Mac/xp printing: my story (and solution)

I'm posting this in case it can help others as inexperienced as me and new to using an apple computer. I recently got a MBP & tried to get it to print to a printer (Lexmark P6250 printer-all in one model) connected to my home network that has 2 pc's on it. The printer was connected to one of the PC's by USB and the other computer was mapped to the printer. I tried a few different ways to get my macbook to print to this printer (setting up a pc as a print server, using an airport express, directly mapping to the pc the printer was connected to, etc.) Of course, as i tried each of these, things took some trial and error because of my unfamiliarity with mac and the processes i was trying. Bottomline: none worked because i didn't find a driver for my printer that would work. Unfortuneatley, again because of my inexperience, i didn't really think about the driver too much. I had installed a Mac printer driver from Lexmarks website, but it was only for USB as it turns out. Not knowing this, I figured if i could get the MBP to see the printer, i was home free...not true. What i ended up doing was to buy a new printer (lexmark x4530), wireless, that works with mac and pc's. i set it up & all computers can print to it. No recommendation on the printer is intended as i just got it going. If you're in similar circumstances, first see if there's a driver out there that will work with your printer. If you can't find one, then it's likley no connection method will work, so don't waste your time.

Hello, I am new to the world of MACs ( I am a PC person) and I am doing this as a proxy for my step son's computer. We bought him the Lexmark P6250 for Christmas and we can not get it to print. We can print a test page and scan, but no regular printing. When you try to print, it attempts to do it but then the status changes to "stopped" and nothing happens. We have the most recent driver for the printer (10.4.1) per Lexmark. We installed it but no go. So, we cleaned off all the printers and tried to reinstall a printer using the new driver, still no go. Now here is the rub, could all of this be because we are using an "upgraded" driver and not the printer installation disk? If so does anyone know where I can get the installation disks? My step son has lost the ones that came with the printer. Thank you for any help you can offer.

    Hi Rich ~
One place to find some is over at Version Tracker:
    http://www.versiontracker.com/macosx/tiger/
Enter " cd dvd label " into the search field on the top right area and quite a few come up. You can download them and try them out from there. They also have reviews from people who have used it and other useful info.

So, printing an image from PS is OK, but from LR it's dark?
Do both have the same printer ICC profile selected?

  • HP 8600 pro officejet would feed and print cardstock. need and solution b4 i return it!

I have changed the settings and it still will not feed thru. When I pull out the try it the paper is lifed up and sittting on the edge but just did not get picked up. I need this to work, otherwise I'm taking it back.

HP has recently released a firmware update for the 8600 series printer.  The firmware has several product fixes/enhancements.  Below is the list:
    1) Enhance ePrint Diagnostic report for ePrint Setup
    2) Improve ease of wireless setup
    3) Enhanced Embedded Web Services
    4) Improve Print Quality
    5) Improve Ink Usage
    6) Improve paper path performance
    7) Improve Digital scan performance
The firmware version is CLP1CN1304AR and was released 2013-03-21.
As mentioned in 6), the paper path performance has been improved and this was directed at printing with Cardstock/Photo Paper in the 8600.
There are 3 different versions of the 8600 and I will provide links below to the download page for this firmware update for each.
    8600 Base (N911a or CM749a)
    8600 Plus (CM750a or N911g)
    8600 Premium (N911n or CN577a)

  • Back to My Mac not working-a diagnosis and a solution

    Hello all,
I own a small business and relied on Back to My Mac while traveling. I have had connection issues with BTMM since MobileMe was discontinued. I have found a solution but it is not an Apple solution. Skip to the end if you'd like the straight dope.
FYI: I have exhausted all possible Apple-centric solutions, to the best of my knowledge. This was verified over the phone during an extensive troubleshooting session with a senior Apple specialist. All Macs and OS involved are optimized (in theory) to work with Back to My Mac. The appropriate file sharing options were checked. Users had appropriate access privileges. I have a valid MobileMe ID that has transferred over smoothly to iCloud. Firewall settings were not the issue.
But before we go further, if you are having BTMM connectivity issues, you might want to examine this thread:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4071540
And see if it does the trick for you. It seems to have worked for a lot of people. But if it doesn't, please read on.
I have an iMac at my office that I connect to. I have a MacBook that I use to make the remote connections. Before MobileMe was discontinued, I read all support docs on how to make the transition to iCloud. Nevertheless, once MobileMe was discontinued, I began to have BTMM connection issues. My Macbook could "see" my iMac, and vice versa, but once connection was attempted, either through "Share Screen" or "Connect As…",  the status bar would run indefinitely and no connection would complete.
First, I tried the Keychain solution indicated above. No dice.
Then I saw the System Preferences>iCloud message that Back to My Mac required NAT Port Mapping and/or Universal Plug and Play settings on my router. I have an old Linksys router, and I was able to upgrade its settings to UP&P, but not to NAT Port Mapping. The situation did not improve.
I went to an Apple Store, spoke with a pair of salespeople who informed me that the problem would most likely be solved by replacing my old router with Airport Extreme, which would automatically upgrade my network to the necessary UP&P and NAT-PM protocols, and if any issues existed after that, they would probably be firewall-related, which I could either fix on my own or talk to an Apple person about.
After installing Airport Extreme, the situation did not improve, and I called Apple Support. I entered the serial number into the web page, and was informed that I was not qualified for tech support because my warranty had expired, even though I had made the purchase the previous evening. I checked the option that indicated that I thought this was in error and that I was in fact qualified, and ten minutes later, I received a phone call from Apple.
At first, I was on the line with a Airport Extreme specialist, who ran down the Airport Utility checklist. With my wife at the Macbook at home, and myself in my office at the iMac and on the phone with the Apple specialist, the troubleshooting began. Once it was apparent that nothing was working, I was transferred to a "senior" specialist who indeed knew everything under the sun about networking and Back to My Mac, at least as far as I could tell. We checked various settings on all devices, Airport configurations, iCloud account validity, my network's firewall settings, etc.
Finally, the specialist suggested we check the settings on my home router, which was supplied by my ISP and not an Apple device. I asked him why. He said that if we enabled UP&P and NAT-PM on my home router, that would probably help make the connection. I informed him that while that might be a short-term fix, I travel as part of my job and need to make remote connections to my office, often from places where I have no control over the router settings. He informed me that because of those "variables" I might very well continue to experience connection issues, and that in some locations I would be able to connect, and some, not.
On the heels of all the time and money spent thus far, I was in disbelief. We spent some more time affirming beyond question that he was actually telling me what I thought he was telling me, and I cordially thanked him for his time and we ended the phone support session.
THE STRAIGHT DOPE: I learned from a senior Apple specialist that network and router settings not only have to be just right at the server location but *also* the remote location in order for Back to My Mac to work. Simply having an iCloud ID is not always enough. If you travel, you most likely have no control over router settings at your hotel, coffee shop, etc., and if you rely on remote connections as part of your job, you can't afford to take the chance that wherever you reside might not be BTMM compatible. I signed up for LogMeIn Pro, at a cost of $59.95 a year. It has screen sharing, file sharing *and* iPhone access, which BTMM does not offer. My remote connections are now almost instantaneous and without issue. Problem solved.
Please note, I have no ax to grind with Apple, I enjoy using their products and believe they are superior to Windows machines. I am also more than happy with the level of expertise, courtesy and efficiency of their support people. The Airport Extreme that I purchased is pretty cool, has kickass wireless signal, and has reduced the amount of wiring on my desk thanks to its wireless printing and hard drive capabilities. I feel a little burned that I bought it for no reason, but I have 14 days to return it, no questions asked. We'll see.
In conclusion, Back to My Mac does not seem to work as advertised. I am curious if anyone has had a similar experience. Hope this helps someone or at least, saves you some time.

Thanks for your thorough post. I too need to use BTMM on almost a daily basis for my job, and it has fallen short countlness times. I too have taken great pains to check all of the typical trouble shooting steps within iCloud and in the Apple keychain on each Mac etc, but after the latest rounds of system updates from Apple a few weeks ago to Mountain Lion, BTMM on one of my Macs is completely broken and unusable. I would concur that if you need remote access for "real" mission critical use, just bite the bullet and pay for a service like LogMeIn. You won't regret it and you will get real software support.

  • How can I print to my HP OfficeJet 6500 Wireless Printer from my iPhone 4S which used to work before AirPrint printers were even available? (running Mac Lion OS, all software and HP sw updates are all performed)

How can I print to my HP OfficeJet 6500 Wireless Printer from my iPhone 4S which used to work (on prior iPhones) before AirPrint printers were even available? (running Mac Lion OS, all software and HP sw updates are all performed)
I don't get it, I read one post about why would we have to buy an AirPrint Printer when we have used the "print to a wifi printer" just fine in the past?  Yes I feel that's exactly what's happening to me now too. I want to print from my iPhone and iPad to my WiFi Printer which is also now connected to my Airport Express WiFi network just fine. No problems.

Very glad you added that bit of information because I see different problems similar to this.  I want to share with them what you did and hopefully you not only fixed your specific problem but you can lend some more advice to others with problems like this. Thanks!
Don't forgot to say thanks by giving "Kudos" if I helped solve your problem.

  • Mac OS 10.5.4 broke printing from iMac, and MacBook Pro to Brother ML-1740

I have had my five Macs (iMacs, Mac Book Pros, Mac Books) all printing via an Air Port Express to a Brother ML-1740 Laser Printer. As each one downloaded and was upgraded to 10.5.4 they lost the ability to print to this printer. They can still see it, but print jobs just hang in the queue with "Connecting"... I have restarted all networking equipment. The remaining 10.5.3 unit can still print to the printer. Where do I even start in troubleshooting this? How can a mere dot upgrade to Mac OS kill printing for this printing? Do they not test backwards compatibility at all!?!?!?!?

Have you tried changing the Leopard firewall settings?
(System Prefs > Security > Firewall)
    from <Allow only essential services>
    to <Allow all incoming connections>?
I have an HP Officejet Pro AIO network printer (not wireless) and printing broke with 10.5.4. Turning off the Leopard firewall (as above) allowed me to print. Not a great solution maybe, but a very useful troubleshooting step. Try it!

  • Printing in black and white only - looking for a definitive solution

    Hi
I've been trying to find out once and for all how to make sure my black and white text documents are printing only from the large pigment-based cartridge (525 PGBK), rather than using the smaller black dye-based cartridge (526BK), or from a combination of the dye-based colour cartridges. I've trawled through endless forums, and finally in frustration I recently called Canon's Australian phone support team.
I thought I'd nailed it. The phone support person told me that if the document I'm printing is definitely black only, then all I need to do is print normally, with grayscale DE-selected. He said nothing about also de-selecting duplex. But I've since read online advice that contradicts this in relation to other models (I haven't found any advice based specifically on the MG6150, apart from the phone guy from Canon). Some say you need to SELECT grayscale and DE-select duplex; others say to DE-select both grayscale and duplex; others say to select grayscale, DE-select duplex, and also select dither (on my screen that's under Main > Print Quality > Custom). I'm now wondering whether I've nailed it after all.
If anyone from Canon is reading this, can you please give a definitive answer to these questions:
    1. How do I ensure that my black and white text documents print only from the large pigment cartridge?
    2. Can I print in automatic duplex using this method, or do I have to do manual duplex?
    2. Will this also work for purely black and white NON-text documents as well (e.g., photos that have been converted from colour to B&W)?
    3. If not, is there another way of forcing B&W NON-text documents to print from the pigment cartridge? What about a way of forcing colour documents to print from the pigment cartridge?
    4. If my smaller black dye cartridge (526BK) isn't being used up at the same rate as the other dye cartridges, is there a way of forcing the printer to use this instead of the pigment cartridge for B&W text documents, but NOT to mix in any of the colour cartridges at the same time?
    5. Does this procedure work for all other Canon printer models in addition to the MG6150, or just a limited range?
Many thanks for your patience in reading this -- I'm really trying to get the best out of my printer rather than give up and buy a different brand, and I'm sure others would appreciate a definitive answer to these questions as well.

I have at MG8100 and it seems that there is no solution to this. I have scoured the web for one and it seems that there is no way to print in black and white only. The grayscale option uses all the colours including black to print.
I have gone through a ton of colour ink just printing black and white documents. Its cost me a fortune and I've worked out that I can get it done cheaper by going to the print shop.
As far as I am concerned this unbelievable. A printer that doesn't give you the option to print using black ink only! And its not advertised or made known in any way. You have to buy the product and then find out later that it does not have a black and white print option. It seems there are a lot of people out there that are unhappy about this, and the "problem" seems to go quite far back. Why haven't Canon responded by adding this feature?! I wont say it here, but I think it must be obvious. Brings to mind the story of housecleaning product manufacturers that increase the size of the closures so that consumers will use more of the product, which is actually wasteful, so as to increase the purchase cycle.
This leaves a really bad taste in my mouth. I'm flogging mine now, and I am done with Canon for good!

    Hi ishmakov,
The PIXMA MP170 is not supported with Mac OSX v10.9, that is why you are experiencing this error.

  • My Mac stoped printing. I am on ox 10.9 and I have a HP Officejet 6700 premium

My Mac stoped printing. I am on ox 10.9 and I have a HP Officejet 6700 premium. I've reinstalled the drivers and tried several time . . . It just keeps telling me that the printer is busy.
I also have a PC hocked up to the network and it prints fine.
There is nothing wrong with my mac either because I have a dymo printer hocked up and it prints fine . . .
    What gives?

    Hi HappyHarpo,
Thanks for your post and welcome to the HP Forum.
At first step I suggest to restart your Mac and printer. If printer is in a network, also reboot the router first. Then try printing again.
If it still fails, I suggest to reset the printing system. Open Printers & Scanners and right-click the left side with the listed printer then choose Reset Printing System.
Then add the printer again, make sure next to "Use" the HP Printer/driver is selected correctly, and test printing.
    Best regards,

  • I have a mac computer and recently the printer says initialising and I cannot print or copy

I have a mac computer and recently the printer says initialising and I cannot print or copy.
The problem has become worse recently and now willonly print a couple of sheets before going to 'initialising'. I.ve moved the printer, changed sockets completed endlessly the directions from HP.
    Any ideas.

Sorry that you are having a problem with the printer initializing.
What type of printer do you have?
You may need to clean your print head. Sometimes when the print head is clogged or dirty, it will go into initializing because it is not reading the cartridges correctly.
Do you have a detachable print head? If so, you can take the print head out and manually clean with lint free cloth and water.

I have an HP deskjet color printer that only prints in black and white from my mac ... how do I get it to print in color

Check the printer itself.  Some printers you need to set the color & B&W settings on the printer itself instead of the Mac.   If that is not the case w/your printer, contact HP tech support and/or post in their forums if they have one.

  • I cannot find the 'WPA passphrase' to connect my printer via wireless and cannot find it in Airport utility (MAC says it cannot find any open airports)

    MAC OS X 10.6.3 - desktop Mac
I browsed similar questions and saw that someone recommended going to the Airport Utility and then selecting manual set up or something- anyways, it could not find any airports. I have brought my printer from my house as my BF's has died - this is the first time it's asked for a WPA passphrase. We tried a very long series of capital letters and numbers as well as the password for the internet and both times the printer said "invalid passphrase"..... ......

Airport Utility is for administration of genuine Apple Base Stations. If you have a different Brand, Airport Utility can do nothing for you.
    I think they're using ethernet.
To connect a Printer via Ethernet, no password is needed.
We already tried the password for the internet and that did not work...
If a password is required to connect to the Internet, then WiFi is likley being used, and that WiFi password is the one needed for the Printer connect wirelessly as well.
What make&model Printer? Is it indeed a Wireless Printer? Most connect via USB, but that would force it to use a specific computer to assist in printing.
