Can I update my 13 inch macbook pro's intel hd3000 driver, with the one from intel's support site and expect the same stability, as with the boot camp's drivers?And perhaps better performance?

As the switching is not done via nVidia's Optimus technology, there is not a standard driver package that you can install that will achieve this (AMD/ATI's Catalyst package does not have GPU switching capabilities). Either Apple or a third party would need to develop and support this.

Dear all,
I'm considering purchasing a MacBook PRO 2011 17" model (for the hardware, not for OSX, sorry). I want to run Windows 7 on it (not virtualized).
I did see from the Boot Camp description that Boot Camp provides drivers for both the Intel HD and the AMD graphics card. I'm not concerned with automatic graphics switching, since I won't be using it for gaming.
Since I'm going to be travelling by train quite a bit and want to be able to do my work en route, I would like to know if I will be able to select the integrated Intel graphics under Windows 7 (x64), or if I'm forced to use the AMD graphics.

I have in the last month bought a new MacBook Pro from the apple store, 17"
Model Identifier: MacBookPro8,3
I have tried moving my C300 from my old macbook pro but it jsut doesnt work in the MBP. I have read about 400 sites which state that this or that is the problem with no definative answers.
Do I need to buy a different model SSD drive or even downgrade to Sata 2?

Macbook Pro Needs Windows CD in drive to boot to Windows

Have a Mac book Pro (Early 2011..8,2) that was setup for dual boot. OSX (10.6.8) and Windows 7.
Due to a issue with the hard drive I had to backup data and rebuild which worked fine for OSX but unable to get Windows 7 to boot correctly.
Holding Down Option key at start-up gives the options of booting to OSX or Windows.
OSX - Works fine and able to view the Windows partition and see files there.
Windows - "No bootable device -- insert boot disk press any key” message
Here's the confusing part. If I boot to Windows with the Windows DVD in the drive I get the message "Press Any Key to Boot from CD or DVD" message and if I don't press anything, it boots to Windows and works.
Have already tried wiping the drive completely and reinstalling both OS's but same issue with windows each time.
Anyone see this before or have any idea on a solution?

Then installed debian 6. Somehow after the debian install and restart (I know this sounds crazy) but I am now reduced to Win 7 only. rEFit is not present when rebooting nor is OSX or debian. Further, I am unable to force the install DVD to launch when rebooting, by holding C, D or F8. The Option key brings me to the grey screen with a padlock. I have attempted the root and local pw- no go. Restart holding D takes me to the windows boot manager. I have attempted several options within the Advanced Options; including – Repair Your computer, safe mode and “last known good config,” All of which did nothing.
I can see all my OSX files within win7. I tried to install the OSX within windows. Ya right, that did nothing..
I only desire to get back to OSX...

Yes, you royally hosed up your machine.
You should first try to get your files off, any way you can to a external drive.
Your going to need to hold c and boot from the disk that came with your computer and a couple of screens in under the menu is a option for Disk Utility.
Select your drive and Erase with Security Option Zero, format the drive HFS+ Journaled and when that's finished (about a hour or so) then quit and install OS X from the installer.
I hope this works, but I suspect it won't. Others have hosed their machines trying to use a Linux disk without proper partition formatting too.
Another option might be to use another Mac to c boot off the Snow Leopard disk and install OS X onto a external drive, take that to the problem Mac and try holding option and booting off of it to erase your internal drive.
You could replace the drive.

Can I install windows 7 on a second internal drive on a macbook pro 2011? I have 2 500 gb. SSD drives in my 2011 MacBook Pro. My plan was to install windows 7 on the 2nd drive. I'm new at owning Macs so I have had Windows on main drive using bootcamp but I wanted to speed up my 17" Mac so I maxed out the memory and added the SSD drives. Thinking I could put the 2 operating systems on seperate drives I bought to 2 SSD's. Is there any way to do this. So far I have drawn a blank. Any ideas?

Yes. Just install Windows onto it without using the Boot Camp Assistant to partition it.

You either download drivers from within Boot Camp Assistant and save to USB FAT disk, or you insert and use 10.6.x OS X DVD when in Windows and install and run the SETUP from there.

apart from the MacBook Air this feature is of no use for other Macs right now.
Simply ingnore it (click "I already have the Drivers...) and continue with the installation.
Sorry to say but you need the OSX Install DVD for the BootCamp Driver installation.
The 3.0 version of the BootCamp Drivers is only avaiable on the disc.
Later updates (3.1 and 3.2) can be downloaded from Apples Support website.
Call Apple and ask for a replacement and they usually send you one for a small fee.
And have the Serial-Number of your Mac at hand when calling.
And since the OSX Install DVD can also be vital for maintenance and repair it is best to have one.
The needed BootCamp Drivers are on the OSX Install DVD 1 that came with your Mac.
Insert that disc while in Windows after the Windows installation to install the drivers.

Is there a compatibility issue with the Current USB 3 external Hard drives and MacBook Pro 2011 (USB 2)?

I am currently having bad hangs with my 13" MacBook Pro (2011) which I book 2012 ad a New external Harddrive (WD My Passport Edge) which was given to me as a gift.
Friends of mine told me there is a compatibility issue between the USB 3 cord and the USB outlet of my MacBook Pro.
Although this shouldnt be the case as the box of the Hard drive I got said it was compatible.
I even downloaded the WD Drive Utilities and sometimes whenthe Harddrive is plugged in the Utilities doean't Open but just bleeps in the Applications Dock.
Before I used the Harddrive I read a lot from the WD Manual and went to their site and downloaded a firmware update so I really don't know what the problem is.
What I am afraid of is that I may lose some files if I place them in the external Harddrive.
Can anyone help me with this or should I be asking for a replacement harddrive?
This is my first experience with an external hard drive as I never used one before.

To be honest, I've had back luck with Western Digital drives and I avoid them at all costs. If I were you, I would return the WD drive and look at externals from OWC or MacMall (LaCie, even G-Tech).
That's just my personal opinion, mind you...

I have tried instaling using an external optical drive, but it doesn't work. And I don't have an internal drive because it has been replaced with a HDD. Please help.

I have a new 2.0GHz Intel Core i7 macbook pro and my external firewire drive is causing the computer to lock up. The drive seems to sleep and then never wakes and the laptop locks up. I've had this drive connected to an older 2.0 core duo macbook pro and a 3.0GHz quad core macpro with no issues. It's a ministack v3 drive, 2GBs, fw400+800, sata and usb. Any ideas? And can I stop the drive from going to sleep?

Check with the drive's manufacturer to see if they might have a firmware update for the enclosure; it sounds like the enclosure's firmware isn't properly detecting the FireWire wakeup sequence.
Obviously this could also be a bug with the new MBP's firmware, so it wouldn't hurt to ask the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store; in particular, ask them to show you that the sleep/wakeup sequence on your MBP works with some other FireWire drive.
