Macbook pro 2011 - severe overheating issues

I just recently received my 2011 15" 2.2 GHz Macbook Pro from Apple. (It came via FedEx Monday morning.)
I noticed right away how quickly it heats up and how often the fans kick in; even when simply browsing the web using Safari. I began using it for Music Production, which is the purpose I intended to buy it for in the first place, using programs such as Logic Studio, Abelton Live, and even GarageBand, and notice that it became hot to the touch within 10 to 15 minutes. The entire aluminum enclosure heats up; especially on the bottom: so hot that I could feel the heat against the desk in which I have it sitting on. It also heats up around the speakers, power button, certain places on the keyboard, and the trackpad. It shut off twice within one hour after reaching what I can only assume were very high temperatures, temperatures most likely unsafe for this machine. Right before it shut off the last time I noticed that something smelt like it was very hot, almost burning, you know that smell?
My question is, since I do not have the AppleCare (not as of right now, that is. I definitely plan to by the end of the day,) but it is a completely new Macbook Pro, can I take it to Apple to have them at least take a look at it without it costing me anything (at least up front)?

Not to interrupt the great advise given so far, but I cannot resist...
Here are my thoughts:
The machine is broke with hardware issues.
It is new the machine is designed to shut itself off if temp reach dangerous damaging temps.
This has happened, what 3 times at least.
SMC/PRAM reset is likely not going to fix this problem and a fresh install, well, em' probably not. I would be surprised. Only because your machine keeps shutting itself off. Not sure if the other poster had their machine shutting down on them or just a temp heat problem.
Here is my suggestion when you take it to the genius bar.
1. be patient and let them check it out.
2. If they want to do a reinstall let them, but make sure you have your data backed up before you go.
3. If you do a clean install at the Genius bar, DO NOT leave the store with out testing it thoroughly.
4. You have 14 days after purchase to return any Mac.
5. If you are with in this 14 days, Do Not let them convince you to send the machine in for repair. Do an exchange or return.

  • Macbook Pro 2011 Internal Speakers Issue

I just discovered an issue with the internal speakers of my Macbook Pro 2011.
The balance of the left and right speaker is off.
When I move the balance slider all the way to the right only the right speaker is active (as it should be). When I move the balance slider all the way to the left, the left speaker is active, BUT also the right (not as loud as the left one though).
When the slider is set to the middle the right speaker is definitely louder than the left one.
Do you have the same problem?
(2 members from other forums have confirmed this problem)

    Ok....I just found this here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3336
    Quote:
+"You may notice that when you move the Balance slider in the Sound preferences pane far to the left speaker that you can still hear sound from the right side of the MacBook Pro.+
+This sound is actually generated by the sub-woofer, but because of its placement, the audio from the subwoofer seems to be coming from the right side speaker. Due to the placement+
+of the subwoofer it is normal for the sound stage to seem shifted slightly towards the right speaker. If you prefer, you can adjust the balance control to shift the sound stage to the left or right side."+
So there's no need for a PRAM reset then I guess...

  • MacBook Pro 2011 Flash Stutter Issue

This is a very specific problem that flares periodically, but consistently enough so that it's very noticeable and bothersome.
When watching flash, the audio occasionally struggles for a mere half a second, creating a distinctive pop or clicking noise. It's very, very quick. The video also will pause on occasion, though much more rarely. These two issues are sometimes, but not always, mutually exclusive.
I have no idea what could be causing this issue as I've had the computer for less than two weeks. On a side note, my VLC has also struggled on occasion, with the audio stuttering and the video artifacting like it never did on my 1.6 GHz 1 GB RAM Toshiba.
I'm not sure if these issues are all related. I can say that I got a similar popping in Ableton when playing four notes at once, if that helps with anything.
Finally, when flipping up and down web pages with the two-finger gesture, the scrolling visibly slows as if the entire frame rate drops as I roll over Flash content. This does not always happen, and I've noticed the problem on Safari, Chrome, and Firefox (including Firefox 4, the RC). I only mention it because it seems to me like something isn't doing what it needs to in terms of audio and video, especially when it comes to Flash.

I am having this exact issue, it seems to get worse with every minute constantly running a flash application, and the skipping or stuttering is not isolated to the flash program itself, it makes the entire computer stutter.
As I type this I have a flash game running in a different tab. As the sound from that game stutters, the letters I am typing also lag, and the music in my itunes skips as well.
This problem is absolutely maddening and unacceptable IMO. I wish Apple would just buy Adobe and get it over with so they could streamline Flash and their products.

  • New Macbook Pro 2011 MAJOR battery issues

I just bought a refurbished Macbook Pro, it was built on a couple of months ago so it is pretty much brand new.
    17 inch.
I'm having some battery issues. Yesterday I noticed that my charger (l-shaped) wouldn't light up -
it also wouldn't charge. After some fiddling around the light came on but in my menubar it read - "Not Charging".
Eventually I reset my smc or whatever it's called and now it is charging -
    but now,
    1) it won't charge to 100.
    2) at 97 percent it shows 7 hours 26 minutes left and then BAM!
it goes right down to about 3 and a half hours. And I'm not running anything but the internet.
    What the heck?!?!?!

You said " it is a problem with ALL current macbook pros. I did take it to an Apple store and the "Genius" confirmed this.".
It seems to me that the problem then should have been rectified at the Apple store and yout post is unnecessary.  If the matter has not been resolved I suggest that you go back to the Genius Bar and have them fix it.  No one here can do so.
Please understand that we are here by our own volition, we are volunteers, we don't get paid, and I would say that we make our best effort to help others based on our respective knowledge bases.  Points are welcome but I suspect thank you's are more so.

  • Late 2013 Retina MacBook Pro - ODD SEVERE POWER ISSUE?

My late 2013 retina macbook pro 13" was on safari (on battery, not plugged in) and then the screen went black. The screen went back on, then back to black, then back on, then the Macbook shut off completely.
Then, it tried rebooting twice, both failing to get past a gray screen and startup tone / chime before turning off for good. Now it won't turn on besides you seeing a gray screen and barely hearing the chime before it turning straight off again.
Any suggestions would be great! I have important files that are for a deadline within a couple days!

Try resetting the SMC. If that doesn't work, take it to the Genius Bar. You're under warranty.

  • MacBook Pro 2011 AirPort Driver Issue Causes Grey Screen of Death

Hello, I'd like to report a problem with the AirPort driver. It appears that if you connect to an AdHoc source for internet connection, the computer after a few minutes will crash with a Grey Screen of Death. Upon reboot it says a serious error has occurred with a stack trace pointing back to the AirPort driver. I have all the latest patches installed as well. I thought this was a problem with my laptop so I exchanged it for another with and it exhibited the same problem.

Do you know if he submitted an error report after the crash? I got prompted but I didn't get a chance to because I wasn't in a WiFi zone and after reformatting the machine, I don't want to get another GSOD so I haven't connected to Ad-Hoc so I hope someone else was able to successfully report it.

  • My 13" macbook pro 2011 overheating anyone with same issue?

my 13" macbook pro 2011 turn hot when i open windows (boot camp) and also using microsoft word on mac os x, why this issue happen? anyone with same issue?

try smcfancontrol.its a good program controling the temp of computer if you set the speed of fan to a high value.
you know, the temp increases a lot when you are watching movies or doing work like data base or office work, due to high usage of processor.

  • Online video playback is severally laggy/choppy on my macbook pro 2011?

hey guys, got a bit of an issue here. I've been noticing some SEVERE lagging issues whilst viewing online (streaming) video, from various sites, including, novamov, youtube, and others. the videos rarely stop to buffer as i have a fast connection, but yet they still seem to lag wildly. what i mean by this, is the sound will continue as normal, the the picture will freeze sometimes for a good 5 seconds or so before resuming, this is happening increasingly more and more..
i am running Mac OSX Lion (latest Update) on my:
    MacBook Pro
    17-inch, Early 2011
Processor 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics Intel HD Graphics 3000 512 MB
    Software Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3 (11D50b)
If it helps my hard drive space is:
    Macintosh HD
    Capacity: 664 GB
    Available: 179.79 GB
The browser i am using is the latest version of Safari, although i have tried firefox and chrome and i experience the same issue.
I have Sophos anti-virus installed and run regular scans on my system (all clear)
i really can't think of anything else which could be causing an issue here. I haven't installed any additional software for a while, not in the time frame since the error started to occur.
I am quite surprised to be experiencing such issues as lagging on something as simple as a youtube video when my £3000+ computer handles heavy applications such as Final cut pro and Photoshop with ease...
i MUST be missing something here,
I really would appreciate any help i can get here.
thankyou very much for your time
    ben

    Hey Carolyn,
Worked a treat, de-jaggy video for first time in months!!! Only point of clarification, I manually deleted the Flash plug-in before I uninstalled Flash. Don't know if this was why it worked for me rather than others but hey ...
    Thanks again!

    Hi Ben...
I am quite surprised to be experiencing such issues as lagging on something as simple as a youtube video
Try troubleshooting the Flash plugin required for most YouTube video.
Quit all open browsers. I'm using Safari as a test.
Open System Preferences > Flash Player then select the Storage tab. Click: Delete All
Now uninstall the Flash plugin then reinstall new >  Troubleshoot Flash Player | Mac OS
Make sure and uninstall the current plugin first.
Then launch Safari. From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Empty Cache
    Now try a video.
BTW... if you have the ClickToFlash extension installed, that can prevent Flash based video from streaming. It can also be installed as a plugin in /Library/Internet-Plug-Ins.
And check to see if Safari is running in 32 bit mode. Right or control click the Safari icon in your Applications folder then click Get Info. If the box next to:  Open in 32 bit mode  is selected, deselect, quit then relaunch Safari.

  • Macbook Pro 2011 won't turn on (RAM issue?)

(Macbook pro 2011) I had water damage so I sent in to apple for a complete makeover and they pretty much replaced everything. The laptop seemed to be working fine but the issue is that when I put my laptop to sleep / turn off it won't turn back on. I haven't had the time to take my laptop back to the apple store due to projects / travelling. I've found that there is one quick fix, manually resetting the ram by taking the RAM chips out for a second then re-inserting them. The other way is to hold Command+Option+P+R 3 times before reboot and that'll work temporarily for a day maybe. I plan on taking it to the apple store in a day or so if the problem doesn't resolve itself. Do you guys have any suggestions?
    Thanks,

Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Is there a compatibility issue with the Current USB 3 external Hard drives and MacBook Pro 2011 (USB 2)?

I am currently having bad hangs with my 13" MacBook Pro (2011) which I book 2012 ad a New external Harddrive (WD My Passport Edge) which was given to me as a gift.
Friends of mine told me there is a compatibility issue between the USB 3 cord and the USB outlet of my MacBook Pro.
Although this shouldnt be the case as the box of the Hard drive I got said it was compatible.
I even downloaded the WD Drive Utilities and sometimes whenthe Harddrive is plugged in the Utilities doean't Open but just bleeps in the Applications Dock.
Before I used the Harddrive I read a lot from the WD Manual and went to their site and downloaded a firmware update so I really don't know what the problem is.
What I am afraid of is that I may lose some files if I place them in the external Harddrive.
Can anyone help me with this or should I be asking for a replacement harddrive?
This is my first experience with an external hard drive as I never used one before.
    Thank you very much.

To be honest, I've had back luck with Western Digital drives and I avoid them at all costs. If I were you, I would return the WD drive and look at externals from OWC or MacMall (LaCie, even G-Tech).
That's just my personal opinion, mind you...

  • MacBook Pro 2011 - 15" Core i7 - SSD - Heating, Screen Flickering Issues

    Hello,
I recently brought MacBook Pro 2011 15" Anti-glare High Resolution with Core i7 2.2 G Hz, SSD, 8GB of RAM. I installed Microsoft Office and Angry Birds at this time. I'm facing multiple issues with my first Mac. Is anyone facing these kinds of issues in new MacBook Pro 15" models?
Issue 1: Heating: Fan running on high speed even though room temp is below 60F. No major applications are running at that time expect Office 2011 and web surfing (NOT watching any video) and listening iTunes.
Issue 2: When I log-off from computer, the screen flickers and goes to lower resolution. Also the windows colors changed to different colors. After log-in, I went to System Preferences > Displays. The highest resolution is already selected (1680 x 1050) When I try to change to lower, it changes but still displays different window colors and changing suddenly.
    Troubleshooting Steps:
1.) Shutdown and Disconnected Power Cable (at that time battery is at 65%)
2.) Reconnected Power Cable and Power On the system
    3.) Display shows correctly.
    Unable to Resolve:
1.) Still fan is running on higher speed at low temp (below 60F with no major application running)
2.) Sometimes Display is not showing properly. It shows different color shades.
I scheduled support call with Apple Support and let's see what Apple can do...

I brought my first MacBook Pro 2011 on Day 1, so I can't return it since it won't come under 14 day return policy. I'm taking my Mac to Apple Store to fix all these issues. AppleInsider is also confirmed Disaplay Flicker issue on some of the models that they tested.

  • MacBook Pro 2011 Repair Extension Program for Video Issues -Feedback?

Anybody have any feedback from the MacBook Pro 2011 Repair Extension Program for Video Issues?
I had my early 2011 15 inch 8,2 repaired (free) under the extension program. The machine now appears to run well - but much hotter than before. The case is significantly hotter - especially at the GPU corner and the fans are constantly on moderate to high (not full). Anybody else experiencing similar changes?

    Run an Apple Hardware Test;
    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201257
Note an error free AHT is not definitive.
    install iStat menus:

Set Activity Monitor to ALL PROCESSES and set CPU to display values from high to low.
When the MBP gets hot, post images of both for inspection.

  • Issue with Macbook Pro 2011

Hi there. I have a brand new MacBook Pro 2011 and I'm having some problems with my wireless connection. I have in the same room a Mac Mini, my Ipad , my Ipod, 3 PC's and all of them have a wireless connection. I notice that since my last MacOSX update I have some problems with my wireless connectivity in my Macmini. Now I'm having the same problem in my macbook pro. I have internet in all my other devices but no internet in my Mac Mini or Macbook. The Access point is 5 meters away from my devices. I put some repeater in the middle to repeat the signal but I'm getting the same beavior. Can someone help me on this? If I go to the network setting and renew my DHCP address I can access the internet but after 15 minutes I'm getting the same problem again.

The signal bar on the menubar is not always an accurate indicator of how strong the signal is.  A more accurate measure is if the signal drops entirely and you are definitely in range of the airport base station.  Also anywhere within 3 meters you may get signal degradation because of overlapping radio waves cancelling each other out.  You also have the option to ask to speak to a customer relations person when you call AppleCare, and ask for an expedited repair, and have your airport card properly seated.  Sometimes they can get loose, or the antenna can get loose inside, though normally this isn't a problem unless the machine has to be opened for some reason.

  • Display issue - My macbook pro 2011 detects my display but does not display an image

Hi, I am having a problem connecting my MacBook Pro (2011) to my HP 2511x display.  I used the display all morning with my mbp connected and closed.  When I came back, after the computer went to sleep, I cannot get any image on the display.  The computer detects the display but no image appears.
    I have tried-
Installing the latest firmware and software updates
restarting both the computer and monitor
trying all of the possible display arrangements and settings for resolution and refresh rates
Also I am connected using a minidisplay to DVI adaptor in the thunderbolt port.
    Any and all suggestions appreciated.
    thanks.

    Hello Aminetti,
It sounds like your computer goes to sleep, and will not wake up, so you must manually restart your computer. I recommend the troubleshooting in the following article:
OS X: When your Mac doesn't sleep or wake
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5357
    Reset SMC
    Reset NVRAM/PRAM
    Test with external devices disconnected
    Try Safe Mode
    Try another user account
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the best,
    Sterling

  • How hot exactly can a macbook pro 2011 get before overheating.

I want to play games on my macbook pro 2011, but I only want to play ones that will not overheat it, and it tends to get hot on some of them, how hot exactly can they get? at what temperature will they overheat? is there a way to check?

You may download from the Internet iStat pro which monitors the internal temperatures of the MBP as well as the fan speeds.  The temperatures can get as high as 100 C. but before any harm can occur there are internal temperature sensors that will shut the MBP down.
    Ciao.
