Mac office or Pages for daughter's school work?

My daughter needs more for her school assignments and creative projects. She is interested in animation and likes to enhance photos and images she finds. as a secondary school student(12yrs-13yrs) she needs to produce homelearning projects also. We have imac 10.5 with OX. I had been recommended macoffice because it was assumed we would find it difficult to work on apple at home and pc at school , this doesn't appear to be the case, daughter does both no problem but as I am not great with computer there are things she might struggle to do. i am planning to get some instruction from the apple store recently opened in our nearest city. What would people recommend?

Kids typically adjust very quickly to the idea that "this is a word processor and they all work pretty much the same", it is adults who tend to think that Macs and Windows computer must be very different. (They are but not in the operation of software generally.) Having worked for an Apple reseller my advice has pretty much been this simple: If you are going to create documents and print them (or save as PDF files) it really doesn't matter what you use. If you are going to be sharing files - especially if you are going to give your files to others - get Office.
As others have noted, while iWork can read Office files (and write them) iWork's native file format isn't compatible with Office. Further, when an iWork document is exported to Office the results are often not identical.

  • Mac Office upgrade asks for my password.  Is it safe to download this?  It seems to be coming from the update function on my machine.  Thanks

Is it safe to download an upgrade from Microsoft Office?  It asks for my password.  With all the hoopla lately over Flashback I am being very cautious.  Thanks.

Good idea. How did the upgrade appear, from running Software Update, from a Microsoft website that you navigated to yourself, or through Microsoft Office's "check for update" function?
If you are not absolutely certain click Cancel.
If it appeared unexpectedly, in conjunction with browsing a website, it is fraudulent.
    What does it say exactly?

  • Mac OS 9 -  iTunes for iPod mini doesnt work, what do??

last week i bought an iPod mini, but iTunes 4.7 which is on the iPod cd doesnt work (the iPod mini software also not),i think because my mac is too old.
so were can i get iTunes plus the iPod mini software which runs on my macintosh?

There is no version of iTunes for Mac OS 9 that will work with the iPod mini. The last version of iTunes for Mac OS 9 is version 2.04, and that will only work with first and second generation full-size iPods, plus third-generation full-size iPods which are running version 2.0x of the firmware. All third-generation iPods and iPod shuffles can be used as an external hard disk in the Finder. Mac OS 9's iPod updater will only work with first and second generation full-size iPods.

  • Pages for iPad dictionary not working at all

Hi, I just downloaded Pages for iPad. When I highlight a word, then right arrow, then define, it doesn't do anything. I'm French and if I do the same thing in an English document or an English ebook, it defines the word immediately.
    Someone knows the solution ?

Are you expecting to see a French dictionary?  If so, that's not available, only English and Japanese, as stated in the info published by Apple:

  • Can mac auto select pages for print by size

Hello, does anyone knows if there is a way how to set up on Mac auto selecting for printing pages by size? I need it to print loan documents for my notary public business. Using HP laser dual tray printer.

    Hello Shane,
I am notary public and I would recieve file with documents that need to be printed on both legal and letter size paper. I used Adobe Acrobat from my husband's Windows computer which sorts the documents by paper size and then print's them out on correct size paper.
The printer I have is HP Laserjet 400 M401n.
    Thank you for your help

  • Pages vs. Mac:office

I'm very seriously considering making the switch from Mac:Office to Pages. Pages looks amazing. While i'm not sure if I'll use certain parts of it, more is better than less, I say.
I have to admit though, Pages appears kind of intimidating. I'm all for learning new, cool things. But will the transition/learning curve be tough?
    I'd appreciate some opinions.
By the way, what's the difference between Pages and Pages 2?
    Thanks!
    Lindsay

    Hullo Lindzzz:
Here we go again! iWork is not a replacement for MS office, for which most outside the corporate world might well be duly grateful. Do you really want the full-on stock-tracking, three sets of books, all-conning spreadsheet with a simple document app; or a fully fledged database for letters to friends; and the whole blah-blah etc. they pay you a retainer to put up with when you work for somebody else? Do you have a tame systems administrator to resuscitate the system after breakfast, before lunch, and just before knock-off time? Well then stick with Micro-Kafka. You've been fairly warned and don't complain.
But coming to Pages, forget about all that. It's intuitive, so long as you play around with it and see. Read the menus and the help. And remember "undo." Your nice new Mac isn't going to disappear in a puff of blue smoke just because you changed a paragraph style. But a decade or so's penance on Word isn't going to help you one least little bit. Leave it for the corporate 9-5.
So we come to the speed issue. I have to say that the capacity to keep up with speed typing was one of the things I tested Pges for, on the Mac I was going to buy, before I would have considered it. For text entry on a straightforward machine with a basic computer, there is frankly nothing to beat it.
Pages does however rely almost completely on Mac OS X (Tiger!) features for its presentation of typography. You might also remember that if you make use of the more complex templates there is quite a lot going on in them, and a slowdown in text entry is the price you pay; as you would in any program that did this sort of thing. Hopefully iWork 07 might address this issue with a separate draft mode for getting words down. But you can still do this with a simple format from the blank template, and copy and paste into others.
Remnant speed issues may be related to such things as external displays not accessing OS X features as they might, and other variables that remain a mystery. Test it on the machine you are going to use; don't expect full speed with everything turned on all the time, or in complicated layouts, and you shouldn't be disappointed. Learn to modify the provided templates and save the results as your own, and you'll soon be producing documents with your own style as you'd like it to be, instead of what Bill Gates thought you should.
Then for its hassles and its glitches (and yes there are some) remember that you're using the second iteration of a program that's here to stay and going places. The minimal effort you spend learning it won't finish up wasted.
Of course, if you want to wow people with Keynote, or commercially publish your fabulous documents, etc. - you're going to have to set up your own display with a Mac, or sell your printer, publisher, or boss one. Never mind, style is priceless. Or about 1600 Aussie dollars if you're that much into it that you need Quark Express. But if you spent that much on fonts and used Pages you could do even better, quite frankly.
So anyway that's my ha'p'th. I've waited for years for a program like this. It lets your thoughts take shape as you would like them to appear; and there's simply nothing else that's ever done that without getting in the way of them.
    Cheers.

  • For college/grad school should i get ipad 3 or mac book air?

for college/grad school should i get ipad 3 or mac book air?

Nobody can tell you which one is best for you, it's a personal preference. However, here are a few factors you might want to take into consideration:
1-They're two different devices that serve different purposes. The way you take notes in an iPad is different than the way you would on a MBA. On the iPad, with apps like Evernote and Notability you can take more complete notes than with a MBA. You have the option to have audio notes, write with a Stylus, make diagrams by hand to explain/relate concepts easily. With the external keyboard (for that I'd recommend using the Apple Wireless Keyboard with the InCase Origami Workstation) you could type just as fast as you would on a MBA and format the text just like you would on the MBA. However, for bigger (possibly partner) papers, the MBA would help you. You could start the paper on the iPad without any issues (using Pages or even Evernote) but you'd need a laptop/computer to finalize the project.
2-Portability wise, they're both incredibly light. The iPad is somewhat smaller = lighter but with the keyboard they're about the same. The fact that with the ipad + keyboard combo you can take out the keyboard only when you need it, for me, is an advantage be ause when I don't want to use it, it's not in the way. For others, it's a disadvantage because you have to carry two items instead of one.
3-MBA let's you access all websites and most file types. If one of your classes requires you to go to the Browser and see a Flash enabled page, the iPad would not be of much help. Same goes for any programs you might need to install. On the MBA you'll most likely be able to do so. On the iPad, chances are there won't be an app for that.
4-Aonce you already have a MBP, I'd go for the iPad. If/when the iPad falls short(because of the limitations mentioned above) you can use the laptop. And in the mean time, use the iPad for everything else. That way you get the best of both worlds. You'd only need to take the MBP when you know you'll need it and wont have to carry that weight all the time.
6-Studying (reading, highlighting, annotating) is easier and more intuitive on the iPad. The iPad is great for reading, combine that with the fact that you can leave comments/notes just like you would on a physical piece of paper, and you've got the best way to learn IMO.

ARD won't be as smooth as you think  over the Internet and be a security risk for your daughter.
Your best bet would be to install nannyware, then when she's asleep you can review the logs.

3-The iPad needs a computer to be updated, synced, etc. So if you don't have one, definitely get the MBA. The MBA can work as a standalone computer. The iPad needs to be synced to an iTunes library in a computer.
4-MBA let's you access all websites and most file types. If one of your classes requires you to go to the Browser and see a Flash enabled page, the iPad would not be of much help. • I bought pages for my macbook air, but it is not showing up on my desktop mac

I recently purchased Pages as it is on my ipad / iphone / ipod touch, so I thought why not have it on my Macbook air and desktop mac.  I bought it on the Macbook air, but it is not showing up on my purchases, and if I go to download it on the desktop, it states it is 19.99.  What am I doing wrong?

Apps installed on your iOS devices cannot run on Mac OS X. Two different operating systems.
If you want Pages on your Mac, you can purchase and download the Pages app for OS X here.
Be aware, the minimum requirement for Pages for OS X is v10.9 or later.

  • Problems with the new Pages for Mac

I'm starting to see countless problems running the new Pages for Mac (5.0.1) and I can't find a way to resolve them.
    1. when I'm typing and want to delete word(s), I'll use the alt+delete function for ease, however this starts deleting words after the cursor, merging words together and changing my sentece. It comes from when I'm deleting as the new pages is giving me the dropdown menu for the autocorrect word.
    2. grammar check is off. Namely, it picks a random point in a word and moves on from there. EX: "because of the" will have "use of the" underlined in green and give me recommendations to change to "because of the" or "cause of the". Using those recommendations, I'll end up with something like: "becabecause of the"
    3. the find and replace function jumps around in the paper, and sometimes doesn't even display the word currently selected (leaving the user to scroll around looking for what is selected)
    4. Autocorrect has vanished for some reason: no autocapitalization, no turning fractions such as 1/2 into a tidy and neat fraction with small numbers for numerators/denominators, etc.
I'm still using it, and these are what I have found, so there may be more later as I continue to use it. If anyone has found ways around these bugs, please let me know.
    Thanks!

Pages 5 now uses the system autocorrect, which does not have as many features as the one inside Pages 4.  Some things you can add manually there.   Others you have to ask Apple to add via
    http://www.apple.com/feedback
Or continue to use Pages 4 instead.

  • .pages file created in Pages for Mac won't open in Pages for iPad

Just created a pages document on my Mac, saved it to my google drive and when attempting to "open in" from my google drive the file won't open in pages for iPhone or iPad (mini).
All versions of Pages are on latest release.
    Messge reads:
    Document can't be imported.
    The file format is invalid.
I download both the mac app and ios app a week ago.
    Thank you for any info!

I've been testing file structures via google drive this morning and have yet to find a solution.
Compressed files will not open in Pages on the ipad and an upload to Google Drive of a .pages document re downloaded to my desktop will no longer open in Pages on the Mac.
Somewhere in the google ecosystem during upload or download / "open in" (on the ipad) the file is being restructured so that it cannot be recognized.
An hour call with the team at Google hasn't supplied an answer yet and they have opened a case file to investigate.
I'll update when I hear back.
    Thanks!
