Mac OS X Server as a PHD Client

Hi,
I've got a development environment setup on a powerbook to match the production environment on a server. Both machines are running Mac OS X Server 10.4.9. Right now I have AFP setup on the production server machine and can access the Home Directory on the production server from the laptop.
What I would like to do is have these home directories sync. The user account on the production server was created using Workgroup Manager in the LDAP domain I have setup there. But when I enable the PHD settings for the machine in the computer lists or for the user no sync happens.
Can Mac OS X server act as a PHD client? And if so, am I missing any steps in the setup?
Production Machine
DNS setup and working correctly
Open Directory Setup and working with kerberos running
AFP setup and working with kerberos authentication
Added an LDAP account for the same user that is on the dev machine
Added the dev machine to a computer list and set the preferences of that list to do background PHDs (also tried this for the user)
Development machine
Created User account loaded up with data
Changed Directory access to accept LDAP instructions from DHCP
Can mount home directory from the finder
No PHD sync
Any ideas?
17" Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Ok. I was doing something a bit silly. I had the network user and the local user with the same short name. So when they were looked up the local user got preference. So I've fixed all that and am moving huge amounts of data across my humble 802.11g network now. Will have to leave it for a few hours.

  • PHD Clients default Save dialogs point to server if available

10.6.x PHD clients seem to default to the SERVER home folder (if it's available as a result of syncing or being on the LAN) This is quite a nuisance, as a user might be saving a file and then sleeping and taking their laptop home only to find it's on the server not in their local home folder.
Anyone else noticing this? Is this a new behavior? Possibly a misconfiguration on my behalf?
    This command:
    dscl /Local/Default -read /Users/<username> | grep Directory
    Shows the following various parameters:
    NFSHomeDirectory: /Users/$USER
    OriginalHomeDirectory: <home_dir><url>afp://server.domain.net/Users</url><path>$USER</path></home_dir>
    OriginalNFSHomeDirectory: /Network/Servers/server.domain.net/Users/$USER
It seems the open/save dialogs are using OriginalNFSHomeDirectory

I'm seeing the same for some clients and not for others, The clients are running 10.6.1, but are talking to 10.5.8 Server.
Each Mac was upgraded to 10.6 from 10.5.8 show the problem, Macs that were clean installed to 10.6 don't have this behaviour.
It looks like something to do with a preference that isn't coming across correctly from 10.5. I've already removed the ~/Library/Preferences folder as well as filesync, but no change.
Changing the affected users OriginalNFSHomeDirectory in Workgroup manager to /Users/username (so it points locally) doesn't fix the problem either.
I'm upgrading our servers to 10.6 in 2 weeks, I'm wondering if when the servers 'know' about 10.6 clients it will work correctly again...
    Any ideas Anyone?

  • Mac OS X Server 10.4.10-11 client user problems

It appears that since updating to Mac OS X Server 10.4.10 (and now 10.4.11), running on an XServe G4 with 2GB of RAM, QuarkXPress Passport 6.5 (and also 6.52) crashes at the splash screen when newly created network users launch it on client computers running OS X 10.4.8, 10.4.10 and 10.4.11. QuarkXPress runs fine when logged in as the computer owner with administrator rights.
Users created under Mac OS X Server 10.4.8 do not have this problem and are able to launch QuarkXPress 6.5 or 6.52 without a problem on these same computers.
Quark license verification is supplied by a QLA 4.5 server running on a seperate computer to the OS X Server system.
Can anyone give me any pointers as to what may be causing the crash? A couple of extracts from the crash log are listed below - the full log is available if anyone can decipher it:

    Hi
Have you tried repairing privileges and permissions on the affected clients?
You could also try creating a new admin account on the affected clients and logging in with that. Launch Quark and see if it behaves the same way. If it does not then its more likely some damaged/corrupted plist or preference in the primary admin account’s Home/Library/Preferences folder.
It could also be down to a damaged/corrupted font or Xpress Preferences file. Running the 10.4.10/11 update could be a red herring and its just coincidence that the issues you are seeing happened after the update. Generally an application crashes on launch or when opening a file because its had a problem building the font list or trying to access/load a font when the file has been requested. If your Font Management system is Suitcase remove the Suitcase Preferences folder from /Users/Home/Library/Preferences and restart the mac. Hopefully Quark should now launch. Redefine font sets from there. Quark keeps its Preferences file in /Users/Home/Library/Application Support/Quark.
Of course it could be none of these in which case start looking at drive/directory issues or possibly system issues. You may be looking at an Archive/Reinstall of the OS or Reinstall of the application. Don’t rule out a rebuild either.
    Hope this helps, Tony

  • What is the recommended number of clients per Mac server? Also what are some recommended specs when purchasing an Apple machine that will have Mac OS X server installed?

What is the recommended number of clients per Mac server? Also what are some recommended specs when purchasing an Apple machine that will have Mac OS X server installed? We have around 300 clients that need to be enroled on the Mac server. I want to know what is the recommended amount of clients a Mac server should contain. Also what are some recommended specs to make sure the server will flawlessly?

    Hello cpreasbeck,
Thank you for contacting Apple Support Communities.
I was able to find the following transition guide for Xserve that provides some workload guidance to determine performance when planning a server deployment.
    Transition Guide Xserve
    http://images.apple.com/xserve/pdf/L422277A_Xserve_Guide.pdf
On page 9, Performance there is a chart that provides maximum numbers of connected users for various activities such as file sharing, mail, web, calendar, directory services and Time Machine and the CPU used as a server (Xserve, Mac Pro, Mac Mini). This information is a bit dated as the referenced software is Snow Leopard Server (OS X 10.6), and the hardware is older also, but it should give you a general idea of what you might need to look for.
    Regards,
    Jeff D.

  • How do I configure my Windows clients to talk to Mac OS X Server 10.6

We had a MacAuthority technician install the server software for us, but he did not configure the Windows clients to talk to the server. I have tried several approaches, all evidently wrong.  Everything I have read says the Windows clients need "open directory" passwords, and he has set them up as "shadow passwords". Heaven only knows what else is messed up.  Please someone step me through this -- I will set them up as new users and see if I can make it work that way.

What sort of a resulting configuration or environment are you seeking?
If you're looking to have your Windows clients access storage on your OS X Server and to not authenticate with your OS X Server system, then you can dispense with some of the configuration steps.
However if you're looking to have the same login everywhere (Windows and OS X), then requirements become somewhat more complex.
And which version(s) of Windows?  Particularly if you have Windows 7, the options and requirements differ.
It's less common to have Windows configured to authenticate to OS X; it's more common to use Windows Server and its Activie Directory, either in isolation or in combination with an OS X Server in what's called a "magic triangle" configuration.  Alternatively (if you do want to set up this direct authentication of Windows and OS X Server and Open Directory), then see Mac OS X Server: Alternatives to Windows NT 4.0 domain control (PDC) technology (HT4945); that uses pGina.
And before you proceed here with any work involving authentication, delegation or related tasks, launch Terminal.app from Applications > Utilities folder, and issue the following non-destructive command to verify your DNS is correct:
    sudo changeip -checkhostname
You'll need to specify an administrative password when prompted.  Proper local DNS services are central to getting any of this stuff to work, and this command will (non-destructively) indicate if DNS is correct or if there are issues or changes needed.
The OS X Server 10.6 documentation is available from Apple, and that can help provide you with some background in this topic.  The 10.6 intro, 10.6 User Management, and 10.6 Open Directory would likely be worth downloading and skimming.  Probably also 10.6 File Services, if that's part of your goal.  (Running a server isn't quite as no-IT-required as might be hoped, unfortunately.  And I don't know of a short cookbook for this stuff; the steps and configurations can vary, depending on your local requirements - apologies on pointing to the docs here.)

  • Mac OS X Server 10.2.8 disconnecting OS 9.2.2 clients

Our business has some OS 9.2 clients that are being disconnected from our Mac OS X Server 10.2.8. This usually happens randomly during the day. We have looked at the cabling and we use a static IP address. Things look fine on the cabling end.
I am reinstalling Mac OS 9 cleanly and moving items from Previous System Folder. I am also installing an Asante PCI Ethernet card in a PowerMac G4 unit to see if that helps.

    Issue resolved.

  • Mac OS X 10.7.2 Lion Client that bind to replica OD 10.7.2 Server refuse to failover to look at Master 10.7.2 OD Server.

    Hi All,
I got a tricky situation here.
    My Setup
Mac OS X  Master OD 10.7.2 Server
Mac OS X Replica OD 10.7.2 Server
Clients are bind to the replica Mac OS X  server( 10.7.2) for MCX management and Bind to AD for Authentication.
    The tricky part comes,
When I shut down the replica Mac OS X server (10.7.2) to test whether the Mac Client (10.7.2) will failover and point it to the Master OD (10.7.2 ) Server.  It refuse to failover.
Like wise , I get the Mac Client (10.7.2) to bind to the master OD Server  , and I shut down the Master OD server  and test whether the Mac Client will failover and point it to the replica OD server for MCX. It refuse to failover and have the famous red light.
But If I do Manual Binding (work like a charm)
I will go into Directory Utility and manually  bind OD and AD , it work like a charm.
The Client will automatically do failover and point it to the replica or Master , depend on which OpenDirectory it bind to .
Single Command of authenticated binding  and using a binding script still produce the same result
    dsconfigldap -f -a "${ODM_SERVER}" -c "${COMPUTER_ID}" -u "${ADMIN_LOGIN}" -p "${ADMIN_PWD}"
My binding script (took from DeployStudio Bind OD script  )
    http://pastebin.com/ncXvAAgZ
I am at a lost. Any suggestion will be good.
    Thanks
    Roy

Someone in the Lion Server Forum might know?

  • Blocked Incoming FTP from Mac OS X Server Via The Mac Client Firewall

This problem began with Mac OS X Tiger's firewall and lives on in 10.6.2.
    Situation:
Anyone with Tiger through Snow Leopard connects to my Mac OS X Server, v10.3. They have 'Passive Mode' OFF in their FTP client. They are 100% successful logging in. Their FTP client sends the LIST command and the server successfully responds with the list data.
But the data can't get into the client's Mac. Why? The Mac OS X firewall BLOCKS IT.
The solution? Nothing sane! You have to turn the Mac OS X firewall OFF. There is NO OTHER SOLUTION.
All the settings on the client machine are perfect. I've been over them a hundred times over the years, tried every single combination possible. So please don't ask or I may bite you.
What's going on: Mac OS X Server 10.3, despite never accepting Passive Mode, sends the LIST data to all client computers in, you guessed it, Passive Mode. The Mac OS X firewall will NOT accept Passive Mode. Result: Catch 22. You can't do it. You are screwed.
Oh, but you could open all the Passive Mode ports in the firewall, and that would work? Be my guest. No way am I going to suggest that horror of a workaround to the hundreds of Mac clients I have accessing my Mac OS X Server.
So Apple, FIX THIS. Integrate FTP Passive Mode into the Mac OS X firewall already!!!

Ok. I was doing something a bit silly. I had the network user and the local user with the same short name. So when they were looked up the local user got preference. So I've fixed all that and am moving huge amounts of data across my humble 802.11g network now. Will have to leave it for a few hours.

  • Windows Client log to the Mac Os X Server ?

    Hello everybody
I would like to create a network with Mac OS X Server. I have Windows PC's that would also be in the network.
Does windows clients can connect to the Mac Server with a username and password ?
    Thank you.

At the simplest, sure, Microsoft Windows clients can connect to OS X Server services with appropriate credentials.  Mail and file sharing, for instance.
Beyond password-based authentication, a more advanced configuration is probably not as simple nor as easy as you might want.   Windows clients really want to use Microsoft Active Directory here and Kerberos authentication probably won't get you where you want.   (This assuming that you can get the Windows clients to accept OS X Server Kerberos authentication.)
The usual approach for single sign-on in heterogeneous environments is the so-called Magic Triangle configuration with both Microsoft Active Directory running on a Windows Server and Open Directory running on OS X Server.   This involves the two domains communicating.  It might be easier to get OS X clients operating off Windows Server, particularly with the use of profiles in more recent versions.
As an alternative to Windows Server, recent versions of the Samba server package include authentication services compatible with Active Directory, and you may be able to get your Windows clients to authenticate to that, and build that as part of a Magic Triangle configuration.  You'd need to download and configure the Samba server, and get the Samba AD support working.

  • Using my home Mac as a server

I would like to put my pictures on the web so that certain clients can view their photos with password. I photograph weddings and would prefer to make html slide shows of their wedding pictures so that they can view them anywhere with any computer. I would like the setup to be as simple and reliable as possible. I have an additional 250GB drive in the Mac that I wish to use as the storage of individual folders that contain the slide shows. If it would help I can get a dedicated 2nd Mac as the server if necessary. I was told that I would need a static IP address and some kind of software. I thought I could use file sharing on my computer but after reading numerous articles over the net, I am quite confused as to what I need. All I want to post is photo galleries that have about 600 to 700 pictures each that a client can view and that I can delete some or all of them after 30 days to be replaced by new ones. What software, hardware, etc. would be necessary to do this. Any suggestions welcome.

OSX server or client are both capable of handling this, as long as you have enough disk space. A site like this would probably only require a simple script on the server, server side includes (.shtml) and some javascript in the page itself. Frequently changing directories with basic authentication would probably best be done with .htaccess files. It isn't brain surgery, but there are reasons that people can make a living doing this kind of work.
A static IP would be needed so that when the users aim their browser at your site, they're not aiming at a moving target. Be aware that many/most/all ISPs that have home broadband networks block web servers.
Try turning on the web sharing, and try making one of these sites and see what comes of it. One cavaet that I see coming, is that the names of the images will probably vary from one shoot to the next, so that's why I was thinking that a server script to list the the image names and put them into a javascript array for the page to use to call for the different images.

  • NetBoot won't serve more than SEVEN clients at a time

I'm running OS X Server 10.5.8 to configure a lab via DeployStudio. There have been no changes to the server or network since configuring it for the same purpose in 2009.
But when using the current version of DeployStudio (1.0rc133) to restore 10.7.4 to client workstations (iMac 12,1), only seven (7) at a time will successfully NetBoot. Any remaining clients give up NetBooting after a few minutes and boot to internal hard drives (regardless of whether booting with "N" key, "option" key selection of NetBoot volume, or setting NetBoot volume in Startup Disk).
CLUE: If I interrupt any of the seven currently NetBooted iMacs while they are restoring via DeployStudio (by powering them off), any other machines on the network already attempting to NetBoot will be successful, up to the maximum number of seven. Left to run, seven DeployStudio sessions complete successfully.
The past two times I've done network restoration of Mac labs (with NetRestore in 2006 and DeployStudio in 2009), I did not encounter this behavior.
Among other things, I've tried restarting NetBoot service and the whole G4 Server. I tried switching from the external DHCP server to OS X Server's "DHCP server" service. Tried this "Reset NetBoot" suggestion:
    https://forgetcomputers.zendesk.com/entries/20335576-troubleshooting-the-netboot -service-on-mac-os-x-server
. . . no change in symptoms at all.
    Suggestions?
Same as 2009 (when it worked successfully):
    OS X Server 10.5.8
    PowerMac G4 Dual 1.0 GHz
    Network hardware and topology
DHCP server is via simple hardware router, and NOT from OS X Server
NetBoot images in default directory for OS X Server
DeployStudio images are served via AFP on same G4 Server
    Differences from 2009:
New client workstations: iMac12,1(Old workstations iMac 8,1)
DeployStudio current build(rather than build in 2009)
DeployStudio Client Master Images are OS 10.7.4(vs. 10.5.8 on iMac 8,1)
NetBoot images (build by DeployStudio Assistant) from iMac 12,1 running 10.7.4(vs. 10.5.8 on iMac 8,1)

Thanks, Jeff. But I mentioned trying that in the last paragraph before the link in my original post. No help.

  • Mac OS X Server 10.0.4 Update

    Hello,
I've been going through my software and downloading all the updates I can find. I was wondering if any of you might have this in your archives, Apple seems to have "lost" it and my usual haunts have come up empty.
I've recently bought Mac OS X Server 10.0, and I have some of the other OS X Servers (for the Xserve), it seems finding (just the) updates you need before OS X Server 10.3 is hit or miss.
In one example I'm trying to find:
Mac OS X Server 10.0.4 Update: Document and Software
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120035
    ( http://download.info.apple.com/MacOSX/062-8318.20010702/0z/10.0.4ServerUpdate.dmg.bin )
    Dumps you at:
" This URL is no longer used. If you get to this page, please go to:"
    http://www.info.apple.com/export/
    ... do strange loop.
    (My cookies are enabled)
I know this is old, thats not the point, why is this and for that fact most of the other updates missing?
I'm not real clear if 10.0 Server is update-able to 10.1 Server with the OS X 10.0-10.1 update CD for the regular OS X to which you may then UD to MacOSXUpdateCombo10.1.5, they mixed it up so you can't tell - or I can't tell.
Mac OS X Server 10.1: Chart of Available Software Updates:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=42741
    See what I mean?
Even OS X Server 10.0.3 Update would suffice. I'd appreciate you all poking around - I got nothing.
Mac OS X Server 10.3.x on, stuff is easy to find, Server 10.2.x and earlier is a pain and this is the last time (hopefully) I'll need to do this.
If anyone with these updates could contact me that would be great or just reply to this post, this server will not be online - just to be clear.
    Any help would be appreciated.

  • Can't connect to Mac Mini (ML Server)

I have a Mid-2009 Mac mini that's running the latest Mac OS X 10.8 Server. It's connected to my TV via HDMI.
For a long time, I had no issues connecting to it via Screen Sharing, SSH or AFP but recently all three will mysteriously fail. I know the machine is working because I stream iTunes content to my Apple TV and it's hosting a couple of web sites that it serves up just fine. The only attached peripheral is a Drobo S (2nd Gen) attached via FW 800. Drobo Dashboard and the firmware are completely up-to-date.
When it stops working, I have no alternative but to A) wait until I get home and B) force the machine off and reboot it. After a reboot, Screen Sharing, AFP and SSH all work fine for a while. It seems to conveniently fail when I'm away and need to get to it.
Note that it fails on all three protocols from outside AND inside. So this isn't a network routing or port forwarding issue. I'm a Mac IT professional with 15 years under my belt, so I think I know what I'm doing in that regard. Like I said it's worked fine for years and it's only been lately that these failures have been happening.
I can't seem to identify any rhyme or reason for this. It's a fairly clean installation with almost no 3rd party software installed on it.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

"Screen Sharing is currently being controlled by the Remote Management Service"
I've been fidgeting between the Server.app server Settings tab and the Screen Sharing checkbox in System Preferences Sharing pane all day.
I had tried "Share Screen" via Finder. After I tried "Share Screen" via Server.app from my client computer I noticed the above warning message when Screen Sharing in the server's System Preference Sharing pane was highlighted. I'm not sure which is cause or effect.
Everything is checked on the server "Settings" tab in Server.app on the server. Only "FIle Sharing," "Remote Login" and "Remote Management" are checked on the Sharing pane in System Preferences on the server.
Everything is checked on the server "Settings" tab in Server.app on the client. In this case, "Allow remote administration using Server" is checked and grayed out. "Screen Sharing" is checked on the Sharing pane in System Preferences on the client. (It may not have anything to do with a successful screen share connection, but it is on.)
Everything is now working better than expected. Thanks to you both for your help!

  • Can't see volumes with Mac os x server install

I'm having a problem installing MAC OS X Server on a RAIDed MAC PRO (3 drives @ RAID 5: Here are the steps that I have done so far with no luck: created a RAID level 5 with RAID utility from CLIENT OS install cd that came with mac pro. Created one giant volume with the entire contents of disk space on the RAID with the CLIENT OS install cd/RAID utility also. Rebooted, the MAC PRO, ejected the CLIENT OS cd, inserted MAC OS X server install CD. When I get to the screen where I choose my volume to install the OS on, I can't see any volumes. I was told by Apple and CDW (reseller) to go to disk utility and do an ERASE on the volumes, that should format the drive and should be seen by the OS X Server install. It didn't work. It's interesting that I can install the normal client OS after creating my RAID, Volumes, etc... But the OS X Server install DVD doesn't see the volumes during the install process, OR using disk utility from the OSX server install disk, but disk utility on the MAC OS X client CD sees it fine. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Eric

Does Apple support their RAID card in Mac Pro using Server? or does Server need to be updated? Minimum requirements for Mac Pro RAID card is 10.4.10.
You could try the cheat method: install everything on a single drive and clone it and see if it works.
From a discussion yesterday or Monday, only Apple drivers are supported on the Mac Pro (firmware?) and not 3rd party retail drives (a bummer) so you've got nearly $2000.
