Make column names legal

In some other database engines, I encluse column or table names in [] to insure they are accepted even if they have embedded spaces or match some key word.
Is there something similar in Oracle?
Thanks,
Jon Jacobs

Yes, you can use double quotes to preserve white spaces and formatting. But if you did that and i was working for / with you ... i'd be sad (personal opinion anyway).

• How to make the display of custom column names in UWL(not bother abt values

Hi all
i want to make the display of custom column names in UWL ( for example GP)
i dont want or not looking about values for those custom columns . i know that thru custom connector we can achieve to retrieve the values for those custom columns. but currently i am looking only just to display the custom column names( for example GP custom column names, just i want to display the name of the columns ) in UWL .
Thanks

Hello Prashant,
You can add the control to your custom pagelayout, the following article has an example:
http://spandps.com/2012/02/22/showing-the-audience-target-field-in-an-editmodepanel-sharepoint-sp2010-in-projectserver-ps2010/
Btw, the SPFieldTargetToControl has a required property:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/microsoft.office.server.webcontrols.fieldtypes.spfieldtargettocontrol.required(v=office.14).aspx

• How to make the name of a column apear as many times as the column on page

Hi,
This is what i want to do:
I have a basic report looking like this:
<Column name>
value 1
value 2
value 3
value n
Since the column is small it can fit in a page more then one time. I know how to make it print more then once: i switch the repeating frame to print down and across and i modify the frame that contains it so the horizontal elasticity is variable.
After these changes my report looks like this:
<Column name>
value 1-----------------------value n+1-----------------------value m+1
value 2-----------------------value n+2-----------------------value m+2
value 3-----------------------value n+3-----------------------...
value n-----------------------value m
What i want is my report to look like this:
<Column name>-------<Column name>------------<Column name>
value 1-----------------------value n+1-----------------------value m+1
value 2-----------------------value n+2-----------------------value m+2
value 3-----------------------value n+3-----------------------...
value n-----------------------value m
Would welcome any advice on how to achieve this please.
Thank you.

Hi,
I will suggest a solution which may appear not simple. I do not know. Il did use this method, because a Government pre-printed tax form can print six values (in colum way) each page and it was not just esthetique question.
1. Seams that you can know in advance the max number of column according to the width of the page and the length of the column.
2. You can assume that you have x column at max by ligne
3. Transforms your N rows in a table of M rows, each one with x columns : you will have N/x + N mod x
4. I did this transformation using PL/SQL piplined function to transform rows to columns (by x)
5. You base your report on the Pipelined function using select ... from Table (fnc_....) syntaxe
6. make your vertical elasticity to variable and horizontal to fixed
7. Put six labels on the top of your repeating frame (within a normal frame)
I agree, it's not the solution if the requirment is just esthetic.
Hope it helps.

• How to make dynamic query using DBMS_SQL variable column names

First of all i will show a working example of what i intend to do with "EXECUTE IMMEDIATE":
(EXECUTE IMMEDIATE has 32654 Bytes limit, which isn't enough for me so i'm exploring other methods such as DBMS_SQL)
-------------------------------------------------CODE-----------------------------------
create or replace PROCEDURE get_dinamic_query_content
(query_sql IN VARCHAR2, --any valid sql query ('SELECT name, age FROM table')
list_fields IN VARCHAR2) --list of the columns name belonging to the query (  arr_list(1):='name';   arr_list(2):='age';
-- FOR k IN 1..arr_list.count LOOP
-- list_fields := list_fields || '||content.'||arr_list(k)||'||'||'''~cs~'''; )

EXECUTE IMMEDIATE sql_stmt;
END;
-------------------------------------------------CODE-----------------------------------
I'm attepting to use DBMS_SQL to perform similar instructions.
Is it possible?

Hi Pedro
You need to use DBMS_SQL here because you don't know how many columns your query is going to have before runtime. There are functions in DBMS_SQL to get information about the columns in your query - all this does is get the name.
SQL> CREATE OR REPLACE PROCEDURE get_query_cols(query_in IN VARCHAR2) AS
2 cur PLS_INTEGER;
3 numcols NUMBER;
4 col_desc_table dbms_sql.desc_tab;
5 BEGIN
6 cur := dbms_sql.open_cursor;
7 dbms_sql.parse(cur
8 ,query_in
9 ,dbms_sql.native);
10 dbms_sql.describe_columns(cur
11 ,numcols
12 ,col_desc_table);
13 FOR ix IN col_desc_table.FIRST .. col_desc_table.LAST LOOP
14 dbms_output.put_line('Column ' || ix || ' is ' ||
15 col_desc_table(ix).col_name);
16 END LOOP;
17 dbms_sql.close_cursor(cur);
18 END;
19 /
Procedure created.
SQL> exec get_query_cols('SELECT * FROM DUAL');
Column 1 is DUMMY
PL/SQL procedure successfully completed.
SQL> exec get_query_cols('SELECT table_name, num_rows FROM user_tables');
Column 1 is TABLE_NAME
Column 2 is NUM_ROWS
PL/SQL procedure successfully completed.
SQL> exec get_query_cols('SELECT column_name, data_type, low_value, high_value FROM user_tab_cols');
Column 1 is COLUMN_NAME
Column 2 is DATA_TYPE
Column 3 is LOW_VALUE
Column 4 is HIGH_VALUE
PL/SQL procedure successfully completed.I've just written this as a procedure that prints out the column names using dbms_output - I guess you're going to do something different with the result - maybe returning a collection, which you'll then parse through in Apex and print the output on the screen - this is just to illustrate the use of dbms_sql.

• Renaming column name of view

suppose i have a table employee with column name first and last. Now i want to make a view of that table employee with column name First_name and Last_name. Is it possible?

If you would have taken the time to look up the create view command in the SQL manual or in the Application Developers Guide - Fundaments you would not be asking this question.
You can name the table columns any legal column name in the view definition.
create or replace view bob_vw
as select lname as LAST_NAME, fname as FIRST_NAME from source_table;

• How to make column headers in table in PDF report appear bold while datas in table appear regular from c# windows forms with sql server2008 using iTextSharp

Hi my name is vishal
For past 10 days i have been breaking my head on how to make column headers in table appear bold while datas in table appear regular from c# windows forms with sql server2008 using iTextSharp.
Given below is my code in c# on how i export datas from different tables in sql server to PDF report using iTextSharp:
using System;
using System.Collections.Generic;
using System.ComponentModel;
using System.Data;
using System.Drawing;
using System.Linq;
using System.Text;
using System.Threading.Tasks;
using System.Windows.Forms;
using System.Data.SqlClient;
using iTextSharp.text;
using iTextSharp.text.pdf;
using System.Diagnostics;
using System.IO;
namespace DRRS_CSharp
public partial class frmPDF : Form
public frmPDF()
InitializeComponent();
private void button1_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
Document doc = new Document(PageSize.A4.Rotate());
var writer = PdfWriter.GetInstance(doc, new FileStream("AssignedDialyzer.pdf", FileMode.Create));
doc.SetMargins(50, 50, 50, 50);
doc.SetPageSize(new iTextSharp.text.Rectangle(iTextSharp.text.PageSize.LETTER.Width, iTextSharp.text.PageSize.LETTER.Height));
doc.Open();
PdfPTable table = new PdfPTable(6);
table.TotalWidth =530f;
table.LockedWidth = true;
PdfPCell cell = new PdfPCell(new Phrase("Institute/Hospital:AIIMS,NEW DELHI", FontFactory.GetFont("Arial", 14, iTextSharp.text.Font.BOLD, BaseColor.BLACK)));
cell.Colspan = 6;
cell.HorizontalAlignment = 0;
table.AddCell(cell);
Paragraph para=new Paragraph("DCS Clinical Record-Assigned Dialyzer",FontFactory.GetFont("Arial",16,iTextSharp.text.Font.BOLD,BaseColor.BLACK));
para.Alignment = Element.ALIGN_CENTER;

table.AddCell("Verification");

while (dr.Read())

else if (MessageBox.Show("Do you want to save changes to AssignedDialyzer.pdf before closing?", "DRRS", MessageBoxButtons.YesNoCancel, MessageBoxIcon.Exclamation) == DialogResult.No)
this.Close();
The above code executes well with no problem at all!
As you can see the file to which i create and save and open my pdf report is
AssignedDialyzer.pdf.
The column headers of table in pdf report from c# windows forms using iTextSharp are
"Reprocessing Date","Patient Name","Dialyzer(Manufacturer,Size)","No.of Reuse","Verification" and
"DialyzerID".
However the problem i am facing is after execution and opening of document is my
column headers in table in pdf report from
c# and datas in it all appear in bold.
I have browsed through net regarding to solve this problem but with no success.
What i want is my pdf report from c# should be similar to following format which i was able to accomplish in vb6,adodb with MS access using iTextSharp.:
Given below is report which i have achieved from vb6,adodb with MS access using iTextSharp
I know that there has to be another way to solve my problem.I have browsed many articles in net regarding exporting sql datas to above format but with no success!
Is there is any another way to solve to my problem on exporting sql datas from c# windows forms using iTextSharp to above format given in the picture/image above?!
If so Then Can anyone tell me what modifications must i do in my c# code given above so that my pdf report from c# windows forms using iTextSharp will look similar to image/picture(pdf report) which i was able to accomplish from
vb6,adodb with ms access using iTextSharp?
I have approached Sound Forge.Net for help but with no success.
I hope anyone/someone truly understands what i am trying to ask!
I know i have to do lot of modifications in my c# code to achieve this level of perfection but i dont know how to do it.
Can anyone help me please! Any help/guidance in solving this problem would be greatly appreciated.
I hope i get a reply in terms of solving this problem.

• Oracle 10g - Defining the column name in Non English

Hi Experts,
I have an exisitng application which is developed on Windows using ASP Technology and uses Oracle 10g 10.1.0.2.0.
The application is supported with an instance of Data Base within which multiple tablespaces are created for different clients. The application is developed in such a way that some of the tables arecreated dynamically and the columns are named using the data entered through the UI.
This application needs to be globalized now. The problem is, the column name entered through the UI can be in any language based on the client's settings and those values in turn will be used for naming the columns in the tables.
1) Can I have the column names to be named using non english characters in Oracle 10g DB? If so,
1.1) what should I do to configure the exisiting Oracle instance to support it?
1.2) To what level is that configuration possible, is it per DB instance level (or) can it be done at Tablespace level. I would like to configure each tablespace to host tables with columns defined with different languages, say for example, tablespace 1 will have tables with Japaenese column names and tablespace 2 will have tables with German column names?
2) What should I do to make my entire DB to support unicode data i.e., to accept any language strings. Currently all strings are declared as VarChar2, should I change all VarChar2 to NVarChar2 (or) is there a way to retain the VarChar2 as is and make some database wide setting?
Please note that I do not have an option of retaining the column in English as per the Business Requirement.
Envionment:
OS - Windows 2003 32 bit
Oracle 10g 10.1.0.2.0
UI forms in ASP
TIA,
Prem

1. Yes, you can.
SQL> create table ÜÝÞ( ßàá number(10));
Table created.
SQL> insert into ÜÝÞ values (10);
1 row created.1.1 and 1.2 and 2. You can choose UTF as your default character set. It allows the user of non-English characters in VARCHAR columns in your whole database. It is not per tablespace.
SQL> create table ÜÝÞ( ßàá varchar2(100));
Table created.
SQL> insert into ÜÝÞ values ('âãäçìé');
1 row created.

• What is the order of Column Names in Sqlite query results?

I am writing an application using Adobe Air, Sqlite, and Javascript.
After writing the following select statement:
SELECT field1, field 2, field 3, field 4 FROM TableA;
I would like to get the columnName/data combination from each row -- which I do successfully with a loop:
var columnName="";
for (columnName in selResults.data[i]) {
output+=columnName + ":" + selResultsdata[i][columnName] + ";";
My issue is that the column names come out in a different order every time I run the query and never once have they come out in the desired order -- field 1, field 2, field 3, field 4. If I run the query in Firefox's Sqlite Manager, the columns come out in the "proper" order. When I run them in Adobe Air, the order will be the same if I run the query mulitple times without closing the app. If I make a change such as declaring the columnName variable with "" before the for column, or declare it as (var = columnName in selResults.data) , then the order changes. If I shut down my app and re-open after lunch and run query, it comes out in another order. At this time, I'm not interested in the order of the rows, just the order of the columns in each output row. I've even tried assiging an index to columnName which seems to just pick up a single letter of the columnName.
I'm in the process of changing my HTML presentation of the data to assign a precise columnName to an HTML table title, but I'm reluctant to let go of the above concept as I think my separation of HTML/presentation and Javascript would be better if I could use the solution described above.
So, does anybody know how to force the order of the columnNames in my output -- or what I'm doing to cause it to come out in a different order?
Jeane

Technically there isn't any "order" for the return columns. They aren't returned as an Array -- they're just properties on an Object instance (a "generic object"). The random order you're seeing is the behavior of the for..in loop iterating over the properties of the object. Unfortunately, with a for..in loop there is no guaranteed order for iterating over properties (and, as you've seen, it tends to vary wildly).
The only solution is to create your own list of the column names and sort it the way you want to, then use that to create your output. For example, use the for..in loop to loop over the properties, but rather than actually get the values, just dump the column names into an Array:
var columnName="";
var columns = [];
for (columnName in selResults.data[i]) {
columns.push(columnName);
columns = columns.sort(); // just uses the default alphabetical sort -- you would customize this if desired
var j = 0;
for (j = 0; j < columns.length; j++) {
columnName = columns[j];
output+=columnName + ":" + selResultsdata[i][columnName] + ";";

• Can I use bind variable instaed of writing static COLUMN Name

Hi , I am having a table containing id and column names, the data is stored against that id in other tables. Now I wish to update data into another table so that it goes into apppropriate column without using decode function.
I am trying to do this:
EXECUTE IMMEDIATE 'update TEST set :1 = :2
where PROJECT_ID= :3 and UNIQUE_ID= :4' using P_DEST_COLUMN, P_TEXT_VALUE, P_PROJ_ID, P_TASK_UID;
the values P_DEST_COLUMN, P_TEXT_VALUE, P_PROJ_ID, P_TASK_UID are populated using a cursor in PL/SQl
Is this statement valid? If not can you tell me how to do it as I am getting some error I am unable to comprehend.
thanks
Rishabh

Column names cannot be substituted at run-time as bind variables. If you need to specify the column name at run-time, you'd need to construct a new string and execute that string dynamically, i.e.
EXECUTE IMMEDIATE 'UPDATE test SET ' || p_dest_column || ' = :1 ' || ...From a data model standpoint, storing column names as data elements in another table is generally a rather poor idea. It's likely to make ad-hoc reporting nearly impossible and to cause a lot more parsing than would otherwise be required.

• Column name in link on sql report?

Hey guys -
Is there some way to put the column name of a report in a link?
When you define a link on a column you have the ability to use a substition string for the VALUE of a particular column... but I want to somehow pass the string value of the column.... anyone know how to do this?
Thanks

Not the value of the column.. I want the actual column name...
i.e.
Items on page to set:
txtbox1
txtbox2
Query:
Channel          INS1     INS2     INS3     INS4
Retail          13     1     333     55
Wholesale 4234 23 1 44Okay, so I want to make a link on the values in the query (the #'s) to set the values of the txtboxes...
example would be if I click on 333 I want it to set txtbox1="Retail" and txtbox2="INS3"
The channel one is fine I just use the substition string of #COL1# in the link and it replaces the value... but nothing that I can find on how ot set txtbox2="INS3"

• How to change recordset bahaviour to accept dynamic column names in the where clause

Hi
im using php-mysql and i make a recordset and i want to make the column names in the where clause to be dynamic like
"select id,name from mytable where $tablename-$myvar";
but when i do this my i break the recordset and it disappear
and when i use variables from advanced recordset it only dynamic for the value of the column not for the column name
and when i write the column name to dynamic as above by hand it truns a red exclamation mark on the server behaviour panel
so i think the only way is to change the recordset behaviour is it? if so How to make it accept dynamic column names?
thanks in advance.

As bregent has already explained to you, customizing the recordset code will result in Dreamweaver no longer recognizing the server behavior. This isn't a problem, but it does mean that you need to lay out your dynamic text with the Bindings panel before making any changes. Once you have changed the recordset code, the Bindings panel will no longer recognize the recordset fields.
Using a variable to choose a column name is quite simple, but you need to take some security measures to ensure that the value passed through the query string isn't attempting SQL injection. An effective way of doing this is to create an array of acceptable column names, and check that the value matches.
// create array of acceptable values
$valid = array('column_name1', 'column_name2', 'column_name3');
// if the query string contains an acceptable column name, use it
if (isset($_GET['colname']) && in_array($_GET['colname'], $valid)) {
$col = $GET['colname'];
} else {
// set a default value if the submitted one was invalid
$col = 'column_name1'
You can then use $col directly in the SQL query.

• How to rename a column name in a table? Thanks first!

I tried to drop a column age from table student by writing the
following in the sql plus environment as :
SQL> alter table student drop column age ;
but I found the following error
ORA-00905: 缺少关键字 (Lack of Key word)
I have oracle enterprise edition 8.0.5 installed at windows 2000
thank you
And I want to know how to rename a column name in a table?
thanks

In Oracle 8i, your syntax would have worked. However, if I
recall correctly, in Oracle 8.0, you can't rename or drop a
column directly. One way to get around that problem is to
create another table based on a select statement from your
original table, providing the new column name as an alias if you
want to change the column name, or omitting that column from the
select statement if you just want to drop it. Then drop the
original table. Then re-create the original table based on a
select statement from the other table. Then you can drop the
other table. Here is an example:
CREATE TABLE temporary_table_name
AS
SELECT age AS new_column_name,
other_columns
FROM   student
DROP TABLE student
CREATE TABLE student
AS
SELECT *
FROM   temporary_table_name
DROP TABLE temporary_table_name
Something that you need to consider before doing this is
dependencies. You need to make a list of all your dependecies
before you do this, so that you can re-create them afterwards.
If there are a lot of them, it might be worthwhile to do
something else, like creating a view with an alias for the
column or just providing an alias in a select. It depends on

• Using Column Name in a Second Table

I have two tables in a sheet, Data and Report. Data contains a column named Hours. How can I write a sum function in the Report table that sums the values in the Hours column in Data? I'd like to use a named reference instead of a row/column letter/number range for when the Hours column gets longer.

Thanks. I tried what you said, but initially it didn't work. I realized I needed to make the top row a header row, but that leads to a new question. All my columns now can be reference by name except the first column. Is there anything special I need to do to the first column? If the first column is "Hours", then when I type in "Hours" in my formula, the spreadsheet doesn't recognize it as a column name.
Yes, you must read the User Guide which explains :

• How to refer a column name in form report

Hi,
How can i refer a column name in the form report. My issue is that " I have a form report in that i have column name when i use to click the column name it should bring me to next page with the corresponding values of the column."
Here i have achieved that when i click on column name(in Page1) it brings me to next page(Page2). but in the next page(P2) i want to display(only display) the corresponding values of the selected column(Page1) but the values should not be editable and should not be in text field it should be in display only field.
So how can i write a sql query in display only souce field. Ie, how can i refer the column name in(page1) form report.

Hi Karthik
Very good morning.
I think u have column link in the first page and when u select a data in the first page and when u r moving to the next page the the corresponding data need to there is it correct.
For example You have table Employee and u have a select list in the first page contains name of the employee when u select one name and corresponding datas of the employee need to be in the second page.
So Dont clear the cache of the first page.
I the next page make the page items as display only and give the source of the all items a returning the single sql query.
If u have four items in the next page namely p2_sal, P2emp_no etc..
Then use like this
select sal from emp where emp_name=:P1_EMPNAME
Hopes this might helps you.
Thanks & Regards

• JTable - Help with column names and rowselection

Hi,
Is there anyone that can help me. I have successfully been able to load a JTable from an MS access database using vectors. I am now trying to find out how to hardcode the column names into the JTable as a string.
Can anyone please also show me some code on how to be able update a value in a cell (from ''N'' to ''Y'') by double clicking on that row.
How can I make all the other columns non-editable.
Here is my code:
private JTable getJTable() {
Vector columnNames = new Vector();
Vector data = new Vector();
try
// Connect to the Database
String driver = "sun.jdbc.odbc.JdbcOdbcDriver";
// String url = "jdbc:odbc:Teenergy"; // if using ODBC Data Source name
String url = "jdbc:odbc:Driver={Microsoft Access Driver (*.mdb)};DBQ=C:/Documents " +
"and Settings/Administrator/My Documents/mdbTEST.mdb";
String userid = "";
String password = "";
Class.forName( driver );
Connection connection = DriverManager.getConnection( url, userid, password );
// Read data from a table
String sql = "select * from PurchaseOrderView";
Statement stmt = connection.createStatement();
ResultSet rs = stmt.executeQuery( sql );
ResultSetMetaData md = rs.getMetaData();
int columns = md.getColumnCount();
// Get column names
for (int i = 1; i <= columns; i++)
columnNames.addElement( md.getColumnName(i) );
// Get row data
while (rs.next())
Vector row = new Vector(columns);
for (int i = 1; i <= columns; i++)
row.addElement( rs.getObject(i) );
data.addElement( row );
rs.close();
stmt.close();
catch(Exception e)
System.out.println( e );
if (jTable == null) {
jTable = new JTable(data, columnNames);
jTable.setAutoCreateColumnsFromModel(false);
jTable.setAutoResizeMode(javax.swing.JTable.AUTO_RESIZE_NEXT_COLUMN);
jTable.setShowHorizontalLines(false);
jTable.setGridColor(java.awt.SystemColor.control);
jTable.setRowSelectionAllowed(true);
jTable.setSelectionMode(javax.swing.ListSelectionModel.SINGLE_SELECTION);
jTable.setShowGrid(true);
return jTable;
}

this method has a default behavior to supply exactly what you're seeing: column names consisting of the capitalized letters, "A", "B", "C".Thanks Pete, had seen that but never really thought about it... about 10 days ago somebody needed to obtain Excel column names, I'd offered a rigorous solution and now see it would have been shorter and simpler (if a little heavier) to extend DefaultTableModel and provide the two additional methods needed (getOffsetCol and getColIndex).
Not much of a difference in LOC but certainly more elegant ;-)
