On my Arch file server, I have a bash script that downloads podcasts & then e-mails me when complete. I use mailx to send a message to my postfix-based Arch mail server, hosted offsite. The connection does use TLS 1.2, as part of the output references. This setup has worked for several years, but recently I sporadically get this crash. Any ideas what it might be?Hello,
i am the maintainer of S-nail / mail(x).
Have you updated to v14.8.2?
There was a bug lingering in the codebase since 2001, and a recent change (in v14.8.1) caused that codepath to actually execute even for short-time use cases like sending mail from the command line etc.
Would you be so kind and confirm that your use case works again?
Thank you!! -

SMTP-auth via mailx results in service unavailable
Why do my attempts to use mailx with Gandi SMTP fail with 'Service unavailable'?
I have the following ~/.mailrc file which is recognised by mailx:
set smtp=smtps://mail.gandi.net:465
set smtp-auth=login
set smtp-auth-user=harry@XXXXXXX
set smtp-auth-password=XXXXXXX
set from=harry@XXXXXXX
set ssl-verify=ignore
set nss-config-dir=/Users/neville/Thunderbird

--78E73A382D4.1356018107/G4-N-2.local--http://www.spamhaus.org says:
Mail servers only run spam filters such as Spamhaus PBL on port 25, so if you find you are being blocked by the PBL when you try to send mail to your mail server that means you are not communicating with the mail server on the 'authenticated' port 587 but you're still on port 25. This means your 'SMTP Authentication' is not working correctly.
http://wiki.gandi.net/en/mail/standard-settings#smtp-account says:
SMTP Account
Name server : mail.gandi.net
Port : 25, 465 (with SSL) or 587 (try one or the other)
TLS or SSL: yes
SMTP Authentication : yes, using the same settings as for the POP / IMAP account
I was trying to use the same settings I have used for several years with Thunderbird and Apple Mail, ie SSL on port 465.
Is there something wrong with my settings which could be preventing mailx from using port 465?
A few debug tips would be appreciated.
Your link causes me to ask: Does the mailx on Leopard support SMTP directly? -
Mailx command unable to send mail to internal email server
Hi,
I am trying to send mail from my shell program registered as concurrent request in R12 its working fine for external server like (gmail, yahoo, hotmail etc) but when Im trying to send mail to internal mail within organization it fails. It does'nt error out though. Our dba has been working on the same but no luck. Any inputs will be of great help.
echo "Mail"|mailx -s "Test Mail from DEV" "[email protected]" ( fails within internal domain)
echo "Mail"|mailx -s "Test Mail from DEV" "[email protected]" ( successfully sends mail within external domain)
I tried disabling the dns resolution for public sites in the configuration file (/etc/resolve.conf) but no luck. Thanks in advance.
Thanks,
AhmedThanks Koushik for your prompt reply. You mean the configuration file /etc/resolve.conf right? Here you go. If I comment all the below lines the mail does not work even for external sites as well.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------resolve.conf-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
search companymaildomain.com
nameserver aa.aa.aaa.a
nameserver bbb.bb.bb.b
Here first line has the company domain
second and third line is the ip address of primary and secondary dns server
Thanks,

Using Mailx to read emails - Simplify the view
Hi,
I've just started using the mailx program, from heirloom-mailx in the core repo, to send and read my emails. This is great, no more extra cruft that I have to wait load and I can pipe any results of commands straight to my inbox. My queery is regarding the format of messages. Is there anyway I can not display the headers of emails when I read them?
I dont mean the "headers" that are displayed when the program is run to show the new messages, I mean the info when you open a message, like "From", "Delivered-To", "Return-Path" etc. Some of these are useful, but some are so long that my message starts right down the bottom of the screen. The best solution would be to customise this to display only "From", "To" "Date" and then the message, but as I've just seen all that on the original screen, I could manage without.
Thanks for your help.

I just want to read emails, can I display just some of the email header, or none, and then the message in the mailx program?Doesn't SAS have a direct connection library that does not use ODBC? maybe their pass-though access:

[SOLVED] mailx error and inconsistency
I'm finalizing a set of utilities that is supposed to send me a text message, via mailx. However, when I set the recipient's email (my email-to-text address: [email protected]) and send the message, I never recieve the email. In addition, I even tried sending texts in a similar manner to, for instance, friends with other phones ([email protected]), but to no avail.
I find this strange because my friend can send me one from his school's server, via mailx ([email protected]). I also find this strange because I can successfully send messages to my personal email account.
I'm sure that I'm missing something, but I have no idea what.

Did a little more digging, starting with this, from the above log:
warning: database /etc/postfix/sasl_passwd.db is older than source file /etc/postfix/sasl_passwd
Ran across this forum discussion about postfix. Then I remembered that I changed the both main.cf and sasl_password from smtp.gmail.com to smtp.googlemail.com, which mirrors my Thunderbird credentials. But, I never issued the postmap command to update the db file. So, I simply ran:
sudo postmap /etc/postfix/sasl_passwd
sudo postfix reload
and now it's working great.

I can't seem to find any information on setting additional headers (specifically Content-Type) when sending a message via mailx
I can send text/plain messages, but I need to send text/html content.
cat test.html | mailx -s "Testing" [email protected]
I've tried including headers at the top of my file, but mailx just ignores them.
cat test.html | mailx -t

Subject: Testing
Content-Type: text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1
<html></html>
Any advise or links to how this can be achieved would be great. ThanksI found this question on stackexchange and decided mailx does not meet my needs very well, so I installed msmtp. It's very easy to setup and use. I added the necessary headers to the top of my file, then executed:
cat test.html | mstp [email protected] -
Mailx unable to send mails to outside world?
hi
on a solaris sparc 9 environment mailx command is unable to send mails to the outside world. What could be the reason & needs to be checked?
thankssounds basic, but what's your entry of malhost in /etc/hosts pointing to? If it's not there, add the entry with the IP address of your SMTP host.
when sending test mail from mailx, have another window open thats tail-ing the contents of /var/log/syslog - that usually contains good info about sendmail.
another thing worth checking is the rules on your SMTP gateway. If this is a new host, it may need adding to the list of authorised relay list. Also check to see if the SMTP host is alowed to relay mail outside of its own domain too. -
Hi,
I have checked the following.
1. check service are up or not
ps -elf|grep mail - It is UP.
2. edit /etc/mail/sendmail.cf
# "Smart" relay host (may be null)
DSmyservername
3. added below to /etc/mail/ trusted-users
root
daemon
uucp
Please check the output. It is showing message is send, but I am not receiving any mail.
mailx -v -s "Test Mail" [email protected] </dev/null
