Macbook Pro very dim screen + inverted colors.

I picked up a 2006 Macbook Pro that was pretty beat up from a friend (probly dropped a few times.) The Macbook runs alright but I am having a few problems with the screen that I just can't seem to find an explanation for.
First, the screen is very dim. Not dark, as if the backlight was burned out, but dimmer than the lowest brightness setting on my newer Macbook. This is with the brightness set to the highest setting, it will get dimmer if I use keyboard key to adjust the brightness.
Also, the colors are inverted. Now I have triple checked the Universal Access settings and the colors are inverted when the setting is set for normal colors and the colors return to normal(although still dim) when the inverted colors option is selected.
As far as troubleshooting, I have hooked the computer up to an external monitor and it displays at the correct brightness and color settings. So, while the colors or normal on the external monitor they are inverted on the macbook.
I can provide pictures if needed, and can work my way around the inside of the macbook if need be. Any suggestions or ideas are greatly appreciated!

Thanks for the response!
I tried resetting the PRAM like you listed but that had no effect. I bought a new LCD inverter for my macbook pro to see if that could possibly fix the brightness problem, but the problem still persisted.
The previous owner had mentioned something of a overheating problem. I noticed nothing melted/browned on the logic board and all the cables seemed to be fine. I reseated all the connections to the LCD screen and the computer still booted with the same problems. I have not noticed any excessive heat problems with the computer since I have had it.
Also note, when the computer begins to boot and displays a white screen with an apple, it is just as dim as when the computer is running. Leading me to believe it is a hardware problem(I have also reinstalled the OS recently).
Tilting the screen to different angles and putting pressure on different parts of the back of the LCD does not make any differences either.
Thanks again for the input.

  • Macbook pro reboot white screen

I had my computer plugged in and left it for 6 hours.  My Macbook pro went to screen saver mode.  I came back, hit the space bar and the circle spun and spun so I hit the power button.  A minute later I reboot the computer.  The screen came on and nothing else.  I waited and waited.  Nothing!  When I barely touch the power button it turns off instantly.  I hit the power button again to turn it on and same thing.  Power light comes on very bright then dims and then blinks and goes out.  When I hold the power button for a long time I here the power up sound and then nothing.  What can I do?

  • Tiny crack in Macbook Pro 13 inch screen?

There's this tiny v-shaped crack in my macbook pro 13 inch screen. Inside the v shaped crack it's cloudy and i can't see the screen clearly through the v shape. The crack itself is rainbow colored and at first I thought it was water or something. But it didn't come off. This is about a three week old macbook pro and I haven't dropped it, slammed the cover, or anything. I've been so careful. I just noticed it a few minutes ago. I was doing stuff on my laptop, and my eyes wandered.. To the little crack. What could it be? Will Apple Care cover this? I swear I didn't do anything to it.

Apple may class this as accidental damage, whether it was or not as it could be hard to prove. However, it won't hurt you to take it into Apple or phone them up to see if they can do anything, especially if you've only had it a week.

  • I dropped my macbook pro and the screen is broken can i still use it with an external monitor? Or can I or how do I transfer hard drive files to my mac mini?

I dropped my 17" macbook pro and the screen is broken. Can I still use it with an external monitor? When I plugged it into a monitor I had used it with before, I'm not able to see anything on the macbook screen to control it. It came on but I just got the blue screen with nothing else after typing in my password. (Didn't see the password form just assumed it was there somewhere and it did go from space to blue screen but no desktop icons, files, dock strip at top or anything else, just blank blue screen) so I can't access the system preferences.
Or can I / or how do I, transfer hard drive files to my mac mini? If not salvageable as is can I pull out the hard drive and make it an external harddrive? In otherwords is anything salvageable? It seems it's coming on I just can't access anything. BTW I was told it would cost aprox $1000 to replace the screen! I paid almost $4000 for this thing and it was running great - makes me sick to lose it!

I'd like to promise you that everything will be fine if you just get the monitor going - but it's hard to know what the hardware damage might be. It might be the monitor, or the damage might be greater.
Your best solution would be visit your local Apple Store and let them know what your situation is. They have access to diagnostics you don't, and they might be able to the best way to save your data and keep you computing. It's still not covered, but they can tell you what your current options are.
Um, you might consider investing in a backup drive.
And there other repair options, too. Powerbook Medic http://www.powerbookmedic.com/xcart1/pages.php?pageid=67 offers reliable repairs, and quotes prices well under Apple's.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
If you have the cable, just connect it to both and the desktop will show up on the external display. Then, you can select different modes, changing arrangement in System Preferences > Displays > Arrangement, or using shortcuts > http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5019

You can try using Screen Sharing in the Sharing preferences. Or try a third-party utility such as ScreenRecycler.

  • NEW Macbook Pro anti-glare screen choice

    Hi,
I did not see the NEW Macbook Pro anti-glare screen choice.
Did Apple Stop offering the anti-glare screen option on the NEW 2013 Laptops?

If you look at the specifications for the 15" non-retina MBPs, you will note that anti-glare option is available.
    Ciao.

  • MacBook Pro and Samsung screen compatibility

    Hi there
    I have a 13" MacBook Pro 7,1, screen resolution 1280 x 800.  I also have a Sony HDVD camera [HDR-SR11E].
I am thinking of buying a Samsung monitor for ease of video and picture editing -- SAMSUNG 2333HD, which has a 23-inch widescreen display; 16:9 Aspect Ratio; 1920 x 1080 Resolution; 300 cd/m2 Brightness.
Apparently it has "two HDMi sockets, a DVI input and a VGA entry"
Is the aspect ratio of the Samsung compatible with my Mac and do I have to purchase any extra peripherals to make these pieces of equipment work together?
Thanks for any clear, simple help anyone can give

    There are two different models.

So i connected it Through external monitor via mini display to VGA cable. I can see everything on external monitor. My display of Mac needs to change? How much it cost ?? I found so many forum discussion said that if nvedia card is faulty then its happen...let me know suggestions...I given it to apple care service station n they r telling yr display needs to change its cost me a lot.. I can't afford. And can't spend that much for 3 yr old version as new versions of macbook pro is cost vice reasonable.. can I have any suggestion?

If running 10.7 or later hold down Command-R at Startup.
    This should invoke recovery Mode.
    Choose Disk Utility.
Select your Hard drive. Inspect the SMART Status in the lower right of the window for "Verified".
Select the Mac OS X Volume (originally Macintosh HD) click (Repair Disk)
If errors, run again until it comes clean or gets stuck.
    Report any error messages.

  • I1 DISPLAY PRO and DISPLAY MACBOOK PRO 15 " GLOSSY SCREEN

    "Ciao" to all.
I recently  i bought a macbook pro 15 "glossy screen. Would like to try to calibrate the monitor with a i1 DISPLAY PRO produced by X-Rite. Some of you have already tried? with what result?
    Many thanks for the responses.

I talked to AppleCare; they referred me to Customer Service to arrange a return of the MBP and shipment of a new replacement. They said since it was a defect out of the box not to repair it, just go for a replacement.
Sounds good in the long run, but being without it for a few days will be painful!
