Mac Mini Graphics Not Working Properly

I have two Mac Minis (a July 2009 model and a June 2010 model) that have recently began having video problems. 
The problem started on my newer machine which has two Samsung monitors attached, sometime after the last Snow Leopard update. 
Last week, the second, older machine which is connected to only a Panasonic LCD HDTV, began having the same issue. 
The problem is that the actual screen resolution being run does not match the settings in the System Preferences.   It looks like the graphics controller is actually running at 640x480 or 800x600 or something where everything is big but the OS (Snow Leopard or Lion) still thinks it is running at 720p or some other high resolution.  So the OS reports that everything is fine even though it is very obvious, things are not OK.
When I move the mouse to the side the desktop scrolls around on the screen.  it is like having a window into my desktop.
Changing the screen resolution in Hardware-Displays does not work nor does the detect display button.  On the TV for instance, the Displays panel reports 720p even though it is clear that what is on the screen is nowhere near 720p.  It makes videos on the TV look really bad and it makes it hard to navigate around the desktop.  I can't even fit the entire browser into the sceen. 
I had hoped that upgrading to Lion on the machine hooked to the TV would fix the problem, but It did not.  Lion displays the same problem.  I have not tried putting Lion on the newer Mac Mini yet. 
I did find a workaround for the newer one with the Samsung displays – by using fast user switching, sometimes the proper graphics resolution will come up right on the second or third try/user.  And if I do get it working properly and the monitor goes to sleep, it will screw the resolution up again when it wakes up, even if it was working properly before.  I have temporarily turned off sleep but this is not a good option for me. 
Does anyone have any idea what might be wrong or how I could fix it?

Just what happens when you try using the optical drive?

  • Mac Mini Alu not work in remote desktop with no monitor connected

    I've bought a new mac mini this week (but i have had the same problems with mac mini intel 2010), i use only in remote (no keyboard and no mouse). the problem is: If i have the hdmi connected to my plasma 50 samsung all work OK (also with plasma tv off). If i disconnect the hdmi cable the mac mini don't work correctly, safari and twitter app crash. Any ideas? Anyone have the same problem?

  • My "Mac Help" on my Mac Mini does not work!

    I have a Mac Mini, OS X 10.3.9. When I go into Mac Help, nothing happens when I try to ask questions, and I experience other problems when I try to go through Mac Help's library. And sometimes it works as if nothing was wrong. It's just plain sick. Is there any way to reinstall it? Not being able to use the Help at times is problematic to say the least.

    Welcome to the Discussions!
    When it happens, just try deleting its Caches folder, this should clean it:
    (quit Help) and delete this folder:
    Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.helpui
    If Help still doesn't work, try then deleting those three files:
    Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.help.plist
    Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.helpui.plist
    Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.helpviewer.plist
    and the Caches again.

  • AMD CCC / switchable graphics not working properly

    ok first of all i read bunch of posts on this forums, and on most of them i saw only responds with links and to download and update drivers - and those things seems not to work for most of people. So i decided to write here a post where someone will actually fix this problem because it is common on most of HP laptops.
    First of all, i bought my laptop in Qatar while i was on bussiness there.
    Model: Pavilion dv6-6b20se
    Product Number: A6N20EA#ABV
    Graphics: Intel HD 3000 and AMD HD 6490
    I bought this computer because im working as an architect and designer and sometimes i need it for rendering, and yea i would like to mention that part time i love to play games. So at that time (2 years ago) and for that money it was pretty decent laptop.
    So i've never touched anything myself on laptop, i always let my HP Support Assisstant do the work it is on computer. To be honest i didnt even know that this option of Switchable graphics exist. Until yesterday when i put game to play and i got problem wherever i press ESC it closes came and it crashes.
    I googled around and I saw that the problem apears when your graphic card is low.
    Requirements for the game:

    So by looks of specs here and specs of my computer and the game is like 4 years old, it should fly on my computer.
    I googled a bit more and i saw that every program reads only Intel HD graphic card and not AMD. Ok so i went and checked tutorilas on youtube how to switch it and there is where my suprise was. When i open CCC as per everyone on internet i dont have Switchable Graphic option - only Power Play. So i read on your website that some computers need to be set in BIOS from Dynamic which was my original setting to FIXED. I did that to but my option when i right click on desktop for switchable graphics disaper and my CCC is not working.
    Ok so i went to your website again, was looking for original drivers for my computer. And there are 3 drivers.
    1.AMD High-Definition Graphics Driver
    2.AMD/Intel Switchable High-Definition (HD) Graphics Driver
    3.Intel High-Definition (HD) Graphics Driver
    Ok so when i download them, i can install only No.1, other two i get message that i dont have minimum requirements.
    so i checked those to, and it says that  you need to have windows 7 which i have since i got this laptop with original licensed product.
    The thing is when i install new version of AMD driver and CCC i get switchable graphics option when i right-click on desktop, but when i get in in CCC i get defoult page and there is no option to switch. When i update intel graphics i loose switching. Either way, it wont work, and im stuck with crappy card that i cant use on bunch of programs and games that i need it for.
    So please for once give us a bit detailed answer on how we can fix this. Because it is not only me that have this problem, alot of people are having them and they still cant fix this.
    Sorry for my lenghty post, but i thought i needed to explain in more debth.

    And yea i forgot one thing. When ever i instal newer version of AMD driver in Device manager it changes from AMD HD 6490M to AMD HD 7400M Series. Dont know why it constatnly does that.

    If your Firewire or USB isn't recognizing any device.  A solution which has worked for some whose hard drive became invisible in 10.4 was simply to follow these four steps to reset the Firewire/USB bus:
    1. Shut the machine down.
    2. UNPLUG the power lead to the computer and any firewire/USB drive or devices.
    3. leave it for 10 minutes.
    4. Connect back up and reboot.

  • Does the Mac Operating System not work properly with Youtube?

    I noticed that my Messages on youtube are instantly deleted when I comment on some peoples Youtube channels. I don't think its the person that owns the youtube channels doing it because it is deleted almost instantly after I log out. It's very odd and I don't think its youtube censoring my comment because I'm not cursing in the comment and I don't believe cursing is against the TOS on Youtube anyways.
    Another thing I notice is that when I'm on a flash based chatroom that when someone I am talking to has left the chatroom it will still say they are in the chatroom until I click on my friendlist and than they turn red as if they are gone. It is very odd that I am noticing these strange bugs. However the chatroom thing could be a chatroom problem because it might do that on my Windows side which I never checked because I'm usually on that chatroom on my Mac side.

    The Adobe flash version could be checked to see if the system is actually using
    their latest version (see Adobe, not a third party prompt from elsewhere to get it)
    as that may be dated or you may have a newer -and- older Flash, and if so,
    the later one may not be in use. Within OS X you can choose the newer one.

    Also, some of youtube can be run in HTML5 and depending on the author, should
    be visible even without a Flash player installed. youtube is a google product and
    they also have a help section for dealing with their content. And browser settings
    may affect how things work. Depending on what browser you use, this varies.

  • Mac Network does not work properly, can't safe, access only in safemode

    I just got a nice IMac 27" and really like it.
    Now I set up a network to move files back and forth with my Macbook Pro.
    Now I encounter the following problems:
    - I can not safe files on the IMac from my Macbook
    - Access to files on IMac are only in "safe mode", meaning I have to safe first with another name on my Macbook and can not modify them straight up.
    I have set the access rights to read and write with a special setup username and password. So that can not be the issue.
    Have tried to google this problem but no luck unfortunately.

    Very often a small mistake in configuration can be responsible for WLAN functionality.
    For me your posting is not so clear and because of that I will ask you some questions:
    1. Is your notebook preinstalled with delivered recovery image or you have installed your own OS and which one?
    2. Is WLAN card listed and properly recognized in device manager?
    3. Is the WLAN enabled with WLAN switch placed at the right side of the notebook?
    4. Can you use FN+F8 key combination to enable/disable WLAN card?
    5. Are you sure the WLAN card is enabled properly?
    6. Do you use Windows WLAN settings for WLAN configuration?
    7. Have you tried to scan the surrounding area using Windows or ConfigFree utility?

    Are you sure about your hard disk health, any clicking noice recently?
    Go to boot menu (press option button or button left to your space bar while booting) > Select Recovery drive > Disk utility > Verify the volume on which OS X is installed.

    I received no error message. The application was just trying to find applications unsuccessfully.
    I am using MAC OS 10.10.1
    I tried to uninstall the application  but it seems that a kind of deamon is still installed thus providing me to reinstall properly. Do you know where are the elements to remove in order to get my machine just like before ?
    Otherwise I would have to reinstall everything and this would be a pain.

    Back up all your files, on boot up when you first press the power button, press CMd and r and keep pressing until you get something apart from a apple logo. Then click reinstall Mac OS X or something like that. You may be prompted to insert your disk.

    If after you charge it for about three hours and it only last about five minutes the battery is probably dead or there could be another hardware problem.  I would go back to the Apple store and ask them specifically how can it be OK if the fully charged battery only lasts five minutes.
