MacBook Pro 13" 2010 Battery Problem?!

Hello everybody! I'm currently having a bit of a problem with my MacBook Pro here (2.4 gHz Core 2 Duo, mid 2010 model, 13")
Up until about a month ago, my battery capacity/health was fine--it was around 90% and considered "normal."
However, one night, I used my battery until it died completely (powered off; 0%) and left it off overnight. In the morning, it was REALLY cold and I turned it on, and it asked me to re-enter all my Wireless Settings and I was a bit concerned. I looked at my battery capacity and it was down to around 65% and said "Service Battery." Now, it's all the way down to 52% and still displays the same "Service Battery" warning. What should I do? Anything with the SMC Controls or anything like that? Thanks so much.

Service Battery means exactly that. Take it to an Apple store or AASP and have them replace the battery.

How many cycles depends on how often you drain the battery down low and then recharge it to maximum, ideally use it a little less on battery and a bit more on mains and the cycle count will slow down. Every couple of months you need to re-calibrate the Battery for best long term results.

  • MacBook Pro Mid 2010 Battery Capacity

I've read a few threads about this, mostly about battery capacity rapidly dropping after an install of ML. I installed ML when it first came out, and just noticed the drastic decrease in battery life about 3 weeks ago. My capacity could have potentially been dropping since I installed ML (and I just now noticed it), or it may have just started a couple weeks ago when I noticed. I'm not sure.
Either way, my MacBook Pro (Mid 2010) now has a battery life of less than an hour, even with extremely light processor load. I contacted Apple about this, and the tech said that the battery was rated for 1000 cycles. I'm currently at 220, and my battery capacity is a pathetic 30%. He said that since I wasn't under warranty, there was nothing they could do besides replace the battery - which I really want to avoid since I'm a broke college student.
Is there anything I can do here? I understand that I'm not under warranty anymore, and this wouldn't be a problem if my battery was degrading normally. However, getting 1/5th of the recommended battery life is pretty sad. I've read that doing a clean install of Mountain Lion/Lion might help. Is there a way I can do this without having to back up all my files? I don't have an external hard drive or anything.
It seems this is a common topic in these forums. Any help or links to solutions would be great. If this is answered in a similar topic, I'll gladly delete.
Here is the system info on my battery, incase that might help:

  • Macbook pro 13 (2010) click problem

I have problems with the touchpad of my Macbook Pro 13 (2010). I have the impression that the click (mechanical) does not always work. I often have to play two, sometimes three. It can be a software problem? I analyzed the mac with the cd of snow leopard and it seems there are no software problems. It may be that when upgrading to Lion the problem disappear?

    Hi.
I have MBP 15-inch late 2010. I startet to have some problems with trackpad clicking after the machine have been running for some time. Suddenly I have to click more then once to register. Very anoying. When still running SL i could logout and in again, or do a reboot. That solved the problem until I closed the lid. Then the problem came back about 80-90% of the time.
Now after I have installed Lion I hoped the problem would go away. It did not. Actually now not even reboot or logout seems to solve the problem.
I have JITOUCH installed as a 3.party trackpad program and I have had my suspisions that it could be the cause of the problem. However the problem is still there even when I disables it. Also I read that it could be that double click was performed if the speed was set to register to fast or something like that. Anyway I have not had any luck what so ever besides the logout/reboot routine.....that unfortunately do not work anymore.

  • MacBook Pro (Mid 2010) - crashing problems remain after fixes under warranty, what can I do?

    Hey all,
So I've had this computer (MacBook Pro 15" mid-2010 model) for a little over a year (bought it a few days after the refresh). Later in the year, it started to get regular crashes until it would become completely unresponsive to the point where turning it on meant I got several beeps (which apparently suggested the RAM was at fault). It was still under warranty, so I had it fixed (RAM replaced). The problems remained, so I returned to have it properly fixed. I went back and forth several times where it was said it had been fixed but actually wasn't. It got to the point where the whole logic board had to be replaced. Although now the keyboard backlight wasn't working, so had to go back and have that fixed as well.
Here's the problem, the MacBook Pro is no longer under warranty. However, the same crashes have started up again. Though it hasn't quite reached the state it was in last year, it still crashes like it use to back then when the crashes first started and I'm afraid that it will eventually reach the state it was in last year. Since the problem is the same as when I originally went to have to MacBook Pro fixed (which was while it was still under warranty) and it took several fixes before it seemed like it was fixed, it could very well still have the same problem. So with that reasoning, am I still covered under warranty?
Originally, I didn't think much of these crashes because all computers crash every now and again. But today when it crashed, it began beeping like it did last year when it wasn't working at all anymore. The crash in itself is totally random in relation to what I may be doing on the computer. The ways it crashes varies: random sudden shut down (not dead battery), a screen comes up suggesting I restart, screen completely freezes, screen goes weird with random color lines.
Also, I don't always get a crash report but I kept one that I did get about two weeks ago after a crash. Perhaps someone technical can take a look and tell me where the problem is in this case?:

I can assure you that the sympton is indeed identical. For as the computer got worse, eventually it refused to start up and made 3 beeps. It has done this before, but today more times than before (just like when it first had this problem). Where-ever you go on the internet, it will tell you that the 3 beeps suggest the RAM is at fault. So, the same 3 beeps, means the same problem, which is the RAM.
With that in mind, I re-ask my question with the same reasoning and justification; am I still covered under warranty? (Reasoning/Justification: Considering the original problem was not entirely fixed, though something else was to make the MacBook Pro last a little longer before the reoccurance of this problem).

  • Macbook pro late 2008 battery problem

I have a macbook pro late 2008 and I've been experiencing problems with the battery. I have changed the battery two times till now and now it's telling me to service battery. I am not a heavy user and I always try to drain the battery twice a month. Can it be the power supply?
    I need help

    Hi there,
I seem to have the same problem. My battery indicator gives me no more than 2 1/2 hours of battery life.
I checked to see if my computer was set to better battery performance and it was.
Now initially I thought that this may because of my external display (ACD 23") and my LaCie rugged external HD, which takes power from the FW connector. But even when I disconnect both of them I still only get two and a half hours of battery life, even when I leave the computer alone to just sit there.
Now I'm guessing this isn't normal. It may take an software update to correct this. But if this doesn't get corrected this thing is useless to me. And I will no doubt return it.

  • Macbook pro retina 13 battery problem?

Hello, I have macbook pro retina 13 with opened firefox and installed Sophos antivirus.
The battery at 80% says that 5 hours remain. Is that normal? The battery has 3 cycles.
    Thanks

No, it's not normal to install Sophos antivirus. Uninstall it: you're MacBook will thank you for it.

  • MacBook Pro Late 2013 battery problem?

I have the new MacBook Retina (bought it the day it was released). The first week I used it at 100% battery charge the remaining time I got was around the 10 hour mark and slowly went down.
Now only a couple of charge cycles when I booted it up (charge at 100%) time remaining started at around 3 hours and 47 minutes and increased 10 minutes every minute or so of usage until it got to around 6 hours 07mins or a bit more.
So my battery time starts low and increases but it used to do it the other way????
Anyone know what is going on? Running Mavericks. I didn't update or change anything in between uses. The Battery Health app is saying I got around 86% battery when in fact my Mac is saying 91%.
Also does the trackpad seem a bit different in the new Retinas? Almost like it doesnt fully click when you drag items?
    Thanks.

To all: Remember that notebooks with larger screen sizes are fitted with higher capacity batteries. The "8200" referred to could be a 15-inch MBP.
So stop the quessing and assuming and get a utility that has a database of accurate battery design capacity specs. I use Coconut Battery:
    http://www.coconut-flavour.com/coconutbattery/
That utility will accurately report the design capacity of your battery so you are not inferring some parameter of a another Mac product on yours.
And a quick comment: "Design Capacity" is a target value. Every battery is a bit different. Yours could be a little under or a little over the "nominal" value. A 2012 13-inch MBP has a nominal design capacity of 5770 maH per Coconut Battery, but mine was on the high side--about 5850 maH--when new. So don't go compalining if your is a little over or under the "design capacity." What you see in the utility is your actual capacity.

The machine would completely freeze, glitch, make crackling sounds that would persist until I forcefully shut the machine down by holding the power button for several seconds. This is one of the many problems I have with it. When I am typing a paper, or I'm watching a video, the machine's display will change to a solid color at random. After this, I reboot the machine and it gives me cpu caller 0 panic errors. It also will turn itself off and beep several times until I hold the power button down. I've done research and know that these are kernel panics, but I have no idea what causes this. I took it in to the genius bar at my local Apple Store, the guy named Tucker ran the diagnostics on my machine and he told me that the tests came back negative for issues and he then went to check the logs and saw that I had several kernel panic errors. He began to tell me that the 0 in the panics meant that they were software related and insisted that they wipe the cache to see if would help, and then if that didn't work then they offered to wipe it completely and reinstall Mavericks. They did so, and not even a day later the machine began to do the same things again with the solid screen colors, beeping, cpu caller 0's, and the crackling sound and screen rainbows. Even after updating to Yosemite, the problems still persist.
Can anyone please help me? I don't know what more I can do.

Here is the most up to date panic report.

  • Macbook pro mid 2010 13.3 inch - battery charging

    I have a Macbook Pro mid 2010, 13.3 inches.
The battery stopped charging, I see the problem was the dc MagSafe. Replaced it, now only connects the laptop (I've tried with another battery and the problem persists, my battery works and usually carries another laptop) and work with it plugged in but not charging the battery.
What should be the problem? Agurado suggestions ... I've tried the SMC, I tried to put another battery, etc etc, and the problem persists.
    I wish I could help.

Open System Profiler>Power and post this from your MBP:
(make certain that your charger is connected?
Also run an Apple Hardware Test:
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201257
Note that an error free AHT is not definitive.
    Ciao.

    Hey Clintonfrombirmingham
I called Apple technical support in Denmark, but with no positive reply.
She couldn't do anything, and said that They had sent a recall Email about the problem and with their offer to repair the Macbook Pro, but I'd never recieved an Email about the problem. She wasn't in power to make an exception. It can't be true that i paid a lot of money, for a product that can't barely stand on its own feets, Apple didn't tell me that the product I was about to buy, would restart every 5 minute. and now when  they know the problem, they wont repair it? it just don't make sense for me. If a car seller discovers that all the brakes in a car he had sold, will crash after some years he will call all the cars back to repair no mater what. i just don't understand how Apple will make good service for their custumers, by extending the warranty from 2 to 3 years, but wont take the computers there is a little bit to old, 4 months will make the difference. i can't believe it.
    What can i do now?
    best regards Oskar

My Macbook pro, (late 2010) sometimes will sleep and won't wake up. then the sleep light flashes. What's the problem

Hi I've been following this thread (along with a different one on the same topic). I've been having the same problem with my ibook. I can add that I have no problem with startup. It's just that the screen "goes to sleep" unexpectedly and may operate normally for a few minutes or a few hours at most. Opening and closing the lid or restarting seems to cause it to awaken but then usually for just a few seconds or minutes. If it is connected to another video display that display continues functioning fine even though the computer screen is blank. In addition the desktop is there and visible faintly or if totally blank can be backlit through the apple logo and can be read. I've had my logic board replaced twice under the extended warranty and assumed it was that but now I'm thinking of the reed switch. Apple refuses to consider any further work under warranty as the last repair was in Jan, 06 and they claim only a 90 parts warranty and the machine is from 03. Any thoughts before I cut the wires? I have reset the pmu, run cocktail and disk utility. Other than the sleep issue the machine works fine. thanks Ronda or anyone else who has any ideas... Dave

  • Macbook pro 13' 2010 line out problem

    My problem is:
When i use the line out on my Macbook pro (13' 2010), before the sound or music start i hear a "click"  (or pop, i don't know how to call) noise on the headphones (or a connected speaker).
If i stop playing, and after a while (about 20 seconds), i hear a "click" again.
I think this is because it turns on and off the line out port on the macbook. (turn on the line out when i start to play, and turn off when i stop to play).
This is normal? This is irritating me, because it's annoying.
Is there a fix for this?
    Please help me.

I just tried it on my wifes 13" and  it does have a slight pop, very low in level at the beginning of a track, and while in pause. I did a pram reset and it seemed to reduce hoe often it happens, especially in pause mode and it now seems to not do it on every song. It was VERY low in level and has not popped at all in pause while I typed this response. It might be a part of Apple cheaping out the audio section on the 13', I have a 15" and never had this issue. She never mentioned it to me, but she usuallly listens to her music very quiet.  Still no pops, where as before the pram reset there was one about every 1/2 minute or so in pause mode. You might want to give it a try and see if it helps. But it still does it at the start of the first song but I did not here it going into the next.  Pram reset: disconnect all peripherals, power offthe MBP,power it back on and hold the following keys. Option, comand,P,R(no commas) Press these keys before the start chime and continue to hold them till you hear the start chime 3 times then release. Maybe it will help.  All the best
