MacBook Pro AVI playback in QT SOLVED!
I've been trying to get the QT to play AVI for a long time, having tested several codecs, i finnally find the necessary ones (it's better if you don't install other codecs in case of conflicts) the codecs are here:

The .avi "container" can hold dozens of different codecs and there is no "one" solution for proper playback (Intel or PowerPC Macs, or even Windows OS's).
My "solution"? I don't download anything named with a 15 year old file extension (like.avi).
Third party codecs are just that. And QuickTime will not support codecs that do not conform to some types of Industry standards.

Network Issues with Macbook Pro Retina will Apple Router solve issues?
Hi, I just purchased a Macbook Pro Retina 15" and have been having major WIFI/Internet issues. Slow connections, constant spinwheel of death, half loading pages if the website has a lot of images (Facebook, etc). Sometimes I have to wait a fair bit of time and they may eventually load, or I'll have to close the browser and reload the page.
In the area I live in, Bell offers only Fibe 5.1 (802.11 g/b) at this time. I wondered if I purchased a separate router with an 802.11n connection (and disabled the router on the 2Wire modem from Bell), would this solve my issues or is Fibe 5.1 just unable to handle the new "n" technology/speed. I'd like to utilize this computer the way it was meant to be used, but the internet connection that I have leaves much to be desired. Bell won't be upgrading in my area for at least 6-12 months from what they tell me and I refuse to switch to Robbers (I mean Rogers).I hate to go into a long rant but you may be able to fix your problem by just changing the channel on your 2wire router from ma Bell. They all come with the channel set to a default setting of channel 6 change it to 10. If you are in a high traffic area and they are all set on six you see where this is going. I have a 2 Wire in a high traffic area and I changed mine and it worked like a charm.

Apple TV & Macbook Pro: DVD playback on Macbook, Can it be watched through Apple TV?
If I play a DVD on my Macbook Pro, is there a way that I can watch this through my Apple TV. I'd like to be able to watch some things on a larger screen. Is there a way to do this through iTunes? Other ideas?
No. All content needs to be in iTunes to stream to ATV.

Macbook Pro - SD Card Reader Issues Solved!
I recently purchased a gently used, early 2011 MBP. I've had it for a few months, but I did not try using the SD card reader until last week... so much for kicking the tires. Long story short, the darn thing did not recognize or mount one single SD card out of a handful of cards, and at least 3 different card manufacturers all used with my Canon DSLR. I searched the net trying to find a solution and tried everything from sticking the card in at a some strange and ridiculous slant to shutting the computer down three different ways and resetting the System Management Controller (SMC); nothing worked. So today I spent 25 minutes or so chatting with an apple care specialist and they (Jim the apple care guru) finally came up with a solution, even though I'm sure neither one of us knows exactly why it worked. So here goes...
Put your SD card in a external card reader, once it's mounted go to disk utilities and reformat (erase) the drive to Mac OS Extended. Take it out of your external reader and put it in the built-in reader on your Mac. Now, of course, it will no longer work in your camera or most other devices so you'll have to format it again in your device of choice. However, here's the kicker... once I did l all of that and took some quick pics, I put it back in my MBP and it popped right up even after a reboot. But wait there's more.... I then put the SD card in my wife's work laptop (PC running Win8) and played with the files for a bit, then stuck it back in the Mac and it still recognized it. So there goes the "windows screws up the formatting myth).
So naturally I assumed that I would be forced to go through this double formatting process for all of my SD cards (and I have a lot), but then it happened! A Christmas miracle in October. I tried a second card, and then a third and a fourth and a fifth, etc... AND now they ALL pop up just like they should. Without reformatting or any other humanly changed processes. Yep... There you have it, it makes no sense. But it works ;)
Somehow formatting just one card in the card reader "woke up" the whole process, almost like my MBP was like, hmmm I was wondering what you kept sticking inside that's slot of mine...
Hope this helps someone. Sorry for the rant :)Anyone else with card reader issues should read this page. Just because your card reader doesn't appear to be working or has mysteriously dropped off your system doesn't necessarily mean a logic board replacement. I've repaired several portables over the years that had been quoted for costly logic board replacements, when in fact the failures were relatively easy to resolve once you understood the real problem.
It's common belief a PRAM or SMC reset should fix all hardware glitches but sometimes it just doesn't go deep enough, as I found out with my 2011 MBP. Problem with Digital Cinema Desktop Preview on Macbook Pro
I hava a Macbook Pro 2.2 GHz with 2 GB RAM. I would like to use a connected 24"-Display for preview of my HD-Material (ProRes and HDV). Unfortunately I am not getting my Macbook Pro to playback all frames. Whend Digital Cinema Desktop Preview is activated, there are only still frames displayed. No smooth playing back neither in the canvas window nor the 24" display. I have External Video -> All Frames checked.
Does the Macbook Pro 2.2 not meet the specs for this feature?
Or is it a problem with Leopard? Is anyone with Tiger able using Digital Cinema Desktop Preview with succes?

JoergSo are you saying that the DVI output on my MacBook Pro IS true HD resolution and not a proxy like the canvas?
What I am saying is that the video feed coming out of the DVI port is YUV. Computer monitors take that YUV information and convert it to RGB for displaying purposes. So if you connect an Apple monitor to the DVI port, and then use that for Digital Cinema Preview, you are seeing a converted proxie image. The MXO takes the actual YUV footage and outputs that to the Apple display as YUV, and therefore presents full quality broadcast colors. And it does it pixel for pixel...the 23" display is 1920x1200, so there are thin black lines on the top and bottom.
AND the MXO software has a proc amp for adjusting color bars, and a BLUE ONLY option for proper monitor calibration. THis really is an amazing little box.
I'm using a Dell ultrasharp 20" that looks very good that way; I just didn't think it was HD.
It is, but it is a converted RGB image...and since it is 20", it isn't pixel for pixel (well, it would be for 720p, not 1080), and if it isn't pixel for pixel, then it is a converted image. Not suitable for color correction.

Yup...sure can. It will look pretty good too. But it being a consumer set, and again having a YUV>RGB converted image, it won't look as good as it could. The MXO would feed it a proper YUV signal, as would an Decklink HDP (but you need a decklink card with SDI out for that).

Am I right in assuming that OpenCL is not working with Premiere Pro CC and OS X Mountain Lion?
On my MacBook Pro, Mercury Playback Engine GPU performance is much better in software only mode with OpenCL GPU acceleration turned off.
I had this same problem with Mac OS Lion and that was eventually fixed. Now the issue has cropped up again.
Is OpenCL GPU acceleration working for anyone with Mountain Lion on a MacBook Pro?OpenCL GPU hardware acceleration works great on my 2012 15" MacBook Pro under 10.8.4 using CS6, but I haven't moved to CC yet. It would be strange for it to be supported in CS6 and not CC.
I don't think I even edited the text file, because I think the 650M was already on the list. Did you update the drivers? -

Reason for Macbook Pro super slow download speeds, when all other Apple devices in the house are downloading correctly. I am not attempting to use multiple devices at the same time. What could be the problem with the Macbook Pro?

Every week I have to restore the macbook pro system

Lately my macbook pro is having some problems that are bothering me a lot.
After some use it simply will not boot and I have to restore the system by time machine. But before that happens, the boot is extremely slow, it does not leave the apple gray screen, then rebooting the computer by the recovery disk, several problems are presented during the disk check.
The last time I had the problem, the computer just was not mount the disk in any way, I had to erase the disk and restore the system from time machine. I've replaced the HD, reset PRAM, SMC, repair disk permissions, but nothing solved the problem.
Another problem that is occurring is that the system reports different values for the free disk space, on the table it reports a value, in the disk utility is informed another value, always lower, as if the table it reports the value of 502.33 GB of free space, in disk utility value reported is 498.20 GB. After performing the system restore, the computer works fine for about a week, and then presents the problems again.
The computer only has these problems with the Lion, the snow leopard operation is perfect, but as I paid $ 30.00 by the system, I wish to use it, but if the problems continue I think I will downgrade to the snow leopard.
Has anyone had the same problems with the Lion and the macbook pro?
Any suggestions to solve these problems without having to go back to the snow leopard?

I just use the Mac OS, I've done a scan with virusbarrier (all updated virus definitions) and no virus was found. My software is all original, and most were purchased from the App Store.
I bought this macbook new, sealed box, and always had the feeling that something was wrong with it. After 8 months of purchase, the original HD had problems. I took the computer to an Apple authorized service center, they said the HD was damaged and replaced under warranty. This happened exactly two years ago. After replacing the HD the computer works normally until the installation of the Lion, I can't say if it was coincidence or not, but it's really weird problems start after installing the Lion. Another strange problem on my computer since I bought it, is that the battery reduces the percentage of load even with the connected MagSafe power.
I don't understand what's happening with my computer.

Lightroom 5 filling up my Macbook Pro
I have been in the phone from Oslo, Norway today with some support guy in India for 30 minutes after 5 minutes of waiting and two guys that could not help before him. The line was horrible, he never called back as he promised to and he did not send the e-mail he promised to send. This is NOT taking care of your customers and very annoying! I want to know why Lightroom 5 is taking up 260 GB of space on my Macbook Pro and how I can solve this. I am a CC client and a professional photographer.
I doubt something is "wrong" in the sense that I'm pretty sure Lightroom is doing what it is supposed to be doing.
You have a number of options here.
One is to optimize the catalog (File->Optimize Catalog) which will (possibly) cause the catalog file to take up less space.
Another is to go to Catalog settings and change the size of the previews you are creating. This will also cause the previews to take up less space. (In fact, you could delete all the existing previews, and when Lightroom regenerates them, they will be smaller)
You could have a bigger hard drive installed. And lastly, as I mentioned, you could place one or more catalogs on another drive. I know you don't want to do this, I mention it again just for completeness. It seems to me to be the easiest solution. But it seems to me that if you don't like this option, eventually you will run out of space on your existing hard disk and then ... um ... we're back at putting catalogs on another drive. -
How to solve the choppy audio playback in Macbook Pro 2011 ?

I bought used 2011 Macbook Pro 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5 and ugrade its RAM to 16GB and OS to Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4. It had very choppy audio with the last version of the OS and 4 GB RAM as well. Now audios in each and every player/ browser is completely choppy.
Does Apple know about this issue ?
Is there a permanant solution for this problem ?

The OSX will use as much RAM as it needs and is available for the given situation. 16 GB RAM will not be 'too much' in any circumstance.

An SSD will allow for faster processing. Whether the costis worth for its benefits it is for you to decide. It will be able to swap data into the RAM faster but that does not make the RAM 'more effective'. As I said, the OSX governs RAM usage as required.
Or will my CPU still be hindering everything and I should just accept I wasted some money?
The CPU does not 'hinder' anything. It simply processes the data that is sent to it by the OSX within it specification limits. I am not certain that I understand your thinking here.
Basically: is it worth trying to upgrade & is it possible to get more out of my 16 GB RAM
That decision is yours based on what you feel you need and your bank account.

New Macbook pro (top of range) DIVX playback is terrible??

Just brought my 1st ever Mac and went for the top end MacBook Pro.
I have been trying to playback my DIVX files and so far have not got anything to play.
I have tried installing both DIVX player and Perian but both have the same effect.
I get pixilated video and the audio pops and cracks to the point you cannot even plug headphones in.
I installed VideoSpec which says that everything I need is installed so have no idea why this MacBook that plays the 1080 videos from my video camera without any issue cannot playback the bog standard divx videos that my crappy netbook plays without any problems.
If I install VLC I get some error about the audio being wrong and it asks if I want to repair it but this also does nothing. I use VLC on my PC which does not complain playing the same files.
Also I have tried a few MKV files which also are not playing back as expected.
Any help would be most welcomed as if I cannot get this lovely Mac to do what to me is the most simple of tasks I will be taking it back.

It could be a 'difficult' form of Matroska file. FYI Matroska is just a container like MOV or AVI, and some mkv have the video encoded with Real Video Codec (RV9 RV10). Perian+QT can't decode this, but VLC will play .mkv files just fine on OS X, as long as they don't use H.264!
It's a bit of a lottery until Matroska decide to support the Apple platform. I have found this:

But there may be another workaround: 1. Get Info the mkv file
2. Change to extension to wmv. Save as wmv and that could work better.
