I just installed it. My fan has been running at 2000rpm for the past 15 minutes, but still no change. Is there something else I should be doing?
If resetting the SMU does not work, you should follow clintonfrombirmingham's EXCELLENT advice.

  • New MacBook Pro, fan goes crazy on iPhoto screen saver

I just got a new 15in MacBook Pro (running Lion of course) with the following specs:
       - 8 gigs RAM
       - 2.2 GHz
       - 500 gig 7200 hard drive
I had my screen saver set to cycle randomly through 350 pictures from my wedding. Within 1 minute of the screensaver activating, my fan kicks in full speed. When I go into Activity Monitor (while the fan is still going nuts) no processes are using more than 7% CPU. Within a couple of minutes of resuming work, the screen saver dies down and everything is fine.
Does anyone know why this is happening? I'm a programmer and even having multiple applications in active use, the fan doesn't kick on. If I switch to Arabesque screen saver, the fan doesn't act crazy. I suppose it's not a big deal to use a different screen saver but there's no logical reason for my fan to go insane when all it's doing is cycling through some pictures.
I did try the steps to reset the SMC but it did not seem to solve the issue.
    Any help appreciated!

You were right One of my other iPhoto albums must have corrupted pictures because I went to a backup that contained only the wedding pictures and everything is fine. Always nice when the answer happens to be something simple!
    Thanks!!

  • Macbook pro Fan going Nuts

My late 2011 macbook pro's (2.8 Ghz. 8 GB Ram) fan has being going crazy whenever i watch videos, or play games. Should i take it into the apple store?
    Help?
    Thanks

Your fans should ramp up as the temps of the sensors inside your MacBook Pro go up.
Download the 14-day free trial of iStat Menus 4 and take a look at the fan speeds and the temps. Report them back here. Playing videos and gaming is going to heat up your MBP and the fans should run high as the heat builds up - that's a good thing.

  • MacBook Pro fan goes very loud

This happens when I'm playing CS:GO (Countestrike Global Offense).
I don't have this when playing other games (League of Legends, Left 4 Dead 2). I have a Notepal X3 cooler aswell to cool it down.
    I have a
    MacBook Pro 13 inch,
    2.9 GHz Intel Core i7,
    8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Video: Intel HD Graphics 4000 1024 MB
650 GB of 750 GB Free Space and I'm running the new OSX Mavericks.

    Install istat menus:
    http://bjango.com/mac/istatmenus/
When your MBP gets hot, open istat menus and post an image of the output for inspection.  If temperatures are approaching 100°c, then there MAY be a cause for concern.  Be aware that thermal shutdown will occur before the MBP self destructs.
    Ciao.

  • Why does my MacBook Pro fan go into overdrive when the laptop is not even warm?

The fan on my MacBook Pro is going into overdrive without any form of heat coming from the laptop. It causes the computer to be really slow as though there's a delay on the cursor, then makes it crash. It also disconnects me from the internet and won't reconnect without a restart. Had this trouble for a few months but it stopped for roughly four months without giving any clue as to what I had done to stop it, but has now restarted again out of nowhere.
I have tried an SMC reset countless times and it makes no difference. Operating system is up to date.

Either on Microsoft word or on FB and maybe some online editiing.. I have installed Istat and waiting for it to occur again so i can measure the heat and CPU usage.. any idea as to why this is happening??

  • My Macbook Pro is going very slow

For some reason my Macbook Pro is going verryy slow. I don't think I have malware or viruses. I ran scans with Anti-Malware-Bytes and am now downloading Sophos. Now for how it goes slow - Say if I play a game.. lets take runescape for instance.. it'll be fine for about 5 minutes then my mouse will start lagging and just the whole computer will. Starting applications, typing.. my letters will come up 3 seconds after I press a key.. I can run firefox (only firefox) and only have 1-3 tabs up without it lagging. If I have youtube up it will lag from time to time too. Netflix goes slow and doesn't play right.
One thing I have noticed is near the top of the laptop ( when it is opened, where it bends to open) it gets very hot. VERY hot. Which ended up making me think why I don't hear a fan, so now I'm thinking its very slow because the fan is not running. I don't know if it is because the fan is not running or if the fan is not running at all. It might just be too quiet for me to hear. Any help would be amazing please. I want to get my old laptop back lol

how would I go about getting it off completly?
I've no idea. If it doesn't come with an uninstall script or app, then it's the developer of the application which should answer that.
what about Sophos? Should I take that off too?
Yes. The bottom line is this. Many anti-virus tools or optimisers install low-level software (eg, kernel extensions, or kexts) which interfere with, or modify the way in which low-level functions of the operating system work. Consequently, they cause problems; to troubleshoot those problems, you need to remove this software.
(Btw, make sure you've applied Apple's Java updates and turned off Java in all your browsers.)

  • Macbook Pro Fan Speed

Hi. I was having some trouble with my temperature of my MBP, but I somewhat solved it using Temperature Monitor and smcFanControl. I turned the fanspeed to Higher RPM in the smcfancontrol menu, and my temperatures are down from ~95 celcius to ~65 celcius (when playing Minecraft / other extensive tasks.)
Now, I would like to bring them down more (should I?) because I feel 65 c - 70 c is still really high...
So, my only question is: In smcFanControl, the Higher RPM setting is 4000 RPM, should I change that to 5000 RPM? I know it would help, but, can the fans handle that?
    Thanks in advance
Could 70c (max) shorten it's lifespan?
(sorry I just am extremely extremely paranoid)

I am seeing a lot of negative talk about third-party software to control fans:
    Istat menu 5 is good.
It conforms to apple's SMC; this means that it will never allow the fans to go slower than what SMC is asking, thus your computer will be safe using this software.
In contrast I have a Macbook Pro fan controller for bootcamping Windows 7 called MacFanx64.exe (64 bit) that requires you to understand command prompt.
It's nothing difficult, you just need to make sure that you enter parameters properly.
The only way I see one of these damaging any hardware components would be if you accidently told the fan to spin faster than the max speed.
I would agree that for OS X you aren't going to really need this because the engineering on the SMC isn't terrible, but if you happen to have SMC screw up like it sounds like you had, there's no way to know it unless you feel it getting really hot like that which I'm sure isn't great for your MBP.
Therefore having a monitor system is helpful because you can see the temperatures constantly.
Now for Windows 7 bootcamp it's a whole different story.
There is something wrong with the drivers that control SMC for bootcamp because the computer will get hot fast even in idle.
I was marking temperatures around 60-70 C just in idle - the fans still stay at 2000 rpm.
If someone finds something better than MacFan for Windows 7 bootcamp let me know.
Moral of the story, if you pick a good third-party application you're not going to harm your computer.
Think of it like a second line of defense.
Last but not least, if you're still having this problem do an SMC reset.
Apple has instructions on how to do it, just note that you need to pay attention to whether your MBP has a removable battery or not when doing SMC reset.
    Cheers

  • Macbook pro fan running slow

macbook pro fan is running slow and hot.  it fluctuates between 212 and 375 rpms.  heat rises up to 104c.  do i need to replace the fan?

Before I suggest advice, I urge you to keep your machine under 160F at all times. I don't want to sound like an alarmist, but you can seriously damage your machine with that kind of use. Some solders melt at 225F, weaken at 190F.
You may have to replace the fan - or you may need to clean the inside of your machine and fan. It's hard to tell without inspecting your machine.
Or you may find that you need to get a different browser, and become more aware of temperature; laptop machines are much more sensitive to termperature issues than desktop Macs. Some day, you'll thank me for that advice.

  • My macbook pro is going slow lately

My macbook pro is going slow lately, it takes longer time to just open a finder window or a simple photo or word document or pdf document. Everything in general goes slower than before.
I don´t know what to do to fix this and have the macbook pro run as it used to before.
    Thank you

  • What is causing my Macbook Pro fan to run constantly?

Hello. Recently my Macbook Pro fan has begun to run constantly at high power. I've checked the activity monitor and even when there is little RAM or CPU this occurs. I am wondering if the issue is the hard drive because the I am seeing spikes in disk activity at random times even when I am not using the hard drive. The computer is actually heating up when the fans are on at full power, so this also leads me to believe it could be the hard drive. I have already tried resetting the system management controller. Any other ideas? What should I do about this?
    Thanks a lot.

Try raising the the the machine with wood, or , plastic botttle caps t get it up an inch or so, that way there is more air flow under the MBP to help with the air flow to help keep the cooling more een.  Hope this helps.

  • Mainstage 2.1 makes my Macbook Pro fans run full bore.

Upgraded to V. 2.1 and Snow Leopard. Now my Macbook Pro fan kicks in at full blast whenever I play any patches or run backing tracks. Cpu hit looks low and memory usage is average. This never happened before. Any ideas as to what's happening?

My MBP fans have always run at full capacity when using MS 1, 2 or 2.1. They start out running normally but then start to rev up after a couple of minutes. You could try running some fan control software to manually adjust your fan thresholds but ultimately, does it really matter if the fans are running hard? Seems to me that they're running hard because they need to....MS is still very hard on system resources even if the meters say otherwise. It's the only app I run that causes the fans to run flat-out.

  • My MacBook Pro fan runs while sleeping

My MacBook Pro fan runs constantly, even while sleeping.
The problem started about 2-3 months ago, but was pretty rare. When I noticed the problem, I would restart the computer and it would stop for 1-2 weeks. More recently it has become more constant, and now it always has the fan running when it's sleeping.
Any ideas on what I should do? Thanks!

Mine too. If you're worried you might like to try a laptop cooler like one of these:
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=sr_kk_2?rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Alaptop+cooling+pad&keywor ds=laptop+cooling+pad&ie=UTF8&qid=1344763538
Not sure how well they'd work on a Macbook as there aren't any vents on the underside but it couldn't hurt and they're quite cheep.

  • My Macbook Pro fan

My Macbook Pro fan is always running and slows don't my computer, What's the issue and is there various ways to try and solve the issue?

    Hey Unknownflavour,
There an be a few different reasons why your fans are running. I'd read up on the function of your MacBook Pro's fans in the following document:

  • Since upgrading to Yosemite my macbook pro keeps going to sleep if I am not using it. I want it to stay on as I leave it doing things overnight etc. It was fine before the upgrade and I have all the system preference set to "never turn off"

Since upgrading to Yosemite my macbook pro keeps going to sleep if I am not using it. I want it to stay on as I leave it doing things overnight (cd's  / recording etc. It was fine before the upgrade and I have all the system preference set to "never turn off" - Help !!!

Good advice from Linc Davis that should sort out your query i think...
However you dont want to set your MBP to never go to sleep...
    Adjust reasonable sleep settings...
And the download an APP called caffiene...
When you click it you can have your MBP never go to sleep with a single click of your menu bar... and with another click it can go to sleep normally to maintain the laptop...
Simply click the cup... To toggle never sleep/sleep
