Macbook Pro 2011 13.3 base model vs. 15.4 base model for my use?
I am a light gamer, rarely playing those shooters. I have heard the 13 inch runs extremely hot and has some wifi issues. I am not sure if the 15 inch has the same issues, it'd be helpful if someone does know. I care about bootup speed, application speed and being able to multitask. I am trying to figure out if the 15 inch will perform $600 better or not.
Battery life is also important to me, and i also like video and sound quality. This would be my first mac.
Thanks.
I should add that I would be using this as an everday computer for myself. I use a 14 inch laptop at work. My old at home laptop was 15.4.
If size and weight are not a concern, then, by all other criteria the 15" outperforms the 13". It's no contest, the 15" wins by a long margin.
Having said that, personally, I prefer the 13" for portability. However, if your MBP is primarily desk bound then, yes, to the 15".
If you want to play games again the 15" over the 13".
All the MBPs get hot when reving up the CPU. Other than video rendering or some games, the MBPs should run cool for all other day-to-day computing tasks.

I've installed windows 7 with the help of bootcamp on my macbook pro 2011.
Please help me how to install mac drivers for windows7 64 bit???You either download drivers from within Boot Camp Assistant and save to USB FAT disk, or you insert and use 10.6.x OS X DVD when in Windows and install and run the SETUP from there.

Step 4: Install the Boot Camp Drivers for Windows
After installing Windows, install Mac-specific drivers and other software for Windows using your Mac OS X installation disc. The Mac OS X disc installs drivers to support Mac components, including AirPort,built-in iSight camera, the Apple Remote, the trackpad on a portable Mac, and thefunction keys on an Apple keyboard.
The Mac OS X disc also installs the Boot Camp control panel for Windows and theApple Boot Camp system tray item.
To install the Boot Camp drivers:
1 Eject the Windows installation disc.
2 Insert the Mac OS X disc. If the installer doesn’t start automatically, browse the disc using Windows Explorerand double-click the setup.exe file in the Boot Camp directory.
3 Follow the onscreen instructions.
If a message appears that says the software you’re installing has not passed Windows Logo testing, click Continue Anyway.
Windows that appear only briefly during the installation don’t require your input.
If nothing appears to be happening, there may be a hidden window that you mustrespond to. Check the taskbar and look behind open windows.
Important: Do not click the Cancel button in any of the installer dialogs.
4 After your computer restarts, follow the instructions in the Found New Hardware Wizard to update your software drivers (Windows XP only).
5 Follow the instructions for any other wizards that appear.
6 Check for updated Boot Camp drivers by using Apple Software Update or going to www.apple.com/support/bootcamp.
If You Have Problems Installing the Device Drivers
If it appears that the Boot Camp drivers weren’t successfully installed, try repairing them.
To repair Boot Camp drivers:
1 Start up your computer in Windows.
2 Insert your Mac OS X installation disc.
3 If the installer doesn’t start automatically, browse the disc using Windows Explorerand double-click the setup.exe file in the Boot Camp directory.
4 Click Repair and follow the onscreen instructions.
If a message appears that says the software you’re installing has not passed Windows Logo testing, click Continue Anyway.
If you need to reinstall specific drivers, you can install one driver at a time. For example,if your built-in iSight camera isn’t working, you can reinstall just the iSight driver.
Individual drivers are in the Drivers folder on the Mac OS X installation disc. -

Solid State Drive MacBook Pro 2011
Good morning, I have a macbook pro 2011 and I want to change my internal hard drive for a solid state drive, which is the model and brand that works well?
I could recommend which to buy?
thanksHi Marcelo 22,
I upgraded the drive in my macbook pro 2011 with an OWC Mercury 480GB Extreme Pro. It work beautifully for a number of months. Then the laptop died with the display issue that is plaguing many macbooks of this vintage.
End result for me is a big investment in a nice drive, but in actual fact its pointless as the macbook is so unreliable its not usable.
If you had a differnt year of laptop, I'd say 100% do it. Its worth it. But as its a 2011, I'd say leave it. Wait to see if Apple resolve the GPU issue or if you're luck enough to have avoided it.
I don't believe for a minute that the upgrade of the drive caused this issue.
Regards

Macbook Pro (2011 Model) suddenly does not boot from SSD in main bay
I have been using Macbook pro 2011 and Samsung SSD (256GB) for about a year.
All of sudden, the computer will not from SSD from the main bay, but it will boot from the optical bay.
I have tried an Intel SSD 120gb which came with the computer, but it does not work either.
However, it will boot from the regualr hard drive from the main bay.
I have read somewhere that it could be due to the hard drive flex cable.
Has anyone experienced a similar problem? It may very well be a problem with the SATA cable... for some reason (and I don't know why, but...) SSDs seem more prone in 'detecting' a faulty SATA cable than a standard hard drive. Where a hard drive will boot, an SSD will not.
I would advise purchasing a new SATA cable - from ifixit.com or powerbookmedic.com - and replacing the cable. That (normally) clears up the problem.

So a few weeks ago my MacBook Pro 2011 started having charging problems. I would use it normally. Then plug it in to charge anywhere between 5-20 percent like I've been doing for the past year that I've had it (since August 2011). Anyway, what happens now is that it charges but extremely slowly - at least 4 hours to fully charge as opposed to the 1 1/2 to 2 hours that it used to take. Also, it seems to be draining a lot quicker than it used to while only browsing the internet. Furthermore, while charging, the battery meter goes from the percent its charged to to "not charging" back and forth. What's going on? Is there a problem with my battery, my computer, or the magsafe charger? [please refer to the pictures below to get a better understanding of my problem - these pictures were taken over a 2 hour time period - a time period that usually is enough to charge my computer] - if you'll notice, in the first two pictures, the percent barely went up by 10 in a half hour period:

Macbook Pro 2011 running very slowly after upgrading to Mavericks
I am in deep trouble with my wife so any help would be gratefully accepted.
Shortly after Mavericks became available I upgraded my wife's Macbook Pro 2011 to use the new OS version. Ever since then, the Macbook has been running noticeably slowly. In particular, Mail is almost unusuable taking minutes to open and showing long delays while moving around messages, folders, etc. Excel and Word are also much slower, Safari is slow, in fact just about everything is grinding.
Any ideas on what can I can do to improve things and apease my unhappy wife would be much appreciated.
I have attached the Etrecheck output FYI
Thanks

Macbook Pro 2011 - Apple It's time
Hi,
So I'm the owner of a new second-hand 17" Macbook, for years I've dreamed of getting one of these and today was finally the day it happened. Specs are
Macbook Pro 2011 Late
i7 2.4Ghz
6770m
8gb RAM
At first the laptop booted up fine so I decided to do what any new proud macbook owner would do, show it of at work. During the course of the day I experienced intermittent freezing issues and eventually a blue screen of death. I thought to myself that I must of brought a dud and immediately went to contact the person I brought it of for a refund. Being a genuine trader he was more than happy to oblige and give me a full refund. Frustratingly this macbook had already grown on me enough to the point where I was determined to research into solution. Initially I suspected a HDD fault so I went to attempt a apple internet recovery, all that solved was my blue screen of death and changed it to a grey screen of death. Digging deeper it was clear from countless others in my situation that the issue was being caused by the GPU.
Now I'm no apple genius but I have enough of a computer technical background to know when something has not been done right. Now clearly apple has done wrong in the manufacturing process of GPU soldering and thermal paste application. This issue is nowhere relevant to software except for the point in which the system switches from the integrated to the faulty discrete GPU like it's suppose to in high-intensive tasks. Having this macbook for only a day and some determined researching its pretty simple to join the dots. The soldering process and material they used was doomed to fail from the start, eventually all 2011 models with discrete GPU's will burn out, it just depends on how well their owners have taken care of them. In regards to the thermal paste application you will be able to see from my images the kind of care and pride apples has undertaken in applying it. There was more around the CPU & GPU than there was on itself, that's like having a peanut butter and jelly sandwich with most of the peanut butter and jelly smeared around the plate. Considering this laptop would of cost close to 4500NZ back in the day I can't imagine what other original 2011 Macbook owners are feeling.
What makes it worse is that apple techies you go to will say a full logic board replacement will be needed from your own pocket when your macbook was already doomed, isn't that a way to rub further salt into the wounds Apple. Opening up my macbook it was obvious to see that the logic board inside was not the original and sometime during it's lifetime it too had a full logic board replacement. However I can't say if it was for the same reasons. Regardless it's obvious that replacing the logic board does not solve the issue and wastes everybody's time and money.
Apple, these macs require two things.
-A solder repair for the GPU
-A re-application of thermal paste
It's really not that much to ask considering the worth of these laptops, also wouldn't you rather have these leaving a legacy of the ultimate desktop replacement than apples shameful ticking time bomb?
I'm typing this of the very macbook having these issues so for anyone who wants a temporary fix please refer to the free gfxCardStatus software which allows you to force integrated graphics only. For now it's stable but dreadfully hinders the potential this beast was made for.
"Sometimes when you innovate, you make mistakes. It is best to admit them quickly, and get on with improving your other innovations."
"Quality is more important than quantity. One home run is much better than two doubles."
Steve Jobs
In hopes that apple does not remove this post. There is excessive swapping of data between physical memory and virtual memory.
That can happen for two reasons:
You have a long-running process with a memory leak (i.e., a bug), or
You don't have enough memory installed for your usage pattern.
Tracking down a memory leak can be difficult, and it may come down to a process of elimination.
In the Activity Monitor application, select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected. Click the heading of the Real Mem column in the process table twice to sort the table with the highest value at the top. If you don't see that column, select
View ▹ Columns ▹ Real Memory
from the menu bar.
If one process (excluding "kernel_task") is using much more memory than all the others, that could be an indication of a leak. A better indication would be a process that continually grabs more and more real memory over time without ever releasing it. Here is an example of how it's done.
The process named "Safari Web Content" renders web pages for Safari and other applications. It uses a lot of memory and may leak if certain Safari extensions or third-party web plugins are installed. Consider it a prime suspect.
If you don't have an obvious memory leak, your options are to install more memory (if possible) or to run fewer programs simultaneously.
The next suggestion is only for users familiar with the shell. For a more precise, but potentially misleading, test, run the following command:
sudo leaks -nocontext -nostacks process | grep total
where process is the name of a process you suspect of leaking memory. Almost every process will leak some memory; the question is how much, and especially how much the leak increases with time. I can’t be more specific. See the leaks(1) man page and the Apple developer documentation for details. -
Hi there. I have a brand new MacBook Pro 2011 and I'm having some problems with my wireless connection. I have in the same room a Mac Mini, my Ipad , my Ipod, 3 PC's and all of them have a wireless connection. I notice that since my last MacOSX update I have some problems with my wireless connectivity in my Macmini. Now I'm having the same problem in my macbook pro. I have internet in all my other devices but no internet in my Mac Mini or Macbook. The Access point is 5 meters away from my devices. I put some repeater in the middle to repeat the signal but I'm getting the same beavior. Can someone help me on this? If I go to the network setting and renew my DHCP address I can access the internet but after 15 minutes I'm getting the same problem again.
The signal bar on the menubar is not always an accurate indicator of how strong the signal is. A more accurate measure is if the signal drops entirely and you are definitely in range of the airport base station. Also anywhere within 3 meters you may get signal degradation because of overlapping radio waves cancelling each other out. You also have the option to ask to speak to a customer relations person when you call AppleCare, and ask for an expedited repair, and have your airport card properly seated. Sometimes they can get loose, or the antenna can get loose inside, though normally this isn't a problem unless the machine has to be opened for some reason.

3 week old Macbook Pro 2011 now has dot in middle of screen?
I bought my Macbook pro 2011 Hi-res 15" Glossy - Configured to Order 3 weeks ago from the Apple Online Store. After installing and playing a game this week, I notice that a grey dot appeared in the middle of the screen, especially noticeable when browsing on safari, with a white background.
Is this a dead pixel or stuck pixel? what should I do? What can Apple do?Do you have access to an Apple Store? If so, take your Mac in for evaluation and ask. We are just fellow users, so we can't speak for Apple.
Pixel problems are a judgement call--Apple will determine what should be done on a case by case basis. If Apple determines that the display is unsatisfactory because of this flaw, you might possibly get a replacement display, especially since your problem is in the center.
Good luck! -

Macbook Pro 2011 don't recognize Monitor AOC e224eFw, hence not displaying correct resolution
Two days ago after i put my Macbook Pro 2011 to sleep with the Mini DisplayPort connected (always do the same) stopped identifying my External Monitor, AOC e224eFw showing it as "standard VGA" so i have no the right screen resolutions. I've tried to PRAM reset, SMC reset and not working.
Must say worked 2 days ago. Tried my old trusty Macbook Black 1st Gen and it's working OK with that one.
Any idea why?
Any help will be highly appretiate.

MacBook Pro 2011 - iSight HD camera not HD in Photo Booth
Dear reader,
I have the new MacBook Pro (2011 model), the 15" 2,2ghz with an OCZ Vertex 3 SSD and 8GB of ram.
When I want to make photos in Photo Booth it says it's using the "Facetime HD Camera (Built-in)" but it does not make HD pictures. The picture size is restricted to 640 x 480 pixels and I want them to be HD so I can make pictures of documents and store them on my Mac.
I cannot find the solution anywhere. Do you know what to do?
Thanks in Advance!
Greetings,
Julius van der KwastI think this is a false advertisement as was the case with iPad back facing camera. Steve job called it HD camera but it is not HD at *all*. They did not mention the resolution, where 720p, 1080p?
It is just a better camera they are calling HD. Cheap advertisement. -
MacBook Pro 2011 - 15" Core i7 - SSD - Heating, Screen Flickering Issues
Hello,
I recently brought MacBook Pro 2011 15" Anti-glare High Resolution with Core i7 2.2 G Hz, SSD, 8GB of RAM. I installed Microsoft Office and Angry Birds at this time. I'm facing multiple issues with my first Mac. Is anyone facing these kinds of issues in new MacBook Pro 15" models?
Issue 1: Heating: Fan running on high speed even though room temp is below 60F. No major applications are running at that time expect Office 2011 and web surfing (NOT watching any video) and listening iTunes.
Issue 2: When I log-off from computer, the screen flickers and goes to lower resolution. Also the windows colors changed to different colors. After log-in, I went to System Preferences > Displays. The highest resolution is already selected (1680 x 1050) When I try to change to lower, it changes but still displays different window colors and changing suddenly.
Troubleshooting Steps:
1.) Shutdown and Disconnected Power Cable (at that time battery is at 65%)
2.) Reconnected Power Cable and Power On the system
3.) Display shows correctly.
Unable to Resolve:
1.) Still fan is running on higher speed at low temp (below 60F with no major application running)
2.) Sometimes Display is not showing properly. It shows different color shades.
I scheduled support call with Apple Support and let's see what Apple can do...I brought my first MacBook Pro 2011 on Day 1, so I can't return it since it won't come under 14 day return policy. I'm taking my Mac to Apple Store to fix all these issues. AppleInsider is also confirmed Disaplay Flicker issue on some of the models that they tested.
