Mail seems to be inadequate?

Hello folks and happy new year.
I'm a long-time Eudora user. Suddenly I discover something I need that Eudora can't do so I wondered if it's time to switch to Mail. But, on even a superficial examination, Mail appears to be way short of a professional standard. Just one example — Apple calls Mail's "search" feature powerful but, to me, it seems pathetically-weak.
As far as the Mac is concerned, Eudora is almost dead. Sooner or later, an OS update will break it so that's another reason I've been thinking of this issue off and on.
But I worry that there really is nothing out there ready to take over from Eudora, which has served me wonderfully for years, with my multiple email accounts and huge numbers of filters and mailboxes.
MailForge and MailSmith receive poor reviews and, anyway, freeware or shareware isn't what I'm looking for. I'm happy to pay for a stable, professional, fully-featured application. But...is there such a thing in the email-for-Mac universe? Funny how Mac users are well-served in many fields but email is one area where offerings are poor or, in some other areas I'm concerned about, non-existant altogether. (A professional-grade usenet client is another thing I've never been able to find. Thoth ***** but it's the best there is.)
(And, for those interested, what can't Eudora do that I wanted to do? Send in cyrillic. It can receive cyrillic ok but their web site admits that it can't send. Strange.)
Can anyone point me please?

Sorry, that was just one example - I managed to find those emails via alternate methods. Too often I'd like to do a more sophisticated search than mail seems to support. For example, when you don't know how something is spelled but you know part of the word or you are searching for, or looking for a phrase but not sure of the tense or plurals.
The question remains how to do an advanced search or even simple loose pattern matching.
Mail continues to fall very short of Eudora (except that it doesn't crash and does display html emails). How about just being able to see more than one mailbox at a time? Or multiple search results at one time. How about the ability to label emails? I really miss Eudora's simple option-click to quickly gather emails based on any mailbox field. I really miss Eudora's ability to reply to more than one email in a single response. And, I sorely miss Eudora's ability to re-title and even edit existing emails.
...and it appears I'm not alone.

I was able to get to a support person who helped me fix this without charge. I guess it was my bad for not trying the right way to access support.
    Anyway, they answer is this.
I had to create a new account on my computer. When I logged into the new account it immediately wanted an AppleID. I used my daughter's e-mail address for the AppleID. This setup the internet accounts correctly with her iCloud.com e-mail address. I was then able to access e-mail in both the browser and Mail. Not that complicated but nothing that I would have easily thought up on my own.
    Thank Apple Support!

  • I've had my husband's e-mail set up on my phone, but now even though i have deleted it, any messages i send from my own e-mail seem to send from his.  How can i stop this?

i used to have my husband's e-mail account set up on my phone.  I've since deleted it but it seems to send all messages from his account.  very confusing and means i miss out on replies etc.
    Any advice?

This seems to be happening to a lot of users, so I suppose the servers are down.

  • Mail seems to add certain contacts to Address Book automatically

I'm not sure how it happens as I can't seem to find the option in Mail to turn it off, but it seems as though Mail wants to automatically add contacts into my Address Book.
At least I think it's Mail. I don't think iPhone would do that, would it?
Any idea how I can turn that off?

If you sync multiple devices via iCloud and at the same time sync the contacts via email boxes or even several then your contacts / address book will end up in chaos. When you add contacts on a mobile device one expect to be asked to which mailbox you would like to add the contact but this is not happening i.e. the new contact is synced with all mailboxes that have the sync contacts on.
As an example is you add a contact from your iPhone this contact is propagated via iCloud to the sync'd devices e.g. iMac and iPad and also to all the email accounts if the option sync contacts is on.
On the other hand if you add an email account with contacts and switch the sync contacts option on you might see multiple entries of the same contact. These will disappear / 'be deleted' if you switch the sync contacts off for the  the email account.
The best choice is keep the iCloud sync on for all devices and switch the sync of contacts of all your mail accounts off and import , cleanup duplicates off all the various contacts lists.

  • Apple Mail seems to stall when sending messages

I've had a problem for a few days now with my Apple mail. When I compose and send a message, it seems to stall and stays in my Outbox for ages. The spiral wheel spins continuously but the message doesn't get sent. In a few cases, the mail has taken 24 hours to send. I called my ISP and they said all my connections were fine - and that it was a problem with Apple mail.

    +VERY FRUSTRATING!!! FIX THIS APPLE!+
Unfortunately, these are user to user forums and no one from Apple will be replying to you. Also, please do not use all caps - it is considered shouting. And, since very few users are reporting this problem, it would appear to have something to do with your setups rather than a problem Apple needs to fix.
For both of you: There is obviously some problem with your software or hardware; you might want to try either to delete your mail account and recreate it (in Mail -> Preferences) and/or quite Mail and go to Users -> Library -> Preferences and delete this file: com.apple.Mail.plist. Please note: doing so will necessitate recreation/set up of Mail, so it would be advisable to take screen shots of all of your settings in your account(s) so you can easily copy them if necessary.

  • E-mail seeming to be sent but then vanishing

Today I sent several e-mails from my Gmail account on my iPhone. They seemed to get sent, but I just discovered that one of them wasn't in my sent mail file - so I checked on the only other one I remembered, and it wasn't there either. I looked in sent mail and also drafts from both my computer and from my iPhone, and I checked the outbox on the iPhone, and the e-mails have vanished completely.
Has anyone else had this experience? Do you have any idea what would have caused it or how I could prevent it? I have no idea how many e-mails were lost or to whom, so I can't even recreate them or figure out who doesn't have information I thought they had (especially if I replied to a message and then archived it)
    Thanks
    Steph

To diagnose problems with Thunderbird, try the following:
*Restart Thunderbird with add-ons disabled (Thunderbird Safe Mode). On the Help menu, click on "Restart with Add-ons Disabled". If Thunderbird works like normal, there is an Add-on or Theme interfering with normal operations. You will need to re-enable add-ons one at a time until you locate the offender.
*Restart the operating system in '''[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Safe_mode safe mode with Networking]'''. This loads only the very basics needed to start your computer while enabling an Internet connection. Click on your operating system for instructions on how to start in safe mode: [http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/windows-startup-settings-including-safe-mode Windows 8], [http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/start-computer-safe-mode#start-computer-safe-mode=windows-7 Windows 7], [http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/start-computer-safe-mode#start-computer-safe-mode=windows-vista Windows Vista], [http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/boot_failsafe.mspx?mfr=true" Windows XP], [http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1564 OSX]
; If safe mode for the operating system fixes the issue, there's other software in your computer that's causing problems. Possibilities include but not limited to: AV scanning, virus/malware, background downloads such as program updates.

  • Mails seem to have disappeared?!

Can anyone help me out with this please?
All of my mails that are over 6 days old display this message when I try to read them:
The message from xxxxxxxx concerning “RE: xxxxxxxx” has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download it.
The weird thing is that I have actually read all of these mails on THIS computer before and now they seem to have disappeared?!
I just upgraded to OSX 10.4.7 and since then I have noticed a few problems i didn't have before then... not sure if this is one of them though....

What's the capacity and space available on the startup disk?
Verify/repair your disk first (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all filesystem issues, if any, and checking that here's enough space available on the startup disk (a few GB, plus the space needed to make a backup copy of the Mail folder), try this:
    1. Quit Mail if it's running.
    2. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/. Make a backup copy of this folder, just in case something goes wrong -- e.g. by dragging it to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down.
    3. Locate the Envelope Index file and move it to the Trash. If you see an Envelope Index-journal file there, delete it as well.
    4. Open Mail and proceed to re-create the index -- Mail says it's "importing", but it just re-creates Envelope Index if the mailboxes are already in Mail 2.x format.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user's home folder.

  • TS3276 Mail seems to be frozen.  What can I do?

My Mail was working fine and then one day when I turned on my Air, Mail was not working and I can't get it back.  I can see my old emails but it won't get any new ones, or let me send anything.  It seems to be frozen.  When I look at connection doctor, it seems to be stalled with copying files but when I press the red stop symbol, nothing happens.  There's no way to reboot that I can see.  What should I do?

I think I would reset the SMC and then delete the software that seems to have been associated with the problem.

  • Yahoo Mail seems to drain my battery

Ok, here's my story. I'm on my second phone. I returned by first after three days because my battery seemed to drain ultra-fast. After 5 hours of standby it was dead. This was with wifi and b-tooth disabled.
The old phone had been set up to download mail from a yahoo mail account.
So I got the new phone. I didn't have time to configure it much, so I didn't set up yahoo mail. I have used it for nearly a week, intensively and the battery never falters. I don't think I've seen it below 1/2 charge.
Then last night I finally got around to firing up yahoo mail and whammo, my battery is draining fast. I'm at 1/4 charge only 7 hours after pulling it off an over-night charge.
An hour ago I shut down my yahoo mail account on the phone and it seems to be fine again.
    Anyone else having this experience?
    G5 dual 2GigHz - Mac Book Pro Core 2 Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

I agree that this behavior is very strange and I doubt it's a simple issue of accessing the yahoo servers. I should note also, that in both cases I had the email set to only check for mail when I told it to manually. I don't even have push mail enabled.
On the first phone, I had only the edge network available, and wifi and bluetooth shut down. I had a decent edge signal, around 120 kbs.
On the second phone, I'm running a mix of edge and wifi, but bluetooth is still off.
I just find it strange that there is a STARK difference between battery consumption, and the only variable is the yahoo mail account on two different phones. I'm very curious if anyone else is having this issue.
I wonder if there is some other flaw in the yahoo software causing battery drain.
For now I'm just leaving the yahoo account disabled.
I'm using Gmail, with the same settings as yahoo and roughly the same mail traffic, and having no battery issues.

  • Search function in Mail seems off

I just bought a new MacBook Pro, and I've transfered my Mail mailboxes from my old 10.3.9 computer to 10.5.2 on the new computer. Everything seems fine, with one exception. When I search in Mail, using the criteria "Entire Message", mail always returns zero (0) results! It finds things alright (I think) if I search using the criteria "From", "To", or "Subject". This is very annoying, since I cannot search the main body of the text of any e-mail!!! Any ideas on this? Thanks.

Something you said earlier was helpful. The problem was the computer not having an index of the body text of the e-mail that I brought over from the old machine. My solution was this: I created a new mailbox, and named it ZZZ. Then I copied the content of each folder into ZZZ (leaving that folder now empty), then I copied all the e-mail back into the original folder. I repeated this process for every mailbox, and now I have what I think are full indexes of each mailbox. I'm still checking on that, though.

  • My inbox mail seems to be stuck searching for mail. (optimum)

In late January my inbox email stopped working and seems to be stuck trying to recieve.{little spinny wheel}. I can still send emails
Made appointment @ apple store and was told by tech to lose optimum. explained that my husbands account on same computer could recieve but not send. He said its the cable companys poor service i explained that it had worked just fine @ wks prior,
I called apple and happliy paid in full for a service tech waited my turn for assistance. they had me check everything up and running. their solution is to remove account and reinstall each time i want to check my mail,
i have a hard time believing its my email server as my email works just fine on my iphone.
please helpme get up and running again

Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive & clear caches.)
Not exactly clear, but in Address Books tool bar, is Groups & Names shown, or just Names?

  • Mail seems to go out, gets copied into Sent folder, but isn't really sent

Thunderbird would seem to send my mail, moving it into the Sent folder and showing no error message, but the mail didn't really get sent. I saw some advice that said to try deleting my password (even though the password was correct). I tried that and the mail worked a few days but then the problem re-appeared. Just now I received a software update (31.1.1) so I decided to try again. I deleted my password from the list under Tool>Options, I sent a test mail (providing my password manually), and it worked but the next mail I tried didn't work. Just disappeared again without arriving anywhere. (I wasn't asked for my password again-- I suppose because I hadn't logged out since providing it.) What's causing my problem?

regardless, I suggest you try [https://wiki.mozilla.org/MailNews:Logging logging ]the connection. But I think that Thunderbird is sending the mail to the server. If the server is blacklisted is another question entirely. And given that ISPs particularly '''DO NOT''' use the same SMTP server to send mail from their web mail platform as the assign for mail client use being able to send from the web mail is a non starter in diagnosing the problem.,
Perhaps the log will provide enough information to bulldoze through the poor level one support at your provider to level two where there might be someone that actually knows what an SMTP server is.
