My MacBook Pro has frozen mid restore, I can't even shut down. Please advise.
My MacBook Pro has frozen mid restore, I can't even shut down. It has been like this for a few days now. Please help!
Press and hold down the power button until the system Turns Off. Then try to start it again.
I suspect you have some type of hardware problem. As you didn't mention why you were doing a restore I suspect it was from a system crash of some type. What caused that crash, if there was one, is the reason the system has now Hung again trying to restore it. -
MacBook pro only lasts a few minutes on battery and then shuts down!
elgordo8251 wrote:
How long do these batteries usually last?
It varies. Some do not even last 1 year but others 4+ years.
Apple provides only 1year warranty.
Best. -
My MBP will not lot start up. It chimes on but will not load up the OS. Any Ideas on how to reboot, btw i do not have the OS Disc.
The System DVDs that originally came w/your MBP has the troubleshooting tools. Suggest that you find them.
Do you have any 3rd party utility DVDs? If so, they may work. DW would be your best choice. Does wonders.
You can get replacement System Install & Restore CD/DVDs from Apple's Customer Support - in the US, (800) 767-2775 - for a nominal S&H fee. You'll need to have the model and/or serial number of your Mac available.
If you're not in the US, you may need to go through the regional Apple Store that serves your location to find the contact number. Here's a list of links to all of those - http://store.apple.com/Catalog/US/Images/intlstoreroutingpage.html Another resource: International Support Phone #s. -
Macbook pro random shutdown "are you sure you want to shut down?"
Firstly, I'm asking this on behalf of my boyfriend who would ask himself if his computer were working!
His MacBook Pro 2.2GHZ new since July07 has just now, when started up, started displaying the shutdown message "are you sure you want to shut down?" and then shutting down anyway. Without being asked or prompted.
This has happened everytime it has been switched on after a couple of minutes it will just do it over again. It is fully charged.
Absolutely no idea what to do other than to take it down to the Mac Store and get it looked at.
If anyone has any help or advice it would be greatly appreciated,
thanks in advance. CharlieOk thought i had this fixed myself, i put it down to over heating as it was just acting normally for the last couple of hours but having just turned it off and started shutting everything down for the night it turned itself on!
I think i solved this by shutting the laptop but this has never happened before. I really hope someone can help, I've googled the problem to no avail and this is pretty much my last hope.
Thanks again

MacBook Pro stuck in sleep mode: can't restart or shut down, black screen
I'm running the latest version of Snow Leopard on my mid-2009 MacBook Pro Unibody. After installing the latest Software Update, including a Firmware update for my SuperDrive, the following problem has occurred, for the very first time:
I closed the lid of my laptop for the night, as I do routinely every night, thus putting my MBP to sleep. I leave the various apps open, usually Firefox, iTunes and Entourage. The next morning my MBP felt hot and the screen remained black... it would not change. After repeatedly trying and failing to clear the black screen and bring my apps up, I held the power button down to do a complete Shut Down. My system turned off, but did not do an actual Shut Down. When I press the power button to turn it on, it comes right back into sleep mode with the screen remaining black. I cannot seem to force either a Shut Down or a Restart. I unplugged all peripherals and the power cord, let my MBP cool down completely--for a couple of hours-- and tried everything again. Still no change: I'm stuck in sleep mode with a black screen. I've also tried resetting the PRAM and the SMC, but neither works, probably because I'm not coming from a Shut Down. Is anybody else having this problem? Anyone have any suggestions? I think the problem must be somehow related to the latest update, but whatever it is, I'd like to resolve it.
Thanks in advance for any help.I can't get into my system to see my update version, but I'm certain I'm running the most up-to-date version of Snow Leopard and all other latest updates applicable to my mid-2009 MBP, as I run Software Update routinely. I thoroughly completed all update installations, including the SuperDrive Firmware update, followed all instructions meticulously, including rebooting, and actually used my system for at least one full day without any problems. I'd even recently repaired all permissions. Everything was "humming" along very well. This problem came totally out of the blue. Because the screen is black, I can't actually see what's on it; however, I've put my MBP to sleep every night by closing the lid and it awakens in the morning when I raise the lid. This time the sleep light indicator is on, but nothing happens when I lift the lid, touch the track pad or a key. If I hold the power button down briefly, the sleep light goes out, but when I press the power button again, the light comes right back on. If I depress the power button for several seconds, to initiate a shutdown or restart, it simply shuts off the fan and refuses to completely shut down. This is evidenced by the fact that depressing the power button to start up brings the sleep light on very quickly. I can tell by the way the system sounds that it is on behind the blackened screen. Sorry I can't get you the update versions.

My macbook pro freezes in safari or google chrome or just shuts down all together
My MacBook Pro freezes constantly when using Safari or Google Chrome. I have to reset to continue with anything.
It happens more often when using Java to play games and sometimes just closes the browser.I don't know if we are experiencing the same problem, but this is what I did and it seemed to work for me so far.
Before anything I had to hard restart my laptop. hold power button until off then turn back on.
In Finder click on Go, then click Go to Folder. in the dialogue box type
/var/db/crls
In that folder there are two files that you need to move to the trash
crlcache.db
ocspcache.db
You will need to type in your password to move these to the trash.
Restart your computer and then Empty the Trash. It is very important that you empty the trash afterwards. I forgot to do this the first time and I had to restart the whole process. It has been a few days and I have been without any problems.
I am not claiming this process to be my own, I found it on another discussion thread and it worked for me. I don't have a link to it because I had to use someone else's computer and had no luck trying to find it again. This is the procedure I followed, I do remember it well and I wrote down the steps because I had to do it twice and got tired of combing through all of the websites I have searched looking for a fix to my problem. Hopefully this helps, and try it at your own risk of course.
Let me know if you try it and it works or not, good luck. -

I'm not sure what's going on with my Mac. It was turning on fine a little slow but I charged it on the plane today and went to go use it and it takes forever to load and right when it finally does it turns off.
Start with SMC and PRAM resets:

MacBook is running very slowly and keeps shutting down
My computer is painfully slow and keeps telling me that my Finder has paused. It often does this when I have multiple web pages open or when I'm using more than one application. I only use Office, Preview and Firefox or Safari - depending on which is faster that day so it's limited what I can do. It also regularly brings down a dark screen over the top of whatever I'm doing telling me to shut off my computer. There is no obvious pattern to it but sometimes it happens repeatedly so I can't use my Mac at all. I thought it might be a memory issue, but that is listed as OK. I read elsewhere that it could be that I need to update my software so I did this and deleted the cookies but there is no difference. Can anyone suggest what I can do to stop this happening?
Battery Health: Replace Now
Do what it says.
Several well-known troublemakers exist with that Mac but it is premature to do anything else until you fix its hardware.
Back up your Mac, if you have not already done so. To learn how to do that read Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac.
Then, fix your hardware. -

New iPod Nano 6th generation just got it going today. It is fully charged but shuts off a few seconds into a song, what do I do?
I received mine yesterday as replacement for 1st generation and yes I had exactly the same problem.
I don't think it is anything to do with headphone plug [jack].
I played around with the settings and have just managed to listen to three hours without problem.
Music settings; shake to shuttle off, sound check off, double click - play/pause, audio cross fade and group compilation on. Can't be all these but trial and error as to which one - unfortunately it came without instructions.
The only other thing was that I had it in pocket while i was moving whereas yesterday I was sat at desk with nano at rest.

My MacBook Pro doesn't start; in safe mode <shift CMD V> the message "disk0s2: media is not present" is written on the screen repeatedly but the MacBook doesn't start. Do you have any ideas of why this should be or what I should do to resolve this? Thanks Eamonn
Thanks for these suggestions: I have tried safe mode re-starts (both "verbose" and simple "shift" + power) to no avail. I get the error message "disk0s2: media is not present". Following this I inserted the installation disc and from there ran disc utility. The "Verify Disk" indicated an error " invalid sibling link" which it could not repair.
I also tried to completely re-format/erase the disk, but again got an error message "disk object invalid or unable to serialize".
Any ideas of what could be causing this or the best solution? I fear I am fast running out of options.
