MacBook virus?

Yes, I know IOS systems don't get viruses but, while using google, I got one of those virus messages that my computer was infected with a virus
and to call a phone number provided to have it removed. Of course I didn't call the number, but once I shut down the MacBook I can't restart it past this screen:
Thank you for any help!

There is no official call-in support popup in OS X that would take you to an Apple Support
answer to your issue; so whatever you did see, likely would not be helpful. On the other
hand, there are scams that you may find allow untoward and bad access to your Mac and
also give some pretenders access to your personal information. Some want you to pay a
huge fee while they (not Apple) meddle in your computer. Usually they do not fix anything.
You may need to see about starting the computer from an OS X Recovery and run the
OS X Utilities to access Disk Utility, and see if that can repair the hard disk drive. Also
there should be a startup manager so you can choose your installed OS X as boot disc
for the restart. You may also need to check & be certain the icon of Mac HD highlighted
to confirm it is selected as the Startup Volume, in system preferences in the running OS.
Sometimes a faltering Mac can be restarted with the Shift Key held down, so as to get
it to start in SafeBoot, you may have to login to your admin account, then hold Shift key
again until you see a desktop appear. Some users suggest you can let it sit and it may
actually boot into safeboot mode, sometimes this requires you to be there & hold Shift
key down until the actual event occurs. Either way, SafeBoot also tries to repair the
startup volume. Then with the system running (in SafeBoot) you can try & see if the
Disk Utility from Utilities folder (see GO in finder to locate that folder) can repair disk
permissions, and then see if you can get the computer to restart normally.
Be wary of any outside interests that appear in your computer that ask or tell you to
call some phone number, or give up any information, as that may be a wrong turn.
There are several ideas and a wide amount of information to be gained by reading ahead
of issues, some sources are in Apple Support, others in places where users of good
reputation have offered advice online and who also contribute to these ASC discussions.
One of these is TheSafeMac site. Note Tech Guides, there are three. And other stuff, too.
http://www.thesafemac.com/tech-guides/ - adware, malware, & performance guides
A problem may arise by exposure to adware, from visiting web sites and/or clicking on
links that are compromised; some offer 'free download' implying one item, yet another
may be installed in your Mac. These items are sometimes hard to remove. Some basic
identification, ideas & removal processes are covered in Tech Guide for adware/removal.
Apple support offers this information on general to specific adware, etc removal:
•Remove unwanted adware that displays pop-up ads and graphics on your Mac - Apple Support
There are several items out there which may affect a Mac OS X, but most of them are up
to the user to determine a safe course; the system itself tries to avoid trouble, but a user
may still go to places the system would never go, and get a 'free download' or whatever.
Good luck & happy computing!

I want to get a virus protection just to be safe and i wanted to know which virus protection is best

Also i wanted to know which takes up less space?

Do You Need Anti-Virus Protection for Your Mac?
According to Rich Mogull's article, Should Mac Users Run Antivirus Software?,
"The reality is that today the Mac platform is relatively safe. There are hundreds of thousands of viruses and other malicious software programs floating around for Windows, but less than 200 are known to target the Mac, and many of those are aimed at versions of the Mac OS prior to Mac OS X (and thus have no effect on a modern Mac).
It's not that Mac OS X is inherently more secure against viruses than current versions of Windows (although it was clearly more secure than Windows prior to XP SP2); the numerous vulnerabilities reported and patched in recent years are just as exploitable as their Windows equivalents. But most security experts agree that malicious software these days is driven by financial incentives, and it's far more profitable to target the most dominant platform."
Mr. Mogull is a computer security expert. I recommend reading the entire article as it is quite informative.

  • My MacBook Pro keeps on randomly scrolling on webpages, putting several spaces when I don't press the spacebar and only sometimes makes a space when I press the spacebar. Why is it doing this? Do I have a virus?

I am currently struggling to write this due to my very erratic spacebar. When I press it, it only creates a space about two thirds of the time. When I don't press it, it creates spaces, often several, in the middle of words.  This is incredibly annoying and time consuming when writing. If I'm on iTunes or DVD player, it means the media is constantly stopping and starting.
When I am on webpages they will often scroll straight to the bottom, and when I try to scroll back up it won't allow me to and the screen will look like it's jumping, like my instruction for it to scroll up is fighting against an external instruction forcing it down. This 'fighting' effect is also seen with the spacebar issue when it makes several spaces and I press backspace to try and delete the spaces.
I have a MacBook Pro bought in July 2012 using Mac OS X 10.7.5. I use ESET Cybersecurity, which hasn't identified any viruses. I have deleted all internet downloads that aren't from well-known websites, yet the problem persists. It has been happening on and off for about a week, during which time I have turned the computer on and off many times, though today it has been far worse than before. I am worried I have a virus, though can't seem to locate one.
Please, if you can shed any light on the situation, please do! I'm not a techy person at all, so there may be a very obvious reason and solution for this, in which case I apologise for this waste of time. Still, any help would be very very appreciated, thank you!

  • I have a Java/CVE-2010-94 virus on my macbook pro. Can Someone help me fix this?

I used Virus Barrier Express that I downloaded from the App Store and it found a virus named Java/CVE-2010-94. I ran Virus Barrier Express again after I prssed the "fixed it" button; however, i'm not sure if this virus or any other virus is still on my MacBook Pro. Can someone please help me know if i'm safe to use my Mac?
*The first sign of any type of virus was when I was on a website and my screen froze. I couldn't move anything or press anything. Something popped up and told me to turn off the Mac. I had no choice and I did turn it off. I used my Virus Barrier Express to scan any viruses, but nothing appeared. It only appeared after I downloaded new updates yesterday.
*I just did some research and it turned out to be a "kernel Panic". http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3742 I haven't encountered another one ever since so does that mean my Mac is safe now?

    Steven --
Get rid of the VirusBarrier Express.  At this time, there are no Mac viruses.  All you're doing with that thing is slowing down your Mac.  Look in your VBE folder, to see if there's an UNinstaller.  I don't know why Apple is making these things available.  They're garbage, 98% of them.  Two good ones are ClamXav and Sophos.  But still, IMHO, they are unnecessary.
Kernel Panics, on the other hand, are serious.  If you don't have any more of them, that's good.  If you have any more of them, come back and post your Panic report here.
Here's info on this virus, which should affect only PCs.

But the have some great advice to avoid malware:
Take the following steps to help prevent infection on your computer:
Enable a firewall on your computer.
Get the latest computer updates for all your installed software.
    Use up-to-date antivirus software.
Limit user privileges on the computer.
Use caution when opening attachments and accepting file transfers.
Use caution when clicking on links to web pages.
    Avoid downloading pirated software.
Protect yourself against social engineering attacks.
    Use strong passwords.

  • I believe I have a virus on my macbook pro and do not know how to get rid of it.

Well I was being stupid and trying to get free gems on clash of clans so i did the stupid little surveys and that is most likely where I got the virus from. Never doing that again. When ever i go onto google chrome or any browser a random page pops up about mac protector or something and when I try using ovoo, it instantly backs out and I cannot use it. so i do not know what to do and i am not sure if i am using ios 8.1.1 or 8.1.2. i have a macbook pro that i got 3 years ago

There is no need to download anything to solve this problem. You may have installed a variant of the "VSearch" ad-injection malware.
Malware is always changing to get around the defenses against it. These instructions are valid as of today, as far as I know. They won't necessarily be valid in the future. Anyone finding this comment a few days or more after it was posted should look for a more recent discussion, or start a new one.
The VSearch malware tries to hide itself by varying the names of the files it installs. To remove it, you must first identify the naming pattern.
Triple-click the line below on this page to select it, then copy the text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C:
    /Library/LaunchDaemons
    In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
A folder named "LaunchDaemons" may open. Look inside it for two files with names of the form
              com.something.daemon.plist
    and
               com.something.helper.plist
Here something is a variable word, which can be different in each case. So far it has always been a string of letters without punctuation, such as "cloud," "dot," "highway," "submarine," or "trusteddownloads." Sometimes the word is "apple," and then you must be especially careful not to delete the wrong files, because many built-in OS X files have similar names.
If you find these files, leave the LaunchDaemons folder open, and open the following folder in the same way:
    /Library/LaunchAgents
In this folder, there may be a file named
              com.something.agent.plist
where the word something is the same as before.
If you feel confident that you've identified the above files, back up all data, then drag just those three files—nothing else—to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password. Close the Finder windows and restart the computer.
Don't delete the "LaunchAgents" or "LaunchDaemons" folder or anything else inside either one.
The malware is now permanently inactivated, as long as you never reinstall it. You can stop here if you like, or you can remove two remaining components for the sake of completeness.
    Open this folder:
    /Library/Application Support
If it has a subfolder named just
               something
where something is the same word you saw before, drag that subfolder to the Trash and close the window.
Don't delete the "Application Support" folder or anything else inside it.
    Finally, in this folder:
    /System/Library/Frameworks
there may an item named exactly
                v.framework
It's actually a folder, though it has a different icon than usual. This item always has the above name. Drag it to the Trash and close the window.
Don't delete the "Frameworks" folder or anything else inside it.
If you didn't find the files or you're not sure about the identification, post what you found.
If in doubt, or if you have no backups, change nothing at all.
The trouble may have started when you downloaded and ran an application called "MPlayerX." That's the name of a legitimate free movie player, but the name is also used fraudulently to distribute VSearch. If there is an item with that name in the Applications folder, delete it, and if you wish, replace it with the genuine article from mplayerx.org.
This trojan is often found on illegal websites that traffic in pirated content such as movies. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect more of the same, and worse, to follow. Never install any software that you downloaded from a bittorrent, or that was downloaded by someone else from an unknown source.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere  should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Then, still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
Install system data files and security updates (OS X 10.10 or later)
    or
Download updates automatically (OS X 10.9 or earlier)
    if it's not already checked.

my iphone 4g has crashed.  itunes doesn't seem to recognize it and wil not let me restore it.  i have updated all software and there are no anti-virus apps/software on the macbook that this phone syncs with.  i do get an error message on the phone that says something like the accessory is not compatible but I have no accessory for the phone other than the apple chargers and ear buds.  any thoughts?

The possible fix for the "this accessory is not compatible" is to carefully clean the dock port with isopropyll alcohol especially the pins which are on top of the mid rib. Be firm but do not break anything. Let it dry for a minute. See if that helps, if not try to clean one more time. If problems persist might need to Visit Apple.

  • I installed 10.6.8 from 10.6.6 on my Macbook Pro and now can't open Safari-think it's something to do with the Intego anti-virus software. Reverted Intego software back to default state and now computer just boots ups up slowly and can't access a thing.

I installed 10.6.8 from 10.6.6 OS on my MacBook Pro and have not been able to open secure sites on Safari.  Think it has something to do with the Intego Anti-virus installed.  Tried restoring Intego to default status and now my Mac barely boots up and does nothing else but spin.  Ugh.  Has anyone had similar issues and if so, were you able to resolve?  How?  Thanks,

1: Backup your user files folders of Documents, Music, Pictures etc., to a external powered drive (not TimeMachine) and disconnect.
2: Insert the 10.6 installer disk and reboot holding c
3: Simply reinstall OS X without erasing the drive, it will overwrite the installed version of OS X and the root level software, but leave your Applications folder contents (expect Apple bundled programs) and user files alone. (but backup anyway in case it fails)
4: Reboot and the Integro is gone out of your system, but there may still be something laying around in Applicaitons to delete. Use Software Update to get up to date.
5: You don't need anti-virus on a Mac, Apple provides it already for you sight unseen.
6: If you Software update, the bad certificate issues are pulled, thus are not a threat.

  • Do I need an anti-virus program on a MacBook?

I'm a brand new MacBook user. Just bought the 13-inch aluminum body version from Club Mac and it was delivered yesterday. The notebook is actually for my wife to be able to use while she's recovering from knee surgery in a couple of weeks and I thought it was time to branch our family out from PC's and Windows. So I'm setting up the MacBook for her to be able to use it...and for our family to get more literate on a Mac and it looks great! My question is do I need an anti-virus program and if so, which is a good one recommended by Mac users? NOTE: because my wife is familiar with Windows, I had XP service pack 3 installed and have VM Ware Fusion onboard to be able to run both Windows and Leopard for her convenience and to assist us. So there MAY be some Windows use on this MacBook, at least at first. All responses, replies, suggestions, welcome. THANK YOU.

  • My Macbook all of a sudden can't open Skype, Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Entourage. I have done research and read that it has something to do with malware and viruses. Please help I feel like I have tried everything!

This started a few days ago, when I noticed skype would not open and keeps quitting unexpectingly. Now it's all of my microsoft office programs. I have read horrible things on the internet about creeps building some sort of 'backdoor' through Mircosoft Word and are now able to access my macbook. I want to feel safe again and I want to be able to use skype again. I think I will delete Microsoft office until I find/can afford a better version.
I have tried deleting and re-installing the programs, PRAM-ing my mac, doing the utilities organizing thing, and I downloaded 4 different scanners (Cleanmymac, VirusBarrier Express, Bitdefender Virus Scanner, and ClamXav) to help get rid of this and only one scanner found a small file that was harmful. I need some advice PLEASE!
    Thank you for your time!

Sorry I'm just getting to this now, but a lot going on today in this front. There is now a "K" version of Flashback and perhaps more going on.
A couple of considerations you need to be aware of.
It's clear from the results of your testing that the reason you were infected is because your Java is out of date, so it's important that you keep all your software up-to-date going forward.
But even that won't protect you from this new "K" version as Apple has not released the patch to it yet, so I encourage you to disable Java in all your browsers and consider doing so for everything by opening Java Preferences (located in /Applications/Utilities/) and unchecking the box next to "J2SE 6.0" and any other box that might be checked. If you find that some application(s) you need must use Java, then you should enable it only to run that application(s).
We cannot be certain that what you did totally killed the Trojan, so your best bet would be to restore your Mac back to where it was before you were infected using TimeMachine. If you don't have a TimeMachine backup or cannot determine the date of infection, then your safest solution is this one:
    Courtesy of Linc Davis:
I suggest you take the following steps immediately:
    1. Back up all data to at least two different devices, if you haven't already done so.
    2. Boot from your recovery partition (if running Mac OS X 10.7 or later) or your installation disc (if running an earlier version of the Mac OS), launch Disk Utility, and erase the startup drive. This action will destroy all data on the drive, so you must be sure of your backups.
    3. Install the Mac OS.
    4. Reboot and go through the initial setup process to create an account. Don’t import anything from your backups at this stage.
    5. If running Mac OS X 10.6.x or earlier, run Software Update.
    6. Restore the contents of all the top-level subfolders of your home folder except “Library” from the most recent backup. You can also restore the files in the Library folder, but don’t restore any of its subfolders; only the files contained in those folders, and only if they’re visible in the Finder. Don’t restore any hidden files or folders, no matter where they are.
    7. If you’re running Mac OS X 10.5.x or earlier, disable Java in Safari’s preferences, and leave it disabled until you upgrade to Mac OS X 10.6.8 or later, including all available updates. The Java web plugin is unsafe to use under older versions of the Mac OS. Note: I’m not referring to JavaScript, which is unrelated to Java, despite the similarity in the names.
    8. Change every Internet password you have, starting with banking passwords. Check all financial accounts for unauthorized transactions. Take this step only after you’ve secured your system in the preceding steps, not before.
    9. Reinstall your third-party software from fresh downloads or original media, not from backups which may be contaminated. If you use any third-party web browsers under Mac OS X 10.5.x or earlier, disable Java in their preferences, as you did with Safari in step 7.
Of course, as of this morning you should follow my instructions for disabling Java and ignore his, at least until Apple gets that Java patch out.
Pay particular attention to Step 8 no matter what you decide to do.

  • How can I check for viruses and malware on my MacBook Pro?

I have a MacBook Pro running OS X (10.7.5).  I don't have any anti-virus or malware software installed.  My yahoo email account was hacked last night, after I had added the account to Mail on my mac (which obviously involved typing in my email account password).  I'm now worried that I might have a virus or malwre on my computer as I've had that email account for years with the same password (foolish I know) and never had a problem.
Is there a way to check if my mac has any viruses or malware?  Which anti-virus/malware software should I install to protect my mac?
    Thanks.

Ever hear of this?  I was using Mozilla, and now I'm scared, so on Safari.  Even so, I'm worried about doing online banking until I know what's up.  Despite that, I did online banking on Safari today, and the pages wouldn't load, or weren't clickable.  Also, I'm getting blank screens on Safari.  It all started after this happened a number of days ago, so I want to do a scan…. but newish to the Apple world, so don't want to screw things up even more (potentially) - by installing some incompatible malware scanner. From the other day:
has anyone's Macbook Pro ever been hacked? I was using Mozilla, just opened a twitter acct, was trying to cross link with G+, and all of a sudden all this weird stuff was happening: url bars erasing on its own (and fast), pages jumping from window to window, 2 unread msgs in Gmail later marked as read. I shut down and restarted. I don't know if it's a key stroke I did or if I may've been hacked. worried.

  • My 3 year-old macbook pro is very slow. I have run disk utility and virus scan with no improvement. The "beach ball" will spin for minutes at a time when opening, closing or changing windows. Apple Store looked at it a few months ago with no help.

my 3 year-old macbook pro is very slow. I have run disk utility and virus scan with no improvement. The "beach ball" will spin for minutes at a time when opening, closing or changing windows. Apple Store looked at it a few months ago with no help. What can I do?

    Under CPU: 3.5% user; 5% system; 91% idle; 441 threads; 90 processes.
    Under System: out of 2GB - 54.7MB free; 530MB wired; 603MB active; 862MB inactive; 1.95GB used.
Is too much of the system memory tied up? If so, what can I do to free some up?

  • What's the best type of anti-virus or spyware to use for cleaning up my MacBook Pro? I recently switched to a mac from pc, so don't know much about my computer yet.

I recently switched to a macbook pro from a pc, and am curious what type of (if any) virus protection or spyware protection to use for it.  I keep getting a message to Install MacKeeper 2012; but am not sure if it's worth paying for or not.  I'd like some advice on what would be the best protection for my computer.  Also, I recently had the new microsoft office installed; which has been having issues freezing up quite often when I use it.  I don't know if clenaing my mac would help with the Microsoft office stuff, or not (or even if that would be related)...also each time I restart my computer; all windows applications open (word, power point, excel & outlook).   obviously I'm not very tech savvy to begin with so any advice would help!  I'm hoping this computer will last me thru the next 4 years of grad school & just want to make sure this computer is well taken care of to last that long.  Thanks!

You don't need an antivirus, but don't install Mackeeper if you don't want a damaged Mac OS > https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3036 See > http://www.reedcorner.net/mmg/
