MacMini update - after restart cannot log in anymore!!!!

I had my MacMini running unattended for a week or more and today when I returned to it I got a popup requesting me to restart in order to "update" something. So I allowed it to do this. Bad choice!!!
Now when I reach the logon screen and after I have entered my password, there are a circular succession of pop-ups like this:
"talagent wants to use the "Local Items" keychain.
Please enter the keychain password."
There are 6 different identifiers like talagent, for example CalendarAgent and AddreeBookSourceSync on successive dialog boxes.
I have tried re-entering my account login password and my AppleID password but these do not work. So I use the Cancel button instead and then the dialogs just cycle around incessantly. There is absolutely no way to get out of this as far as I can see....
I cannot even dissmiss the dialog and use some other item on the logon screen!
I have absolutely no idea what this keychain password could be and I have not been asked for it previously either, not even when I upgraded from Lion to Maverick back in November.
What is going on here?????
I have found other threads here about the keychain login proble , but they all refer to things happening while logged on, but in this case I am stopped entirely from even logging on! And my account on the MacMini is an admin account if that matters.

Boot in safe mode and try to log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
If you can log in, see below.

  • After restart cannot log into Workgroup Manager

Ugh - after a restart (Leopard Srvr 10.5.4 on Quad core Xeon) I am unable to access any user info in Workgroup Mgr, it's just devoid of information. I do see "Viewing Directory: /LDAPv3/127.0.0.1. Not authenticated" along the top of the window. Clicking the lock to authenticate brings up the login screens, but I cannot login.
Seeing some errors in LDAP Log related to slapd(40), but I don't know if these are related to what's going on.
Any assistance you guys could provide would be fantastic. Thanks in advance.

Turns out for some reason our mail server software (Communigate Pro) was set to use the LDAP port that is normally used by Open Directory. CGP was grabbing the port first, and this was screwing up Open Dir. Not sure why this suddenly started happening, the server has been rebooted several times in the past and the config has not changed. Very odd, just glad we got it figured out.

  • Average Active Sessions graph not updated after restart

    Hi,
I just wanted to ask - I have restarted a database (11.1.0.7) with GC 11.1.0.1 but after the restart of the db the graphs on a performance tab are not updated. It means that the doesn't refresh and doesn't show actual data...
I checked jobs on the target database and GC repository but nothing is broken. Info on Home tab of the target DB is actual but not the graphs..
I also tried to clearstate and restart the agent but no change..
    Any idea?
    Thanks

This is a bug and can be solved by applying
Patch 10307099: PERFORMANCE CHARTS DO NOT UPDATE AFTER DATABASE IS RESTARTED
This patch is included in the july 2011 PSU: Grid Control Patch Set Update 11.1.0.1.4 for the Oracle Management Service, see MOS doc ID 1334286.1

  • HT4484 My email was phished, so I deleted it and changed it completely.  Now all the apps that I downloaded with the old email cannot update because I cannot log into that email.  Mountain Lion is compatible with the new updated iPhoto.  what can I do?

My email address was phished and I had to delete it completely.  That was the one I used to download all my original apps on my computer.  I have since changed to a new address, but since my apps were under the old one, I cannot update them without logging into the old address.  It no longer exists....so how do I fix this?
Some of the apps I don't really care about updating but, I did download the new Mountain Lion and it wants to update my iphots and I can't do it.
Any help will be appreciated!  Thanks!

    Hi joaroa,
When you say you deleted your email and changed it completely, those are actually two different things, and it sounds like you are talking about your Apple ID, not just your email, (because you speak of making purchases with it).
If you changed your Apple ID (preferred, How to change the name you use for your Apple ID), then you would not have another Apple ID and all of your purchases would still be with your only Apple ID, it would just be renamed to your new email address.
If you instead created a new Apple ID (with a different email address) then of course you have two different Apple IDs and the old one still exists and is probably active. Just because you may not use an email address anymore, that doesn't mean an Apple ID of the same name is inactive, Apple IDs aren't deleted.  If you start purchasing Apps with your new Apple ID, it can really cause confusion because, as you see, you need to be logged into the Apple ID that purchased an App to update it. It would be best to stick with one Apple ID for purchases, probably the one you have spent the most money with.  Remember, unless it's an @mac or @me Apple ID you can rename them rather than creating yet another Apple ID.  Since Apple IDs can't be merged or deleted, creating more can be a messy.
If you don't remember what the password is for a particular Apple ID, you can visit iforgot.apple.com where you can reset it, the AppleConnect password.  If the Apple ID is no longer a valid email address, you can use the security question method to reset the password instead.
Unless you have made a lot of purchases with your new Apple ID, I'd recommend moving back into your old one, especially if that has the most or the most expensive apps with it.  If your new Apple ID is the "name/email" you want to use, you could rename the new one to a secondary email, then rename your old Apple ID to your preferred name/email.  Basically, rename the new one to something else which frees up that name (email) to rename your old Apple ID.  Thus your old Apple ID has the new name.  See My Apple ID.  The "Manage your account" link is where you can rename the ID itself.
Sorry about getting long winded here, but it's important to keep as few Apple IDs as possible, at least when it comes to purchases.  If an Apple ID is undesired, rename it rather than creating a new one. It will be much simpler in the long run.
Let us know how it goes.

  • My iMac won't install updates after restart. Please help?

My iMac will restart to install updates, but after logging in again, nothing happens. Even if I click the Apple logo and go to "Software Update", it tells me it still has to install the updates and to restart again. Having to end up with nothing again. Help please? =(

Check /Library/Updates/ for folders with numbers. If there are any, open one and double-click the one with a dist extension. If that installs, then repeat with any others. If not, manually download the updates and then install them.

  • Input source disappears after restart or log out. How to fix it?

I use two input sources: U.S. and Russian-PC. But recently the Russian-PC started to disappear everytime I restart the iMac or just log out and log in back. Instead of Russian-PC there is Russian which is inconvinient to use. So I always have to open language and text preferences unchek Russian, check Russian-PC.
I have tried to change language preferences on root user but it did not help.
Does somebody know how to fix it?

Well Bababooey if you're comparing yourself to a Apple Genius Bar then you should already know my answer, your snarky remark get a snarky reply.  Why would I go to a salesperson to fix my computer problem when I can go directly go to the source itself.  I used to sell Apple computers over 8 years ago and was apple certified before the Genius bar existed. If I am to go about fixing an issue I can't fix on my own I will go to the source itself meaning Apple's programmers and developers - being UI UX Developer myself I know they should have QA'd all platforms and troubleshooted any arising issues.
This was also the first time in the 20 years I've been using a Mac that I even attempted to go on this forum which i thought would put me in connection with a certified Apple representative.  This turned out to be a complete waste of time just being a public forum with no Apple employee involved.  I was hoping to find a quick fix but in turn I was only frustrated with stupid responses such as yours that were in no way an answer to my original question.
BTW I fixed the issue on my own and without your help or Apples help. I'm glad if all forums point here regarding this issue because I now have the answer. The answer I was looking for from someone earlier was as simple as this {Download Maverick and reinstall the platform - it will take an hour to do but afterward 10.9.2 was installed and my computer is now able to shutdown and restart without having to do a hard boot.}  No more software update bar at top and no problems with my drive which I told both you and Grant - I know my computer better than you and I've probably been using them longer than you.
So again Babowa you were so wrong...... and I am right.
Again anyone having the same problem, I suggest reinstalling Maverick and you'll be suprised 10.9.2 will work fine.

  • Finder View options, won't stay set after restart or log out

I like to have my application and utility folders (in the finder side bar) open in icon view and arranged by name and my Home and Movies folder open in list view with files arranged by name.
Each time i log out of my computor or restart the view options i have mentioned are reset, which is extreamly frustrating.
I have also noticed that the finder window now opens in a small size in the middle of the screen rather than being aligned to the left hand side as like to have it set.
This problem has only occoured recently, i think after deleting some "relic" files using Cleanapp.
Any ideas on how i can sort this out greatly appreciated

I finally know what causes folders to lose their view settings - even if you have set them to "Always open in..." a particular view (but I do not know how to fix it).
The trigger is setting any window to "column" view. Try it.
    (1) Create a new folder, and set it to your preferred view (but not column view). Close the folder and re-open it to verify that it is in the view you have set. You can even set it to "Always open in..." that view, if you like (it doesn't matter).
    (2) Now open up any other finder window or folder, and switch it to column view. If it is already in column view, switch it to some other view and then back to column view.
    (3) Now go back to the folder you created in step 1 and open it. Presto: column view. (Aargh!)
I confirmed this with a helpful and sympathetic Apple support staffer at the Genius Bar in my local Apple Store. Unfortunately, he had no solution, but noted it as an apparent bug in the 10.7 finder.
This is an extremely reliable behavior, that I have confirmed on 5 different machines all running 10.7.2. It is also an extremely frustrating behavior that I hope Apple fixes soon.
    -Barry
P.S. I will copy this to similar threads where this is being discussed, in hopes that it is helpful. Sometimes understanding why something happens can make it a little less frustrating, even if you don't know how to fix it.

  • After restart, cannot use input devices - mouses, keyboard

This happens about 2 or 3 times out of 10 restarts.
My mac pro nehalem 4,1 boots up normally but i cannot use the mouse or keyboard.  I can move the cursor pointer icon around, but cannot click, and cannot use my keyboard at all.  When this occurs, I have tried using multiple mouses, both wireless and wired, and used different ports on the machine.
In the past i have had to hard restart the machine but this most recent instance i decided to log in using screen sharing on my laptop and i was able to use the mouse to restart.  Everything booted up normally and the mouse and keyboard works again.
    Im on Lion 7.3.
Has anyone heard of this happening?

The Mac Pro has a USB power budget for all the front ports, and a different one for all the back ports.
What other USB devices do you have on the group of ports you are using (front or back)?

  • Used super user mode - after reboot, cannot log in as before

Hi. I wanted to gain admin access, so I went into the single-user mode by holding command-S. First I ran */sbin/fsck -fy* It said there was an issue, but that it fixed it. Then I ran */sbin/mount -uw /*
Then the *sh /ect/rc* command. I then ran *passwd root* command so that i could be an administrator on my work computer and subsequently change the KEYCHAIN ACCESS so that I can use it.
    Then I typed reboot.
Reboot it did. _Now I am only able to log into my computer as a root user._ As a root user I can see all the users set up on this computer, including myself... and get to all my files.
I need to put this back the way I found it never ever to think I can hack into my work computer again.
Can anyone please oh please help me??
Thanks much for anything you can do!!

  • Messenger MSN 5.1.1 cannot log on anymore- freezes during endless logon

    Dear all,
after having worked fine on Tiger 10.4.6, MSN Messenger 5.1.1 freezes during an endless logon attempt. If I disconnect the network, it "wakes up" again and recognizes brakes off the login procedure, which -when online- never finishes...
I tried to reinstall MSN, searching for all Messenger with Spotlight, deleting all possible cache, and preferences files.
but even a new install results in the same strange endles logon procedure.
who can help me to solve this? Thanks!

    Try a 3rd party Messenger.
I use Adium, which allows me to have one big buddy list for MSN, AIM, Yahoo, ICQ, Jabber, and others (not sure about .mac IM-ers)
Enter the correct details in Adium about your MSN credentials, and see if this app works for your IM addiction. There may some features of MSN's whiz bang software that may not be available, but chat and file transfer are available.
If Adium works, jettison MSN, and away you go. There may be other IM clients that can handle MSN. I don't know.

  • SERIOUS BUG - cannot log in Leopard after upgrading to 10.5.7!

Hi all, I upgraded my Macbook Pro to 10.5.7 via Software Update, and after that I cannot log in anymore! The system boots fine, I land on the log in screen. After entering the password, it seems to be logging in, I can see the dashboard and everything, and then it automatically logs out and jumps back to the log in screen!
I searched on Apple Support and found this -> http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1543?viewlocale=en_US, changing the password in single user mode doesn't work either!
Hope you guys know what's going on and give me a hand! I tried to contact Apple Support but they said my AppleCare is expired and won't help!
    Thanks guy!

Using Software Update can be finnicky!
There are no guarantees, but following this procedure when installing updates and upgrades on your Mac, or even re-installing them, will go a long way towards avoiding unpleasant after effects and ‘post-update stress disorder’.
It is also worth noting that it is an extreme rarity for updates to cause upsets to your system, as they have all been extensively beta-tested, but they may well reveal pre-existing ones, particularly those of which you may have been unaware. If you are actually aware of any glitches, make sure they are fixed before proceeding further.
So before you do anything else:
If you can, make a full backup first to an external hard disk. Ideally you should always have a bootable clone of your system that enables you to revert to the previous pre-update state.
Turn off sleep mode for both screen and hard disk.
Disconnect all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
    1. Repair Permissions (in Disk Utility)
    2. Verify the state of your hard disk using Disk Utility. If any faults are reported, restart from your install disk (holding down the C key), go to Disk Utility, and repair your startup disk. Restart again to get back to your startup disk.
At least you can now be reasonably certain that your system does not contain any obvious faults that might cause an update/upgrade to fail.
    3. Download the correct version of the COMBO update from the Apple download site.
The Combo updater of Leopard 10.5.7 can be found here:
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_7_ComboUpdate
If you prefer to download updates via Software Update in the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac was being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically. Set Software Update to just download the updater without immediately installing it. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install (which can be a lengthy process) might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc. Once it is downloaded, you can install at a time that suits you. You should make a backup copy of the updater on a CD in case you ever need a reinstall.
Full details about the 10.5.7 update here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3397
More information on using Software Updater here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US
Using the Combo updater ensures that all system files changed since the original 10.4.0 are included, and any that may have been missed out or subsequently damaged will be repaired. The Delta updater, although a temptingly smaller download, only takes you from the previous version to the new one, i.e. for example from 10.5.5 to 10.5.6. Software Update will generally download the Delta updater only. The preferable Combo updater needs to be downloaded from Apple's download site.
    Now proceed as follows:
    4. Close all applications.
    5. Unplug all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
    6. Install the update/upgrade. Do not under any circumstances interrupt this procedure. Do not do anything else on your computer while it is installing. Be patient.
    7. When it ask for a restart to complete the installation, click restart. This can take longer than normal, there are probably thousands of files to overwrite and place in the correct location. Do nothing while this is going on.
    8. Once your Mac is awake, repair permissions again, and you should be good to go!
If your Mac seems slightly sluggish or ‘different’, perform a second restart. It can’t hurt and is sometimes efficacious!
    9. Open a few of your most used applications and check that all is OK. In this connection please remember that not all manufacturers of third party applications and plug-ins, add-ons, haxies etc, will have had time to do any necessary rewrites to their software to make them compliant with the latest version of your operating system. Give them a weeks or two while you regularly check their websites for updates. This applies particularly to plug-ins for Safari 3.
N.B. Do not attempt to install two different updates at the same time as each may have different routines and requirements. Follow the above recommendations for each update in turn.
Lastly, Apple's own article on the subject of Software Update may also be useful reading:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106695
If you are updating Safari (or just have):
Input Managers from third parties can do as much harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up. If you have installed an OS update and Safari is crashing, the very first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level /Library), log out and log back in, and try again.
So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari.
Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party add-on.
Additional tips on software installation here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106692
To reiterate, Input Managers reach right into an application and alter its code. This puts the behavior of the affected application outside the control and responsibility of its developers: a recipe for problems. That's not to say that issues absolutely will ensue as a result of Input Managers, but you, as a user, must decide. If the functionality of a specific Input Manager or set thereof is really important to you, you may well choose to assume the associated risk.
Again, the advice is to remove all Input Managers from the following directories:
    • /Library/InputManagers
    • ~/Library/InputManagers
especially prior to system updates (they can always be added back one-by-one later).

  • Cannot log&capture after upgrading to Leopard...

    Hi,
    I'm using FCP 5.0.4 on PowerBook G4 1.67GHz PC
I recently upgraded from Tiger 10.4.11 to Leopard 10.5.6
Now it seems like I cannot Log&Capture anymore. When I press command-8, FCP shuts down and I get a message: The application Final Cut Pro quit unexpectedly.
Is that a known issue? Is there a way to solve the problem?
    Thanks,
    ~ymotion

5.1.4 will solve the compatibility issue, however, it is no longer available from Apple -you would have to find a copy on Ebay or similar. The current version is FCP 6 -part of Final Cut Studio 2.
Going back to Tiger will also solve it and will not cost anything, apart from the time spent reinstalling.
Unless there is some feature in Mac OS X 10.5 that you really need, this would be the easiest way to get FCP running again.
