MacBook Pro 3.1 boots up freezes then shuts down before sign in screen

I recently upgraded to Yosemite from Mavericks and now my MacBook Pro 3.1 when Iturned on takes me to my login screen (sometimes other times even before the login screen) freezes up, I can't make the mouse cursor move and keyboard does not function then it shuts down and reboots over and over again

A 3.1 MBP is a 2007 15" MBP.  You indicate that you have a retina MBP.  Clarification would be helpful.
Try SMC and NVRAM resets:

Then try a safe boot:

Any change?

  • Replaced Logic Board, RAM, and hard drive connecting wire, but Macbook Pro 15' (Mid 2010) now freezes and shuts down randomly

I have a mid 2010, Macbook Pro '15. Summer of 2012, it kept shutting down and making the three beeping noises, so I took it in for repair. I was told that my Logicboard needed to be replaced, so I replaced it, and took my Macbook abroad with me. Halfway through the summer, the three beeping noises resumed, and since I was abroad, I couldn't use my 90 day warranty and take it back for repair. By the time I returned to the US, my warranty ended, and I was told that the RAM actually needed to be replaced. So I replaced that.
In May of this year, my laptop wouldn't start and instead showed a folder with a question mark. I took it to repair and was told it was the hard drive wire that needed to be replaced, so I replaced that. Less than two weeks after, my Mac began freezing whenever I had a YouTube video or song playing- it made short, staticky sounds and then shut down. Now, it shuts down randomly even when I'm not playing videos or songs, and regardless of if it is running on battery or plugged in. Since I got my hard drive wire replaced, I've also noticed that the laptop takes an incredibly slow time to start up.
The last the Genius Bar technicians looked at my computer when replacing the harddrive wire, they hadn't said anything else was wrong with my laptop.
I've spent almost $1000 total fixing my macbook and am quite sick of going through this over and over again. Can anyone help me know what went wrong this time? (I have no apple care) Thank you in advance.

  • Nokia c3 freezes then shuts down

    Hey,
I've bought a new nokia c3 and I bought an 8gig memory card(Kingston) for it.Everything is working fine at first but then when it started to store up,up to 2gig of it's memory the problems starting to show up.
First: whenever I take a picture, my phone shutdown and in order for me to turn it on again, I have to take the memory card out and turn it on and put the memory card again.
Second: when I go to camera and photos my phone starts to freeze then shuts down.
Third: whenever I use the Bluetooth and send or receive a file it freeze then shuts down.
Fourth: whenever I try to delete something in the memory card my phone freeze then shuts down.
I already upgraded it, but still the same thing happens, is it because of my memory card? Please help me.

Hi I have had my c3 only for a couple of months and it keeps freezing. When it has been switched on for a little while the messages in the conversations get mixed up and the names of contacts don't match up with the messages they have sent, so I have switched it off and back on again and it turns on and is active for about 10 seconds and then freezes again and I have taken the battery and sim card out and left it out and done it again and its frozen exactly the same. Please help! Thank you

Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.

Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility and press the Continue button. After Disk Utility loads select the Macintosh HD entry from the the left side list.  Click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If Disk Utility reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit Disk Utility and return to the main menu.

  • Why does Macbook Pro have gray "curtain"and msg to shut down when playing video online?

    Hi,
I have a MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard v 10.6.8 and have put on all the security updates.
I bought this machine just days after the newest MBP's were released with Lion because I wanted to stay with Snow Leopard
From the very beginning I would have occasional "gray screens" with a message that I'd encounterd a problem and needed to shut down.  It always occured while I was watching a streaming video online (Flash?) but it didn't always happen.  I updated my Flash plugin and that seemed to help.  I use both Safari and FireFox and both are now updated to the latest versions.
I had also noticed via iCleanMemory that my memory availability was very low .....I always have many tabs open in my browsers and have backup software that backs up to online storage running and when I watched a video, it dropped to almost 0 and everything ran slow.  I had 4 GB Ram.
So, I ordered new ram and put that in and now have 8 GB.  Machine runs fast. Love it....except it keeps giving me that veil of gray and the message to shut down.  It happens several times a day now and while usually in conjunction with watching a video clip, it's not always the case.  But I have lots of available memory.  That wasn't the issue.
I found an Apple Support paper relative to needing a video update on some mid 2010 MBP's and downloaded it.  It won't install and says it won't run on my system so that didn't help.
I'm at my wits' end trying to keep this thing running.  Everytime I have to shut it down it means a minimum of 8 min...sometimes more.....before it will restart.  If I try to restart sooner than that, it begins to boot and then just has lines and lines of numbers and code running across it....and often continuous beeping sounds and I have to hold the button down to shut it off again.  If I wait long enough, it does boot back up and sometimes runs fine as long as I'm not watching video clips, a streaming tv show or clicking on a lot of links in web pages.
I don't believe it has shut down when I was doing anything that wasn't web related....i.e. on a browser. And, when I was running with only 4 gb ram, it rarely shut down, just ran very, very slowly.  Now with 8 gb ram it is speedy but doesn't seem to want to keep working!
Anyone have any ideas what I should try next?
    Thanks
    Paula

    Hi Allan,
    Thanks for your reply.
I have been closing iCleanMemory but the shut down (kernel panic) was still happening.  Not sure how to go about uninstalling it as it's one that runs at start-up and dragging it to the trash might not get rid of it completely.  I"ll find it's web site and see if they have any info.
Haven't checked your web link yet (it's late and gotta get to bed) but will do so tomorrow.
I also run Backblaze and DropBox that begin at startup and are constantly updating in the background, iStatMenus and Sharpshooter.
The kernel panics were happening....tho much less frequently.....before i put iClean Memory on.  If I remember right, I installed it just because I had those periodic shut downs and wondered if it was a lack of memory.  Because I then saw that memory was very low all the time, I decided I must need to put more memory in.  And that seems to have made the issue worse while also making the machine work faster for the time it is running.
Now, I've been working on here for a couple of hours and had no problem at all......but I haven't asked it to play any kind of video.  Before I quit for the night, I'll try to watch the last one I tried that caused it to shut down and see if it does it again.
I do appreciate your help as I have just enough knowledge about these things to be dangerous.
    Paula

  • MacBook Pro 15" Unibody 1st Gen Overheat, forced shut down, flickering.

    Hey there,
I'm having some problems with my MacBook Pro. I'll share the details of the computer so it's clear exactly which model I have, and then the symptoms. It is the 2.4Ghz, 2GB 1066Mhz RAM model. It features the nVidia 9600 GT for High Performance mode and nVidia 9400M for Power Saving mode.
When I got the MacBook Pro first, I installed Windows XP on it. When I would play video games or use 3D intensive applications, the screen would go black, if sound was playing a small loop of it would play. The only way to get anything to happen would be to forcibly restart the machine by holding down the power button.
At this time I would also experience flickering on the 9400M under OSX, and I still do.
I called up Apple, and myself and the phone support person concluded that it was poor driver support on Windows causing the problem. As it wasn't the main OS, I was alright with this.
Recently, I have taken to playing some games on OSX as they've become available. But now this forcible restart is occurring. Not infrequently, but rather, minutes into any game.
I have called Apple a couple of times, and even though it's out of warranty they're trying to help and that's great. The problem is they're trying to tell me it's the battery.(The battery is spent)
I don't believe it's the battery, as this precise problem was apparent under Windows under the same situations.
    tl;dr:
I think my MacBook Pro was defective out of the box. Called Apple. Concluded the problem was Windows. About a year later, start using the same games under OSX. Problems that were showing under Windows started showing under OSX. Concluding that it's the laptop. Apple trying to tell me it's the battery, even though this problem was apparent when the laptop & the battery were new.
Has this problem happened to other folks? Any kind of happy endings here?

    Hi Retro Dog
I have recently run into a problem with my Macbook Pro where I will get yellow flickering across my screen. I get this under both OSX and Windows 7 and seems to happen only when my laptop is overheating. I am running a 2.8 core with OSX 10.6.6. I downloaded smcFancontrol which lets me monitor the temperature real time and adjust the fans to a higher speed. It seems when I reach a CPU temperature of 80+ degrees C this problem will occur. As soon as I adjust the fans to a higher speed the flickering goes away. My Macbook does not adjust the fans any higher than 2000 rpm so I am assuming that 80-85 degrees is still acceptable as a running temp.
I am wondering if I might not be headed for some kind of failure at this point.

  • How do I permanently shut off icloud from my macbook pro. Safari will not let me shut down

I have a macbook pro 2008 with operating system Maverick.  Today I was asked to join i cloud.  I do not want to join i cloud.  I just want to keep my computer as it is with the new operating system.  It seems I now joined I cloud and cannot shut down Safari unless i sign up for all of the uses of icloud.  Please advise me how to get out of all of this and just go back to my previous set up.  What can I do to get rid of ICloud and shut down my computer (Safari)?

You can shut off iCloud in System Preferences.
If Safari seems hung, click the Apple icon, then Force Quit. If it says Not Responding next to Safari force quit it.

You can Try resetting NVRAM/PRAM http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379
You can run the Disk Utility> Repair Disk from Recovery ( command R on start)
if that does not sort it I would reinstall OS X

  • I am trying to shut down my MacBook Pro but mail is preventing it from shutting down and it will not allow me to quit mail

Does anyone know of a way to force quit Mail.  It is preventing me from restarting or shutting down my MacBook Pro running Maverick iOS 10.9.
    Thanks.

    itsKeef,
You're having the same problem? Do you ALWAYS have to Force Quit Mail or will it sometimes just Quite when you select Quit? Which model MacBook Pro do you have (e.g., "15-inch Late 2011"), which version of OS X are you running and which version of Mail do you have?

  • My MacBook pro is slow and keeps on randomly shutting down.

I got it in 2011 and its updated. I recently have been using my computer a lot for work and school and as soon as I go on certain apps and sites (ex. Mail, Word, Gmail, Preveiw, ect.) it gets extremly slow and the circle loading sign comes up for a long time. Then it blacks; it doesnt shut down or sleep, but the screen just goes blank. I don't know if it has anything to do with my batery, or some sort of MAC virus, but its driving me crazy.  I am not sure what to do.. any ideas?
I also live in a dorm for college and the internet is shared, my computer always works worse when i am using a internet connection there; could that be a factor?

Back up your documents and everything else important to you. The symptoms you describe may presage an impending disk failure, and you should have backups anyway.
If you suspect the hard disk may be failing, try repairing it with Disk Utility:
Boot OS X Recovery by holding ⌘ and r (two fingers) while you start your Mac. At the Mac OS X Utilities screen, select Disk Utility. Select your startup volume (usually named "Macintosh HD") and click the Repair Disk button. Describe any errors it reports in red.
Depending on the particular error, it may recur even if Disk Utility reports that it has been repaired. If it does you should consider the disk unreliable, and make plans replace it.
When Disk Utility finishes, restart your Mac and test again for operation.
If problems continues to occur please determine if they also occur in "Safe Mode":
Safe Mode or "Safe Boot" is a troubleshooting mode that bypasses all third party system extensions and loads only required system components. Read about it: Starting up in Safe Mode
Starting your Mac in Safe Mode will take longer than usual, graphics will not render smoothly, audio is disabled on some Macs, some networking functions are disabled, and some programs (iTunes for example) may not work at all.
To end Safe Mode restart your Mac normally. Shutdown will take longer as well.
Reply with the results of the above.
