Mail consumes a lot of resources making the os unusable

I'm having a weird problem with Apple Mail: After launching, the program rapidly starts taking a lot of the system resources making it impossible to run any other program.
CPU utilization is very high, the Mail process takes around 2.5 Gb of RAM (real memory) and over 20 Gb of virtual memory.
The only thing Mail appears to be doing is updating it's cache.
What could be wrong? Besides using another mail client, what are my options?
Thanks.

Hi eroussel,
I'd suggest to try the following for starters:
When launching Mail.app, try opening the mail activity monitor by going to Window --> Activity, or command-0. It should show you some detailed information on if anything is happening in the background in regards to talking to your mail server, smtp server, etc.
As Linc Davis said, try booting in Safe Mode and see if the same thing happens.
If the same thing happens in Safe Mode, try deleting the mail account (assuming you only have one) and re-create it again using the settings from your mail provider. Be sure to backup your computer first!!
While doing all of this, leave the Activity monitor up from both Mail.app and the Mac OS X system Activity Monitor.
Hope this helps point you in the right direction.

Whenever I open the App Store there is a white box covering the center of the screen making the store screen unusable.  How do I fix it?

    Try This...
Close All Open Apps... Sign Out of your Account... Perform a Reset... Try again...
Reset  ( No Data will be Lost )
Press and Hold the Sleep/Wake Button and the Home Button at the Same Time...
Wait for the Apple logo to Appear...
Usually takes about 15 - 20 Seconds... ( But can take Longer...)
    Release the Buttons...

  • The Mail application on my iMac is making the entire computer act up.

I tried printing off my itinerary for my flight I'm taking tomorrow. The email was sent from WestJet directly to my email within the Mail application. When I tried to print the email itself, my computer started acting weird and froze, so I shut off the computer, and rebooted it (so I thought). When I turned it back on, none of the processes had stopped, and it just started back up to where it was before. My computer was no longer being recognized as my own for some reason. I originally got the computer used from a family member, and it was recognizing the computer as his, as if it had just rebooted from a previous date when he had owned the computer itself. It showed his name in all of the applications, and when I tried opening Microsoft Word to print it from there, it acted as if I had never run the application before (The previous owner never had the application installed). The default printer was not mine, although the drivers for my printer were still downloaded, and the printer was being recognized. The printer was the previous owner's. I just tried printing another document with just plain text, and it printed fine. No errors, (after I made the default printer back to mine) and nothing went wrong whatsoever. No lag time between when I clicked on print, and the actual printing of the document.
Just wanting to see if anyone has encountered this problem before I have. IT just seems weird that it would "act" as if it had booted from a previous date.
    Thanks,
    Brad.

    Hey Leonard1207,
You may want to try removing your mail account from the Mail application, then re-adding it:

  • Photoshop CS4 consumes a lot of resources

I'm running Photoshop CS4 on my HP qouad core 2.4Ghz, 4GB of RAM, and 10K RPM 150GB hard drive. For some reason Photoshop is really slow e.g. zoom in and out. Just by having Photoshop open, the CPU usage is above 30% all the time. Is this normal?

Thanks for the suggestion. For now, updating the graphic card seems to do the trick. Photoshop runs much quicker and the CPU usage is less than 10%.

When trying to update my Mail Account Mailbox Behaviours settings, after making the changes when I try to close the settings pane the following messages occur: Invalid Incoming Mail Server The “Incoming Mail Server” field cannot be empty. The incoming mail server box has in light grey colour: p02-imap.mail.me.com in it and I cannot edit its content. Any ideas what is going on and how to fix it?

    Hi all,
Mattreichenbach is probably on the right track here with a reset of settings.  I think I've determined the issue has to do with cached account information and inconsistencies for the account name.  This seems to crop up when I've changed my password and it hasn't propagated fully to all the servers, devices, certificates, etc.
Hopefully many here are on their way to restoration of service by now but it's clear that a lot of people are having the same issues.  Very frustrating and definitely something Apple needs to resolve:  incoming mail server field grayed out, incorrect autopopulation of different fields, other unanticipated behaviors.  If you're still having issues, though, here's what worked for me...
First, head to the iCloud preferences pane in System Configuration and choose "Sign Out".  When I did this it prompted me with a number of "are you sure" type questions about retaining information on my local machine.  I chose to delete/remove the info each time simply because it should all be restored by the cloud and I didn't want to risk a massive duplication of my data... I will say, I'm back up and running with no issues so I suspect you can make the same delete/remove choices...  But use your own judgment.  I don't want you to lose any data (ie.. please use care as you do this because I cannot bear the thought of causing anyone to experience the pain of data loss).
Once you've signed out of iCloud, restart your system.  When you get back in, head to the Mail, Contacts and Calendars section of your System Preferences and add your account back by choosing the brushed aluminum "iCloud" button.  When it asks for your account name, use your @iCloud.com email address.  I am all but certain my issue had started because one of my devices (iPhone or whatever) had been set up with an email alias specified instead of my @iCloud.com address.
Apple, if you're reading through any of these issues (there are TONS of users having this same problem).  Take note, that your icloud service somewhat frequently is not responding and yet tells the user that the password is wrong and this prompts people to be changing their passwords unnecessarily.  This has happened to me on numerous occasions.  Also, I noticed that last week's outage corresponded to a VERY similar outage exactly one year ago to the day.  Sounds like planned maintenance to me and I think you could do a better job notifying folks so we're not wasting HUGE amounts of time troubleshooting a problem that we have no hope of fixing.
Hope that helps some of you!

Do you mean a document that tells you how SMTP should work? I think you'll want to take a look at http://www.rfc.net, where you can find RFC documents that specify all sorts of things. Search for strings like "SMTP" and "POP3" to find stuff on email system architectures.

  • Apple Mail consuming lots of CPU

Since I've upgraded my MacBook Pro from Snow Leopard (10.6.8) to Mountain Lion Apple Mail has been behaving strangely – Activity Monitor shows Mail consuming about 100% CPU for hours at a time. Mail is often very sluggish at displaying messages. I've rebuilt my mailboxes (Mailbox > Rebuild) but that doesn't seem to help.
Is anybody else experiencing this? Any ideas about how to troubleshoot/fix it?

Please follow these instructions to delete the Mail "sandbox" folder.
    Back up all data.
Triple-click the line below to select it, then copy it to the Clipboard (command-C):
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
    Quit Mail.
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar. Paste (command-V) into the box that opens, then press return. A Finder window should open with a folder named "com.apple.mail" selected. If it does, move the selected folder — not just its contents — to the Desktop. Leave the Finder window open for now.
Relaunch Mail and test. If the problem is resolved, you'll have to recreate some of your Mail settings. You can then delete the folder you moved and close the Finder window. If you still have the problem, quit Mail again and put the folder back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. Post your results.
Caution: If you change any of the contents of the sandbox, but leave the folder itself in place, Mail may crash or not launch at all. Deleting the whole sandbox will cause it to be rebuilt automatically.

Can I install PSE 10-13 Win7-8 without the Organizer (uses a lot of resources)?

You can't install them separately, but it is easy to place unique shortcuts on the desktop for organizer and for editor.
In Organizer, go to Edit>Preferences>Auto Analyzer options and uncheck analyzer and people recognition if you don't use them - may improve resource utilization.

My sound has disappeared - what position should the toggle switch be in?  Also, my e-mail sticks a lot of the time, same old problem, no solutions.

Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
Check your settings. The iPads have a small switch on the right edge. It can be used as a rotation lock to keep the screen from automatically reorienting itself as you move around, but you need to have the tablet’s settings configured properly. That same switch, right above the volume buttons, can also be set to function instead as a mute button to silence certain types of audio.
If the switch is set to work as a mute button, you can change its purpose to “screen-rotation lock” by tapping the Settings icon on the home screen. On the Settings screen, tap General on the left side, and on the right side of the screen flick down to “Use Side Switch to.” Tap to select Lock Rotation or Mute to set the button’s function. Even if you set the side switch for your preferred use, you can still mute the Mini or lock the screen. Just double-click the Home button, and when the panel of apps appears along the bottom edge of the screen, flick the row from left to right with your finger. Tap the icon on the far left side of the row to either lock the iPad’s screen or mute the iPad’s alerts, notifications and sound effects. Music, podcasts and video are not muted unless you turn the volume all the way down.

  • ATI e-mail told me to come here about the G4 card

I helped a friend to get a computer and one of the things he got was a nice new shiny MSI G4 MX440 card with 64megs of DDR RAM and TV out!.
It has been about 1 year and 3 months now and one day his computer started sounding funny. He called me up and I had a look and it turns out that his FAN was CRACKED and APPEARED to have LEAKED out some GREASE or OIL onto the heatsink. The FAN was cracked and off balance through and it bugged him when he tried to play CS with it.
WELL. I sent e-mail to MSI (the support address) and THIS is what I got back:
    To our Valued Customer,
Thank you for purchasing & supporting MSI product.
This E-mail is an automatic reply which is to notify you that you have
    reached [email protected]
In order to give you an overall technical support, we have listed some
common problems and solutions for your reference.
Please take time to read the useful FAQ which we have compiled from the
technical support e-mails we have received as link and see if it helps

    I. Read the Manual
Most users have tendency not to read the manual under the presumption
that they already know what is written in there. However, we have seen
that there are percentage of technical support calls & e-mails as a
result of not reading the manual
II. Keep your MSI CD drivers
MSI CD drivers provide easy driver installation via auto-run. Losing it
would require you to install driver manually
    III. Contact your Reseller
Your reseller or the store/company that sold the motherboard or system
to you should know well what your system contains & have the necessary
resources to help you in your problem. Since they can see your system
clearly, it is easier for them to identify if your problem was caused of
wrong installation or wrong assembly or defective product, etc. It would
be advisable to contact your reseller for those having problems like
system cannot power on or need to send board for repair
NOTE: there is a tiny percentage that the board might be defective & by
contacting your reseller at an earlier time prevent your warranty being
voided. Some resellers provide certain period of time for
return/exchange, after that you have to either send the board to them
for repair or you are on your own.
    IV. Check our website
Some of the information you are looking for might be already posted in

This was a simple problem to fix. Why the hell was I told to come here? You mean I can just DOWNLOAD a new fan?
This is what I need: A NEW FAN DAMMIT!
Not stories from other folks that had the same problem. Geeze, you would think that was the DEMOCRATIC way solve this problem, let's all just talk about and maybe it will fix itself...
Sorry, it has been a long day and this email was the straw that broke my camel's back.
Does ANYONE know of a REAL email address where I can actually ask a REAL person for a replacement fan?
AND, SINCE I am here,. WHY was this a SEALED fan with OIL or GREASE in it in the first place? is UP with that?

    Hi Stilly,
Did you notice this in the e-mail MSI sent you:
------------------------------------------------------------------------- We hope the directions below answer your question. If your problem still cannot be solved after going through all the suggestions, then you can reply this e-mail containing the automatic reply with your original e-mail. We will get back to you as soon as possible.
I don't know much about this, but you may be able to buy a comparable fan fron your local computer store - take the card in and ask the guy about it (I understand computer/graphics card fans are not very expensive).
It might be worth a try.
Of course, the card may not accept any other kind of fan - it all depends on how it attaches to the card.
If you do return the card to MSI there may be be postal charges etc. so the computer store MAY be your best, quickest, and cheapest option.
Anyway, it's up to you now - good luck and let us now how you get on.
