Mac OS X auto start app
hello, hope that anyone out there will be able to help me out. i want to be able to start an application from when i turn on the power to any computer OS. i have read if i work with the registry on a pc that is one way of handling it. but is there another way, and in a Mac i would think is different so how would i go about it?
example:
power >> OS runs >> norton anti virus runs >> stays on
hopefully you can help, thank you.
WIth Mac OS X you first make your application a standalone runnable application. Then usingh the install procedure you put a link of the application into the start-up folder. It is pretty straight forward.
If you wantto automate it you better look for the procedures at an apple developers forum. You can become a memeber of the apple developpers forum, go to apple.com > (tab>) OS X > (mnubar>) developers. go from there. There are examples on that site.
That is what I know, never 'did it' though. Succes.

Auto-starting apps in Awesome3
Hi! I've been using Awesome3 for a while now. Until now I have been autostarting apps (conky, thunderbird etc) in my rc.lua file. But recently I found out that many people use their .xinitrc file to autostart things.
Just wondering, what do you guys do, and what are the pros and cons of each method?
I am starting to think that maybe the .xinitrc way is best because it does away with the need to check if a process is already running before starting it to avoid having multiple instances of the same app running. If I start all these processes in my xinitrc script which exits when Awesome does, they are automatically killed when it exits right?
Thanks for your advice!jasonwryan wrote:
I don't use awesome, but I start most things in .xinitrc as it is wm-agnostic.
If I decide to run another wm, I don't want to have to recreate an autostart file...
That's a very good point, especially since I was considering trying out dwm. I can't see myself leaving awesome in the near future, but I will probably eventually try something new and this would be a good idea in that context.
Joker, thanks for your function. This is the once I currently use:
function start_once (cmd)
-- Check if an application is already running; if not, start the application.
-- Automatically forks to background so awesome doesn't hang on startup.
command = "if [[ ! $(pidof "..string.match(cmd, "%w+")..") ]]; then ("..cmd.." &); fi"
os.execute(command)

HT4539 Is there any way to auto-start the Apple mail app?
Our company offers a 7/24 service where a user can leave a voice mail in our system and our mail server will send an urgent mail message to the iPhone of the employee on duty so it can be handled in a timely manner. The problem we are having is that if someone turns off their phone and starts it again (or if the user opens the running apps window and shuts down the mail app), the users are not getting those urgent emails.
While I understand having an auto-starting app would be undesirable, since every developer might start activating that feature, does Apple iOS6 have any way to tell the mail app to restart on iPhone boot? We have a few people using other smartphones with a competing O/S that sounds similar to "asteroid" ;-) and the mail appears to be always operational, even if you shut down the app.And be sure to set up Notifications for mail so the phone will beep, buzz, flash, whatever when a message comes in.
One issue though (discussed elsewhere): the phone will only Notify once. If you didn't hear or see it, there won't be any further warning (unlike, say, Blackberry's flashing LED). You're gonna have to grab the phone and at least bring up the lock screen to see if there are any notifications queued up. -

You may want to create an item in /Library/StartupItems.

Are you looking for an app which will startup the Z10 at a specified time?
I don't know of one. I have a feeling once OS 10.2 is available you'll see apps such as this.

I am need to disable an auto start program on my iTunes on my mini Mac
I am need to disable an auto start program on my iTunes on my mini Mac
Is there a way to have itunes delete the WMA file after creating mp3 copy?
No. But after the MP3s are created and you are satisfied that things went OK, just delete the WMAs manually and say "Good Riddance."
You can use an MP3 in multiple players, but you need to turn off any features that automatically change or move files, since one player will change something that messes up the other:
In iTunes, that means go to Edit > Preferences > Advanced and uncheck "Keep..." and "Copy..."
In Windows Media Player, that means go to Tools > Options > Library, and uncheck everything that starts with a verb such as "Rename...," "Rearrange...," etc. -

Mac mini won't start up when LCD TV connected
Hi,
I seem to have a problem which at the first glance looks similar to a lot others being discussed here. Just I am not sure if it really is.
Having received my Mac mini a few days ago I am trying desperately to use an LCD TV as display. Once connected powering on the Mac mini gives me that white screen you all know with the grey Apple symbol and the progress circle. At that point the TV says it’s running in 1080i mode. All looks good. -- Until a few seconds later the screen will turn black and not display anything anymore. (Just as if it would not get a signal.)
The TV is a quite popular one over here I would think: Philips 32PF9830, HDTV, with DVI and HDMI input ports. 1280 x 720p and 1920 x 1080i are supported video modes which I would like to run.
TV specs would be here: http://www.p4c.philips.com/files/3/32pf983010/32pf9830_10_psseng.pdf
TV and Mac are connected via a DVI-D cable. I’m having SSH and VNC access to the Mac.
Now with VNC I only get a proper desktop screen when the TV is not connected. When the TV is connected all I am getting presented via VNC is that white boot screen and the nice grey Apple logo. So with TV connected it appears the Mac doesn’t really start the window manager.
Looking at the process list this seems to confirm. Without having the TV connected after powering on the Mac I do see a process running called loginwindow.
When the TV is connected I don’t see that one, but instead 2 processes called WaitingForLoginWindow. See below for the full process lists.
All my trials configuring a good screen resolution via VNC before connecting the TV did not give a different result. Whatever I configure to be used as resolution, I am getting the above.
Funny enough running the Apple Hardware Test from the install disk shows a perfect picture in 1080i mode and also specifies 1920 x 1080i as screen resolution used.
Would anyone have an idea what’s going wrong here … and how to fix? I would suspect that communication between the TV and the Mac is broken. Would I have any chance to further troubleshoot on that?
Is there a way to tell the Mac not to do any auto configuration or auto discovery on the DVI port?
Any other ideas?
Marc

Auto start Front row when insert DVD

Thank youI couldn't get this suggestion to work on two different Macs. I don't think the Front Row.app is handled the same way as other applications. For example, you can't launch Front Row by double clicking on it inside the CoreServices folder.
