MacBook / Leopard license question .

My Windows laptop has recently failed and I am considering replacing it with a MacBook .
If I buy a MacBook in a few weeks/months with Leopard installed on it , can I install that copy of Leopard on my Mac Mini ? Would I / Could I be able to upgrade the license of the copy of Leopard included with the MacBook to a 'Family' version ? Or will I have to buy a stand alone ( upgrade ? ) copy of Leopard for the MacMini alone .
Should I buy a MacBook now , and then buy one upgrade copy of Leopard , with a 'Family' license and upgrade both , will this be a cheaper option ?
If anybody can help me decide what the best solution is , I'd be really grateful .

The original poster was just asking if they can install their copy of Leopard that comes with their MacBook (if they wait until Leopard comes out) on their mini... There's no reason to assume everyone is familiar with product licensing. The fact that they asked... and followed up asking about getting a family license would seem to indicate they want to do the right thing.
If you decide to wait for Leopard to purchase your MacBook, you are not authorized to install the copy of Leopard supplied with the MacBook on your Mini.
It's not clear exactly when Leopard will be released. If you are looking to purchase a MacBook soon, you can always purchase the family version of Leopard when it is released.
So far as the cheapest way to get Leopard on both your Mini and your MacBook... As Apple will likely charge the same for Leopard as the current price for Tiger (although they have not announced pricing), that would be $129 for a single user license and $199 for up to a license for up to 5 users (which is an insanely good deal when compared to Windows licensing). The cheapest thing to do would be to wait until Leopard is released so it would come preinstalled on the MacBook and you could buy a single user copy for $129 for your Mini. I've never had an issue with the pricing for OS X. It pains me to have to buy a copy of Windows... their pricing has always been outrageous and has gotten more so with Vista.

  • MacBook Black: Selling - Leopard license question

    Greetings,
I'm interested in selling my MacBook Black. The only lingering question I'd like some advise on is what exactly to do with the Leopard license that will come with my new MacBook... I'll explain.
My current MacBook Black came with 10.4.x, and when Leopard came out I purchased a family pack (5 seats) to install on my Mac Pro (quad core) and MacBook Black. Now that I'm looking to sell the MacBook Black I'd like to ship it with Leopard installed... here's what I thought about doing.
While holding on to the MacBook Black, purchase a new MacBook. Wipe the new MacBook and do a clean install from my family pack. Transfer files from the MacBook Black to the new MacBook, verify everything is happy, make a backup of my new MacBook. Wipe my old MacBook Black and do a clean install of the Leopard license that came with my new MacBook, and ship this original disk along with all related contents to the purchaser.
My only concern is that if the family pack of Leopard keeps track of installs... would this read 3/5 installations when at this point it should only be 2/5? Also I'm not 100% certain if it matters using an older Leopard install disk on the new machine and the newer Leopard install disk on the old machine.
I'm all about doing this in a professional manner, and initially it doesn't seem like I'd need to purchase yet another Leopard license for the purchaser because one already comes with my new MacBook.
Any advise would be much appreciated

That's correct. You cannot install your copy of Leopard from the new computer onto the one your will sell. That violates the license agreement. Your Family Pak does not extend to the original discs that come with the new computer. If you were to install Leopard in that way then you would be legally obliged to provide the original discs from your new computer to the person who buys the old one. You do not want to do that for two reasons: 1) the discs contain your pre-bundled software, Windows Boot Camp drivers installer, and the Apple Hardware Test suite; 2) they are OEM discs and will only work on your new computer.
True, the computer will not have Leopard installed on it. If the new owner wants Leopard, then they can purchase their own legal copy or you can purchase a single-license copy of Leopard to provide with the computer when you sell it.
    Legally these are your alternatives.

  • Leopard License Question

When Leopard first shipped, I had a MacBook Pro and an iMac, both with Tiger installed. I purchased the Leopard Family Pack DVD and upgraded both computers to Leopard.
Since then, I've purchased a new iMac and new MacBook, both with Leopard pre-installed. I REMOVED Leopard from the two older machines and re-installed Tiger before selling them, so currently there are no Apple computers out there with my license being used.
Now that I have two copies of Leopard for my two computers (that came with them), can I legally sell the Leopard Family Pack that I don't need anymore?

Yes, if you don't keep any copies or installations of it, including backups.

  • Mac OS X licensing question

    Hi All,
    Hope you guys can help.
I currently have 2 Mac OS X machines. One on Tiger and the other Snow Leopard. The hard-drive of the Mac with Snow Leopard crashed. It was sent in for repairs, the hard-drive was replaced and Mountain Lion installed on the new hard-drive. My question is, does this mean I have a spare Snow Leopard license?
My thinking is, if the original hard-drive did not crash and SL was upgraded to Mountain Lion then I would not have an extra SL license. But with a fresh install I still have the original SL license available to install on my Tiger machine. Is this so?
    I'd appreciate your comments.
    thanks

The people who put Mountain Lion on your Mac shouldn't have. If you ever have to reinstall the OS, you will not be able to.
They likely installed it from a USB drive they made to install ML from. You, however, would need an Apple ID and password of an App Store account where ML had already been purchased in order to reinstall the OS.
Personally, I would erase the drive and reinstall Snow Leopard. If you really want Mountain Lion, you should purchase your own legal copy. If the event you need to reinstall ML, you will be able to.
If you prefer, once Snow Leopard is back on the drive, you could skip straight to Mavericks, which is free. You do still need an App Store account to "purchase" Mavericks, download and install it.

  • Want to take reinitialize MacBook (Leopard) from departed employee

Have a former employee's Macbook (Leopard) and want to repurpose but it still has her password protecting the machine. I'm happy to reinitialize the entire hard drive and have a retail Snow Leopard disk but not the initial start-up disks that came with her computer. Is there an easy way to do this or do I need to go to the Genius Bar. BTW - I'm the CFO of the company and the purchaser of all our computers.

You can reset a password using any install disk. Just boot to the installer and when you can select the Utilities menu, you will see an option to change the password.
The Snow Leopard disks will allow you to erase and install, also. Just run Disk Utility from the Utilities menu when you can get to it.
If you don't have the original disks, you can get replacements from Apple (Call AppleCare) for a small fee. If you ever intend to sell the computer, part of the Software License Agreement is to pass along all software that came with the computer. If not, and you have the disks from identical machines, they will work to restore it to original condition.

Association of Associated Devices is subject to the following terms:
"You may auto-download Eligible Content or download previously-purchased Eligible Content from an Account on up to 10 Associated Devices, provided no more than 5 are iTunes-authorized computers."
That information is available here >   iTUNES STORE - MAC APP STORE - TERMS AND CONDITIONS

  • I am using a macbook leopard why can't i bring songs from my playlist to my ipod i get an error message saying ipod can't be synced disk not found this just started happening

i am using a macBook Leopard and suddenly I can no longer ring my songs from my playlists to my ipods. I keep getting the message Ipod can't by syncd disk cannot be found. this has never happened before and I have 4 ipods that cannot be upedated or changed.

This happens with ALL of your iPods?  So, it's probably not a problem on the iPod side of the connection.
If you have not recently (at least since this problem occurred), be sure to restart your Mac.  At the same time, you can also Reset your iPod
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1320
A Reset just restarts the iPod (it is not a Restore).  Then try it again.
If that does not help, select the iPod in the iTunes sidebar, under DEVICES.  Over to the right, on the Summary tab, if Enable Disk Mode is currently NOT checked, see if checking it and clicking Apply makes any difference.  This is more of a test.  If that setting makes a difference, it may provide a clue for the actual cause.

  • Fix for BT headset nightmare in VMWare Fusion? (Macbook Leopard)

Appreciate any help after struggling for over a day trying to connect a top Bluetooth headset (Jawbone)...
    Thanks,
    Mark
    Openworld.com
    CASE:
    2 GB Ram Macbook
    Leopard OS
Fusion 1.0 running WinXP Service Pack 2
    Jawbone Bluetooth Headset
Bluetooth headset works for sound input/output when paired and turned on -- in Leopard OS (only)
Bluetooth Enabler installer for Windows successfully installed (as prompted by VMWare) from the Leopard CD drivers folder
VMWare's Sound, USB Bluetooth menu items in Fusion confirm association with Leopard
VMWare window Bluetooth icon (at bottom) shows Bluetooth link to Leopard remains OK
    PROBLEM
Bluetooth control panel (in Mac OS) disappears for the entire time that WinXP is launched in Fusion
In WinXP, sound input/output to Jawbone headset does not work, even though the sharing icon for Bluetooth at bottom of VMWare Fusion window remains active (showing blue rather than black)
On exiting WinXP, the missing Bluetooth control panel in Leopard system preference reappears -- but a working link in Leopard with Jawbone headset can only be restored after a Macbook retstart
FIXES TRIED WITH APPLECARE (all unsuccessful)
Removing Library preferences (main and user-specific) for bluetooth and restarting
    Zapping the PRAM
Creating a new user with Admin privileges, and creating a new linke
    Removing the battery
    NEXT STEPS
Please suggest any troubleshooting ideas ... Applecare tech support reps' concluded (after 3+ hours on two calls) that this may be a a VMWare Fusion 1.0 bug

This is no Mac, Leopard or Headset issue - I experience the same on a MacMini DualCore, OS 10.4.11, VMWare Fusion 1.0 and Win2K.

Hi, does your MacBook have Firewire, or just USB?
FW is far faster if you have that.
    Avoid Bus powered ones.

  • Lumira Server for BI Platform and Team/Edge consumption & licensing question

Hi.  I have a few questions.
    Question 1:
From my reading, I've heard that Lumira Edge/Team server may not be a part of BI-Suite License.  I read a Lumira Server ASUG Webcast recap by Tammy Powlas here (SAP Lumira Server for Teams Roadmap ASUG Webcast) over the weekend and one of the Q&A questions struck me:
Q: Is this included with the BI Suite license from SAP?
A: Lumira Server for Teams (Edge Edition) is not covered under BI Suite License. However, Lumira Server for BI Platform (RTC Planned in April) is covered under BI Suite licenses
In a separate conversation late 2014, I thought I'd heard that Lumira Team/Edge server was supposed to be usable by BI Suite licensed customers, but it sounds like I'm mistaken?
    Question 2:
Next, the second part of the statement gave me hope:
However, Lumira Server for BI Platform (RTC Planned in April) is covered under BI Suite licenses
I then looked at the Lumira Deployment Options for Departments Part 1 – ASUG Webcast by Tammy Powlas to get some more information on Lumira Server for BI Platform.  This slide gave me some hope (emphasis mine in green):
But then I see some more information a little later:
Is this slide to imply that the version without HANA (or HANA XS) for BI Platform will only really just serve as a user rights management and Lumira document repository?  And that if I want to view a Lumira document, I must still open from the Lumira Desktop client?
It was suggested I start a new discussion thread to ask this licensing question about a product that's not out yet (but the slide says it's GA so I'm still confused) so here I am with my discussion thread!
Hopefully someone can make me less confused.  I'm hoping the answer is as a BI-Suite customer that we do not have to make a decision to either invest in new Edge/Team licenses or buy HANA XS hardware to establish a beachhead of Lumira usage in our organization.  We've been struggling with promoting Lumira and the sharing piece has been the sore spot.

    Hi Michael
You are right, it is confusing...
I think it will be better to contact sales to get this explained as opposed to technical support people that monitor this SCN Space.

  • Instant Client SQL*Plus License Question

Can anyone shed some light on a license question for me? (I know that most license questions are for Oracle Sales to handle, but this involves a supposedly free product.)
I want to use SQL*Plus with the Instant Client in a production environment, but I am not sure whether I am entitled to. Does Instant Client "support" SQL*Plus only in the sense that if I already own a license for SQL*Plus I can use it with the Instant Client, or is the Instant Client SQL*Plus package also truly free to deploy and use?
The download page has links to download a basic Instant Client, plus several optional packages, one of which is SQL*Plus. However, the FAQ does not tell me whether the optional packages (specifically SQL*Plus) is also free to deploy and use in a production environment, and I could not find any other helpful document.
The FAQ says that "Instant Client is FREE for anyone to use in a development or production environment." It also says immediately following that "Instant Client can be used to run your OCI, OCCI, Pro*C, JDBC, and ODBC applications without installing a full Oracle Client. In addition, Instant Client supports SQL*Plus." [emphasis mine]
I would appreciate any help on this.
    Thanks in advance,
    Anthony

Why don't you call Oracle sales? I guess they'll be happy to answer your question.

  • Mybook Studio Edition external drive shows in macbook leopard but not imac

I have a Mybook Studio Edition external drive that I am using to store files and as a backup for my macbook leopard using time machine. I wanted to add files from my imac tiger but it does not show up in disk utility and the system profiler says unrecognized drive. I don't remember formatting it - it was just plug and play out of the box. Does this mean it is formatted for Leopard and won't work on tiger?
Is there something that time machine does that it will only be recognized by macbook?
    The imac is:
    2.4 ghz
    3gb ram
    300gb drive
    10.4.11
    the macbook is
    2.4ghz
    4gb ram
    300gb drive
    10.5.6

    Hello,
On the iMac ... Try repairing disk permissions. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select FirstAid, then click: Repair Disk Permissions. Quit DU when it's finished and reboot.

  • CS5 Student License Question

    Licensing question:
In 2011, I purchased a student license to CS5 for my mac.  I have installed it on one laptop that I am the primary user of.  The laptop has two user logins, mine and my husbands.
Can my husband use CS5 on the computer on an occassional basis (either through my username or his) and still be okay from a licensing point of view?  There are several questions that hint at this, but I can't find a clear answer.  I've read the EULA, but I'm still confused whether this is permissable or not.
    Thanks for any help.

That's into the area of legal interpretation, but you don't need to overthink it. You may have purchased the license, but technically the activation is per computer, is it not? So one could simply assume that this is perfectly intended or at least within the freedom that the EULA provides... It's not like you're letting your neighbors use it for a buck an hour, or is it?

  • BO XIR2 Licensing Question

Was hoping if someone could help me out with a licensing question I have. I am trying to understand how BO licensing works.
I think it would be easier if I asked the question through an example.
The scenario is a situation where we have a standard BO XIR2 enterprise installation with an app server, db server and web server.
    1. The app server is a normal BO XIR2 installation
    2. The web server is also as from a BO XIR2 installation.
    3. The db server runs the data store and audit module is on in the db.
    4. The following report types are to be used by the end user
        4a. Crystal Reports
4b. Web Intelligent reports (View, drill down etc)
4c. Desktop Intelligence report (View, drill down etc)
    5. The development box is the same setup in which the 10 developers should have access to have access to these build the universes, crystal, webi and deski reports.
    6. The prod environment will be used by 50 users who should be able to access webi crystal and deski reports.
    7. These users should also be able to create custom webi reports
Since the licensing for BO is a bit different, can someone please help understand all the different types of licenses required for this setup?

BO licensing is pretty straight forward, but you should speak to a sales rep for particulars. Generally from the server we have 3 types CPU (in which case everything you stated would be supported), Named Users (in which case you would need 1 per user logging in) and concurrent users (which would require enough licenses to support the maximum of concurrently logged on users).
The slow response is likely due to the US thanksgiving holiday, I'm sure more folks will be back next week.
