Mac Pro froze now won't turn on

I plugged a usb cord (prom an Epson printer) into my 2008 Mac Pro, next thing I know everything is frozen. Turn off the Mac Pro now I can't get it to turn back on.  I've unplugged it from electricity and retried, I've taken off the two exterior hard drives that were connected via firewire and the usb printer, nothing seems to be bringing this computer back to life.  Any ideas or suggestions?  The computer was working completely fine a half an hour ago.
thanks  jeff

Ok  got it back on after waiting 45 minutes (reading every post on the internet I could find on the subject) I had reseated each module of ram (testing one pair at a time), each hard drive.
As for the Apple Hardware test I can't find it.  I purchased the family license (5 machines) of Snow Leopard (from Apple) and only received one DVD - I have a special CD case for these DVDs and I know I didn't lose the other.  I've tried to restart it both with the instal DVD and without the DVD holding the D key and neither way brings up the Apple Hardware test or any language page.
I've rebooted holding the C key and run the repair permissions on the boot drive from the install CD. I've zapped the Pram  the front light is on now full not blinking nor has it ever blinked during this ordeal.
Any suggestions on my next course of action as I know the problem has not been fixed and will come back when I need to work?
Thanks,  jeff

  • Mac Pro (Mid 2010) Won't turn on sometimes?

Hi sometimes when i try to power up my mac pro it won't turn on? like today i pressed the power button twice then it never starts up or plays the mac music it just sounds like its gonna start but never starts. after like 2 or 3 trys it will start any suggestions on what to do ? or any upgrades? its all stock right now.

No it does not blink. and i have tried reseting PRAM and SMC. Let me rephrase the problem, When i press the power button on my mac pro it will give power to my keyboard and mouse and audio interface, but the computer led above the power button doesnt light up and there is nothing going on in the actual computer screens won't turn on anything even if i let it run for 25 minutes it won't start up. so i have to force shutdown by holding down the power button for five or so seconds. Then the second time i hit the power button it usually works. and starts up correctly.
this happens every time. it usually takes me powering it up once and force shutting it down then powering it up again to work sometimes i get it on my third try? i have reset my smc by
Shut down and unplug the Mac.
Keep the Mac unplugged for at least fifteen seconds.
Plug the Mac back in and do not turn it back on for at least five seconds.
Press the power button to turn the Mac back on.
and i have reseted my pram by holding down command option p and r til i hear the mac music play again.
my computer is working just fine minus i have to start it up twice for me to get to actually use my computer.

  • My MacBook froze & now won't turn on.

My Macbook is not working. It first froze while I was using it, then it just turned off. I tried to turn it on but then it just stayed black but this time with a little blue square with a circle which is spinning. What should I do?

There are quite a few things you may try from the sidebar "More Like This", so if my suggestions don't help, you may choose to read through a few of those from others that had similar issues and how they resolved them.
    1) Get your original disks or 10.6 if you have it, insert it in your drive and restart with the C key down. Once you're started off the cd, you can choose the Utilities menu from the menu bar and choose "Disk Utility".  Select your Hard drive on the side and choose "Repair Disk", and after it's done -- if it's successful -- choose "Repair Permissions".  Once you're done, restart and see if it boots.
If it doesn't boot, you'll want to let us know if you've backed up your information or not. Please learn from this situation if you haven't, and when your system is working again, get yourself an external drive and start backing up your system with Time Machine.  If you have been backing up with Time Machine, great!  There will be a lot of other options we have to proceed.

  • Mac Pro LCD screen won't turn on

The LCD screen on my Macbook Pro doesn't seem to be turning on. I have restarted the laptop couple of times, battery seems to be alright and the keyboard lights up and I get the bootup audio, but no image on the screen

Hi chhophyel, and a warm welcome to the forums!
It may be the Video card, but try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), does a Gray Radian show?

Macbook Pro (2011) froze while working, forced shut down, now won't turn on. Grey screen with apple logo and spinning wheel for hours. Help?
Unfortunately do not know the operating system since I never updated anything and I can't get in to it.
    Thanks for your assistance.

If you want to preserve the data on the boot drive, and it's not already backed up, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is not fully functional. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
    1. Boot from the Recovery partition or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) Launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
    2. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
    3. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.

  • I tried to update the software for my iPhone 4S. It froze, and now won't turn off, or on, or sync.  Any ideas on how to fix this?

I tried to update the software for my iPhone 4S, 16 GB to the most recent version (8.1?).  I don't know what I was updating from, because I can't access that, but it was whatever was installed on it (I got it about a year ago, so probably 6.something).
It froze, and now won't turn off, or on, or sync with my macbook plus, which is what I have always sync'd it to.  (I backed it up and sync'd it right before I tried to update the software.)
Since it originally froze almost 3 hours ago, it shows a white screen with the apple on it and a line underneath.  When I try to sync with my laptop, it says it needs me to enter a passcode on the phone, which I can't enter because the screen is frozen.  So I'm unable to access the iPhone portion of iTunes.
I have tried to turn it off, with no luck.  I have tried rebooting my laptop and syncing, but I still get the same result.
Does anyone know how to fix this?
I really wanted to wait to update the software, but I was having internet connectivity issues for the past 3 weeks, and Sprint suggested updating the phone's software.
Thanks in advance for your help!

    Hi NWL1,
Thanks for the question. If I understand correctly, the iPhone won't update and is stuck. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help you resolve or isolate the issue.

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
    Have a great day,

  • MacBook Pro turned off on its own and now won't turn back on.

MacBook Pro turned off on its own and now won't turn back on.  Battery had 41% just before this happened and green indicator on power cord is showing, so it seems like it's charging.  What should I do?

The led on the power adapter should be amber if it is charging.  Green just indicates that it is supplying power to the MBP.
    Try a SMC reset:

  • My brand new MacBook pro charged last night but now won't turn on, help!

My MacBook pro charged fully last night but now won't turn on, the green battery light is flashing but no matter how long I hold the power button it won't start. I just bought the MacBook in January.

Well then it isn't really Brand New. Brand New kinda means you bought it yesteerday or 2-3 days ago.
In any event youy need to take it to Apple and have them fix or replace it.
You have a hardware problem that only Apple can fix.

  • My MacBook Pro shutdown after it said my USB was draining to much power and now won't turn on please help

Hi my MacBook will not turn on after it said my USB was draining to much power, and it shut down and now won't turn back on please help

USB power management is part of the SMC (system management controller).  Try to reset SMC: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Then get a self-powered USB external hub.  It takes power from a wall socket and saves the MBP power system.  Starting at $20 at BestBuy and similar stores.

My 5S just started doing this on Thursday: every fraction of a second or so it oscillates between connecting and disconnecting with the charger (USB or wall, doesn't matter). Since it's still under the limited warrantee, I took it to the local Mac dealer (I live in a small town w/out an Apple store) and they shipped it off. I'm waiting now for the replacement--telephonless, too!
What concerns me is that many people seem to be having this issue.
You were right to be suspicious of the Apple store employees. Once they replicated the behavior that you experienced, they should have immediatly offered to exchange your phone. Anything else, in my opinion, is unacceptable. As long as your phone is still doing it, I'd go back, ask for the manager and tell them to exchange your phone.

Please read the warranty paperwork that came w/your computer.
You have 14 days to return the computer w/no questions asked.
You have 90 days of FREE phone tech support on top of your standard 1 year warranty unless you also purchased AppleCare which gives you an additional 2 years of coverage plus FREE phone support.
Strongly suggest that you take FULL advantage of the above before it runs out.  Let Apple deal w/the problems.
If you DIY and mess up, your warranty will be VOIDED!

  • Power Mac G4 (APG Graphics) won't turn on

    Hi,
My Power Mac G4 (APG Graphics) won't turn on at all. This is not the first time, it also happened a little over a year ago and after about 9 months I plugged it in and it worked fine for almost six months. Each time there had been what could be considered "trauma," the first time we had moved about 400 miles and although it rode in the car with me, there was a lot stuffed in with us so it wasn't as gentle a ride as I'd hoped. This time we had an ice storm and I was actually using it when some power surges took place. It was plugged into a surge protector and everything else that was plugged in works fine.
When I press the power button, nothing happens. No chime, no light, nothing. I've pressed the PMU button and replaced the battery. I've switched to a different power cable. I've removed each of the RAM sticks and tried starting it while each was removed and after reinstallation. I've disconnected all peripherals. I'm stumped!
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I followed the procedure I found through other discussions, but when I went to the link that was suggested in the previous post I found that I did one thing wrong. When resetting the PMU didn't work the first time, I continued to press it after each subsequent attempt. So after changing the battery, I pressed the PMU. After checking the RAM, I pressed the PMU, etc. According to the directions in the link, pressing the PMU more than once could wreck it completely. Does anyone know how to tell if I've done that or if I can do something else now? Thanks.

  • My Mac Pro starts up when I turn on the power, BEFORE I switch it on with the button, why? Plus, my computer keeps freezing and blacking out.

My Mac Pro starts up when I turn on the power supply (when I plug it to the outlet), BEFORE I switch on the button on the computer, why is this happening? Plus, my computer keeps freezing and blacking out and I'm forced to restart it, that's when the compter starts on its own when I turn on the power.

    Hello Engender,
I should have followed up with a progress report because I eventually eliminated all the problems I was having with my Mac Pro, now it's behaving like a new computer… beautifully.   I did originally take Grant's advice above, changing the setting that I had in the System Preferences > Energy Saver but that only stopped from rebooting on its own when I shut down my Mac properly.  Otherwise it continued to restart on its own after freezing or crushing when I switched on the power.  I took my machine to the Apple Store and after many tests they couldn't find anything wrong with it.  I was very depressed about the whole business.
It was after going onto many of the other Apple related websites that I discovered that it wasn't a faulty power switch or fan, as as I originally thought, but found out that my problem was related to the Graphic Card and possibly I did not have enough ram (I had the original amount of 2 GB).  The original card that came with the computer: 512 MB ATI Radeon X1900 XT was over heating and forcing my machine to shut down, I think it was because I had upgraded to OSX Lion which on its own requires at least 2 GB of ram to operate well.  I added 4 GB of Ram to the 2GB I had (4GB kit (2GBx2), Apple 240-pin FBDIMM, DDR2 PC2-5300 upgrades for Apple Mac Pro (4-core) 1st Gen. - 2006-2007 Desktop/PC, CT579443 from Crucial.com about $160 for the set) and replaced the Graphic Card with ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024 MB from Apple (around $260), (ATI Radeon HD 5770 Graphics Upgrade Kit for Mac Pro (Mid 2010) - Apple Store (U.S.))  This card works very well with my original Mac Pro 2008.  I installed it about two weeks ago and no problem with it starting on its own, over heating or freezing.  OSX Lion works well and I'm thinking of upgrading to Mountain Lion once I learn that my Mac Pro 1.1  will work with the new hardware I installed.
Your problem could just be the power cord but I agree with you that doesn't sound right, when I mentioned faulty switch I meant the part where the power cord meets the power button, the unit which houses the power distribution, I thought at first that it could be faulty but changed my mind because of the computer overheating.
I don't know if this is of any help to you but I hope your trouble will be solved with the new cord.
