MacBook start up disk help needed

What is the start up disk on a MacBook and how do I make space on it?

The startup disk is usually your HDD.
Freeing Up Space on The Hard Drive
  1. See Lion's Storage Display.
  2. You can remove data from your Home folder except for the /Home/Library/ folder.
  3. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on your hard drive.
  4. Also see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.
  5. See Where did my Disk Space go?.
  6. See The Storage Display.
You must Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.
You should consider replacing the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits.

I want to send my itunes library from my old macbook (start up disk nearly full) to my new iMac.   Then delete my itunes library from my old macbook.  Is Homesharing my best choice for this?
What I don't want to happen is once I delete my itunes library from my old Macbook that the iMac itunes library to delete itself because I am using Homesharing.  Does homesharing sync and make that happen?

After confirming that all your stuff is on the drive, delete the photos you have copied. You will need to empty the iPhototrash to free up the space.

  • Start up disk full need help freeing up space.

My start up disk almost full.  Shows 137 GB in "other category"  Have been able to locate 75 GB but not 137GB.  what makes up "Other"?

First, empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. Then reboot. That will temporarily free up some space. According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB free on the startup volume for normal operation. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of your data. Use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space. Proceed further only if the problem hasn't been solved. ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To really see everything, you have to run it as root. Back up all data now. Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways: ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.) ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens. ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid. After installing ODS in the Applications folder, drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. When you're done with it, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • Disk Utility - Can't repair Disk - Help needed :(

    Hi,
I have some trouble to use Disk Utility (on my iBook G4 - 1.33 Ghz+1 GB RAM)
I run Disk Utility to verify and repair permissions, which worked, and then Verify Disk. HEre is the logged result:

I wanted to run Disk Repair, but the button would not highlight, therefore could not be started.
I retried today, and now the Verify Disk task won't even work, blocking Disk Utility (needs force quit)
(E=G4 is the name of my Hard Drive on the iBook)
I also tried TechTool Deluxe coming with Applecare protection plan, but TTD can not check the "Volume Structure".
Has anyone got any tips or sequence to solve this?
    Thanks in advance

    I just ran the Disk Utility, and cannot very disk. It gives me an error message;
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
    Volume needs repair
and when I run the repair, this is the message:
The volume GERRARD could not be repaired.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
1 volume could not be repaired because of an error
    Repair attempted on 1 volume
1 volume could not be repaired
Prior to running Disk Utility, I have already tried DiskWarrior, and could not repair my disk. Anyway I can fix this problem??? Formatting the disk would be my last option (though I am unsure if it will fix the problem). Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Meanwhile, I will continue to back up my file, and delete unused data and try to run it again.
Thank you all very much for any input.
    Cheers,
    Matt

Repairing permissions is generally irrelevant (certainly the oft-given advice to repair before installing something, as authorizing an installer with your password allows it to override whatever previous settings there may have been, anyway), and the "error" messages usually meaningless.
It CAN make a difference, so there's some merit to running it when you have problems, but those cases are extremely rare.
The invalid sibling link, however, is a serious problem. It means there is a structural problem with your hard disk's contents. You must start up the computer from the install DVD and select Disk Utility from the "Utilities" menu as soon as that shows up, and repair the disk. Once it says "successfully repaired", run it again until it says "appears to be OK".

  • MacBook hdmi lcd display - help needed!

Hi all, I'm connecting my MacBook to my 32" Vizio lcd via hdmi (using a mini-dvi to dvi adaptor & dvi to hdmi cable). When I mirror displays, one of two things happen: (1) either the Vizio display is too small and has black bars around it, or (2) the Vizio display is too large and I cannot see the menu bar or the dock.
The fist time I connected to the tv, I managed to get the full screen display perfectly but have not been able to repeat this since. I've tried everything I can think of - different combinations of resolutions, with and without overscan, etc.
    Any advice much appreciated!

    Try this:
Hook the MB up to the Vizio.
Hook the MB up to it's Magsafe power adapter and plug the adapter in.
Close the lid on the MB so it goes to sleep.
Now, plug something into a USB port on the MB.
The recommended thing to plug in would be a USB keyboard and mouse. But you could use just one of those, meaning either a keyboard or a mouse. If you don't have a USB keyboard or mouse, you can just plug in one of those USB flash memory devices.
The USB activity will cause the MB to wake up with its lid down and only the external (Vizio) screen will be active. Once that happens, you can lift the lid on the MB and use its keyboard and trackpad and the built-in screen will stay off.

I just removed the DVD and put a SSD into that room as my system drivers. The HD is untouched.
As you seen in screenshot (show hidden file), if I deleted the .fcpuser and .fcplock, it'll autmatically create every time I run FCPX, even i mount this driver after FCPX launchs.
All the video file is store in lightroomlibrary. and tones photos are in photos folder.
Is it possible that FCPX will scan the file on my disks and happneds that one of video files is broken?
I'm removing all the files to my mobiledrive, it'll take some minuts to see the result.

  • Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 installation disk help needed

I bought Elements 10 from the Apple store awhile ago, but have just got around to installing it for the first time.  CD 1 won't autoplay and I'm not sure what to do from here.  Somewhere it was suggested to try downloading the trial version and entering the serial #, when prompted to purchase, but I can;t get the trial version to work.  Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

In what way is the trial version not working for you?  Also if you have only purchased Photoshop Elements 10 then Disc three should be labeled stating it is for Mac OS.  You can find more details at Install Premiere Elements, Photoshop Elements - http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop-elements/kb/install-premiere-elements-photoshop-elements. html.

  • I tashed Address Book and I don't have start up disk - help!

Can I download it somewhere? I never used to use it and now I have an iphone...

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
No, you cannot download it. Call Apple and give them your serial number, they will replace your disks at a nominal charge.
It's also possible 10.5.8 Combo Updatemay restore it. This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before.
Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions after update from /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.

  • Recovery disk help needed

I recently replaced the disc drive on my Toshiba Satellite A105-S4284 laptop. I attempted to use the recovery discs that came with the laptop but only one disc ran & formatted the drive. Why didn't it ask for me to insert the 2nd disc? After reinstalling Windows XP, I find I cannot connect to the internet or even locate my wireless wifi.. Also, how many MB's should I set aside when formatting the drive for partitioning?

    Downloads are here
After reinstalling Windows XP, I find I cannot connect to the internet....
Start over with a clean install of Windows, because the order of installation matters.
Install the Intel chipset software followed by its display driver prior to any other driver. (Ignore all that nVidia and ATI stuff.) Install the Common Modules before any other Toshiba utility
I would create a single partition encompassing the entire drive.

  • Cannot start EPMA services :: Help needed

    Hi,
We have installed EPMA 11.1.1.3 on a Windows 2003 Server VM with 2GB RAM and Weblogic 9.2 server. Database configuration and app deployment are successful but somehow the services wont start up.
Checked the event viewer and it was pointing to Dimension server error. Here is the content from dimension_server.log .
Please check and let me know if you can identify the root cause of this issue..
[Engine Startup] Hyperion.DimensionServer.Program.LogMessage(:0) - An error occurred during initialization of engine ID 1: Object reference not set to an instance of an object..
System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
    at Hyperion.DimensionServer.Library.Load()
    at Hyperion.DimensionServer.Global.Initialize(String jobManagerConnectString)
    at Hyperion.DimensionServer.Program.Main(String[] args)
    Thanks

Yes, workspace agent is running fine. We have the hyperion 11.1.1.3 suite, except for EPMA & Fin Reporting print server, running on AIX 5.3 on a different server.., if that may lead you into something
    Thanks

  • Macbook air won't turn on and the screen will go white. It says that the start up disk is full. HELP

When I turn my macbook air on it sends me a message saying that my start up disk is full and that I have to free up some space. When I log in into my account the screen will go white and I won't be able to do anything. I tried to restart my computer in safemode holding down the shift key while restarting it but it won't work. HELP PLEASE.

If you could boot from an external OS X boot drive then you could delete some files.  You probably don't have such a HDD/Thumb drive but a Genius at an Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider could help you.  This is not a hardware repair so a Genius should not need to charge you for this service.

or find an Apple Authorized Service Provider https://locate.apple.com/country
After it is healthy again I would buy a new external HDD and use Carbon Copy Clone or Super Duper! to create a bootable clone.  Keeping a clone current is also an excellent backup methodology in addition to Time Machine.
