                   any help about configuring MAC OS to work with ISE and 802.1x machine authentication?

Hi,
You will need to have the MAC OSX join the active directory domain so it can have the proper machine credentials. If joining the macbook to Active Directory is not a viable solution then having a certificate issued to the macbook would be another option but you would have to user a user certificate.
If we take a step back, why are you looking to perform machine authentication for a macbook?

  • Mac & 802.1x Machine Authentication to Microsoft AD using PEAP

    We are having trouble successfully connecting wirelessly our Active Directory-bound Macs to our internal 802.1x wireless network using EAP-PEAP with machine authentication. All of our Windows machines work fine. We have a network profile built out of JAMF, with some generic payloads configured, including Use Directory Authentication and the appropriate Verisign certificate attached to authenticate to the Cisco Radius Server onsite. We are able to connect to this wireless network when we also have the machine directly connected via Ethernet. Somehow this causes the Mac to pass the correct domainhost\machinename. When we aren't connected directly, the Mac attempts to authenticate with the incorrect domainhost in front of the correct \machinename. The logs from Console are attached below:

    The first, unsuccessful attempt above is when we are attempting to authenticate and connect wirelessly without a connection to ethernet. The 2nd, successful attempt is when are also connected to Ethernet, which passes the correct domain name, properly authenticating the domain\machinename. After reboot, we have to again plug in directly to Ethernet to reauthenticate to this wirelss network. Any idea(s) why plugging into Ethernet would cause the Mac to send the correct domainhost?     Hi Danny. Older thread here, but I can confirm 10.8.4 did indeed resolve a very specific bug in circumstances where the netbios name did not match the domain name. We worked with Apple's engineers on resolution for this fix and can confirm that until we got our Macs to 10.8.4, we experienced similar issues with machine-based configuration profiles failing to authenticate as a result of incorrectly passing the wrong domain.

    Hello,
    I am analyzing your question and seeing the ISE logs i can see that the machine credentials was LENOVO-PC. Do you have shure that these credentials has in your Active Directory to validate this machine ? The machine certificate has the correct machine credentials from the domain ? The group mapped in the ISE rule has the machine inside this group ?
    Differently from the user authentication that happens with success because the domain credentials can be validate from the Active Directory and get access to the network.

    I'm doing user and machine authentication with ISE.
    I use a first authorization rule to authenticate the machine against the AD. If it's part computers of the domain.
    Then I use an authorization rule to check if the user's group in AD with the credential he used to open the session + "Network Access:WasMachineAuthenticated = True"
    Things seems to be working and I see my switch port is "Authz Success" but shortly after the Windows 7 machine is behaving like 802.1X authentication fails. The little computer on the bottom right has a cross on it.
    If I disable and enable again the network card of that windows machine it works.
    Does any one of you have an idea about this problem ? something to tweak on Windows 7 like timers...

    Hi Mika. My comments below:
    a) You told me that MAR ("Network Access:WasMachineAuthenticated = True") has some drawbacks. When hibernation is used it can cause problems since the MAC address could have been removed from the cache when the user un-hibernate its computer. Then why not increasing the MAR cache to a value of 7 days then ? Regarding the roaming between wire and wireless it's a problem indeed.
    NS: I don't believe that the MAR cache would be affected by a machine hibernating or going to sleep. There are some dot1x related bug fixes that Massimo outlined in his first pos that you should look into. But yes, you can increase the MAR timer to a value that fits your environent
    b) You suggest to use one authorization rule for the device which should be part of the AD and one authorization rule for the user with the extra result "IdentityAccessRestricted = False". By the was, are we really talking about authorization rules here ? I will try this but it's difficult for me to imagine how it would really work.
    NS: Perhaps there is some confusion here but let me try to explain this again. The "IdentityAccessRestricted" is a check that can be done against a machine or a user account in AD. It is an optional attribute and you don't have to have it. I use it so I can prevent terminated users from gaining access to the network by simply disabling their AD account. Again, that account can be either for a "user" or for a "machine"
    z) One question I was asking myself for a long time. All of us want to do machine+user authentication but Windows write Machine OR User Authentication. This "OR" is very confusing.
    NS: At the moment, the only way you can accomplish a true machine+user authentication is to use the Cisco AnyConnect supplicant. The process is also known as "EAP-Chaining" and/or "EAP-TEAP." In fact there is an official RFC (RFC 7170 - See link below). Now the question is when and if Microsoft, Apple, Linux, etc will start supporting it:

  • Apple macosx machine authentication with ISE using EAP-TLS

    Hello,
    On a ongoing setup we are using eap-tls authentication with account validation against AD. We have our own CA (microsoft based). ISE version 1.2.1 patch 1.
    With windows machines all is working well. We are using computer authentication only.
    Now the problem is that we wish to do the same with MAC OSX machines.
    We are using casper software suite and are able to push certificates into macosx, and are doing machine authentication.
    in ISE the certificate authentication profile is being set to look at the subject alternative name - DNS name of the machines. Whenever we set it to the UPN (hostname$) windows accounts are not found in ad.
    When MAC OSX authenticate as machines (they have a computer account in AD) they present themselves with RADIUS-Username = hostname$ instead of host/hostname.
    The consequence is that by lacking the host/, ISE considers that this is a user authentication, instead of a computer one, and when it sets off to find the account, it searches in User class instead of Computer - which obviously returns no results.
    Is anybody aware of any way to force MAC OSX to present a host/hostname RADIUS-Username when authenticating?
    Any similar experiences of authenticating MAC OSX with ISE and machine/computer authentication are welcome.

    Additional information from the above question.
    I have the following setup;
    ACS 3.2(3) built 11 appliance
    -Cisco AP1200 wireless access point
    -Novell NDS to be used as an external database
    -Windows 2003 enterprise with standalone Certificate Authorithy Services Installed
    -Windows XP SP2 Client
    My Goal is to use Windows XP Native Wlan Utility to connect to AP using EAP-TLS authentication against Novell NDS.
    Tried to connect using Cisco compatible wlaN utility and authenticate using EAP-GTC against Novell NDS for for users, it works fine and perfectly.
    When connecting using EAP-TLS, I am getting an error from ACS failed attempt "Auth type Not supported by External DB". But in the ACS documentation says that it supports EAP-TLS. How true is this? Is there anybody have the same problem? Do I need to upgrade my ACS? What should I do? What other authentication type could be used to utilize native WinXP Wlan Utility?

  • ACS 5.4 and machine authentication

    Hi,
    I am installing ACS 5.4 for WiFI user and using EAP-TLS/ certificate based authentication.
    I have Authorization profile created as shown in attachement.
    Under authorization profile i have selcted "Was Machine Authenticated=True"Condition.
    Somehow clients are not able to connect. When I looked at logs on ACS it shows that the requests are not matching this rule bu default rule.
    As soon as I disable this condition, user gets connected
    I have already selected "Enable Machine Authentication" under AD & "Process host Lookup" in allowed protocol.
    Any Suggesions?

    Shivaji,
    The purpose of the "wasmachineauthenticated" attribute is for user authentication, this is your typical "chicken or the egg" scenario since machine authentication needs to be performed without this attribute for successful authentication.
    When successful machine authentication occurs there is a MAR cache within ACS uses to track the mac address of the device. In your case you are forcing ACS to look for a "WasMachineAuthenticated" during the initial machine authentication which will not succeed.
    In my experience it is best to set this in environments where users' can only authenticate through registered workstations (typically machines that are joined to AD), so when a user attempts to use their 802.1x credentials on a smart phone or non-registered asset, they get denied since the device does not have machine credentials to join the network.
    I hope this bring some clarification to Edward's recommendation.

    i enabled machine authentication for windows machine but i have some MAC OSX laptop that authenticate with MS AD that i need to exclude form MAR , i tried to apply specific auhz policy but every time it fails because of MAR  , any idea ?  

    One way you could do this is to utilize profiling. You can then create a policy that authorizes MACs without forcing them to go against the MAR check.
    On the other hand, if your MACs are joined to your domain then you can eliminate MAR and simply perform PEAP (machine) based authentication for both your MACs and Windows machines. 
    You could also create a special rule for MACs that authenticate via PEAP (User) based authentication

    Hi,
    Windows Machine authentication requires machine credentials, and these credentials can only exist on the AD.
    What you can do is authenticate the machine using its MAC address (Mac authentication bypass), and for this you only need to configure mab on the switch, make sure the client do not speak dot1x and create the user with username/password = mac address on the RADIUS server.

  • OS-X - 802.1x and machine authentication

    Hi all
    I have a customer with a large installed base of MacBooks Pro running MAC OS-X, connected via WLAN to a centralized Cisco WLC 5508. He also has installed a Cisco ACS 5.x as RADIUS server and Open LDAP as directory services.
    The customer wants to do machine authentication based on cthe lients MAC addresses, which means that the ACS 5.x has to check the clients MAC address against the LDAP.
    Obviously MACs are not able to send "host/" to differentiate between client- and user-authentication, which by the way works perfect.
    - Does anybody have made the same experiences ?
    - Has anyone managed to get this running ?
    - Can anyone provide me config examples, hint or tipps ?
    Everything is very much appreciated since this is an urgent request.

  • 802.1X Machine Authentication ONLY!

    Hi. I have a customer who wants to perform 802.1x machine authentication only to prevent users connecting there own devices to the corporate network. The machine credentials will be authenticated via Cisco ACS which will proxy the authentication to ActiveDirectory. If successful, the 802.1x assigns the port to a VLAN. At this point, the port is 'opened up' and the user can recieve an IP address and can then login to the domain as normal (AD username/password) via the network login screen. Is this a workable solution?
    I basically want the end user to not notice anything new, but 802.1x operates in the background to authenticate the machine before displaying the network login box. To the user, the PC boots and displays the login box and they login as normal :-) If they bring in their own device, it will fail 802.1x machine authentication and will not get any access.
    Has anyone implemented this? Is it a feasible design?

    good news for you.. you can do this using the "Machine Access Restriction" on both ACS 4.x and ACS 5.x:

    As soon as the machine performs the 802.1x using the client credentials, the ACS will keep this info on a cache and it will match any further auth attempt (e.g. using the user credentials) for this client using the "Calling-Station-ID", so basically the client's MAC address.
    Depending on whether a client performed or not Machine Authentication before, you can decide whether to assign a sort of restricted access/guest VLAN or to deny access.
    If the personal client doesn't have a 802.1x supplicant at all, then you can decide to enable the guest vlan feature on the switch itself.

  • ACS 5.3, EAP-TLS Machine Authentication with Active Directory

    I have ACS 5.3. I am testing EAP-TLS Machine Authentication using Active Directory as an external Identity Store. II was testing and everything was going fine until I did some failure testing.
    My problem: I deleted my computer account out of Active Directory and tried to authenticate my wireless laptop and it still worked when it should have failed.
    Here is some of the output of the ACS log. You can see that the computer could not be found in AD and this was returned to the ACS. However, ACS still went ahead and authenticated the computer successfully.

    I was assuming that if the computer was not found, the Identity Policy would fail, so I did not configure any authorization policy. Do I need an authorization policy to tell the ACS to fail the authentication if the machine cannot be found in AD? If I need an authorization policy, how do I configure it?
    Note: In my Identity Store Sequence, I did enable the option:
    For Attribute Retrieval only:
    If internal user/host not found or disabled then exit sequence and treat as "User Not Found"
    but this only seems to work for internal identity stores (at least based on my testing)

    Can try the following. Define an attribute to be retrieved from Active Directory and that exists for all objects. When defining the attribute it can be given a default value. Assign a default value which is a value that will never be returned for a real machine entry (eg "DEFAULTVALUE") and give it a "Policy Condition Name"
    Then can make a rule in the authorization policy such as
    If "Policy Condition Name" equals "DEFAULTVALUE" then "DenyAccess"

  • ISE 1.2 - 24492 Machine authentication against AD has failed

    Currently experiencing a machine authentication problem between ISE 1.2 patch 2 and a customer AD installation.
    AuthZ policy is set to match agains /Users/Domain Computers and /Users Domain Users.  User authentication works, machine auth doesnt.
    Machine authentication box is ticked.
    If you try to disable an AD machine, or try a machine not in the domain you get the appropriate different response in the ISE logs which sugests it has the right access into AD to check this info.
    This happens on all computers, both WinXP and Win7 corporate builds.
    I know its not an ISE policy configuration as I have resorted to testing the same ISE against a vanilla lab AD environment with the same AD domain name (just by changing the DNS servers ISE uses) and the computer lookup works!
    Anybody got any ideas?

  • ISE 1.3 Why are Windows endpoints defaulting to 802.1x machine authentication in wireless profile and not User or User&Computer

    We are running ISE 1.3 tied to AD with WLC 7.6.130.0.  Our ISE has a GoDaddy (none wildcard) certificate loaded for https and EAP.  We are just running PEAP.  We have a mix of IOS, Android, and Windows 7/8 devices.  IOS and Android devices can self create a wireless profile and after entering credentials can connect without issue.  Our Windows 7/8 devices, when auto creating a wireless profile are selecting 802.1x machine authentication instead of User authentication or the best option which is machine or user authentication.  This is problematic as we do allow for machine authentication but have an authorization rule limiting machine auth to domain controller and ISE connectivity only.  This is to allow domain Windows 7/8 devices to have domain connectivity prior to user sign-in but force user auth to get true network connectivity.  The problem is why are the Windows devices not auto setting to user authentication (as I think they did when we ran ISE1.2), or the best option which is to allow both types of authentication?  I have limited authentication protocols to just EAP CHAP and moved the machine auth profile to the bottom of the list.  Neither have helped.  I also notice that the Windows 7/8 endpoints have to say allow connectivity several times even though we are using a global and should be trusted certificate authority (probably a separate issue).

    When connecting a windows device to the ISE enabled SSID when there is not a saved wireless profile on that machine, it will connect and auto create the profile.  In that profile, 802.1x computer authentication option is chosen by windows.  That has to be changed to computer or user for the machine to function correctly on the network.
    On 1.2, this behavior was different.  The Windows device would auto select user authentication by default.  At other customer sites, windows devices auto select user authentication.  This of course needs  to be changed to user or computer in order to support machine auth, but at least the default behavior of user authentication would allow machines to get on the network and functional easily to begin with.

    i'm trying to authenticate laptops to Active directory before joining wireless AP (aironet 1240A)
    i'm using EAP in AP
    and PEAP with certificates in NPS
    i'm forcing laptops to use "computer authentication" through a GPO
    certificates already deployed to All machines
    policy is configured in NPS with "machine group" condition
    the problem i'm facing that their is some laptops are authenticated successfully while the others are not
    all machines are using windows 7 and located in the same Active Directory OU (same GPO applied)

    obviously the machine who send machine name (host\machinename) will be authenticated successfully
    and machines who send username (domain\username) will not be authenticated successfully
    now
    i tested those unsuccessful machines in a wired  dot1x switch using the same NPS policy and they were sending their machine names instead of usernames and they were authenticated successfully
    i suspected that this is maybe because of the AP config

    What exactly is happening/not working?
    Please keep in mind that with MAR, the PC needs to do machine authentication prior to user login, as the ACS will only allow users to login from previously authenticated machines.
    Is your PC doing machine authentication?
