive is concerned, Apple would likely advise you that your warranty was void if they see an indication you have replaced the original drive with one that is not supported for this product.
2. I do not have support for this mini, as this was
caused by one of their updates do you think I am
going to have a problem?
I think you will have a problem with warranty support if Apple were to detect anything that to them appears to have damaged or compromised the system. Opening the system is not in itself a problem, but if any action you take once having done so then causes problems, they can decline to provide warranty support. In this situation, they might, for example, claim that your replacement of the hard drive was responsible, or complicit, in the failure of the system after the update was applied. That isn't to say they WILL say that, but they COULD.

  • Monitor no longer sleeping after 10.8.2 & Mac Mini EFI update

Hopefully someone can help out here, my new 2012 Mac Mini was running fine without any problems, then when I installed the 10.8.2 update (not the original update that got pulled from the Apple site but the newer version) with the EFI Mac Mini firmware update my monitor won't go to sleep anymore. It used to do this without any problems, but since the update it goes to the screensaver without any problems but when the time comes for the monitor to go into sleep mode the screensaver just stays frozen on the screen until the Mini itself goes to sleep. Anyone else had this problem and managed to solve it? Thanks!

  • Mac Pro firmware update (AUG.'07) causes fan spinning@ loud volume-

Just ran the Mac Pro firmware updater from software update and now the fan is on extremeley loudly as soon as I boot-up and *does not quiet down at all* during operation. Also, there is no power light on the front of the Mac Pro tower. I read somewhere that this was supposed to improve fan performance but is has worsened it dramatically.
I read that this firmware update is the first of its kind to not require the removal of RAID disks… but I have a RAID disk so it gets me wondering that maybe it's related…?
    Mac Pro 2 X 3GHz Dual-Core running 10.9.10
Any ideas? I have tried resetting the PRAM, but nothing changed. Also, I cannot shutdown consisstenly, I have to power-down with a hard reset.
    Thanks,
    -Phil

    A. You should apply it from a non-RAID.
    B. You might want to reset the SMC.
*Note: This update requires a Macintosh-formatted disk or*
*partition. If you are starting up using a RAID (Redundant Array of*
*Independent Disks) subsystem, you must connect a Macintosh-formatted*
*storage device to apply this update.*
Some USB and FireWire devices may prevent firmware updates from
installing correctly. If you are having trouble installing an update
try disconnecting non-essential devices and use only an Apple keyboard,
    mouse, and display.
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macprosmcfirmwareupdate11.html
... and you read that it doesn't matter if the BOOT volume is a RAID?
There was/are some mis-statements out there. Booting from a RAID is not supported. Removing a RAID array was never an issue (non-boot volumes).
And me, I always avoid installing using Software Update and go to Apple Downloads.

  • Help: Install Snow Leopard Server 10.6.0 on Mid-2010 Mac Mini, then update?

I just purchased a Mid-2010 Mac Mini with Snow Leopard Client 10.6.3 (the new ones just released) with the idea of installing my copy of Snow Leopard Client on it and using it as both a network server and media server.
I own Snow Leopard Server 10.6.0 (the initial DVD release) and was thinking I could do a fresh install and update to 10.6.4 on the Mini without problem, but that didn't work. I also tried doing a Target Disk Install to the Mini using my MacbookPro, but the installer choked at the Machine Checksum saying MBPs weren't supported to run the installer.
So, that blows both of my previously known installation options. I was wondering if anyone else with the new Mini and Snow Leopard Server had any suggestions on how to get my current version of Snow Leopard Server (10.6.0) installed on the Mini and then run system updates to get it to boot properly.
    Thanks

    Hi GrainFocuser;
Your copy of SL Server version is probably too old to install on the new Mac Mini. It probably doesn't have all of the correct drivers for the newer hardware.
You might have better success with your alternatives if you post over on the server forum instead of here.

    Allan, thanks.
It is pretty clear that my installation disk is too old, hence looking for options and suggestions.
In years past with previous versions of Server, there was a way to install an outdated install disk (a point release or 3 behind) and then run the necessary installation updates...either through target disk mode or on to a separate boot disc.
So, with my 10.6.0 Server Install disc, I am not able to do so in either scenario because a) My other admin machine is a MB Pro and the installer performs a hardware checksome preventing install...so no Target Disk Mode, and B) Install on other disc from mini, again Hardware checksome since hardware not recognized.
I am looking at options to enable an install with my disk short of having to physically walk into Apple (a huge trek) and get a new install disk or ask Apple Support to mail one.
So, again... Any options from OS X Server Admins out there?

  • Cant use my Ipad with my Mac Mini after updating Ipad OS

So after upgrading my ipad2 to the latest OS, it now will no longer communicate with my older mac mini. I open itunes on the mac with the ipad attached and it says I have to update to the 11.1 version of itunes to access the ipad. But my Mini Mac only runs Mac Os 10.5.8 (try to do a software update but it says everything is up to date) which is below the system reqs for the new itunes. Did apple just screw me? I like to put songs and what not from my computer onto my ipad, and likewise get video from my ipad onto the computer. Does anyone know a workaround? I wouldnt like to revert the ipad back to the older version because I recall having some other issue where I was forced to upgrade it.

Choose About this Mac from the Apple menu and check the processor.
If it's a PowerPC Mac, you can't sync the device, but depending on your country, may be able to download iTunes Store purchases straight onto it and/or sign up for iTunes Match.
If it's an Intel Mac, click here, install the DVD, and run Software Update twice.

  • Mac Mini Yosemite update failed now stuck in loop

Hi I did the stupidest thing possible when upgrading an OS, didn't take a backup. Instead of trying to find space on a drive I just hit update and now I am kind of screwed. I have a new Mac Mini I bought in January of this year. The first time I downloaded yosemite from the app store and it failed due to "essentials" package. After several restarts and failures I booted to recovery mode and attempted to reinstall the OS from there. Three days later and that has failed countless times both on wifi and a hard ethernet connection.
Can anyone suggest a way to either get me back to mavericks or get yosemite to install correctly that won't involve me losing everything on the computer?

    1. Boot into Recovery Mode
    2. Plug in your external HD
    3. Open disk utility and select Macintosh HD
    4. Select "New Image"
    5. Save it to your external HD. (If you want, you can create a read-only image, instead of a compressed image by selecting read only for the image format. The read-only takes less time)
    6. Wait for it to create the disk image
    7. Once it's done, click the erase tab on your Mac HD disk.
    8. Select "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" for the format, and Macintosh HD for the Name.
    9. Click Erase (Note: this will erase all data on your disk)
    10. Re-install OS X.
Hope this helps, and if you need clarification on any steps, just ask

  • Mac Pro Firmware update -- can't boot, dead in water

    Hi all,
Just downloaded the newest firmware update. Shutdown, held in the power button, saw the flashes, heard the firmware beep, let power button go. Machine re-booted, and I saw the firmware progress bar on the screen. Running a little behind schedule, I left the room to grab some things for work. 45-60 seconds later, I come back and my new 23" ACD appears to be in sleep mode; Mac Pro power light is on. Can't seem to wake it up, so I hold down power button, then reboot.
The firmware update must've failed, because now my machine will not boot. It starts, I get the light gray screen but never see the Apple... the monitor simply goes black.
I've tried numerous times to re-do the firmware update to no avail... light flashes, hear the beep, see a gray screen, then monitor goes dark.
I've downloaded the firmware restoration CD, burned it, but the Mac never seems to recognize the firmware CD in the drive when trying to do an update.
This is not a RAID system. I did have a second SATA drive in the MP at the time fo the first update, but I've since removed it. Also hit the hardware switch on the mobo, and that hasn't helped either.
Any advice appreciated. I hate to say it, but I have a $4000 paperweight under my desk right now. :/
    PS --

If you do in fact have a
Firmware Restoration CD then use the instructions
    from here…
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/firmwarerestora
    tioncd11.html
… to get going with that CD.
    Did that with no luck.
Well, let me back up a moment -- the restoration CD was in the drive at the time I held in the power button, 3 flash/beep sequence, etc.
Where I deviated is attempting to insert the CD after the 3 flash/beep... I've had a difficult time getting the CD tray to eject during startup. I'll try again tonight to eject the tray after the 3 flash/beep, then insert CD.
I'm still looking for a photo online of where the SMC is located (no luck so far).

  • Mac mini Intel Updated to 10.4.10 - Won't boot if Airport turned on

Just updated my Mini to 10.4.10. I have two locations set up - one wired, and one wireless. If the location is set to use Airport, the machine will not boot. It may get to the desktop, but usually hangs before the dock makes it onto the screen. I need to do a Safe Boot, and change the location back to Wired for it to boot. After that, it works perfectly fine until I try wireless again, resulting in the same problem. Taking cues from some of the threads here, I downloaded and applied the Combo update, but it didn't help. It worked just fine under 10.4.9, and is completely reproduceable under 10.4.10. I tried turning off my Linksys wireless router to see if talking to it was giving Airport trouble, but even with the router powered off, the mini still hangs.
Saw some other threads about people having difficulties after 10.4.10 using HDMI to an HDTV, which I am also using, so maybe there's some combination of DVI->HDMI monitor and Airport???
Mac Mini (Intel Duo)   Mac OS X (10.4.10)   DVI->HDMI->Vizio GV47L HDTV

Curiously, of the 3 users I have with Intel minis who updated to 10.4.10, none have boot problems with Airport enabled. None are using any unusual adapters etc, but the systems are behaving correctly none-the-less.
However, there are obviously some users who do have problems, and just to be clear, since this is a user-to-user support forum, Apple do NOT read these threads. Well, to be more accurate, the forum hosts do, but solely from the standpoint of 'policing' content, and from time to time other staffers may, though not for the purpose of identifying technical issues. It is expected that users wishing to report a problem contact Apple directly to do so, and for all those suffering this anomaly (and others like it should they occur) it cannot be stressed too much that if the answer cannot be found here from another user, contacting Apple directly to make them aware of the problem is the best way forward.
In many instances, these issues turn out to be caused by issues that already pre-existed in the system before an update was installed, but in other instances where there is a genuine issue with an update and a specific piece of hardware or software or in certain operating circumstances, often the only way Apple will know is if users report it to them directly so they can then examine the details of each reported case to help identify the cause and then release a fix if it is necessary.
A useful resource for reporting and troubleshooting issues like these is http://www.macfixit.com/ though it's interesting to note that they don't seem to indicate this particular issue has been reported to them. They do, however, have a comprehensive guide on reinstalling MacOS at http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20070709083546267 for those who want to downgrade from 10.4.10

  • How do I find firmware upgrades for a 1.66 Mac mini, or any mac

We have a Mac Mini 1.66 processor. I have updated all of the software, but notice that there are no firmware updates. How do you find applicable firmware updates? I looked at my son's Macbook Pro and see that there is a Mac Mini firmware update listed and when you click on it, it says that it is not applicable to that machine. He used the migration utility to move from the Mac Mini to the Macbook Pro. My guess is that the Mac Mini is marked somewhere as having the firmware upgrade even though we did a complete install from scratch of the OS after he moved to his Macbook Pro. The re-install took the Macbook back to Tiger and then up to Leopard. I would like to get everything up to date before upgrading to Snow Leopard. As an aside, I would assume I can delete the file if it is allowed on the MacBook Pro that references the firmware for the Mac Mini since it says it is not applicable.

If no firmware updates appears via Software Update, then it's probable that there are none applicable to your model of Mac. The most recent firmware update, probably the one your son is seeing, applies only to the 2009 Mac mini. You can, if you wish, look up a list of all updates released for any model of Mac mini here:

  • Symantec AntiVirus LiveUpdate hangs my mac mini intel

Hello. I have an intel mac mini running mac osx 10.4.6 I
installed norton antivirus corporate edition (site-licensed
at my university) and all worked well.
That is, it did until I installed the firmware update on
the mini. Since then, when I try to run live update, the
system hangs, and all I can do is move the cursor around
the screen with the mouse. Can't click on anything, can't
break out with the keyboard, nothing. Need to reboot.
I can't find any information on this on the symantec site.
crDo you guys know anything about it?
Based on another thread I read here, I looked at crontab
(crontab -l), and it said "no crontab".
    Thanks very much

I don't know what is causing your issues, but in the meantime you can get the latest virus definitions from sites such as MacUpdate (just type "norton" in the search field).
FYI definitions for Norton Antivirus X 9 will also work with Norton AV X 10.
BTW there have been two firmware updates for Intel-based Mac minis (Firmware Update 1.0.1 and SMC Firmware Update). Which one did you install before the issue came up ?

  • Snow Leopard is slow on my mac mini

I think snow leopard is slower than leopard on my mac mini. What is the matter?
    (excuse me for my english)

I'm finding the same effect on my Mac Mini (just a few months old).
My Mac Book Pro is actually noticeable faster with Snow Leopard, but the Mac Mini is 10 times slower than it was with Leopard - barely usable at all.
My Mac Mini is 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 1GB Ram.
I've checked the activity monitor and othing seems to be hogging the CPU or using up the RAM. I did try to boot into 64 bit kernel, but it didn't seem to work (once I unlocked the firmware).
    ... Fixed! ...
Now my Mac Mini works blindingly fast again. Not sure how I fixed it, but could be a combination of removing all GPG traces, stopping EyeTV helper from starting up and trying many times to boot into 64 bit kernel (but never succeeded).
(Also removed GeekTool and Secrets preference panes).
Also, since the firmware was unlocked I got a Mac Mini Firmware update (to 1.2), so maybe that helped.
