MacBook + Ethernet +360

Hi,
I'm sure the connection of Xbox 360 to Xbox Live via a macbook has come up loads before but I have been unable to find an answer to my specific query.
I have had my MacBook for a few months now but stil not overly technical with it. I'm quite happy doing the basics. I have used it before it allow a connection to the internet for the xbox using some info I found in another post.
However I found now that the Xbox will not even see the Mac when doing the Network Test. Normally during the test it says that the Network Adapter is Wired - obviously however it keep saying at the moment that it is disconnected.
I have tried the ethernet cable to a windows PC and it works ok but I have never managed to get the xbox online via internet sharing on a pc, so would still like to use the mac.
Have have run the Disk Utility to repair permissions as advised in another post and I have run Terminal, entered "ifconfig en0" and got the following results:
Phill-Young:~ phillyoung$ ipconfig en0
usage: ipconfig <command> <args>
where <command> is one of waitall, getifaddr, ifcount, getoption, getpacket, set, setverbose
Phill-Young:~ phillyoung$ ifconfig en0
en0: flags=8822<BROADCAST,SMART,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> mtu 1500
ether 00:19:e3:38:e8:70
media: autoselect (none) status: inactive
supported media: autoselect 10baseT/UTP <half-duplex> 10baseT/UTP <full-duplex> 10baseT/UTP <full-duplex,hw-loopback> 10baseT/UTP <full-duplex,flow-control> 100baseTX <half-duplex> 100baseTX <full-duplex> 100baseTX <full-duplex,hw-loopback> 100baseTX <full-duplex,flow-control> 1000baseT <full-duplex> 1000baseT <full-duplex,hw-loopback> 1000baseT <full-duplex,flow-control> none
Phill-Young:~ phillyoung$
Why has the Ethernet port become inactive?? How do I activate it again??
In System Pref > Network > Show > Network Status >
Built In Ethernet is not plugged in
In System Pref > Network > Show > Network Port Configurations
Built In Ethernet is ticked and (Apple default) blue colouring
Can anyone help me activae the port again or is it likely to be a problem with the actual hardware??
Thanks in advance.

ok, well there could be a number of issues, first off, what type of router do you use? is it an airport?
Ok, well, what you have to do is manually set the IP, so after the "ifconfig en0" input in your terminal window it will show your computers IP address. what you must do is add one digit to that address and set the xbox's ip to that.
One common mistake as well is that you must set the gateway address to your mac, because it in a sense is acting as the router since it is forwarding and receiving the data for your xbox, so set the gateway address to that
For example, my ifconfig en0 is:
en0: flags=8863<UP,BROADCAST,SMART,RUNNING,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> mtu 1500
inet 192.168.2.1 netmask 0xffffff00 broadcast 192.168.2.255
ether 00:16:cb:cc:80:aa
media: autoselect status: inactive
supported media: autoselect 10baseT/UTP <half-duplex> 10baseT/UTP <full
so, i set the xbox's ip to 192.168.2.2, and the gateway to 192.168.2.1
I hope that helps a bit, if not reply

I am trying to configure (due to WEP code on my wireless network) Cisco bridge WET200 for use in my home theater. To configure, I connected to ethernet port of macbook OS 10.6.8. Entered IP address 192.168.1.226 for config utility but it times out. Cisco says I need either IE or firefox. Downloaded firefox but still fails. Has anyone had experience with this?

Found that if I clean up DNS for my domain with PTR and A then everything started working properly after a rebuild.

  • MacBook Ethernet Connectivity Problem

    Hi everyone:
Just until two weeks ago I was able to plug the ethernet cable into my MacBook in a conference room where I work. Since then it has not worked; the MacBook does not recognise that the cable is plugged in.
An IBM ThinkPad has no problems connecting to the same ethernet cable.-
When I take the cable and plug it directly into the Linksys 48 Port Gigabit Switch that is two floors below the conference room I have no problem. It seems that somehow the distance from the switch makes a difference to the MacBook, even though there was no problem just two weeks ago.
Does anyone know how to resolve this issue? Is it related to a recent update?
Thank you very much for your help.

system updates and installation of software as admin can do bad things to network configurations at time.
Try deleting all the ethernet interfaces specified in System Preferences/Network/ left panel and creating a new one (be sure to make a note of the correct ethernet configuration).
Also, delete Network "Locations" you are not using (again in System Preferences/Network).
Also, you can run this from the command line to get an idea of what configuration is active and network state you have:
    ifconfig

  • Macbook Ethernet connectivity

    Hi There,
My Macbook at my new office via ethernet can see the DHCP address and all; however, I cannot connect to use the internet. The local intel adminstrators do not know anything MAC
PS: I have gone into system preferences for network and have looked up the settings and cannot see what the problem is.
    - can someone help me please.

  • Macbook ethernet problem

A few days ago my ethernet socket started misbehaving. After plugging in the cable, if I pushed the plug gently to the right of the socket it worked fine, but release the pressure and it stopped working. Looking at the Network preferences, it's clear - push to the right and a green light appears against Ethernet, release and the green light goes grey. Now it's stopped working completely.
So it seems like a hardware problem, or at least some physical problem with the socket. But I don't understand what could have caused it. It's been working fine for 4 months, I haven't dropped it and there's no physical damage. The socket looks fine, the pins are straight, the 4 metal bits in the socket are in place (2 at the top, 2 at the sides) and the cable locks in place OK. I've tried different cables and connecting to different sockets as well. The only thing I've been doing is plugging and unplugging the cable every day.
Any suggestions, or do I have to take it to an Apple Store for repair?
    Thanks

I would suggest taking it in for repair. Hopefully you're still under warranty. The constant plugging and unplugging could have caused something to happen to the socket.

  • Hard Wire Xbox 360 to MacBook

My Macbook is connected to my home wireless network via integrated Airport Extreme. Is it possible to transfer that connection to my Xbox 360 by connecting an ethernet cable? If so, what settings should I have to ensure it works? Any help is much appreciated! Cheers:D

Hello benstelmach. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
To setup for Internet Sharing (Wireless to Wired):
    Setup the Network
Cable Modem > (Ethernet cable) > \[WAN port] Wireless Router (wireless) > MacBook \[Ethernet port] > (Ethernet) > Xbox 360
    Enable Software Firewall (MacBook)
System Preferences > Security > Firewall
o Block all incoming connections (enabled)
    Enable Internet Sharing (MacBook)
    System Preferences > Sharing
o Select "Internet Sharing" from the options in the left column
o Share your connection from: AirPort
o To computers using: Built-in Ethernet (checked) (Note: Uncheck all other entries in the list.)
    o Select "Internet Sharing" again
o Click "Start" to start Internet Sharing
    o Click Start
Note: When using Internet Sharing, your MacBook is essentially a "software" router. However, this router is very limited. You may or not get the results you are looking for when connecting to Xbox Live for online gameplay.

  • By-passing Airport to print through Ethernet

I loaded Snow Leopard yesterday and could not find my HP Color LaserJet 5500dn, which is connected via Ethernet. Then I discovered it wouldn't recognized or communicate with it while I had Airport on. After turning Airport off, low and behold it recognized it.
How can I by-pass the Airport connection and go straight to Ethernet when using this printer, without having to disable Airport when I need to use it? And by the way, I use Retrospect to back up a system of Macs through my server, and for that to read each computer, I have to make sure Airport is disabled then, too. Any suggestions?

If your PS2 has network ability, you should get a standard straight-through ethernet cable. Then connect that cable to your router->PS2.
Follow the manual to configure PS2. You're on.
If your router is too far away, then look up "Internet Connection Sharing" and you will find hundreds of posts with people who are trying to "...+have my internet go to my {other computer} through my macbook ethernet port+..."
Your router should have a manual, on CD, or online.
Your PS2 should have manual for network (CD or paper, or online)

  • Ethernet en0 does not exist

    Hi,
I got a new mac book last week. It was able to connect via ethernet and suddendly the ethernet did not work anymore.
I'm writing this with my pc laptop, using the same cable modem, so it's not a cable/modem issue.
I checked all system preferences/network preferences and so on but it does not help.
In network port configurations, my ethernet is greyed out. I cannot make it active and I cannot create new ethernet port.
When I go to the terminal and run a ifconfig en0, I have "en0 does not exist" where as system profiler defines en0 as the built-in ethernet. (no mac address is shown though).
I used the apple hardware test at boot-up. Macaddress of the ethernet is 00:00:00:00:00. Is this normal ?
Any one have any idea ? Is my built-in ethernet broken ? Is it software issue or hardware ?
    thanks,
    Lionel

    Things to try:
    1. Go to Applications / Utilities / Disk Utility and do a Fix permissions. This often cures strange errors.
    2. Go to the Control Panel and add a new user. Log in as the new user and try to connect. This may not help, but when I was having trouble with wireless, Apple tech support sugested it. (Didn't help me.)
    3. It is a pain in the neck, but try doing an arhcive reinstall of OSX.
    4. If you look in the Discussions for Macbook Ethernet port, you'll probably find some articles about blown ports. It sounds like the Macbook Ethernet port may be easier to fry than typical, or there may have been a bad batch of Macbooks.
    5. If the Macbook is new, it is worth a shot calling Applecare. It would be cost free other than the time required. One would hope they'd be aware of any common problems with en0.
    6. If you are within a reasonable distance of an Apple retail store, take your machine in and let the Genius Bar take a look.
    Best wishes resolving the problem.

  • Which ethernet cable to use?

I want to run a single cable from the Airport Extreme in the house to the garage and plug it directly into my laptop in the garage, without having a separate hub in the garage. I have several questions?
Cat-5e or Cat-6? Do they both use the same connectors? Do they both plug directly into an Airport Extreme and a MacBook?
Would a cable that runs directly from an Airport Extreme into a MacBook ethernet port be the same type of cable that runs between, say, an Airport Extreme and an Airport Express or other router? Is one of those a "cross-over" cable and one a "patch" cable? Which is which?
How do I know whether a cable is rated for burial directly in dirt or running overhead outside? How do I identify such a cable?

Cat-5e or Cat-6? Do they both use the same connectors? Do they both plug directly into an Airport Extreme and a MacBook?
You could use either cable type. I would suggest using CAT-6 for future growth. Both use the same connectors ... and either would plug directly between the Extreme & the MacBook.

Most modern networking equipment have the ability to "sense" the type of cable attached to it so it really doesn't matter which type (straight-thru or crossover) you use; however, I would just go with straight-thru in this case.
How do I know whether a cable is rated for burial directly in dirt or running overhead outside? How do I identify such a cable?

  • I seem to be having ethernet connectivity problems on my thunderbolt Macs - can anyone help?

Today (fateful coincidence?) BOTH my Thunderbolt Macs (27" i7i iMac and 13" MacBook Pro) report No connection to internet in Safari - using Network Diagnostics shows Ethernet/Internet to be working fine, but Safari error continues (onscreen message has strange formatting - each line of the message is repeated three times). This problem looks identical to an earlier problem which was fixed by an early Thunderbolt Display firmware update. Swapping ethernet on my Macbook Pro from Display Ethernet to MacBook Ethernet results in same problem. Meanwhile Email continues to work fine! Any insights/hints/lifelines greatfully received ...

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. First, disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard, mouse, and monitor, if applicable, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including your login items.
Launch the application(s) and test. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)

  • Burnt ethernet

I have a very bad feeling about this. My MacBook (22 mos old) started making that awful phenolic "burning electrical equipment" smell, especially on the left (ports) side. That was alarming enough, but now I don't seem to have ethernet anymore.
Any ideas? Any hope at all of getting help from Apple even though the warranty has passed?
System profiler doesn't see anything wrong and I can't tell anything is amiss, except that there is no response when an ethernet cable is plugged in. Thankfully, airport is working fine.
It gets worse: Some reading here in the forums tells me that dying MacBook ethernet is not unusual, although I couldn't find anything about the awful smell. The ethernet is on the motherboard, so a repair is a big deal. Basically, you either pay big bucks, give up wired ethernet forever, or limp along trying to use a USB-ethernet adapter.
Please tell me if you have a good idea. At this point I'd be happy to even make an accurate diagnosis.

I just wanted to follow-up and take any blame for this off Apple in my case. I've since learned that a powered "ethernet" connection was placed in the conference room to support a VOIP conference phone. It was unmarked and still carried the "data" stamp, even though it's now hot. Plugging into this fried my ethernet in short order, and that's not surprising. Needless to say, it's now marked.
I've just ordered the $29 Apple USB-ethernet adaptor supposedly for the Macbook Air. I believe it will work on any MacBook at 10.5.2 or higher. Hope so.
According to repair shop, the repairs would cost ~$750 for in-shop (overnight) replacement of the logic board or ~$350 by shipping it out for a week. The latter option could possibly repair anything and everything else they find wrong for the one price. I'm wondering if my yellowed wrist-rest and fading battery might be included? Wouldn't be so bad a deal for a one-stop refresh.

  • Ethernet is unavailable, according to an network preferences pane.

I have been trying to connect my iMac to a NETGEAR wireless router by ethernet. I have used the internet connection wizard in OS 9.2.2 to configure the settings, but when I launch a pane describing the connection settings, a message comes up saying ethernet is not available. I have attempted to check to see if Apple Talk is trying to use it, but couldn't open Apple Talk.
The light on the router lights up as green (indicating 100 Mbps connection active) but the iMac won't connect. I can't recall whether the iMac shows up when I view the router settings via my Macbook, but I will post more details soon, after attempting again.
The strange thing is, that many months ago my mum and I took it to the Apple Store in Bluewater, where I believe it connected to their network quite happily, using ethernet of course. I believe there is no problem with the cable or the router, as they both function fine with my Macbook, and my mum's.
We need the iMac for OS 9 applications, and I wish to upgrade it to OS X 10.3, but wanted to check that the firmware is sufficiently updated first.

There are situations where an older Mac needs to use a crossover Ethernet cable. A normal router to computer connection should not, but I don't know your exact setup.
I believe there is no problem with the cable or the router, as they both function fine with my Macbook
More recent Macs switch their Ethernet port automatically.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2274
As a test of the old iMac's Ethernet port, you can connect it directly to the MacBooks Ethernet port with a normal Ethernet cable. Turn ON file sharing on the MacBook (in System Preferences Sharing pane) and try to connect from the iMac to the MacBook. For Mac OS 9, use Network Browser under the Apple menu, and enter the MacBook's specific IP address.

  • Happy 500GB Time Capsule Owner

There are definitely enough posts bashing the Time Capsule so I figured I would make one with a positive spin to it based on my experiences.
My network is rather simple but here is a diagram to help paint a picture.
During setup I used firmware 7.3. As of today I am using 7.3.1.
Cable Modem > TC > Wireless G > Vista Laptop
    Wireless N > Macbook
    Ethernet > Xbox 360
First lets get the bad stuff out of the way. Setting up the TC was quick but with minor problems.
    1) Transfer speed via ethernet or wireless was horrible for the small amount of data I was trying to back up(30GB). I left my macbook on overnight and racked up about 15+ hours of transfer time. I have heard of some people with larger amounts of data taking literally days to do their initial backups.
    2) I could not connect wirelessly to my Xbox 360 using the official Microsoft wireless adaptor. This was all under firmware 7.3. Now that 7.3.1 is out im curious to see if any progress has been made. (I'll edit that in later tonight when I get home)
    3) With the standard 2.4GHz G/N - Automatic Channel wireless setup I would lose signal anytime I clicked on the airport icon on the top bar of OSX. Very odd... so I went into the TC via manual setup and changed the channel to a higher number since there were multiple 2.4Ghz signals near my home. I also turned on the "robustness" feature found via the options button in the wireless tab.
    4) HEAT! The TC runs pretty warm during regular use(no active backups) and hot when performing a backup. It makes me nervous but then again I have never had a hard drive fail on me and I had plenty in some cramped/warm places. Apple says the HDD's are server grade so I guess I will have to trust their word on that.
    5) Still having problems linking my HP PSC printer to my windows laptop. Works fine on my Macbook but although Windows can see the printer it is not connecting to it. Once I get some time I will sit down and hammer that problem out.
Yikes lots of bad stuff huh! Well the way I look at it is that I have never bought an electronic device and had it work flawlessly. Maybe I have bad luck or maybe its because I have exclusively used the Windows operating system since Windows 3.1. Har har. Most importantly this device is new to the market and buying something like this is unfortunately a risky situation. You pay for a item and expect it to work like a charm but the reality is a bit different.
With a little tweaking and some patience the TC is working like it should now. I wiped the HDD after 7.3.1 firmware update and the initial backup went much faster. I have had to use ethernet to get my xbox online instead of wireless but I am a patient person so its not a big deal right now. I expect future firmware updates to fix any existing problems and there do not seem to be any major issues I can not live with.
Overall I am happy with my purchase. I love having a very simple backup solution for my home network. If I had very crucial data I would get a drobo.

Hello. Good to hear everything went well for you. I'm contemplating a purchase of a TC when I get my MBP in a couple of weeks. Our setup is similar, the TC will provide wired connection for my xbox360 (refuse to go wireless because I think it'll make the lag worse).
From all the horror stories in the other discussions, I'm a little apprehensive but well, I have a few days to camp here to look out for some happy endings like yours.
    Take care.

  • Disk space used much larger than actual files

I noticed this morning that Terminal was giving a warning about running out of swap space, which I thought was odd, as /var/vm was only at around ~10GB, but later when I tried to install some updates, I noticed that it said I only had 1.8MB free on my hard drive. I ran a df -h and it showed %iused at 100%. I immediately deleted some logs to free up a few megabytes of space and started hunting for what could have been hogging all my disk space, I seem to remember having 60GB free last time I checked. I was deleting a few small files, when I noticed this
    bash-4.2# du -h -d 1
    6.2M          ./.DocumentRevisions-V100
    584K          ./.fseventsd
    583M          ./.Spotlight-V100
      0B          ./.Trashes
    31G          ./Applications
    2.1M          ./bin
    20K          ./cache
    3.8G          ./data
    5.0K          ./dev
    34M          ./Developer
    1.3M          ./EFI
    1.0K          ./home
    8.9G          ./Library
    1.0K          ./net
      0B          ./Network
    185M          ./opt
    12G          ./private
    1.5M          ./sbin
      0B          ./Shared Items
    4.1G          ./System
    52G          ./Users
    4.9G          ./usr
    4.0K          ./Volumes
    117G
So apparently, according to du, I am only using 117GB of my hard drive. I immediately ran this
    bash-4.2# df -h
Filesystem      Size   Used  Avail Capacity  iused   ifree %iused  Mounted on
    /dev/disk1     297Gi  283Gi   14Gi    96% 74220526 3630455   95%   /
    devfs          200Ki  200Ki    0Bi   100%      692       0  100%   /dev
    map -hosts       0Bi    0Bi    0Bi   100%        0       0  100%   /net
    map auto_home    0Bi    0Bi    0Bi   100%        0       0  100%   /home
So my question is how is it that all of my files combined are using 117GB, including swap, but according to df, Disk Utility and Finder I am using 283GB? I am using FileVault 2, if that helps

The 300GB partition is the partition I am booting off of, and the one I was writing about. Disk0s1 is the EFI partition, 210MB. The other Internal hard drive is the core storage physical volume, already mounted, mounted in the image. Recovery HD is the 650MB system recovery partition.
I rebooted to the recovery partition and used Disk Utility to verify the volume, it said everything checked out alright.
In disk utility, the top entry has this data
Name :     Internal Hard Drive     Capacity :     319.21 GB (319,213,174,784 Bytes)
Type :     Logical Volume Group     Available :     16.8 MB (16,777,216 Bytes)
Disk Status :     Online     Used :     319.2 GB (319,196,397,568 Bytes)
However the other entry, right below it has this
         Mount Point :     /     Capacity :     318.88 GB (318,877,626,368 Bytes)
Format :     Encrypted Logical Partition     Available :     202.18 GB (202,175,160,320 Bytes)
Owners Enabled :     Yes     Used :     116.7 GB (116,702,466,048 Bytes)
Number of Folders :     241,519     Number of Files :     1,246,454
So I guess the reboot fixed my problem, df -h now shows 37% used, but the logical vomume group still shows only 16MB free. Anyways, things seem to be working now.
