MacOS 10.7 needs a new name

I propose Lion King, as in "The Lion Sleeps Tonight .."
On a serious note, this OS is truly slow, as in snail's pace.
The simplest actions: opening/closing a file, quitting out of an application, or, on opening Preview, and clicking on File->Open Recent,
take many (approx 5-10) seconds.  I have 2 machines running Lion, a MacBookPro with FileVault enabled, and an iMac with FileVault disabled.
They are both slow, with no noticeable difference in speed. But both of them are 20x slower than Snow Leopard for the kinds of operations listed above.
Whatever Apple has done to make a homogeneous environment for iOS, MacOS has killed performance.  I am really disappointed.

Hi --
This is a real mystery, as you will see.
First, here are the specs for the iMac I am using now:
     2.4Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
     4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
HD is 53% full, memory about 50% used
I made a new admin account and didn't see much difference in response there.
I ran Disk Utility. I repaired permissions and was in the midst of a Verify Disk when the machine froze.
I had to force-reboot.
Then when the machine came up I killed most apps and started them up one by one. At each step I was judging the responsiveness of the system by starting Preview and looking at the time it takes to pop up the Open Recent list, as well as to open and close a file.
I now have open most of the apps I normally run: Mail, Safari (several tabs), Chrome (several tabs)
Here is the mystery part: the response of my machine is back to normal!
There are a couple of things that seem different however -- one is that Preview shuts down by itself when I have closed the only file it had open. I don't recall that happening before.  And my snapZ Pro has lost its license key, which I had to re-enter again.
I can't make any sense of this -- unless there is a memory leak somewhere that gets fixed by the reboot.
Before the reboot I had Lightroom 3, Graphic Converter 7.6.2 open.
The problem is not as simply related to Lion as I had thought but these symptoms were not present before the upgrade.
If I can supply any other information ...

If your apps were in itunes on your computer, then they should still be there.  Just sync them back to the iphone.
BTW, the backup that itunes performs when syncing does NOT include music/apps/movies/tv shows etc.

I wonder if you are running an OS earlier than 10.9.x?  If so, you cannot run the *latest* version of Pages, which is 5.1.  Apple is trying to get you to update your OS to 10.9 Mavericks and then get you to update (but defintiely not upgrade) your Pages version to 5.1.  5.1 is, in everything but name, beta software. It not only has many bugs, it also lacks more than 90 features that are present in version 4.3 ("Pages 09"). One workaround that is to open the file with Pages for icloud (this is explcitly beta) and click tools|download a copy in Word format.  Pages 4.3, which is probably the version you have, can open Word documents.  Get a cup of coffee or a glass of wine before starting Pages for icloud: it is s-l-o-w.

  • How to create a new database after copying an existing database with a new name

    hi
i have an existing database and want to copy with a new name in sql server 2005 how do it is possible
    spose
i have a db name attached in sql server StoreManagementDB now i want to copy this database with all the transactions as StoreManagementDB_1.
    thanks

Use a two steps to use a backup file to restore a database with a new name.
----You need to have a full backup of your database:
    --Step 1:
    RESTORE FILELISTONLY
    FROM DISK = 'C:\bk\TEST.BAK'
--Find out the LogicalName of data file and log file
-- in this case: the data file: TEST and the log file LogicalName: TEST_log
--Both names will be used in the MOVE command
    --Step 2:
-- Restore the files for test1.
    RESTORE DATABASE test1
    FROM DISK = 'C:\bk\TEST.BAK'
    WITH RECOVERY,
    MOVE 'TEST' TO 'C:\bk\test1_Data.mdf',
    MOVE 'TEST_log' TO 'C:\bk\test1_Log.ldf'
    GO

Alright, I have a suggestion for improvement. We need a new forum section for complaints about the way Apple is treating us.
To make sure I'm being clear, let me give you an example of just such a post that may be included in such a section.
I ordered online the family packs of Leopard, iWork '08 and iLife '08 on November 6th. I received an email telling me my order had been shipped on November 7th.
On November 9th I decided to check the progress of my shippment by logging on to FedEx. To my surprise, it had been delivered! Not to me but another party. I could download a PDF from FedEx and see the signature.
After trying to deal with FedEx for a few days I was finally told to deal with Apple because they would have to initiate the investigation. Fine. These things happen.
On 11/13/2007 I spoke with an Apple Customer Service Representative and received an Apple Issue Number and Case Number. I was told that it should be resolved in a few days. It wasn't.
11/20/2007, Here's where it gets interesting. In talking with them again I explained that since my signature was not on the FedEx ticket it had not been delivered properly if at all. I explained that since FedEx was clearly at fault the package should be shipped again. Finally they agreed. I was told that my package would be shipped and to expect an email.
11/23/2007, I was told again that nothing would be shipped until after an investigation had been completed. So did they lie? I spoke with a manager who kept repeating that he was sorry for the mis-communication. That became very frustrating to say the least. Remember, FedEx requires a signature. Without it or my permission to deliver somewhere else they must deliver to me and get my signature. The FedEx PDF clearly shows another persons signature.
Equally frustrating is the fact that they will not keep me informed as to the status. I have to call them and wait on hold. I did get a couple of emails with text along the lines of, "We continue to work with our carrier on your lost package. "
However, there is no way to reply to these form letters. The only way to stay in touch with Apple is to call and be put on hold.
Twice, after giving them my order number and being put on hold "while they look up my records" or whatever, the call was disconnected. I'm not saying they did so on purpose but the results were the same. Another call, another round of giving my order number and explaining to yet again a new person the details of the situation.
I've had many problems with Apple since becoming a customer in June of 2006 but I just can't let this go. I need a place to warn others. If you buy something, you might be better off buying it from a store instead of on-line. This kind of information is needed to warn others concerning the business practices of Apple should something go wrong. This is why we need a new section for putting forth such complaints.

It seems to me that the real problem here is with FedEx, as I have encountered similar types of problems with them in the past. Even though a signature is required, I have had packages left on my porch. When I enquired, someone had actually signed (i.e.forged) my name! Other times it has been left on my porch with some other signature. When I call to complain, FedEx just seems to think there is no problem as long as I got my package. They seem totally unconcerned even though a signature is required and I definitely did not authorize delivery with no signature. I have expressed my concerns directly to Apple, but have no way of knowing if it has done any good. I think this problem is worse with FedEx ground, as that is contracted out. Around here anyway, i think the drivers will sign the ticket and leave the package just so they won't have to make another trip. It's not right, and it's not supposed to happen this way, but i know it does.
Apple entrusted your package to FedEx in good faith that it would be delivered to you, and that your signature would be required for you to receive it. That should have resulted in you receiving it. however, due to a false signature, you did not. Clearly, FedEx is responsible.
If the package was supposedly delivered to your address, but has a false signature, I wonder if the driver might have signed the delivery ticket or gotten someone else to sign it and just left it on your porch or something like that. If so, it could have been subsequently stolen. If something like this happened, it might explain why things are so bogged down in the investigation at Apple. From their viewpoint, the package was delivered and a signature was obtained and they are probably being stonewalled by FedEx.
A user to user discussion forum such as Apple Discussions won't help with delivery problems. It's best to report them directly to Apple as you have done. If you continue to have problems, you can call Apple and ask to speak to Apple Customer Relations. They may well be able to cut through the red tape. You could also express your concern in the "Feedback to Apple" section. Maybe if enough people complain, they might consider awarding the shipping contract to someone else. Or perhaps the other shippers are even worse.
One of my recent shipments was evidently lost in a typhoon. But when I called Apple, a replacement was sent out immediately. This is more what I would expect of Apple, and you have every right to expect similar treatment.
If FedEx delivered to the wrong address and got a wrong signature, they should be expected to go back and retrieve the package. But if they delivered to your address and did not get your signature, then you would be well within your rights to go to your local Better Business Bureau and file a complaint against FedEx. That might possibly get some action of some sort. FedEx cannot ignore the BBB as easily as they can ignore you. If your signature was actually forged, you will certainly be able to prove that the signature on the delivery ticket is definitely not yours. And you could forward the BBB complaint to Apple. I don't know if this would help or just muddy the water, but it would put a little more pressure on FedEx I would think.
In the meantime, I would certainly speak to Apple Customer Relations and see if they can help you out here. They want happy Apple customers, and I think they would like to know about the extreme frustrations you are experiencing through no fault of your own.
I sympathize with your problems, and I hope that you are able to get them resolved soon.
    Good luck!

  • Does a new name for the internal HD make my Time Machine (and CCC) backups useless?

I have a replacement 1TB internal HD that I need to clone from my existing internal HD, using Carbon Copy Cloner. Initially I'll connect it in an external enclosure via USB, no questions on that.
I'd like to give the new HD itself a new name. Is there any way to have the new drive recognize all the corresponding data on my external drive Time Machine. Or will I have to start all over? I know that means I'd lose several months' worth of TM data.
As long as I'm asking about TM, does the same principle apply to the 1:1 clones made with CCC?
    Thanks for any help.

No problem with renaming the clone drive something else, in fact it's recommended.
However for best results I suggest doing so while option key booted from the clone, just in case.

My wifi is on and when it tries to find a wifi connection, the gray little circle just keeps spinning and will not detect our home wifi. I have tried to search for it and connect to it manually, but it will not search for the network name. I'm hoping I don't need a new phone so please help.

  • Guess I need a new hard drive...

I have no clue how, but suddenly my hard drive is shot. I opened my laptop the other day and expected my login page to come up (I keep it on sleep mode) and it was off. When I turned it on I got a grey screen with an old school mac logo (blinking folder and a ? mark).
I called tech support and learned that my hard drive is completely gone, cannot be retrieved and I need a new one ( PLEASE tell me they were wrong!!! lol). I tried booting from the start up disk and the installer couldn't find the drive to install to.
Where do I find a new hard drive? How much do they cost? Should I go to the mac genius or avoid them? Is there any way to pull files or photos off my old hard drive? Is it worth buying a new hard drive or should I just get a new computer at this point? I feel like I have a faulty used car that hit is 5 year mark and is just going to start dying off...piece by piece. Its so sad, I'm extremely depressed over all this.
Someone give me good news! Please?!

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.
While it sounds like your hard drive has indeed died, I would run the Apple hardware test to confirm. Find the original OS X disc that shipped with your system, which says "AHT Version x.x" in small print on the label. Insert it, and reboot holding the option key down, choose the Apple hardware test, click the arrow to the right and follow directions. Choose the extended test. Does that confirm/tell you anything about the hard drive?
Assuming your hard drive is indeed dead, you have several choices. You can have a local Apple store replace it, and they will only replace it with the same size drive. They will also keep the hard drive as a trade-in on a new one, which bothers some people. Dead or not they prefer a hard drive with personal data on it not go somewhere else, which would also be relevant if you want to have files extracted from the dead drive. Apple Authorized Service Providers can also replace the hard drive, and are more flexible to deal with. They may also install a hard drive you buy elsewhere. You can find the closest Apple store or AASP via http://www.apple.com/buy/locator/service/
Or, if you're handy, you can do it yourself. See these directions to determine if it's in your ballpark: http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Mac/PowerBook-G4-Al-17-Inch/HD-Replacement/55/6/
If you buy a hard drive yourself, you want a 2.5" notebook drive with a parallel ATA interface, not a serial ATA or SATA interface, which is quite popular today. Standard speed is 5400rpm, and for a slight price premium you can find 7200rpm drives, although the selection is declining due to manufacturers concentrating on SATA drives. Here are two sources at link:[OWC|http://eshop.macsales.com/Search/Search.cfm?Ne=5000&Ntt=2.5harddrive&Ntk=Primary&Ns=P_Price|0&N=6885] and link:[Newegg|http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=201015 0380+1035907889&name=ATA-6]. Depending on size you're talking $50 to $105 for a new hard drive, and additional if someone else installs it for you. Even if you have someone else install it, that's quite a bit less expensive than a new computer.
In terms of recovering data, there are some services that will recover whats on the hard drive, however, they are very proud of the services they provide and charge accordingly. You can scan these forums for recommendations. If you don't have a backup today, budget for an external hard drive too. You can see a selection at http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/on-the-go
Please post back with any questions.

  • I need a new hard drive for a 1.83 GHz (Core Duo) MacBook 13"

So the hard drive is toasted, and therefore I need a new one. The hard drive is a 661-5554 HDD,160GB,OSX 10.5 (REP) - 13inch Macbook. Is 160GB the biggest I can get? Or is there a better hard drive I can get that will suit my MacBook? Also, I don't have he osx cd because the lap top was a handy me down. They told me at apple that I can go to the genius bar and have them install the software. But I am wondering, is osx 10.5 the best this MacBook can do? Or can they put something better on it? Thanks guys!

You can put in a bigger hard drive. The only limit is the physical size. It must not be taller than 9.5mm. You can upgrade it to 10.6. You can order a Snow Leopard 10.6 install disk for $29 from the Apple Store as long as you have at least 1gb of RAM and 5gb of free space on your hard drive. http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A?mco=MTY3ODQ5OTY

Here are instructions on replacing the hard drive in a MacBook with a removable battery. http://creativemac.digitalmedianet.com/articles/viewarticle.jsp?id=45088
To transfer your current hard drive I like the free application Carbon Copy Cloner. It makes a bootable copy of everything on your hard drive http://www.bombich.com/index.html You'll need a cheap SATA external hard drive case. Put the new drive in the case then format and partition the new drive and clone your old drive to the new one. Check that it's set up right by booting up from the external drive. Then replace your old hard drive with the new one and put your old one in the external case.
Here's a cheap SATA external hard drive case on Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/SATA-Hard-Drive-Case-Enclosure/dp/B001AAVA08/ref=pd_cp_e_0

  • 2008's MacBook Pro needs a new battery?

    Hi!
My client said his four years MacBook Pro's old battery doesn't last long these days -- about 20 minutes and then shuts off. No warnings or anything. Even the status show 25% battery power left. Does this old MBP need to get a new battery or need to reset/fix the charge status? If it just needs a reset/fix, then what's the best/correct way to do that? Also, Mac OS X 10.5.8 has all the updates. If it needs a new battery, then what's the best place to get a new one in Los Angeles/L.A. or Orange County/O.C. area? From a local Apple store?
    Thank you in advance.

Thank you. Is there a specific battery model to buy for this old MBP? Hmm, maybe it is just easier to go to a local Apple store and get a battery replacement and to get help (especially when bringing in the old MBP) from one of the Apple store guys (hopefully, expired AppleCare won't matter).

  • Powershell command to migrate Exchange 2007 mailbox databases with a legacy name, & import them into a new 2007 instance, with a new name.

Hi All. I am currently at the later stage of provisioning a new CCR Exchange 2007 migration (to
virtualise old Exchange 2007 hardware) for 5,000 users & have a quick question.
I have created around 15 newly named storage groups, & have named 1 new DB per group, with the same name (let's say New-DB-1), residing within them.  The problem I have, is the old legacy DB's have different names (let's say Old-DB-1) & I need
to import them into the new storage groups, to match the new names. So far I can import/export between old & new OK if both old & new DB names\folders etc. names marry up perfectly, but are unable to if there not the same. Does anyone have any thoughts
on how best to tackle this, as this is one of the final hurdles stopping the migration? Many Thanks, John

    Hi All
    Many Thanks for the feedback.
The terminology 'migrate' was used based around the fact I will be decommissioning the old 2007 physical environment. This is after moving all DB's over to the new newly created Virtual environment that will host all roles.
The solution I ended up using yesterday, was the following:
    1) Dismounted the relevant named DB (NEWDB) in the new environment.
    2) I then ticked the 'This database can be overwritten by a restore option' box.
    3) Copied over the old named DB (OLDDB) to the same location, & overwrote using the new name (NEWDB).
    4) Re-mounted the (NEWDB).
    5) Ran the following 2 PowerShell commands:
     Get-mailbox –database OLDDB | move-mailbox –targetdatabase NEWDB -configurationonly:$true
     Get-MailboxDatabase NEWDB | ResetSearchIndex.ps1 -force
    6) Checked to make sure the clients were working ok, in the now the new (NEWDB) environment.
Rich: Many thanks for your PS script, which I will test with future DB moves & provide feedback
