Macbook CPU?

Hi, I´m from Germany and I have found a different information about the macbook's cpu L2 Cache:
US-information:
http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=23F 75B72&tg_FC57F0D4=tab2&nclm=MacBookPro
Ger-information:
http://store.apple.com/Apple/WebObjects/germanstore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=B998EAC9&tg _FC57F0D4=tab2&nclm=MacBookPro
OK in the german store there is not a Macbook cpu with 4MB L2 cache...???

It appears to just be a typo in the German store tech specs. If you go to the macbook hardware page, it specs the macbook as having 2mb L2 cache for the 1.83 ghz and 4mb L2 cache for the 2.0 ghz, which is the same as the American store. Good catch though!

  • Macbook cpu problem extreme frequent slowdown and subs performance problems

    Hello
Since summer 2007 we have been experiencing speed problems with one of our Macs a Macbook bought in 2006. Initially we thought it was just because we were asking too much of the computer. But unfortunately this is not the case. What happens is that while working normally (normal performance) with one or more applications, the computer starts to slow down to a near halt. You notice this because instead of for example opening a new window right away it slowly unrolls the window until it is open. At the same time the fan starts to accelerate and often the little color wheel appears instead of the mouse arrow. The computer is warm but not hot. Usually after a while the speed of the computer comes back to normal and the fan will stop turning at high speed. When checking cpu usage during such an "episode" most of the time cpu usage by Safari or Firefox Activity monitor indicates cpu usage by Safari and Firefox 100-110 % which strikes me as not being right . Quitting these programs seems (seems !) to return the computer to normal faster. The Apple store has replaced the memory, no effect, I did a total clean install of OS, updated it to the latest version of Tiger no effect. What can be the problem ? Is it the logic board as a whole or the graphics portion ? Or is something blocking the vent and it does not cool sufficiently? We are at a loss what to do.
Any advise would be appreciated. Right now all I can think of is to bring the computer in to an Apple Care Center probably resulting in a high bill even though in retrospect this problem started before the expiry of the Apple warranty.
    Many thanks for any help.

    Hello thanks,
We use websites like Wall Street Journal online, viamichelin.fr, yahoo, NCBI. I may have given the wrong impression that it only happens with internet use, it also happens with iMovie or Nikon capture NX but I guess we just notice it more with internet use because this computer is mostly used for that plus e-mail.
    H van Es
I took a look at those sites. I noticed several ad/content displays on online.wsj.com which probably used Flash or Java animation/video. Yahoo! typically has tons of animation features (especially stuff like falling snow on holidays), and viamichelin.fr has a bunch of animated ads. NBCI looks to be the nastiest of the bunch.
If your fan is turning on from having multiple websites like those on, I'm not surprised.

  • Firefox causes surge on MacBook CPU

    hi:
this problem been going on for at least 3 months so it is cross version of Firefox as I've updated recently to 17.
after a while, I think it's 1.5-2hr if I've been surfing .. doing stuff on MacBook.. andcfirefox been open entire time
I hear the CPU do a surge and stay at it this higher CPU.
last night I worked out it was purely Firefox. I closed Firefox down and within 1-2min.. CPU was back to normal. no heavy sound of processing
my MacBook Pro is only 1 year old. so it's app issue not hardware.
last night I retested this three times
first time / only Firefox open
second time / Firefox and Opera
third time / Firefox / opera and mail
all three times when closed Firefox CPU went back to normal.
tonight I will turn off all addons to double check they are not cause. I think I've did that and still CPU usage surge. but will double check to be absolutely sure.
    Firefox I use extensively
    I have
1 one window with 15 tabs for stuff I'm researching and currently working on
each tab is simple site eg amazon book page
2 another window with my ACTION tabs. typically 4-5 open
    "so my question is"
1 what is suggested troubleshoot steps to work out which part of the Firefox solution is causing my CPU usage
2 what are common things to check with CPU surges?
    thankyou in advance

    many thanks
for quick glance - i have none of the "baddies"
will go thru article very methodically...
i notice the CPU goes up to 500 regularly.
today i ha activity monitor showing to see how often it surged
    5 times in 1 day

  • MacBook CPU Temperature

For the last several months my MacBook fan start to run as soon as I do anything processor intensive - including running a screensaver. As soon as I do something other than read mail or write in BBedit the fan revs up to 6000+ rpm. Looking at iState menu right now: Handbrake is the highest load, running using about 50% of the CPU. CPU temp is 99C, heatsink A 57C, heatsink B 56C, and the Enclosure base is 27C. The fan, as usual is running over 6000 rpm.
Is this normal? Could it be that thermal paste problem? Internet research has been more confusing than helpful.
Applecare is long expired - This is an early 2008 model.
    Thanks
    -Max

yep. and i bet, your fan isn't even spinning at its 6200 rpm maxmimum to accomplish this.
ok. as far as i understand it, different mabook series allow for different cpu temperatures and accordingly have a different fan behavior depending on which cpu is installed and which buliding materials are used in the book itself. so we can't directly compare your 2007 model to his 2008 or my 2009 model. but one thing pertains to all machines: if the fan spins at it's absolute maximum speed for a longer time period and temperatures do not drop noticeable, and if the fan never showed this behavior before, there's probably something wrong.
either the ventilation is blocked for some reason or the thermal paste is disintegrating. i would have checked it at the store. also, there is this wide gap between cpu temperature and heatsink temperature. for all i know, it's normally a difference up tof 15-20°, but not arround 40°.

  • My macbook cpu is always stay in a high temperature around 65 to 85 celcius degree

my macbook air 's cpu is always stay in a high temperature around 65 to 85 celcius degree. cpu fan 's rpm is 2000 to 3000 .
    Is it normal ?

that is within a safe tolerance.

  • New Macbook CPU Whine? Wasn't this MBP only?

I bought my updated macbook last week (Black, C2D 2.16 Ghz, 2GB Ram) and I noticed that the CPU whine that bothered me so much in my macbook pro is on my macbook as well!
The photobooth trick works.. but I wish this could just be eliminated once and for all..
Any suggestions? And does anyone else have it?

I have covered this topic extensively for close to 1 year now. I've come to a conclusion that all MacBooks exhibit this problem to some degree. I've had my Logic Board exchanged in hopes to get rid of the problem - but no way - its still here.
I've learned to deal with it in the following manner:
    1. I'm rarely in a completely quiet rooms - so in most cases I dont get bothered by the noise
    2. If I need to work in a quiet room - I use the Photobooth trick (force quit Photobooth - put comp to sleep - wake it up)
    3. I got Windows XP on bootcamp - I do most of my websurfing with the new Internet Explorer - and as most of you know - the CPU doesn't whine under Windows.
The fact that CPU whine is completly eliminated when using Windows Xp means that the whole problem could be solved with a simple patch from Apple. However - Apple will not release any such patch until more people complain directly to them.

  • MacBook CPU speed setting

I've been looking around on the web without much luck on how to configure my CPU speed on my macbook. I just switched from my old iBook G4, where I remember I could just go to the Energy Saver preference pane - go to options - and under all the checklist options (restart automatically...show battery status...etc etc) there's the option to set the speed to reduced, highest or automatic.
Now I go to the preference pane on my MacBook and I see that there's no option for this....?!
Where can I find this option?? There must be a way to lower the cpu speed especially with the core 2 duo chips!

It's set - no more adjustments.
    Scott
Over at the macosxhints forums someone said that changing the "optimization" drop down menu in the energy saver preference pane could be used to lower and max the cpu speed...that is, setting it to "normal", "better energy savings", and "better performance".
Is this true? Does anyone know if the actual cpu speed will change with the changing of this option?

  • My macbook CPU is very hot but mostly inactive

    Hi guys,
i have a problem with my Macbook rencently, for maybe 2 or 3 weeks.
The CPU is super hot, between 72℃ and 80℃, but the activity of the CPU is around 4% only.
    I already tried the following:
    - killing all running processes
    - reset the SMC
    - log in as Guest user
    But it didn't change anything.
The temperature of the room is cool, around 25-26℃.
My Macbook has the latest updates, and has plenty of ram (8gb).
Anyone had the same issue ?
Any ideas on how to fix it ?
    Thanks !

    From the Manual:
"Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
The System Management Controller (SMC) is a chip on the logic board that controls all power
functions. If the computer is experiencing any power issue, such as not starting up, not
displaying video, sleep issues, or fan noise issues, resetting SMC may resolve it. To reset SMC:
    1. If computer is on, turn it off by choosing Shut Down from the Apple () menu.
    2. Connect power adapter to computer and to a working power source.
    3. On built-in keyboard, press (left-side) Shift-Control-Option along with power button just
once.  Important: Use Shift-Control-Option keys on left side of keyboard.
Note: When the LED on the MagSafe connector is orange/amber, resetting the SMC will
change it to green for a few seconds, indicating that SMC was correctly reset.
    4. Wait 5 seconds and press power button to start computer.  Note: If bottom case is removed,
you can alternately reset SMC by disconnecting both power adapter and main battery, and
holding down power button for 5 seconds."
Just verifying you're doing the exact procedure.
The fan connector can be bad.
The SMC is easily damaged by static electricity.
So if the sensor is bad it means replacing the logic board.
    >wouldn't explain the battery drainage.<
It seems there was a recall of this model's battery, That site is gone however.
Hav you tried it with the battery disconnected? After a SMC reset?

  • Macbook CPU full load, 99 degrees celsius

On my late 2008 13" Macbook 2.4ghz when I run 2 instances of "yes > /dev/null" for 10 minutes to stress the CPU, the CPU temperature is at 99 degrees celsius even with the fans going at the maximum 6200 rpms and while using a cheap cooling pad. I took the computer to an Apple store "genius" and he thought this was normal. Is anyone else seeing temperatures like this using this stress test method? I looked at the website http://www.intelmactemp.com/ and highest full load temperature I see for this computer is 84 degrees celsius. I have noticed problems running intensive 3d games where the system slows down from high temperatures and more so under Windows XP.
This computer is 4 months out of warranty but until recently I never ran intensive programs and so never noticed the problem. What can I do about this, I feel Apple should be responsible for this.

    Hi MindBrain,
Saw your post last night but didn't have immediate access to 13" MacBook (Aluminum). So I've got a 2.4GHz unit with 4GB of RAM and ran two instances of the same command in Terminal.
All information is reported via iStat Pro:
CPU Temp before test - 76 (fans at 1998 RPM)
CPU Temp @ 5 minutes into test - 96 (fans at 2001 RPM)
CPU Temp @ 10 minutes into test - 97 (fans at 3100 RPM)
CPU Temp @ 15 minutes into test - 103 (fans at 5800 RPM)
CPU Temp @ 20 minutes into test - 106 (fans at 6200 RPM)
CPU Temp @ 25 minutes into test - 108 (fans at 6200 RPM)
For thoroughness, I also opted to run the test on a brand new 13" MacBook Pro, a 2 year old white MacBook 2.2GHz and another MacBook Aluminum. It's convenience I have when surrounded by 5600+ Macs across campus. All of the other machines also reported similar numbers, breaking the 100 degree threshold between 12-13 minutes into the test.
While I do not wish to discredit that URL, in all honesty I've probably had three times the number of entries on that website (611 as of this post) come across my desk in the past year for various reasons. So I really can't see that as being a valid resource to support an argument.
Not to mention it was your decision to not purchase AppleCare on your computer within the one year window, it was also your decision to not properly ensure adequate function of your machine prior to conclusion of the one year limited warranty. There was no responsibility on behalf of Apple to obligate you to stress test the machine 4 months after the one year warranty expired.
Lastly, is the sluggishness only in Windows XP or is it occurring on the Mac side as well?

  • Macbook CPU throttling under full load, average temperature.

I would like to know 2 things:
1)Why does my "2.0 Ghz" macbook refuse to go beyond 1.67Ghz under full load and 57C. It simply will not go above 1.67Ghz, ever.
    and
2)Where do I complain, send in feedback.
While I'm aware of certain benefits to lowering CPUclock to save battery power and avoid hardware failure at extreme ambient temperatures, I dont belive this is the case at hand. I paid for a 2Ghz laptop, not 1.67. I want my 2Ghz when I need it; under full load.

    Download CoreDuo Temp at http://macbricol.free.fr/coreduotemp/
I was able to solve my throttling issues by removing the AC power and the battery, and then holding down the power button for 10 seconds or so.
I had a discussion elsewhere on this throttling issue you can follow over here: http://episteme.arstechnica.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/8300945231/m/713004711831

I got the Macbook from my friend, they forgot the cpu model and the hd is out of order, how can I check the MacBook cpu type as I am afraid the HD compatibility problem if I buy the hd for replacement, thanks.

All MacBooks are Intel CPUs and all MacBooks use a SATA hard drive.
    For a hard drive try Newegg.com  http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=380&name=Laptop-Hard-Dr ives&Order=PRICE
    Or OWC  http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/2.5-Notebook/
Here are instructions on replacing the hard drive in a MacBook with a removable battery.  http://creativemac.digitalmedianet.com/articles/viewarticle.jsp?id=45088

  • Any point to disabling dock reflections on my Macbook 2009? Will I gain more performance or not really?

I know that for some odd reason when I shut the translucent bar off on my Macbook 2009 that for some odd reason my Macbooks cpu runs a lot cooler and when I play hd videos 720p vids that I don't hear my cpu fan starting up. The tranlucent bar was taking that much of my cpu or nvidia 9400m intergrated gpu performance up? I'm wondering if I can gain even more performance gain if I shut my dock reflections off. Would I gain even more performance or do you think that would be pointless to shut off the reflections on dock because it's probably not taking up too much performance? Also, I think the only way to shut reflections off in the dock would be through the terminal which is kind of odd that they don't give you a feature in system preferences to shut it off.

No change in peformance. Disabling is pointless.
For the reflection, you can make changes in System Preferences > Dock
    (No need for Terminal)
Select or deselect whichever you want:   Show indicator lights for open applications

  • What should my Macbook fan speed be? and battery help

My mac goes hot real easy and my battery goes down really quick. Ive tried doing what websites have told me to do (Eg. Turn down brighness) but not helping at all. HELP

There is a free to download App called iStat, which will run in dashboard.
This will enable you to see actual temperatures at key points in the Macbook (CPU etc). It will also tell you fan speeds etc (but take care interpreting such information. It's at best a 'relative' tool)
    Here is the link;

If you're still worried after you see real figures, post again with the temps etc.

  • Macbook Whining issues also is there similar QuietMBP for Vista?

Hi guys I'm just whining about (no pun intended) the macbook cpu whine noise on my newest generation Macbook 13" 2.0GHz.
First of all, I first bought a 13" Macbook back at the end of May, it had the whine so I called up Apple Store and had it swapped for a new one since it was less than a week old. But with this new macbook, the whine has developed and it has been over 30 days and I definitely won't be able to return it for a new one.. first of all can I ask how common is this issue, this is my second Macbook and I'd expect the whine to be acutally rare but looks like it happens on the majority of them?
Also do you guys recommend to get it repaired? What are the success rate of fixing the whine completely? My Macbook is still practically new and I'm worried the service-person might not be very careful with it and damage it comestically.
Lastly If I have to put up with the whine I don't mind using QuietMBP. However do you guys know similar program for Windows Vista? Since it whines on Vista too (due to CPU throttling I guess) as I use Windows often for various programs I use. Thanks in advance.

i would get a new one if it bothers you that much. my macbook does it very rarely, and very quietly. not noticable. get a new one. apple replaced my macbook 5 times...yea 5 lol

  • Re: MacBooks capable of addressing 3 GB or more of RAM

"This tip ready for consideration" in the MacBook black and white RAM forum.

Breaking it up for readability. How does this look?
MacBook serial numbers give an indication of whether or not your MacBook is capable of addressing more than 3 GB of RAM. Apple in November 1, 2007 upgraded the MacBook CPU to be able to address more than 3 GB of RAM when a second 2 GB module was inserted. Prior to that date, even if you had two 2 GB modules, it could only address 3 GB of RAM.
Serial numbers can be found under Apple menu -> About This Mac and clicking on the Mac OS X version number, or in the hardware section under Apple menu -> About This Mac -> More Info (also the System Profiler application).
The serial number contains the manufacture location code, an alphanumeric code of 2 characters (i.e. W8 is one of the common two character alphanumeric codes), followed by the last digit of the year (7 would be for 2007), followed by the week of the year. November 1 fell on the 44th week of that year.
W8745 or higher would be able to address 4 GB of RAM.
W8743 or earlier would only be able to address 3 GB of RAM.
