Mail and IMAP driving me mad! Is there a setup guide anywhere???

I am attempting to move over to using Apple's 'Mail' as an e-mail client instead of Microsoft Entourage, this is to start using the iCal and Address book apps as much as anything else, also starting to sync my Palm to these apps as well, perhapps to be ready for the iPhone!!
Mail seems to be a very confusing programme - and I've been using e-mail for more years than I can remember. It reminds me of trying to use Word - too helpful for its own good!
My old workflow: I am used to using POP accounts with Entourage. In the advanced tab on the account section I could click a checkbox to:
"alow on-line access (show account in folder list)"
This let me check and delete spam and large e-mails before downloading them to the local computer. Very simple and quick to use, Apple-L would update the folder view and then Apple-K to download the e-mails I wanted to my local computer
I can't find an equivalent in Mail so I guess I have to use an IMAP account. My ISP does provide this service - when I'm away from my regular e-mail computer I can use a web interface to acces my e-mail from anywhere.
So I start configuring my Mail accounts to use IMAP. What is very confusing is where do I actually 'see' the contents of various folders on the server and how these relate to the folders on the local Mac.
I think I have figured out that the drawer type folders at the top of the screen - ie Inbox - point at the inbox on the server and the black @ things towards the bottom show any other folders on the server, such as sent, etc. I've played around with creating and deleting new folders br right clicking on the @ icons and they do appear on the server when I check them via a web browser.
What is not clear at all is how to manage e-mail I want to move from the server to archive or store tham on my local machine. Clicking on GET mail doesn't seem to do anything. I can drag and drop mail from the server folders to a local folder and it then looks like it has been moved, ie it 'disappears' from the Inbox folder. However - when I check the server through a web interface the e-mails are still there...! Meaning they would build up over time and I'd have to delete them via web access which seems crazy to me.
There seems to be absolutely no help to be found from within Apple Help, so can anyone throw me a lifeline, or should I just go back to using Entourage?
At least Entourage alows you to use the cursor keys to move up and down sub-folders...

I'm not sure how you consider Entourage or any other email client that you have used less confusing than Mail but the layout in the mailboxes drawer for an IMAP type account is similar between Mail and Entourage and the behavior with an IMAP type account is identical with all email clients. The only exception between Mail and Entourage in this regard is the location of the account's Inbox mailbox.
With Mail, the Inbox mailbox for all accounts regardless the account type is located under Inbox in the mailboxes drawer.
This let me check and delete spam and large e-mails before
downloading them to the local computer. Very simple and quick
to use, Apple-L would update the folder view and then Apple-K
to download the e-mails I wanted to my local computer
There is something similar with Tiger Mail. Select Command-I. If you are accessing multiple accounts with Mail, select the POP account via the Account selection.
Under the Messages on Server tab at Show Messages, select All messages on POP server.
This reveals From, Subject, Date and Size only for all messages on the server. You can select a message or messages and then Remove from Server.
An IMAP type account will not help in this regard since the account's Inbox mailbox is synchronized with the server. Messages aren't received in the way messages are downloaded with a POP type account.
My ISP does provide this service - when I'm away from my
regular e-mail computer I can use a web interface to acces
my e-mail from anywhere.
I'm sure your ISP provides the same with a POP type account but you cannot keep messages sent via webmail access or any other server stored messages besides received messages synchronized with the email client used to access the account.
So I start configuring my Mail accounts to use IMAP. What is very
confusing is where I can actually 'see' the various folder on the server
and how these relate to the folders on the local Mac.
As provided, the account's Inbox mailbox is located under Inbox in the mailboxes drawer which cannot be changed. All server stored mailboxes are located under the IMAP account's icon in the mailboxes drawer which is identical to Entourage.
Clicking on GET mail doesn't seem to do anything.
Clicking on Get Mail is no different for any other account type. Selecting Get Mail checks the incoming mail server for new messages. Selecting Inbox or the account's Inbox mailbox under Inbox in the mailboxes drawer also
synchronizes with the server (for the account's Inbox mailbox only) with an IMAP type account.
I can drag and drop mail from the server folders to a local folder
and it then looks like it has been moved, ie it 'disappears' from
the Inbox folder. However - when I check the server through a
web interface the e-mails are still there...! Meaning they would
build up over time and I'd have to delete them via web access
which seems crazy to me.
Transferring messages from the account's Inbox mailbox or from any other server stored mailbox to an "On My Mac" location mailbox which is stored locally on the hard drive stores the transferred messages locally on the hard drive and removes the messages from the server at the same time but there is a delay with the actual removal from the server process. If you want this to be instant, you can take the account offline and back online and the same occurs when quitting and relaunching Mail. When launching Mail when connected to the internet, all server stored messages/mailboxes are synchronized with the server and the same for when taking the account offline and online.
If you want to keep a copy of a message on the server and stored on the hard drive, you can select a message and use the Copy To command instead of the Move To command or dragging messages from a server stored mailbox to a mailbox stored locally on the hard drive.

  • Mail and IMAP, random problem

I am using Mail.app to connect to an IMAP account. The IMAP account is working fine.
Yesterday morning I started a draft, then quit Mail without saving the draft. Last night I opened Mail and it just gave me the "beach ball" continuously until I force-quit the application.
Since then I have rebooted and tried again but to no avail. Is there a way to reset Mail.app or get it to abandon whatever it is doing in the background? I have a feeling that it is tied to my not saving of the draft and just quitting but I'm not sure.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!

Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Network, choose Network Port Configurations from the Show popup menu, and make sure that the configuration used to connect to Internet appears at the top of the list.
Finally, try launching Mail under the following conditions (you may need to force quit it first if it’s running) and post back with your observations:
    1. Holding the Shift key down until the main window appears.
    2. With no Internet connection.

  • Orange E65 Wi-Fi and Livebox-driving me mad!

    Hi all,
I have recently bought a reconditioned Nokia E65 from Orange UK. The phone is nice, but there is one thing that's driving me mad! I cannot connect it to my wireless internet. I am on Orange home max package and I am trying to connect the E65 to the Livebox. The Livebox is set to accept both WEP and WPA. I have tried to setup the phone to connect with WPA but to no avail; it only seems to connect to the livebox if I use WPE and if I set the network mode to "ad-hoc". It seems to pick up an ip address (checked with IfInfo). However, where I try to access the internet I get the gateway error. I checked IfInfo again and I am not getting any subnet, gateway or DNS. I tried to manually set the IP(to the same value that the router assigned automatically before), so that I could also set the other values; I set gateway to 198.162.1.1 and subnet to 255.255.255.0 (as from Ipconfig on my pc) and I still get the gateway error. Is there anything I can do to fix this? Or will I have to send the phone back.
PS I set up the LAN at work (WPA mode) straight away using the wizard in a few seconds. so I really don't get what I am doing wrong.
Thanks in advance for your help

    Thanks for the reply Kraven,
I already have a cheap Belkin router/modem, but I need to use the Livebox in order to use the second phone line with the Home Max package (cheap/free internet phone calls).
I think the problem here is with the Nokia E65 not the router. I have found loads of people posting on the net about this problem (on this forum too). And it does seem to happen with different routers too! Interesting thread here:

  • HT203164 i cannot burn a CD from my playlist and I am steaming mad.  There is no help on the internet for this.

I keep getting error 4310 when i try to burn a CD.  I checked all of the things the trouble shooting page said to check.  I have the latest version of Itunes, i have windows 8.  there was link to download some "fix it' software, but i wasnt sure if it was legit or not.
all i want to do is to burn some music, that i bought and paid for from Itunes.  Am i asking too much?

READ the entire article from which the thread was created and follow all the troubleshooting steps.
The issue is not with iTunes but rather with the computer.

  • Is LinkBucks a virus that infects apple computers? I have and is driving me mad

Everytime I try to open a page with any of the search engine machines (google, yahoo, google chrome etc) this page called LinkBuks keeps popping up and does not allow me to do anything else on the internet. Has anybody had the same problem?

See Eliminating browser redirects and advertisements. There are a number of possible explanations and fixes there, and some tests you can run to determine which are appropriate.

  • Lost Mail and now wants me to configure a new setup.

All my emails disappeared and now when I start mail it acts like I have to do the initial setup. The same thing has happened to iCal with all my calendars disappearing. My settings for Safari got messed up (stopped using tabs so I had to reset in preferences). What happened to my computer? Did a recent update go wonky?

I just had the same thing. And, all my bookmarks are gone in FireFox.
I had just tried to send an internal email... Mail hung up with the beach ball and so I eventually force quit.
Now, even my desktop picture is gone and other things. I still have 128 gigs of space so it's not a space issue.
Seems like some wacked up user account thing. What updates have occurred recently from Apple that would cause this (as it's happening to more than one person?)

  • Airport Extreme & X-Modem - is there a setup guide please?

I'm based in the UK and have recently purchased an X-Modem M3 ADSL modem to replace a Netgear router/modem in my home network. This modem will replace the Netgear and connect in to the WAN port of my Airport Extreme Base Station.
I can get the modem to connect and be recognised by the AEBS, to the point where the WAN port gets an IP address from my ISP.
However, from there, no matter what options I try, I cannot then get a DHCP scope up and running for my LAN and for those clients to connect to the internet.
I think its a problem with the DHCP/NAT/Bridge settings in the Airport Utility, so I was wondering if anyone has got this setup working and could offer some advice please as its driving me insane!
I've spoken to ADSL Nation, but as its an AEBS config issue, they've suggested phoning Apple.
    Thanks,
    Mike.

I'm thinking about getting tis combination too, this might help...

  • Increasingly loud "buzzing" is driving me mad!

Hey so I have a first generation core-duo Macbook. Don't get me wrong I love it like a child, but it has A LOT of problems at the moment. Most cosmetic (which I can live with until school is done), but one of them is driving me mad! There is this buzzing noise that comes from the rear-left area of my macbook. It is activated every time I input something and stops about 10-15 seconds after. This is very annoying when trying to write an essay, take notes in class, or do research in the library, I can clearly hear it all the time. The only way to make it go away is to fill my ears with music, but I really love my silence when doing school work. Any ideas?
And I don't think I want to try "http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/22091" because it explicitly states not to use on anything other than a 1st gen MBP. Sorry for this little rant but I'm never home when apple phone support is offered (I do have Apple care though!) any help will be greatly appreciated.

If you don't live near an Apple Store or authorized dealer, you will need to send it in. Apple will send you a box to ship it to the service depot. You don't need to pay any postage. You can leave your upgrades in it.

  • Exchange 2013 POP3 and IMAP connectivity issues 0x800CCC0F

    Hi all,
there's an Exchange 2013 server running without problems during "regular" use, but when it comes to POP3 and/or IMAP (we really need that for some systems), everything is fine until there's a message with an attachment of about 100kb or more.
We can poll messages with smaller attachments without problem, but bigger sizes won't work.
So for testing I tried POP3 within Outlook Express, it gives Error 0x800CCC0F
Telnet to TCP110 simply breaks up the connection when I try "retr"
IMAP shows those messages as "to be deleted", but they are accesible within OWA.
Test-PopConnectivity (also for IMAP) runs smoothly and successfully.
Firewall is opened for all connections.
Problem is and has always been there. The server is updated to the newest SP/updates.
I tried both 110/143 and corresponding SSL - no difference.
Pop3 and Imap logging shows no errors
There's Trend Micro Messaging Security installed, but has been disabled for testing - no difference. (Issue has been there before installation of TM)
So, any ideas how to fix this? I'd appreciate...
    Thanks in advance,
    Robert

  • Difference Between All Mail and Inbox

When I do a search for an email in Apple Mail it'll typically show 2 results for each search. 1 in 'All Mail' and 1 in 'Inbox'.
Is there a difference between the 2? Is it essentially taking up TWICE the hard drive space?

The 'all mailboxes' indicates you're SEARCHING all mailboxes, not necessarily that there are multiple copies of a message. If you only have one inbox, then 'all mailboxes' is the same as 'inbox.'
If you have multiple mailboxes, here's where the distinction becomes helpful:
In my case, I have 4 email accounts, plus extra 'on my Mac' mailboxes that I've created on my sidebar. If I know that the message I seek is on my .mac account, I can choose to search only the 'Inbox' and speed up the search considerably.
If, on the other hand, I don't remember when or where the message came in, I can have it search 'All Mailboxes' and the system will look through all mailboxes from all accounts.
In your case, even if you only have one inbox, searching 'All Mailboxes' can still help, because it also searches the trash folder and junk folder (each appear as just another mailbox to the system).
    Hope this helps!

  • I had an imap account in my iPad and my iPhone 4. They worked just fine till about Christmas. They act like they are checking the mail and it shows there is mail to come in, but it just goes back to saying checking mail.  Can't send mail either.

I had an imap account in my iPad and my iPhone 4. They worked just fine till about Christmas. They act like they are checking the mail and it shows there is mail to come in, but it just goes back to saying checking mail.  Can't send mail either.

    Update to above question:
    Hello All,
To anyone with the same problem described above, on THEIR iPad (if it is running iOS 7.0.2):
Go to Settings; Mail, Contacts, Calendars; DELETE your *******@btinternet.com e-mail account, that you originally set up either using 'Other', or the 'BT' option which I am sure was in the list previous to the iOS 7 update.
Then ADD a NEW account choosing YAHOO from the list of options. DO NOT USE 'OTHER'.
Enter the correct details just as you (almost certainly) had already done in your previous attempts using 'other'.
When you see the 'verifying......' and 'the blue ticks' you should be able to exit settings and open your mail app and then receive all your 'old' e-mails again, AND be able to SEND as well.
All my 'old' e-mails, were NOT found in the 'old e-mail' folder though. THEY are still in my inbox.
So this fix worked for me.
After I deleted my account from 'OTHER' and put it in Yahoo, I like other people also ended up with more folders.
I hope this works for you on YOUR Apple devices.
    Bob

  • Can anyone help? No incoming emails are appearing in my Inbox, but appear in the Gmail All Mail box. This is occurring on both my iphone and ipad.even if I delete an email, it reappears here. Slowly driving me mad! All help appreciated

Can anyone help? No incoming emails are appearing in my Inbox, but they turn up in the Gmail All Mail box.
Even if I delete an email it pops up again here. This is happening on both my ipad and iphone4s and is gradually driving me mad.
Any help would be much appreciated.

All I had to do was complain.  I synced my iPhone to the Windows machine, checked the other account at iTunes prompting (where no apps had shown up previously), reconnected the iPad, and 140 apps downloaded including the App Store.  I have no idea why.

  • Not enough free space when there is - iTunes says I have over 9GB free but when I sync it says I can't as i don't have enough storage and need another 1.3GB!  it's driving me mad!!  help!!

iTunes says I have over 9GB free but when I sync it says I can't as i don't have enough storage and need another 1.3GB!  it's driving me mad!!  help!!

Check carefully. Perhaps you are trying to copy 9 GB plus 1.3 GB for a total of 10.3 GB. That would give you the message you see.

  • Using Mail with both pop and imap accounts

I have a Q to better understand how the Mail app. works in Lion so there is better coordination among my devices and mail = I'd like to lay out how it is now set up and see whether or not I'm right about how to handle them - and how to do things better.
    1.  I have a .mac account and no problems with it = if I read and delete on iPhone it deletes off iPad and computer fine.
    2.  I have an email account that is an IMAP account but at another host [I use Mail to get email from it] - so what I think happens is that it's sort of the same thing but operating on that other host as an IMAP so that the same thing happens more or less - email comes in on all 3 devices and when I delete from one it deletes from others = but maybe not as fast because it's going thru the Mail intermediary.  My need/wish is to use one email program [Mail] to get all my mail and that's why this and others all go thru Mail.
    3.  I have a 3rd account that is a POP account and can't be made IMAP because of the nature of the plan/host - in that I've noticed that I'll have 100 messages on my main computer and delete 75 of them but the 100 are still left on the iPhone and iPad = so far I don't do much about it but I hope/assume I'm right to think that if I know I've read and dealt with the 100 messages that if I want to I can just delete them all quickly off the iPhone or iPad...I'm not sure how to handle a Pop account to minimize all the hassle.
Does this seem like the right way to go or is there a better way to manage these 3 diff. accounts ???  I noticed some of the problem when I checked Mail on my iPad and saw there were loads of old emails 'unread' on it that I had dealt with on my computer so I knew things were out of whack.
Last thought = I do go to Synchronize all Accounts from time to time but really don't notice it makes a difference but maybe I don't understand tht either.
    thanks much

Okay, it just fixed itself without me doing anything, or even quitting the program again. It still seems like a bug.
