My Mac Pro starts up when I turn on the power, BEFORE I switch it on with the button, why? Plus, my computer keeps freezing and blacking out.

My Mac Pro starts up when I turn on the power supply (when I plug it to the outlet), BEFORE I switch on the button on the computer, why is this happening? Plus, my computer keeps freezing and blacking out and I'm forced to restart it, that's when the compter starts on its own when I turn on the power.

Hello Engender,
I should have followed up with a progress report because I eventually eliminated all the problems I was having with my Mac Pro, now it's behaving like a new computer… beautifully.   I did originally take Grant's advice above, changing the setting that I had in the System Preferences > Energy Saver but that only stopped from rebooting on its own when I shut down my Mac properly.  Otherwise it continued to restart on its own after freezing or crushing when I switched on the power.  I took my machine to the Apple Store and after many tests they couldn't find anything wrong with it.  I was very depressed about the whole business.
It was after going onto many of the other Apple related websites that I discovered that it wasn't a faulty power switch or fan, as as I originally thought, but found out that my problem was related to the Graphic Card and possibly I did not have enough ram (I had the original amount of 2 GB).  The original card that came with the computer: 512 MB ATI Radeon X1900 XT was over heating and forcing my machine to shut down, I think it was because I had upgraded to OSX Lion which on its own requires at least 2 GB of ram to operate well.  I added 4 GB of Ram to the 2GB I had (4GB kit (2GBx2), Apple 240-pin FBDIMM, DDR2 PC2-5300 upgrades for Apple Mac Pro (4-core) 1st Gen. - 2006-2007 Desktop/PC, CT579443 from Crucial.com about $160 for the set) and replaced the Graphic Card with ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024 MB from Apple (around $260), (ATI Radeon HD 5770 Graphics Upgrade Kit for Mac Pro (Mid 2010) - Apple Store (U.S.))  This card works very well with my original Mac Pro 2008.  I installed it about two weeks ago and no problem with it starting on its own, over heating or freezing.  OSX Lion works well and I'm thinking of upgrading to Mountain Lion once I learn that my Mac Pro 1.1  will work with the new hardware I installed.
Your problem could just be the power cord but I agree with you that doesn't sound right, when I mentioned faulty switch I meant the part where the power cord meets the power button, the unit which houses the power distribution, I thought at first that it could be faulty but changed my mind because of the computer overheating.
I don't know if this is of any help to you but I hope your trouble will be solved with the new cord.

Why?  Not sure, could be lots of different reasons.
However, if you'd like to know how to fix the issue, then have you tried the troubleshooting steps listed inthe article that you linked from?
When in doubt: Restart, Reset, Restore from Backup, Restore as New.

I haven't used my eleven month old Mac book pro in two months and when I turned it back on it gets stuck at the silver wheel with the wheel of death spinning it has been like this for two hours

Could you specify the model of MacBook and the OS X it's running, please? Some of the advice or references vary along with the system, so this could be helpful to formulate a reply. I've never used a Guest User selection, but do have more than one User.
If the computer does not have an optical drive, you may be able to boot it into a recovery disk mode or something; in an attempt to see what is wrong and maybe fix it.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Macbook Pro had blue screen of death.  Now hard drive wont wake up.  HELP!  Computer keeps freezing and crashing.

About a month ago, the "beach ball" appeared on my screan.  I rebooted the computer only to a blue screen.  Was instructed to Safe Boot and repair my files.  I got the computer to let me in.  My only problem now is, when i open the mac, my hard drive does not make the wake up noise?  Im not so computer savey so im not sure what im experiencing.  My mac also sees the "beach ball" on occasion followed by it freezing and me having to hard reboot it.  What am i experienceing?!  Also when computer is booting up, a black screen with white lettering jimbo-jamble appears for a solid 30 seconds to a minute.  I am worrying because my macbook was bought refurbished about a year ago, never had ANY problems, and JUST LIKE THAT...i got a world of issues.

"You need to restart your computer" (kernel panic) message appears (Mac OS X v10.5, 10.6)
I dont have a Apple store around me.  Nearest is around 5 hours away.
Apple stores are not the only places that repairs Macs.  Check to see if there is an AASP closer to you - How to find your nearest Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP)

  • How can i disable imessage from automatically starting up when i turn on macbook air?

how can i disable imessage from automatically starting up when i turn on macbook air? i dont know my imessages to pop up on my laptop when it turns on. But i dont want to disable imessage totally on my macbook.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
First of all, check that Messages is closed when you turn off your MacBook. This is so important because, by default, OS X will reopen all opened apps the next time you start your Mac.
Apart from that, when you go to  > Shut Down, or  > Restart, in the window you see to restart or turn off your MacBook, unmark "Reopen windows when logging back in". This will avoid that your Mac opens all opened apps the next time you start the MacBook, so Messages won't start automatically at startup

  • My computer suddenly refuse to start. When I turn it on it gives the startup sound but the screen is grey and after a while a little folder icon with a question mark inside turns up. It doesn't blink. What to do? Nothing happens if I try to start up from

As I say my computer, a mac mini refuse to start. When I turn it on it gives the startup sound and the screen turns grey and stay that way for a long time. And in the end a small folder icon with a question mark inside (it doesn't blink) turns up in the middle of the screen.
I have tried to start up from the installation CD holding down the C key on the keyboard. Same result. I have tried different key combinations while starting up. No result or rather same result. Nothing. Is the computer suddenly dead?
I was about to buy a new computer but I need access to my data on this one (I write this on an iPad) but hven't yet found a way.
    Anybody have any good advice?
I thought it was a software problem, that the computer couldn't find the startup software or something and maybe it is, but I am beginning to fear that it could be a hardware problem.

You need to re install OSX. If you have the dmg file downloaded via torrentz this is how you can create a bootable external HD or Flash drive (8 GB+)

  • Mac Pro starts up to black screen

My 2 year old MacBook Pro will not go past the grey apple, loading bar grey screen. Every time I attempt to start my computer up, after the grey screen, the screen goes black.  I've attempted to go to recovery mode, my mouse works, however I am unable to select the recovery mode options. I also attempted to restart in safety mode, but it fails. Has anyone else experienced this?

    Hey there missind33,
It sounds like your computer is not completing the startup sequence, even after performing a Safe Boot and booting to the Recovery Partition. I would start with these steps from the following article named:
Mac OS X: Gray screen appears during startup
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts2570
Disconnect, test peripheral devices and network cables
Note: "Peripheral devices" refers to external devices other than what came with your Mac, such as hard drives, printers, or hubs that you connect via a USB or FireWire cable.
Shut down your Mac. If necessary, hold your Mac's power button for several seconds to force it to power down.
Disconnect all peripheral devices such as external hard drives or printers (leave only the display, a keyboard, and mouse connected).
    Disconnect any Ethernet cables.
    Start up your Mac.
If you can start up this way, one or more of your peripheral devices (or installed software related to the device) is probably causing the gray screen issue. Connect one device, then restart your Mac to test for the issue. Repeat the process until you locate the device at issue. Make sure the device is powered if it needs to be to operate correctly. Check with the manufacturer of the device for support or possible software driver or firmware updates that may be available for the device. Try a different cable with the device if possible (such as a different USB or FireWire cable).
Note: If you have multiple peripheral devices and the issue only occurs when they are all connected, but not when each device is the only peripheral connected, see the Additional Information section below.
If you are using a desktop Mac with a third-party keyboard and/or mouse device, and the issue still occurs, try starting up with an Apple keyboard and mouse connected instead. Try starting with no keyboard and mouse connected, then connect them after start up. Also, try a different USB port on your Mac.
If the gray screen issue persists with no devices connected, go to the next section (with the peripherals still disconnected).
There is additional troubleshooting in the article to use if needed, and even if you come to a step that you have done already, I would do it again, after having done the steps that came before it.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Take care,
    Sterling

In Windows 7, how to make Firefox start automatically when I turn on the computer. Note, I am asking how to do this with Windows 7, not xp, not vista.

You need to place a shortcut to open Firefox in the Start > Programs > Startup folder.<br />
That is basically the same in all Windows versions.

  • In windows 7, how do I make firefox start automatically when I turn on the pc.?

In windows 7, how do I make firefox start automatically when I turn on the pc

That worked, thanks. When I turn on the pc, I almost always go to the internet before anything else, so this eliminates one step. It doesn't seem to save any time, however, but it is easy. If anyone else wants to try this, it looks like it's very easy to undo if you change your mind.

  • My computer tells me I purchased the Rod Stewart Christmas album, but I did not. How can I get iTunes to cancel this "purchase". Also this thing has just started playing when I turn on my computer, how do I stop it?

It is probably too late to cancel it, but contact the iTunes store support staff at http://www.apple.com/emea/support/itunes/contact.html and see what they can do for you.

Thank you Shootist007. I cannot do even Update now. I probably should have spent the same amount of money on a new IMac!
No not really. If this is a brand new Macbook Pro take it back for a refund. Apple has a 14 day No Questions Asked return policy for Full refund.
Take it back, get the Full Refund (DO NOT LET THEM TRY TO FIX IT. YOU BOUGHT A NEW COMPUTER NOT ONE THAT HAS BEEN WORKED ON OR NEEDS TO BE FIXED) and then decide whether to buy another Macbook Pro or the iMac. Or you could return it, get the Full refund and buy some other brand computer.

The Mac Pro - the desktop computer - does not support Airdrop, if that's what you mean.

  • Why mac pro shuts down when idle, even when charging ipad?

why mac pro shuts off when idle, even while charging ipad?

Thanks for replying. I have a macbook Pro. In my energy saver, I ticked the following: put hard disk to sleep when possible, wake for network access and automatically reduce brightness before display goes to sleep. My boyfriend has the same settings but I can charge my ipad with no interruption on his macbook Pro and it doesn't shuts off when idle. Thanks for your help
