Mail 2.1 Locked?

Started trying to delete a group in my addressbook. Couldn't. Then I clicked on my mail and it was locked on a Mailbox. That particular mail box was highlited. Tried to create a new user account but only got the rolling curser. Nothing would open.
Just now the names, etc. in that one Mailbox popped up, but the curser is still rolling when placing it on the mail screen, and if I click on the screen, another screen pops up with all of my addresses that says "All". click back on this screen and that screen disappears until I click on my mail screen.
Any help with what happened. I thought maybe the program got corrupted so I reinstalled Leopard tonight, but no change.

Sonny:
Try the following: download and run BatChmod on the Mail folder (or the entire User/Library folder) with the settings shown here, putting your administrator login name, long or short, in the owner and group sections. You can either type in the path to the folder or just drag the folder into that field. Then try again.

I am sending a mass e-mail out to my mailing list and the mail program gets locked up and stops responding before sending the e-mail.  How can I fix this issue?  I have done it in the past successfully.

Holly, how many are you sending to?
Are you using the To; or BCC: field?
    Individual names or Groups?
I suspect one malformed address at the moment without much else to go on.

  • Checking Comcast e-mail results in locked mailbox...

    Hello.
I got my iPhone activated in 4 minutes without a hitch, thankfully. I also configured my e-mail accounts fairly easily without difficulty and I have no problems checking and sending e-mail with iPhone. I am using 6 e-mail accounts, including .Mac, Yahoo!, Gmail, Earthlink, Comcast, and a private domain e-mail account on a hosted unix web server. After checking e-mail on my Comcast.net account using iPhone (and, if there is something in the inbox), the Comcast mailbox becomes locked and I am unable to check it using my computer (Entourage client); I can still check it with iPhone though. The lock gets released in about 20 minutes or so, and I can then check it using Entourage, but it becomes locked again after iPhone rechecks it. I experienced the same problem on my private e-mail account on my hosted domain (unix server), which was using POP3. The problem went away when I changed the iPhone protocol for this account from POP to IMAP (but left as POP on Entourage). I can't seem to get my Comcast settings on iPhone to work with IMAP - only POP seems to work, so I’m stuck with the intermittent mailbox locking problem.
I don't see this locking behavior on any of the other accounts, including Earthlink’s POP server. There is something peculiar about the way the Comcast POP3 server is handling the iPhone request. Anyone have any insights?
    Thanks,
    Stu

Thank you for the replies. I understand this behavior of the POP3 protocol, and how it is possible for some mailboxes to become locked by one client, preventing another from accessing the mailbox until it becomes unlocked. However, the effect on the Comcast account lasts for about 15 minutes. It doesn't happen on some of my other POP accounts, such as Earthlink.
Furthermore, it only occurs when iPhone checks for mail on my Comcast account first (then, it becomes locked and I can't check it from my desktop computer). When my desktop computer checks the Comcast account first, it is not locked afterward, and iPhone (or any other device) has no problem checking for mail immediately afterward.
The likely conclusion is that the iPhone behaves differently from the desktop client (in this case Mail and/or Entourage), causing the POP mailbox to lock (with Comcast, at least). One is tempted to deduce that iPhone is not signaling a release of the mailbox that Comcast expects. Perhaps Earthlink has a much shorter "keep alive" than Comcast, so this behavior doesn't occur.
    Thanks,
    Stu

  • Mail 6.1 locks up, other problem

After updating to 10.8.2, my Mail application locks up after clicking on the reply arrow within an existing email in a thread.  It happened twice, I used Force Quit and reopened, then repaired permissions in Disk Utility, tried again, it locked up again, simply quit the application and restarted.  But it keeps locking up.
While I can move the cursor around and switch to another application, I cannot access anything in the existing  email thread window.  However, I can look at other emails from the main window.  Very weird.
To be even more descriptive, I can open an individual email and respond to that.  But when I try to respond to an email that is in the right sidebar as part of a thread, that's where it locks up.  Problem is repeatable every time I try it.
I have a 21.5 inch iMac, mid-2010 with 4 GB memory, 3.6 Ghz Core i5.  No plugins or software that interacts with Mail.  Never had a real software problem after upgrades (yep, lucky!), Mac user since 1986.  Have not contacted Applecare since I can work around this problem for a while, and don't want to load up the system during what could be a heavy period for support.
    Steve
p.s. -- while minor, I have another problem with jpeg attachments.  There is an option to add photos to iPhoto from a Mail message, but it no longer works after upgrading to 10.8.2.  I have to download all photos into the Downloads folder, open iPhoto and drag files into that application.  I regularly use the short cut directly from Mail, and noticed this right away.  I have iPhoto 9.4.

Are you using multiple accounts?  If so then I may have the solution.
My accounts were set up within mail preferences on 10.8.1.  When I upgraded to 10.8.2 Mail froze, nothing I did would unfreeze it.  So after I return my new MacBook and got a new one the same thing happened again!
Here is what I did this time:
    1)     Create a new user profile
    2)     Put in your main iCloud log in
    3)     Do not add your other iCloud adresses using Mail instead go to System Preferences and Mail, Contacts, Calendars and add them there
Please note this will not work on your existing log in as when you go to System Preferences your old email accounts will cause it to crash as well as mail.
What might have been easier is if Apple had got mail to come up with a message like 'iCloud accounts should be added through system preferences' instead of crashing every time.  Of course it does make you wonder why mail even has a preferences with an option to add accounts?!
    Hope this helps.

  • Mac Mail/iPhone mail conflict or locking issue

    Greetings!
I recently an iPhone. I previously was using a Pearl with RIM's BIS setup to access my email (verizon/yahoo POP3 acct). Since I moved to the iPhone, I've noticed whenever it accesses my email account, the Mac Mail displays the pop-up window requesting the password saying the email server had rejected it. About a minute or so after the iPhone is done with the email account, I'm able to enter the password and Mac Mail can access the account.
This is a POP3 email account. I never had this issue with Mac Mail while using the Pearl, it only started after switching to the iPhone.
    Config Info:
    iPhone 1.0.2
    iMac/OS 10.4.10
    Mac Mail 2.1.1
    Verizon/Yahoo Acct POP3 (incoming.yahoo.verizon.net/outgoing.yahoo.verizon.net)
Has anyone else seen this problem and is there a solution for it? I've seen a couple close hits in this forum, but no direct hits.
Any help will be greatly appreciated!
    Lee

I consider it a bug because after the auto-retrieval on the iPhone is complete, it still retains a lock on the mailbox causing mail.app to generate that error. Once the check is complete, that lock should be released. I'm speculating on this being the source of the problem, but I have verified the behavior (not necessarily the problem) by closely observing when the problem occurs.
I had a Blackberry Pearl for over a year and while I only had used it for a short time on my iMac before I replaced it with the iPhone, I never had this issue with the Pearl. There too I had mail.app on the iMac always running.
As for this thread - my bad. When I started it I wasn't sure where the problem was (mail.app or iPhone), but I should have just picked one of the other threads. Sorry about that!

  • SL Mail IMAP account locks server mailbox

I have just installed Snow Leopard and updated Mail.
I have a main IMAP account here at work which I set to access new mail only manually so that I could access the mailbox from home on a different machine or indeed on walkabout at work from my touch ipod without closing Mail down here. This worked fine. Now the account is still set to get new mail manually but in fact is updating automatically and as a result locking the mailbox on the server. It looks like the manual setting does not work.
So what can I do other than shut down Mail every time I leave the room? In the interim I've set up a Pop account instead and deactivated the IMAP one. But I dare not remove the IMAP account and set it up again from scratch, which was my next idea, until someone tells me whether it will delete all the mailboxes on my machine as it suggests.

having the same problems as everyone else, have a aol imap account on mac mail program. pass word is not even being stored in keycain & when i go to mail preferences pass word is not listed under imap account. when i type in my pass word & save it just disappears when i recheck. whenever i restart my computer my postage stamp icon on dock keeps bouncing when i click stamp it asks for pass word. when i type in pass word and check on remember in key chain it does not accept. if i do not check remember in key chain i am ok again but only untill i restart my computer. then i have to go through same process again. i have telephone support with my computer and was on phone for 3 hrs last week but no help yet. was told a report would be sent to engernerring dept. if we are all having problems then i think it is a bug & we might need to wait for a apple software update. just hope i and others have not made problem worse by trying things. if anyone does have a solution to my password problem please get back to me.

  • Help!  My Mac Mail account is locking up, says "Copying message to Outbox"

I can receive e-mail but not send. When I try to send, Mac Mail "locks up" with the message "Copying message to Outbox". Any suggestions on how to fix?

    You’re welcome.
Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all the filesystem issues, if any, and ensuring that there’s enough space available on the startup disk (a few GB, plus the space needed to make a backup copy of the Mail folder), try this:
    1. Quit Mail if it’s running.
    2. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/. Make a backup copy of this folder, just in case something goes wrong, e.g. by dragging it to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down. This is where all your mail is locally stored.
    3. Locate Envelope Index and move it to the Trash. If you see any other “Envelope Index”-named file there, delete it as well.
    4. Move any “IMAP-”, “Mac-”, or “Exchange-” account folders to the Trash. Note that you can do this with IMAP-type accounts because they store mail on the server and Mail can easily re-create them. DON’T trash any “POP-” account folders, as that would cause all the mail stored there to be lost.
    5. Open Mail. It will tell you that your mail needs to be “imported”. Click Continue and Mail will proceed to re-create Envelope Index — Mail says it’s “importing”, but it just re-creates the index if the mailboxes are already in Mail 2.x format.
    6. As a side effect of having removed the IMAP account folders, those accounts may be in an “offline” state now. Do Mailbox > Go Online to bring them back online.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. That is, ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder, i.e. /Users/username/Library.

  • Sound issues with SMS; voice mail alerts and "lock sounds"

Every since upgrading to the latest version (on my original iPhone) the sounds do not work for such things as incoming text messages; new voice mail messages and the lock sound when I shut the phone off.
I've turned the phone off and on again; I've set and re-set the sound settings and everything looks like I should be getting sounds but it's like I have it on vibrate mode, which I don't.
I'm perplexed.... has this happened to anyone else?
    Thanks!

I have had the same problem as well. I can usually fix it by playing a song from the iPod. After I do this the sounds work again, still annoying though!!

  • My Mail 5.3 locks up upon launch every time.

The mail app on my iMac locked up every time I launch it. Messages are never loaded. Using 10.7.5. Never had any issues before. Any thoughts?

Try this maintenance procedure for keynote which has solved many issues.
Every stage must be completed in performed in the following order:
    1
    Close all iWork applications
    2
Uninstall all the iWork applications; this must be done with an application remover tool to delete the installation properly. Appcleaner is known to work correctly for this purpose, it is free and can be downloaded from here: Appcleaner Download
    3
    empty the trash
    4
shutdown the Mac and restart. After the start up chime, hold down the shift key until the apple logo appears
let the Mac complete the start up procedure completely, it will take longer than usual as the hard drive is being repaired
    5
go to;   Applications > Utilities > Disc Utility > First Aid > Repair Disc Permissions
when this is completed restart the Mac normally
    6
Reinstall iWork or Keynote as appropriate using the original discs or logging into the Mac App Store and installing from there
    Post back on your results.

  • Mail and Safari locking up

Hello all- OK, I'm a new user, just converted to Mac a few months ago, I'm having a bad problem. While surfing or getting mail, my iMac seems to lock up. It doesn't happen all the time, just after a little bit of time. The Email thing keeps spinning, and I can't force quit. I will try to load a page, it will not load. I can quit Safari, but if I relaunch it it doesn't launcg. The icon just bounces. I have to power off my computer manually, it will not shut down normally. After I reboot everything works fine for a bit, then it all happens again. I know the internet is working OK, because I can still listen to iTunes streaming radio. Please help a new Mac user?

    Hello Ron.
Although you may not have had any other choice, a hard or improper shut down is not good for a hard drive under any platform.
Check Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption for system troubleshooting procedures and when doing so, follow all steps/instructions in the order provided.
In addition, check Multiple applications quit unexpectedly or fail to launch which may be helpful and Maintaining Mac OS X for recommended maintenance for OS (which isn't much) for future reference.

  • Mail on iPad2 locked up

When I go to settings, and click on Mail, it does not respond. The last time I used Mail, I was trying to email some photos, then realized the mail was turned off. When I go to settings it appears to be locked up.

    Try the basic stuff....
Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
Quit the Settings App and restart. In order to quit or close apps - Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Quit/close open apps by double tapping the home button and the task bar will appear with all of you recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner to close the apps. Restart the iPad.
