Mac Pro 1,1 freezes on start up...
My first generation Mac Pro (dual 2.6 intel) has been acting sluggishly since I upgraded to Lion, now more recently it is failing on start up ..When I reset the computer, I get the chime, and then freezes (and some times leaves me with a messy screen image) ... I've tried reseting SMC and PRAM, I've reseated the RAM, I've booted from an older drive with Snow Leopard, I've booted from an install disk, I've even switch the graphics card pci port - ALWAYS freezes midway on start up ... I unplugged the computer overnight, and it did boot up briefly, but froze with in a few minutes of running disk utility ...
I assume this is hardware related, Does this sound like a graphcs card problem? Hoping it's not a logic board ..
Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Mike
NYC
Fill in the blanks.
Safe Boot? Tried it ... goes into safe boot mode but freezes about 1/3 way in ...
Repaired the drive like mentioned?
I recently replaced my internal start up disk with a new drive and ran LION on to that .. When I remove the new drive and try to boot from the original drive (which was working fine at the time I swapped it out) it still freezes ...
never use an older OS though so Lion on another drive - CLONE your system, pls! - or Lion Recovry. CCC can clone Lion + L Recovery.
What graphic card? ? the dust magnet or the limited support 7300GT? 8800GT? other? too many unknowns, but all of those could be culprit and are 'iffy.' -
NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT
Dust?
I've tried blowing it out ...
Your model has an SMC Reset button. Unplugging even overnight is not effective for 1,1.
I did hit the SMC reset button ... no luck.
Thanks for your help!!

Mac Pro suddenly shuts down and starts up again automatically
Hello Friends!
Got a really strange problem here, with my Mac Pro.
Specs:
2010 Mac Pro 2.GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
RAM: 16GB Kingston RAM
2x1000GB HDs (one from apple, and another Western Digital)
My Mac Pro suddenly shuts down, and starts up again automatically. No warning, no freezing - just a shut down noise and black screen. After 3-4 seconds, it starts up again.
Can someone help me with that?
All the best,
LukasI have an older MacPro 32 GBs RAM 2008 4 hard drives (Int. and two ext. 1 & 2TB). MacOSX 10.6.8
Just started shutting down and starting up for not reason a day or two ago. I'm not a programmer and these instructions are difficult for me.

Mac Pro 5,1 Freezes & Pinwheels at Boot, Corrupt Font to Blame?
Hello, all. This is my first post on the Apple Support communities as I have a very strange issue that seems to be nowhere else on the Internet, so I'll ask it here before running off to my local Genius Bar.
I'm running a Mac Pro Mid 2010, with a 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Xeon and 16GB DDR3 RAM. The only aftermarket/third-party component I have installed is a Blackmagic Intensity Pro internal video capture device, which, to my knowledge, works perfectly.
I am currently typing this on my third re-install of Mountain Lion, as I have not been able to advance to the login screen after I boot my Mac Pro, due to freezing and the spinning pinwheel.
I may have an idea what's causing this issue, but I'm not sure how to pinpoint it, remove it or figure out what to do. It may be tied to a conflicting Geneva font, located in (my name) > Library > Fonts. This is not the "True" Geneva font, as that is located in the System > Library > Fonts folder on my primary hard drive. This "impostor" Geneva has a ".ttf" file extension while the original Geneva's extension is .dfont.
Here's an image of the window that pops up:
Before the problem happened (and before the boot freezing happened), I selected "Move To Trash" and thought nothing of it, seeing as though it's a fairly standard warning message.
On my first re-installation, I selected "Move To Trash". I did not see the font in the trash but had other files there and securely emptied it. I rebooted shortly afterward and the system locked up/pinwheeled before the login screen. On my second re-installation, I selected "Ignore Conflict" but I ended up with the same result. Notice the impostor "Geneva" seems to have a lock near its filename. Maybe this is what's holding it up.
The only other common message OSX gives me on each installation is a prompt to install a Java SE 6 Runtime, but it seems to be through the standard Apple Software Update so I doubt it's anything that would corrupt an installation.
These font conflicts stem from fonts that I transferred over from my old PC when I first bought my Mac Pro after Christmas in 2010. No issues have surfaced until now other than minor aesthetic issues that were easily resolved.
Now, I'm left with a dilemma (which is what brought me here). I need to find a way to resolve this, as I think this issue may be what's holding my computer up. I've done research and found that tampering with system fonts will cause your Mac to crash at startup. I'm a freelance video producer so this has been causing me more than a few headaches when attempting to do my work, so I'm scurrying for a result ASAP.
I've tried nearly every method of fixing the issue...repairing my boot disk, verifying/repairing permissions, resetting my password and resolving ACL conflicts, unsuccessfully trying Safe Mode, resetting PRAM and now re-installing Mac OSX. This is most likely an issue on the OS end --- my hardware is working properly, its S.M.A.R.T. status is verified, and permission/disk repair/verify shows no errors. I also have a Boot Camp partition that runs flawlessly --- I can even access folders and files on my Mac from the Windows parition, so it's probably not an issue of a dying hard drive. There's something screwy preventing me from logging in, and short of the first boot after re-installing Mountain Lion, there hasn't been a way to log in normally.
I'd rather not reformat my entire startup drive because of what could be one file conflict, as I have a lot of personal data and presets I'd like to keep. Nevertheless, I have an appointment at my Apple Store's Genius Bar set up for Friday but I'm leaving it as a worst-case scenario as I'd much rather pinpoint these issues myself.
If you've made it this far, thank you for reading this long post. I wanted to be as specific as possible regarding the strange issues happening with my Mac Pro. Hopefully someone has a suggestion out there that doesn't involve reformatting as I'm 90% sure this boot error has to deal with this system font conflict. The other 10% wonders what needs to be done.
Thanks in advance!First check that you still can't boot as usual. If you can't, see below.
Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed, as well as certain other aspects of the configuration that may have a bearing on the problem. Don’t be alarmed by the apparent complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode, if possible. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing. If you can only boot in safe mode, you can still use this procedure, but not all of it will work. Be sure to mention that in your reply, if you haven't already done so.
Below are instructions to enter UNIX shell commands. The commands are safe and do nothing but produce human-readable text output, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects. I am not asking you to trust me. If you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them.
The commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. Step 1 should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
Step 1
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
PB="/u*/*/Pl* -c Print"; { echo Loaded kernel extensions:; kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}'; echo $'\nLoaded user agents:'; launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|org\.(x|openbsd)|\.[0-9]+$/{print $3}'; echo $'\nInserted libraries:'; launchctl getenv DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES; echo $'\nUser cron tasks:'; crontab -l; echo $'\nGlobal launchd configuration:'; cat /e*/lau*; echo $'\nPer-user launchd configuration:'; cat .lau*; echo $'\nGlobal login items:'; $PB /L*/P*/loginwindow.plist | awk -F'= ' '/Path/{print $2}'; echo $'\nPer-user login items:'; $PB L*/P*/com.apple.loginitems.plist | awk -F'= ' '/Path/{print $2}'; echo $'\nSafari extensions:'; $PB L*/Saf*/*/E*.plist | awk -F'= ' '/Bundl/{print $2}' | sed 's/\..*$//;s/-[1-9]$//'; printf "\nRestricted user files: %s\n" $(find ~ $TMPDIR.. \( -flags +sappnd,schg,uappnd,uchg -o ! -user $UID -o ! -perm -600 \) | wc -l); echo $'\nExtrinsic loadable bundles:'; cd; find -L /S*/L*/E* {,/}L*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,In,Keyb,Mail/Bu,P*P,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo}* -type d -name Contents -prune | while read d; do /usr/libexec/PlistBuddy -c 'Print :CFBundleIdentifier' "$d/Info.plist" | egrep -qv "^com\.apple\.[^x]|Accusys|ArcMSR|ATTO|HDPro|HighPoint|driver\.stex|hp-fax|JMicron|print|SoftRAID" && echo ${d%/Contents}; done; echo $'\nUnsigned shared libraries:'; find /u*/{,*/}lib -type f -exec sh -c 'file -b $1 | grep -qw shared && ! codesign -v $1' {} {} \; -print; echo; ls -A {,/}L*/{La,Priv,Sta}* L*/Fonts; } 2> /dev/null | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
The command may take up to a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A TextEdit window will open with the output. Post the contents of the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window) — the text, please, not a screenshot. You can then close the TextEdit window. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that. No typing is involved in this step.
Step 2
Remember that you must be logged in as an administrator for this step. Do as in Step 1 with this line:
{ echo "Loaded system agents:"; sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix\.cron)|org\.(amav|apac|cups|isc|ntp|postf|x)/{print $3}'; echo $'\n'"Login hook:"; sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook; echo $'\n'"Root cron tasks:"; sudo crontab -l; echo $'\n'"Log check:"; syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'GPU |hfs: Ru|I/O e|find tok|n Cause: -|NVDA\(|pagin|timed? ?o' | tail | awk '/:/{$4=""; print}'; } 2> /dev/null | open -ef
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Heed that warning, but don't post it. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
You can then quit Terminal.
To prevent confusion, I'll repeat: When you type your password in the Terminal window, you won't see what you're typing.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, set one before taking Step 2. If that’s not possible, skip the step.
Important: If any personal information, such as your name or email address, appears in the output of these commands, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
Remember, Steps 1 and 2 are all copy-and-paste — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output as text, not as a screenshot.
Please post the contents of the TextEdit window, not the Terminal window. -
Mac Pro display remains black after start up.
My 2008 Mac Pro display remains black after start up. It is plugged in properly and the light comes on, but the screen stays black. It first started doing this about a week ago, but after a manual restart or two, it would start up properly with the display working. Today the display has remained black every time I've tried to start up. Any suggestions for troubleshooting would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
Safe Mode uses a very simple way of talking to the screen -- it does not even load the screen driver, and it uses a very common low resolution.
If it does not work that way, it simply does not work. You need a replacement graphics card.

Mac Pro (2009) keeps freezing
Alright so I have a 2009 Mac Pro 4,1 desktop with a 2.66GHz Xeon processor. I'm having this ongoing issue (for the past 2-3 weeks) where after anywhere from a minute to say 20 minutes or so the desktop completely freezes. No kernel panics, just a frozen desktop. Keyboard & mouse are both completely useless & my monitor no longer goes into sleep mode after 7 minutes like I've set, so I have to hold down the power button on the front of the machine to shut it off. I brought it into apple and they kept it over night and ran all the tests they could throw at it. When I got it back they said my boot drive (a WD 2TB 7200RPM 64mb cache) was bad, and that was why it was freezing. They told me besides that the machine is 100%. So I went out and bought a brand new Seagate 1TB 7200 RPM 64MB cache drive, installed it in bay 1 then installed OS X Mavericks and did all the updates. That fixed the problem (or so I thought), so I put my Windows Drive (bay 2), iTunes drive (bay 3), & my time machine drive (bay 4) back in. Again all was well. Until today (little over a week since the last batch of freezes) when it started to freeze again. It never freezes for any specific reason or on any specific application.. It just randomly freezes. I've tried reinstalling mavericks at least a dozen times... No dice. I've tried different ram.. Again, didn't change anything. I even removed all my drives except my OS X boot drive (from bay 1) still freezes. Part of me thinks I might need to replace the Backplane Board.. I'm thinking it might be a SATA issue.. But I'm not sure enough to order the part. So if anyone with some more knowledge or experience with this sort of issue could help me out, that would be fantastic. To add to this, I've ran many different tests, all say my machine is issue free. I've also repaired and verified permissions many times. And before anyone says try safe mode.. I have & it still freezes.
ThanksI ran EtreCheck and this is what I got.

I notise that for some reason my Drive(s) 3 (iTunes) & 4 (Time Machine) are not mounted... this has me thinking maybe it's a sata problem? -
I have two issues which may or may not be related with my Mac Pro. First, off and on for several months is has been frozen when waking from sleep. I can hit a key and see my desktop with the windows I left open, but I get the spinning beach ball and the time is typically several hours behind. The only way I can get it to start is to restart from the power button. This typically happens overnight when my computer has been asleep for a long time. Sometimes I hear the fan run while the computer is asleep and I don't know if that is related. I've tried switching from Firefox to Chrome to see if that was the problem since I typically have a few tabs open on Firefox when it freezes, but that does not solve the problem. The next step I plan to try is to get a can of compressed air and clean the fan and check if the video card air intake might be clogged, based on information I have read in various forums. Does anyone have other suggestions for things to try to eliminate the freezing? Another suggestion I read was to get a new logic board battery installed but I hate to lug this thing into an Apple store unless I really have to. Most of the time I'm comfortable fixing things on my own.
The second issue is that when I reboot after shutting down the computer with the power button, it does not always load the startup disk. Sometimes I get the recovery system instead, and if I try disk repair, restore from backup, or the startup disk option from the apple menu, it cannot locate the startup disk. Usually after a few tries, I can restart it and get my desktop, but I'm not sure how long that will work. I hoped that resetting the NVRAM would take care of this but it has not fixed the issue. When I do disk repair, it says the drive is fine. I've also used idefrag to clean up the drive. I'm thinking my hard drive might be about to die and I should just get a new one, but I don't want to spend the money if that is not the issue. I have 83 GB free on the drive so space should not be an issue.
Any suggestions on fixing either or both of these issue would be very much welcome! I need to make this computer last at least a couple more years.

Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'Channel t|GPU D|I/O|n Cause: -' | tail | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Normally the command will produce no output, and the window will be empty. If the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window) has anything in it, post it — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the TextEdit window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that. -
Mac Pro 1,1 won't start/boot up
Hi all,
I have a big problem with my Mac Pro 1,1 (2,66 Core, 6GB Ram) - it does not start up.
I tried to boot in safe mode, but boot process stopped (spinning circle freezes). Then I tried to boot in single user mode and checked the Harddrive with fsck... The Drive was modified and seems to be okay. But the mac won't start. I tried to boot from the original Snow Leopard DVD and i got an Kernel Panic. Then I tried to get access to myy Harddrive via Target Disk mode but the Harddrivw wasn't accessable for my Powerbook G4 which I used has the Host Computer.
I've resettet the PMU and the Ram - nothing helped.
When I start in Verbose Boot, the Mac shows the following Info:

Can anybody help me? Any Ideas?
Thank you !!!Yes, that is what I wanted to know, and tells me it isn't with the hard drive or OS itself.
Not to fear, even English doesn't quite cut it at times.
I assume also you tried with ONLY minimum necessary:
mouse, keyboard and power to computer along with monitor.
If you have your OEM DVD that came with Mac Pro originally, that will not ever boot with original OS, your 8800GT requires 10.5.2 or later OS DVDs.
Your OEM DVD though does have Apple Hardware Test.
Hold 'D' on startup
See if that passes Extended Test.
And if you already did so, no need to do so again, repeated resetting SMC isn't a good idea. But unplug power and hit ON for 8 seconds (nothing happens) and then reconnect power and mouse/kb.
Make sure the 8800GT power is connected and card is (still) firmly seated.
Do a general check of everything, including Risers with RAM. -
Mac Pro 12 core freezing on Mountain Lion
My Mac Pro freezes intermittently while using different types of applications.. This started after updating to Mountain Lion. Why :(?
Tried:
ML Recovery - repairs followed by Safe Mode?
Cloned the system. and tried?
Hopefully people would keep their last OS around for couple months, do a clean install of the new OS, run Setup Assistant
You could of course have something that is not ML compliant, apps drivers plug-ins, whatever. -

Message was edited by: Kevin StanchfieldI have the same problem with my Mac Pro. I first experienced the problem a few minutes after powering it up with the stock factory configuration before installing any programs or migrating my old Mac data. None of the usual prescriptions (zap PRAM, reset SMU, etc.) work and the freezes are random but regular. Sometimes I can go for 3-4 days without an incident and sometimes the freezes occur within minutes of each other. In all instances, the freezes leave a GPU hex dump in the system.log so it's clear that:
o The problem is not related to third-party software and / or extensions
o The problem is not related to usage profile (i.e. whether or not the graphics subsystem is under heavy load or not) because I've experienced the problem just scrolling through email
o The problem is definitely related to the graphics card or PCI controller because every freeze is accompanied by a GPU hex dump
o Once the freeze occurs, the screen no longer updates but the mouse pointer, albeit sometimes garbled, moves around and the system is otherwise functional. I can ssh in from another machine and manipulate files, run diskutil, etc. However, I have not found a way to reset the graphics subsystem from the command line (if there even is a way) so ultimately I need to run the reboot command to "gracefully" restart the system. Again, this indicates that the problem is isolated in the graphics or PCI subsystem and is not a general memory, CPU, motherboard, or software issue.
10.5.2 and the Leopard Graphics Update did not help at all.
I spoke with several technical support reps at Apple Australia about this and, not surprisingly, none of them were aware of the problem (or at least wouldn't admit it) and had no recommendations other than to bring the machine in for repairs. Until Apple acknowledges and identifies the problem, submitting it for repairs is at best a blind shot because it could easily come back with the same problem as others in various forums have already experienced. For now, I've decided to limp along with the problem until Apple identifies the culprit(s).
Therefore, I strongly suggest that everyone that experiences this problem report it to Apple. The only way we can push Apple to acknowledge and address the problem is by flooding them with reports of the problem. Until then we'll just be blindly hoping for a solution... -
Help please - my Mac Pro has started locking up hard. I'm not seeing the Kernel Panic grey screen of doom, just a system wide lockup requiring a hard reboot.
Any pointers very gratefully received, thanks.

I also in the past have been able to get all the way through booting from the recovery partition and doing permission repairs, etc without hanging, as well as this fresh install on a new hard drive.
Per some suggestions on another forum, I booted without the Video Card installed, waited until it would normally have booted all the way into the OS, and then attempted to open the CD tray/change the volume to hear feedback. When I was about to try those, the machine rebooted itself as it does when it hangs, so I think it can be assumed it froze as usual and that the Video Card can be ruled out as a possibility?
I also booted into Single-User mode and ran fsck. The first time I ran it, it reported that the file system has been changed, and also that it appears to be okay. As usual, I ran fsck a second time, this time it reported only that the volume appeared to be okay. Upon reboot, it froze again, though it did run a little bit longer than previous freezes - still only about 45 seconds or so. -
Mac Pro 3,1 - freezes, shows strange pixels on screen and then restarts
My Mac Pro 3,1 sometimes freezes and shows strange pixelated objects on the screen and then restarts by itself. Is this a hardware issue or a software issue?
I'm running OS X Mavericks on it and everything is up to date. I have a lot of saved professional audio work on it that needs to be done and I can't afford to get a new Mac Pro. Any please help me out! Thanks a lot.Yes, there was a kernel panic today again.

Mac Pro 2,1 won't start up
I just ran the Apogee Duet installer from a new eBay purchase. The install CD was homemade. Following the instruction manual, I inserted the CD and when it finished the installation, the manual simply said to click "restart" to finish the installation, which I did. All the while I was thinking, they did not say to remove the disk. So, the Mac shuts down and won't restart bc the disk is still in the drive. I researched how to get the disk out of the drive, when the computer won't start up, and chose the method of holding down the button on the mouse after you push the power button on the Mac, when the computer starts up, eject the CD. This worked. I then played some songs through the Apogee converters using iTunes and then used Logic Pro 9 to see in the unit worked and it did. The computer ran great for a good 20 mins or so. Dinner time. I shut down the Mac and now it won't start up again. The light above the power button just flashes. Any ideas how to get it to start? Please help. Thank you.
Mac Pro 2,1
2x Quad Core Intel Xeon
2.66 Ghz
16 GB RAM
2 HD's
Logic Pro 9.1.8The light above the power button just flashes.
That indicates, "Not enough RAM is working properly to start up".
It is not a cause and effect with your new Installation, just a coincidence. It could have happened anytime. -
Using line out audio cause mac pro 1,1 freeze
Hello,
I have upgrade mac pro 1,1 osx from tiger to snow leopard (update to 10.6.8 - clean install))
Why every time I connect my speaker to line out cause system freeze/crash?
But if using internal speaker, there is no problem.

So I have to reboot manual with holding power button, but cannot load osx (blank screen), I try to hold smc reset button, don't work too.
So I unplug and plug the memory raiser, so finally everything back to normal. It can loading osx snow leopard normally.
So what is the problem?
Thank you,
DavidIt's a hardware fault. I suggest you make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have it tested. It's a free service. The repair won't be free, but if it's something simple, such as a bad memory module, you may be able to fix it yourself.

Mac Pro running leopard freezes when shutting down
Hi,
I am having problems with the Mac Pro that was assigned to me at my workplace. Here are some of its specs
it runs Leopard (10.5.8)
processor 2 x 3 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xenon
memory 32 gb
Hard disks: here's the issue, It shows 3 hard disks on the finder (more details below)
The first issue is that it won't shut down. When I try to turn it off the screen goes blue and freezes. As I read on some forums that people were having issues with Leopard shutting down, I left it on that state for a whole weekend and when I came back it was still frozen.
The second issue is that aslmanager executes periodically and consumes 100% of one of the cores. Luckily most of the time I can use the other cores to do the work, but for heavy chores I do need that extra power. I tried killing it, and it works for some time, but it restarts after a while effectively slowing down my work (I hate having to babysit the computer for hours while it computes, killing the aslmanager periodically, a workaround would be to make a script that periodically kills it but I think this issue is just a symptom of a graver problem).
My guess is that the computer has 4 hard disks, with one of them broken (system information shows 4 hard disks, but the finder only shows three). This somehow affects the operative system, which tries to ineffectively communicate with it before shutting down. Some process may also be logging the problem, creating huge log files that aslmanager then tries to manage.
My questions are:
- How can I test my guess to know if it is correct? I must say that a blue screen and a stray process are not a transparent way to convey information to the user about a hardware problem.
- How can I fix this issue? In case my guess is correct, would disconnecting the hard disk solve the problem?
Thanks a lot.
PS: Even though I don't have to pay for the electricity bill at my workplace, I do try to use as little electricity possible since I believe we are overexploiting our planet. This makes my issue with the Mac Pro even more nagging since I can't help but think that leaving it turned on the whole time and using one of its cores continuously is using a lot of energy.Take a look in Disk Utility.
Also, About This Mac to see what System Profile shows.
You could have two drives in a RAID configuration.
See if it has the Apple Mac Pro RAID controller (affects sleep)
* Disconnect any peripherals
* Clean OS instlal
* Disk Warrior
* Clone the OS (CCC or SuperDuper)
* Try running with Safe Boot
* Apple Hardware Test (your OEM DVD it shipped with, likely 10.4.x) and use D on startup to run
Now the bad news.
The directory and file system get worse and are corrupt and you need to repair and restore to get it back to working right, which is where Disk Warrior and SuperDuper come in.
Your business could get a more powerful Mac Pro or upgrade the processors even to 8-core 5355 or 5360s.
FBDIMMs use a lot of watts and create heat more than anything, too, and those need COOLING and a boost to the fans, so you want to run the fans and set 2-3 extra profiles for when you are running a heavier load. SMCFANCONTROL 2.2+
Apps that aren't multi-thread / multicore you have to wait and upgrade and up to the vendor to ship a more efficient version that uses all the cores (and threading) IF it is an app that can and will benefit. Not all will.
A couple backup sets of course is a must and most any business will have redundancy and a good recovery plan strategy in place. -
Mac Pro 5.1 won't start single flashing SIL reapeats
I have a Mac Pro 5.1 2010 quad core 3.2GHZ and 3GB original Apple installed RAM. Problem is my Mac Pro no longer boots or gives the start up chime. The status indicator light blinks one short blink and repeats and the fans and hard drives spool up but that's it. I've reseated the RAM chips as well as the processor and RAM daughter board with no change. I've also tried resetting the SMC using the power button method with no change. I've ordered replacement RAM which I'll swap out once I get it, but if that doesn't work I'm running out of troubleshooting steps. Anyone have any ideas? I would really appreciate any assistance. Thanks, Andy
Thank you. That gave me the idea to get all of the RAM back in the the Mac. It powered up, oddly enough. I hope it's obvious, but I've already tried to turn it on with all of the RAM installed. At any rate, when it finally turned on, it was down from 32 GB to 28 GB. I thought this was an "aha" moment, so I turned it off and pulled out the two bad DIMMs, replaced with 2 new ones and it would not start. Now I thought I would reconfigure the RAM the way "it used to be" with the (4) Samsung DIMMs in slots 1 & 2 (on both risers A & B) and the IBM RAM in slots 3 & 4...
When trying to get the Mac to power up previously I was trying various configs and ended up with: Riser A: IBM slots 1 & 2; Samsung slots 3 & 4; Riser B Samsung slots 1 & 2 and IBM slots 3 & 4. When it was down to 28 GB it was the IBM on Riser B/ 3 & 4 that was down. Well, I went back to this exact config and it powered up after "playing with" the power button...holding it in for various lengths of time until it responded. It did respond after 1-2 tries of say, one 4 sec hold, then another. It did all of this while initially giving me the repetitive pattern of the white light blinking every 4 secs (indicating there was insufficient RAM to start-up). When it did finally start up, it was back up to 32 GB. This is strange because I did nothing to the RAM but pull it out and put it back in and reverted to an older configuration as noted above (which recently resulted in 28 GB of RAM). Thoughts?
