Mail and Gmail - server connection issues

My wife uses her Mac Mail to manager her Gmail account. She frequently gets errors where Mail cannot connect to the Gmail server. Sent mail sits in her outbox for hours and every time Mac Mail tries to send it she gets the 'cannot connect to Gmail server' error. After a time it connects and goes.
I have tried setting it up as IMAP and POP. No good.
Any ideas?
Thank you.

I've noticed the same problem. I'm moving to an area where my isp is not (no earthlink hi-speed in Marietta, GA :P) and thought it wise to switch my primary email to a free account. I'm debating if gmail is worth this hassle.
However, Google's support suggests clearing the CAPTCHA on the account, which is the challenge-response test used to determine if the user is human (it's usually a squiggly string of text or numbers you have to enter). This is odd, but I suppose makes sense if it's part of every gmail account. You can find how to do this in their help section.
worth a try anyway.

  • Apple Mail and Gmail IMAP

With the iPhone coming to Verizon soon, I'd like to move back to Apple Mail from Gmail, but still want to keep Gmail as my source because my domain is setup with Google Apps but mostly because of the unparalleled spam filtering Gmail has. My problem is that even though I've configured Apple Mail exactly as Google recommends (shown below), I still have some issues.
From the Mail menu, click Preferences > *Accounts > Mailbox Behaviors*
    Drafts:
Store draft messages on the server > *do NOT check*
    Sent:
Store sent messages on the server > *do NOT check*
    Junk:
Store junk messages on the server > checked
Delete junk messages when > Never
    Trash:
Move deleted messages to the Trash mailbox > *do NOT check*
Store deleted messages on the server > *do NOT check*
I want to have true IMAP functionality here, but I'm not getting it. Sent messages work fine...if I send a message, it shows up in Apple Mail in the Sent folder and when I go to Gmail it is also in the Sent folder. BUT...when I delete a message in Apple Mail it goes to the Gmail *All Mail* folder (in Apple Mail and Gmail) and never shows up in the Gmail Trash on either Apple Mail or Gmail...where it should. I've tried changing the settings under *Apple Mail > Trash* but that doesn't fix the problem.
I realize some of you might be inclined to say "It's Google problem...ask there" but I'm hoping a Gmail user here might have had this same issue before. Even as a dedicated Apple person for many years, I still can't give up Gmail and their spam filtering that Apple Mail can't come close to. Thanks for any suggestions.

Thanks, Andy. I should have posted a closure statement on this thread as I finally figured everything out. The most frustrating thing is Google's own advice at http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=78892# couldn't further from correct. After many hours of experimenting with settings, I finally came up with the correct ones. In fact, I'm in the process of writing an article about it since there is simply no definitive guidance on the web that I've been able to find in the time I've searched.
Your comments are on target...everything on the *Behaviors Tab* needs to be checked (excepts Notes) and the *Delete when* settings must be set to Never. But there are a few other things that must be done, including some changes on Gmail Settings before Mail and Gmail will be perfectly synchronous. I'll post the entire solution on this forum when I finish the graphics.

  • Mail and SMTP server settings of ASA Certificate Authority for cisco anyconnect VPN

                       Dear All,
i have the folloing case :
i am using ASA as Certificate authority for cisco anyconnect VPN users, the authentication happens based on the local database of the ASA,
i want to issue a new certificate every 72 hours for the users ,and i want to send the one time password via email to each user.
so what the setting of the mail and smtp server should be ,
was i understand i should put my smtp server ip address then i have to create the local users again under(Remte VPN VPN--Certificate management--Local certificate authority --Manage user Database) along with their email addresses to send the one time passsword to them via their emails.
i sent the email manually ,hwo can automate sending the OTP to our VPN users automatically vi their emails?
    Best regards,

    Thanks Jennifer.
I did manage to configure LDAP attribute map to the specific group policy.
Nevertheless, I was thinking whether I can have fixed IP address tied to individual user.
Using legacy Cisco VPN Client, I can do it using IPSEC(IKEv1) Connection profile, where I set Pre-Shared Key and Client Address Pools. Each Client Address Pools has only 1 fix IP address.
Example: let say my username is LLH.
Connection Profile for me is : LLH-Connection-Profile, my profile is protected by preshared key.
Client Address Pool for me is : LLH-pool, and the IP is 172.16.1.11
Only me know the preshared key and only me can login with my Connection Profile.
Using AnyConnect, I have problem. User can use any connection profile because I cannot set preshared key for AnyConnect. In that case, I cannot control who can use my Connection Profile and pretend to be me.
    Example:
AnyConnect Connection Profile for me is : LLH-Connection-Profile, without any password
Client Address Pool for me is : LLH-pool, IP is 172.16.1.11
Any body can use LLH-Connection-Profile, login with another user name, let say user-abc which is a valid user in LDAP server. In that case, ASA assign 172.16.1.11 to user-abc and this user-abc can access server which only allow my IP to access.
I hope above description can paint the scenario clearer.
Thanks in advance for all the help and comment given.

  • IBM WPS: Error While Creating App and Int Server Connections in JDev 10g

    Hi,
I have been struggling to create App Server and Int Server connections in JDeveloper 10.1.3.4 without any luck.
The JDeveloper is present on VM ware machine from which I'm trying to establish the connections to remote server where SOA Suite 10g is installed on IBM Websphere.
    My Settings:
    App Server:
    Connection Type: Standalone OC4J 10.1.3
RMI: tried WC_defaulthost port, 6003, RMI default port (How do I get the actual value of RMI on IBM Websphere and does this really make a difference?)
Connection test fails with Mbean error. Ignored this error as documented in Installation guide.
    Int Server:
Used the above App Server connection, gave the http port value of 9700 (also the WC_defaulthost on IBM Websphere)
Connection test fails for App Server, BPEL PM Server and ESB Server.
I have gone through other threads where different workarounds were suggested but none of them worked for me. The workaround of adding the property ipaddr with the value 0.0.0.0 in opmn.xml doesn't hold good here as IBM WPS doesn't have OPMN.
Please suggest a working solution for this issue.

  • Powerpoint web sharing fails with "some presenting features are unavailable due to server connectivity issues"

    Hi,
I am having problems getting PowerPoint sharing working with Lync 2013. My setup is as follows
Lync 2013 Enterprise pool (november 2013 updates) on Windows 2012 and
    Windows 2012 webapp farm
    Kemp HLB
Everything is working ok, including whiteboards and application sharing, but i cannot get the powerpoint sharing to work. I always get the "some presenting features are unavailable due to server connectivity issues" for internal or external
    users.
The webapp looks healthy and there are no errors in the Lync server or the webapp event log. Discovery urls can be accessed and i have put the .net 3.5 as suggested in a few forums.
When a user starts the PowerPoint it successfully loads the file to the Lync file share and request goto the webapp server. I am using a HLB which shows me that requests are forwarded to the webapp farm. I have removed the HLB for testing and get the same
    results.
I did log this with the forum a month or so ago, but I had a file upload issue then which is now solved, but the powerpoint sharing is not.
    any ideas?

  • SQL Server Connection Issue

I've tried going through the steps to resolve the issue, but I am still coming up blank. The part that I am not understanding is the, "A non-recoverable error occurred during a database lookup." part.
Is this a security problem? I can establish an ODBC connection to the server as well as connect and query through visual studio, however when trying to run it through one of our custom programs, it throws this error message.
A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider:
TCP Provider, error: 0 - A non-recoverable error occurred during a database lookup.)

There are many reasons of SQL server connectivity issue. Refer checklist to find out the real cause of connectivity issue.
    1. Check SQL services are running
    2. Check SQL Browser service is running
    3. Check remote connections are enabled
    4. Network connectivity between database & application servers by TRACERT command
    5. Check TCP/IP protocol enabled at SQL server
    6. Check talent connectivity – telnet <IP address> <port no on SQL server running>
    7. Check UDP port 1434 is open or not on SQL Server
    8. Check firewall is running or not Check
    9. If firewall running, SQL Server & UDP port must be added in exception in firewall
    10. Run SQL Discovery report on machine SQL server installed, to check you are using correct instance name to connect( default \named) -http://mssqlfun.com/2013/02/26/sql-server-discovery-report/

  • How to best set up a mail and calendar server for a church

I am the IT guy for a smaller church of 200 regular attendees.  We want to start hosting our own mail and calendar server.  We bought a mac mini and installed mac os x server.  So far I have enabled the mail, calendar, and contacts sections of the server but we aren't live quite yet (domain is not pointed at the server yet).  My question is, I do not know much about profile manager or open directory, would those benefit me at all?  I do not wish to manage devices, I just want to make the most use out of the computer as a mail server primarily.  I have found some limitations on users and groups where I wish I could do more (such as creating mailing lists that include e-mails that are not hosted from within the server without creating a user that forwards to personal e-mail for every person).
Would open directory and/or profile manager add more functionality to the computer as a mail server?
    Thank you

    @camelot
What is it exactly open directory will give me that I cannot do with the regular software in this regard?  I am not sure what you mean by a signle shared mailbox and calendar.
    @cpragman
Google apps for business was something I was looking into at one point but decided not to use it.  Once we grow more I can see us moving over to it but with just maybe 5 people tops having a real e-mail address it seems a little overkill.  (I apologize, I omitted that from my original question, i only put in the number of attendees)
    @Lincdavis
Fortunately I don't care about whether they can create it themselves or not .  And your comment about creating a sharing-only user.  Do you mean for every external e-mail I want in a mailing list, I need to create a user for them (with services disabled) and then change mail options to forward to their personal e-mail?
Then go back to groups, create a group that can be e-mailed, and add those users to it?
    Thanks

  • How do I keep duplicate messages in Mail and Gmail?

For the past few years messages would appear in both my Mail and Gmail inboxes.  If I deleted a message in Gmail, the duplicate would REMAIN in Mail. Therefore, I could keep some messages in my gmail account that pertained to work and delete their duplicates in Mail (since I wouldn't need them at home). Likewise, I could keep some messages organized in my Mail folders and delete their counterparts in the Gmail account.
At some point I must've downloaded an update or something because the accounts are now totally synced.  If I delete a message in my Gmail inbox (or even move it to a Gmail folder), it vanishes from my Mail inbox.
I know this is how most people like these programs to work together, but is there a way to revert it back to the way it was?  I tried toggling off POP, then testing it (didn't work).  Then I toggled off IMAP (still didn't work).  Then I toggled both of them off (still didn't work).  My Mail account is listed as IMAP for what it's worth.

Try posting this in the 10.7 Mail forum. You'll get more help there.

  • RSS feeds between Apple Mail and Gmail

I was wondering if this is possible or if this even exists.
I am subscribed to RSS feeds in Apple Mail which I love reading on my iMac. But when I'm at the office on a Windows machine I can only read my RSS feeds through Gmail. It's hard to keep track of what I haven't read and have read.
Is there a way to sync which RSS reeds which are read/unread with Apple Mail and Gmail?

  • Mail and Gmail issues in Snow Leopard

I've used Gmail with Mail for years, and it has suddenly stopped behaving. Mostly it takes *forever* for a message to be sent, but downloading messages can also take it's sweet time. I have several Gmail address I check, all are doing this. iPad and iPhone both work fine, so the issue seems to be isolated to the laptop.
I'm running Snow Leopard on a MacBookPro from mid-2009.
    Many thanks for help.

Yes.  I'm having a whole series of problems with Mail.app and GMail.  The problems are pretty well documented (links below), but I haven't seen any good fixes or heard any indication that Apple is taking them seriously.

In addition to archived emails returning to the inbox, I'm seeing significant delays in new mail appearing in my inbox:  sometimes as long as hours after the mail appears on my iPhone and in the GMail web console.

  • Mail and Gmail- archiving issues

Mail doesn't seem to understand the 'archiving' feature of my Gmail account. I'm trying to set up Mail for the first time and my inbox is being flooded with all of my archived emails, and my sent mail. I don't know how to get it to reflect my Gmail account, or whether that's at all possible with Mail.. Is there a way?

  • Mail and Gmail IMAP

Hello, having weird and annoying issues with Mail application.
Sometimes my ports just switch by themselves from 587 to 25 for SMTP. Is there a reason for it? Any fixes? Can't provide more details on this, very random.
After working 3 or so days my Gmail account stops working. Asks for passwords but it never accepts it. My office POP account also stops working. Have to restart the mac couple times to get the connections working again.
Are there any recommendations? Thanks in advance.

In the list of available SMTP servers to use as the Outgoing Server, is there more than one entry for the Gmail server? If or when pared down to only one, have you selected "use this server only"?
What model Mac are you using, and how much free, available, disk space do you have on the hard drive, or if partitioned, on the boot partition?

  • Mail and GroupWise set up issues

    Hi,
I use GroupWise for my school e-mail. I have been able to set up my gmail with POP on Mail but I keep having issues trying to set up my school's e-mail. I looked up the set up options here:
    http://www.newschool.edu/at/help/helpdesk_doc/popmail.html
I did everything that is listed. When setting it up in Mail the incoming server set up works perfectly. But when I try to set up the outgoing server it just keeps telling me it's failing to connect.
Also on a side note I would prefer not to set up the account with IMAP. That's what a friend suggested I try and I did that a couple months ago but I just hated the way it works with Mail and even led to me going back to using just online Gmail. But I did miss the nice interface of Mail so I am trying again to figure this out.
Any help would be great! Thanks

    Thanks for the reply.
For some reason 587 didn't allow the incoming server to work. But when I did un-check the SSL in advanced options it automatically put 110 for the port (which I changed at first to 587). After 587 didn't work, I tried 110 out and it seems to be working, but I'm not sure if the outgoing server is working.
Also, for some reason none of the e-mails from the GroupWise server are loading on to Mail.
I've been searching everything (GroupWise options and there Help & FAQ section, all over google, etc.), trying to find a way to enable POP on GroupWise but there isn't any option like that. Maybe I am missing something?
Also at this point even if I enable POP, if my outgoing server doesn't work I will only be able to receive e-mails but not send them, correct?
I really am trying to find some sort of discussion where someone else had the same problem as me, but no such luck. Seems pretty complicated because this should be easy to set up.
Anyway, once again any help at all is greatly appreciated.

  • Apple Mail and gMail (part two)

When I first set up Apple Mail for my new gMail account, I sent a reply to one of the first emails that were downloaded and cc'd myself because I wanted to see what the file I attached looked like to the other guy. That message has been sitting in my gMail inbox for a week now and won't download. gMail support has not responded to me and I haven't been able to find any kind of setting on gMail that might control this. I also sent myself a couple of test messages during setup that are also just sitting in the inbox.
    Anyone here experienced this too?
    Robin in Short Pump

This is a Gmail issue. Mail has no bearing on it. Gmail POP access doesn’t work like a normal POP mail server would. Here are some of its idiosyncrasies:
    1. Messages downloaded by any conventional POP mail client are marked as downloaded at the server (but not as read on the web), and no longer available to either the same or any other POP mail client.
    2. To make already downloaded messages available for POP access again, you must go to Gmail’s Settings > Forwarding and POP page, select Enable POP for all mail, and click Save Changes, which causes everything (and I mean everything) still on the server to be downloaded again.
    3. The Mail > Preferences > Accounts > Advanced > Remove copy from server settings have absolutely no effect on the messages stored on Gmail’s server. Gmail ignores any requests to delete messages from the server made by a POP client. What happens to the messages on the server after a POP client has downloaded them is determined by Gmail’s Settings > Forwarding and POP > When messages are accessed with POP setting alone. In the case of Gmail (and only in that case), I recommend turning OFF Remove copy from server in Mail, so that Mail doesn’t even try to remove any messages from the server, regardless of whether you do actually want already downloaded messages to be removed from the server after some time or not.
    4. Messages sent using the web interface will be downloaded by your POP mail client as if they were received messages. Although this may seem weird, it's good because it allows archiving all messages locally in Mail, regardless of how they were sent — as long as you don't access the same Gmail account with more than one POP mail client, that is. You can set up a rule in Mail to automatically route those messages to the appropriate Sent mailbox (or to any other mailbox for that matter) if that's what you want.
    5. Messages sent using a POP/SMTP mail client such as Mail are also treated as if they were incoming messages for POP purposes, just as in #4. What prevents them from being downloaded is that Gmail marks them as already downloaded immediately. Since they’re on the server nonetheless, already sent messages would be downloaded together with all the other messages on the server if proceeding as described in #2.
    6. A particular case of #5 are messages sent to yourself. Instead of putting a copy of the sent message in the server’s Inbox and making it available for download, both the sent and the “received” message on the server are actually one and the same, and hence, cannot be downloaded via POP for the reason explained in #5.
    7. Gmail allows POP accounts to be set up in a special way that avoids some of these issues while introducing others. If you only need POP access to the last 30 days of mail, you can configure Mail in “recent mode”, as described in How should I use POP on mobile or multiple devices?, i.e. by typing “recent:” (including the colon but not the quotes) at the beginning of the User Name field (not in the Email Address field) in Mail > Preferences > Accounts > Account Information. Configuring the account this way would allow Mail to download messages marked by Gmail as already downloaded (and download messages sent to yourself in particular), but it would also cause all sent messages (not just messages sent to yourself or through webmail) to be downloaded as if they were received messages.
