Make "Find by Name" a default?

Finding the name of a file in Tiger is quite annoying (unless I'm annoying myself by doing it the hard way)
The way that I've been looking for filenames is command-f, change pull-down menu to "Name".
The pull-down menu is set to "Kind" - is there a way to make it default to "Name"?
I don't think it's just a case of not wanting to learn a new technique - I've always loved the "Hit Command-f and type the filename and hit enter" method of finding something quick. Sure beats Windows!
(BTW - anyone know how to actually type the command-key? I couldn't find it in the Special Characters menu)

You have to change a file that Find consults to make it do what you (and pretty much everyone else) want as the default behavior. I changed mine so that the two default fields are Name and Raw Query, and the view is List view rather than Groups. I used the MacOSXHints article as the basis for my modifications:
http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20050501162147222
If you want to use my default_smart.plist it is here:
http://homepage.mac.com/francines/.Public/default_smart.plist.zip
You unzip it, then replace the original (you'll need to give authorization first, and make sure to keep a copy of the original or rename the original to defaultsmartold to keep it where it is).
"/System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/Resources/default_smart.plist"
After you've done this you'll want to run repair permissions then restart.

  • Find by Name can't be set as default?

When I hit command+F I get the Find window but it always defaults to Find By Content.
Can I make it default to Find By Name? From the search I did here in the forums there is no way but I thouht to ask again.
    Thanks in advance

While there isn't a thing you can do about the toolbar default, you CAN render it irrelevant. If you bring up the Find window using the shortcut of Command-Shift-F, then you will get "Name:Contains" with the cursor blinking in the blank entry field. Type the file name you want to find, and the results will be files whose actual file name contains whatever you typed. Furthermore, if you don't want to be bothered by using the shift key, you can go to System Prefs->Keyboard&Mouse->Shortcuts and reverse the two shortcuts, so that "Find..." with the "Kind" nonsense becomes Command-Shift-F, and "Find by Name..." is a simple Command-F. Restart the Finder after you make your changes, and then whenever you do Command-F you will get a search box with "Name:Contains" and the cursor blinking in the field for you to just type your search word-- the results will be files containing your word in their NAME, not the content.
There still ain't a dang thing you can do about the default of searching "This Mac" rather than the folder you were in when you invoked the search. Which is idiotic.
You may want to take a look at the article I wrote on Spotlight:

  • Change the Finder search default to Find by Name (search by file name) rather than Find by Content

I just discovered another way to set the finder Find option to default to "find by name" (search by file name). I'm using Mac OS X 10.8.5 Mountain Lion. I'm not sure if this works on other OS versions, but it probably does.
    Here's a step by step:
    #1: Open System Preferences
    #2: Click on "Keyboard"
    #3: Click on "Keyboard Shortcuts"
#4: Click on "Application Shortcuts" (on my system this was the last item located on the left-hand side window)
#5: Click the little "+" right below the right-hand side window
#6: Click on the "Application" menu and choose "finder.app"
#7: Click into the field "Menu Title:" and type "Find by Name..." (Type it exactly like that including the three dots. Don't type the quotes BTW.)
#8: Click into the field "Keyboard Shortcut:" and press the command-key and F at the same time. It should look like this ⌘F
    #9: Close System Preferences
That's it. Basically what you are doing is remapping the command-F key (⌘F) to "Find By Name".
I tried to post this to other previous discussions asking this same question, but they were all locked.

Apple doesn’t routinely monitor the discussions. These are mostly user to user discussions.
Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

  • Crystal Reports XI and Sun One 6.1 web server SP 5 Error finding JNDI name

I am trying to create a Crystal Reports XI report in a JSP using Sun One 6.1 Web server sp 5.
At this point I am getting the error Error finding JNDI name on Sun One

    I edited CRConfig.xml

  • How can I find the name of a file I downloaded four months ago?

I downloaded a file on either February 15th or 16th. Embarrassingly, I've lost the file, simply by forgetting its name. I need to be able to search my download history, by date. Does anyone know of a way to do this? I know that the history is kept that long, and that I haven't erased the history. Finding the date that I visited the website was easy using history and an approximate date, but download history is less intuitive.
And, no, revisiting the website doesn't help; the only way to find the name of the file there (it's an ebook) is to buy it again, which is NOT what I wish to do.
This was in Windows 7 Home Premium Edition, with FireFox v. 28.0 (yes, I know it's outdated; I haven't been using that computer much lately). I don't know what version of FireFox was installed at the time of the download -- whatever was most current at the time, as I usually make a practice of installing updates.

The downloads folder in the history manager? I'm not sure what you mean.
When I click on History, I see what I've put in the screenshot. Then it starts telling me where I've been today. Nothing about downloads, per se. I've been getting at those through Tools/Downloads.
I have FireFox set up to ask me where downloads should go, rather than automatically sending them to my Downloads folder in Windows, and even if it had automatically saved to Downloads, it wouldn't still be there now.
In a pinch, I suppose I could skip the first few in the downloads list, and then start right-clicking on individual downloads and selecting Go To Download Page, but I was hoping there might be some way to narrow it down, by getting at the date on downloads. That's fairly easy in History, but I don't see any way to do it in Tools/Downloads.

  • How to find table name for the fields from Standard Extractor in CRM system

How to find table name of fields from the standard extractor in CRM system ?
e.g. We use LBWE TCode in R/3 system to find table name for the field from Extractor VCSCL(e.g.).

    Hi ,
Please find the link below for understanding BW CRM analysis.
    http://help.sap.com/bp_biv135/html/bw.htm
activate the CRM DSs by scenario:
    1) Activate the application component hierarchy (tcode RSA9). Changes made to the application component hierarchy in the CRM system can be transferred to the BW using the "Edit Application Component Hierarchy" (SBIW - Postprocessing of DataSources).
SAP Note 434886 must be implemented in CRM 3.0 before the application component hierarchy is activated.
    2) Activate the Business Content DataSources (tcode RSA5).
Select/enter the application component and choose Execute (F8).
To compare the shipped and active versions, choose the 'Select Delta' pushbutton. If there is no active version of the DataSource, it is selected automatically.
To activate the shipped version, choose the 'Transfer DataSources' pushbutton.
    3) Management of the versions of the BW-Adapter metadata (tcode BWA5). All DataSources are displayed that are managed by the BW Adapter.
As in transaction RSA5 (Service API Metadata Activation), the 'Select Delta' function can be used to select the inactive DataSources or compare shipped and active versions.
You can also go directly to the screen for maintaining DataSources that are managed by the BW Adapter.
The 'Compare Version' function makes a detailed comparison of the shipped and active versions.
All BW-Adapter metadata is considered when versions are compared:
    Header information (Table SMOXHEAD)
    Mapping information (Table SMOXRELP)
    Global selection conditions (Table SMOXGSEL)
    Attribute key fields (Table SMOXAFLD)
    Hope this helps.

  • How to make a custom template the default for Apple Mail (10.7.5)?

    Hi,
I'm OK with making a new custom template in Apple Mail.  It shows up fine once under "custom" in the stationary pane (and once I take off signature in a new email).  But... that's a lot of trouble to go through everytime I want to send an email.
So the question is: can I make my custom template my default for all my emails, unless I want to manually change it?  Seems like this should be possible but I can't figure it out and haven't run into any solutions (only on how to make a template).
Do I really have to select it each time?
    Best,
    Joel

As an FYI: I just solved the problem by going the "low road." I'll be a bit laborious in case someone else wants a solution at a later date (I know I Googled the topic and found nothing). I experimented by simply:
    Opening a new email message
    Selecting my custom template
Copying the custom signature (Select All)
    Opening another new email message
Selecting Edit on the Signature pulldown menu
Hitting the plus symbol to create/add a new signature in the pane
    Pasting into the new signature
    Naming it
Selecting "Choose signature" at the bottom of the signatures pane
    And violà!!
It now appears as a possible selection *and* as the default.
Better yet - it is now my default and will work as a reply to an email.
I think I got it all right in the list above.
OK, granted, this is a pretty simply signature - a list of my website, SoundCloud, twitter etc with those names in bold and a graphic of my color logo - but... it works! YMMV.
Give it to Apple to make it so simple that any fool could do it (that would be me), you wouldn't need a "specialized" app, and - of course - there wouldn't even be instructions on how to do it!
    Best,
    Joel

  • How do we find instance name in ORACLE 10g

    Hi All,
How do we find SID name in Oracle 10g
    Thanks in advance
    Pandiarajan

    Apology accepted.
But yes, of course I was harsh (not at you, actually, but at the plonker who thinks he can tell me that 'echo $something' is "not right").
Do you know how many questions could be answered here if people weren't forever debating perfectly acceptable answers? If people actually stopped to read what had been written before deciding to add their tuppence-worth? If people stopped to think, "well, that's not how I would answer it... but it's good enough".
I see so many threads here where 58 people dive in to a thread to say, 'Me too'. Another 42 will dive in to say, 'that's not right' when actually it is. And another 137 or so will usually chime in to say nothing very much except to demonstrate that they didn't understand something that was explained a lot earlier on quite clearly. Threads go on and on, when actually all that was sought originally was a simple answer to a technical issue. God knows why it happens.
I have no problem at all being asked for clarification. I have no problem at all being corrected and having someone point out that actually that parameter doesn't exist, you made a typo, that's not the command to achieve X. When I am technically wrong, I would expect nothing less. But where so much of my time gets wasted is demonstrated in this thread perfectly. I answered the question in one post. It might not have been a perfect answer. There are many different ways of coming up with the answer on Windows, for example, and yet I didn't mention the registry at all or the Control Panel/System applet for checking environment variables once. And yet, despite all of that, in answer 1 there was sufficient information to make the OP happy. But no, that's not enough to shut some people up (and I am again not referring to you at this point).
I don't know what it is. Some sense of, maybe, in a democracy my opinion is as good as yours even if it's entirely unnecessary, potentially confusing and adds absolutely nothing to the outcome? A desire on the part of some people to boost their post numbers?
Too right I'm harsh. I am results-driven. I am here because I want to help others. Not because I think my opinions deserve a hearing even though the answer was posted ages ago. When I see something that looks like the opposite of that -grandstanding, look how clever I am, my opinion counts too- yeah, it annoys me somewhat. And largely because I usually end up having to untangle the confusion caused by unnecessary "contributions" from others.

TNS-01101: Could not find service name LISTENER_SCAN1
Please give your suggestions and help on this issue.

    HI,
Try to configure the tnsnames.ora in this format and let me know
if you are using load balancing , try
    TBESTDB =
      (DESCRIPTION =
        (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = node1_vip)(PORT = 1531))
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = node2_vip)(PORT = 1531))
    (LOAD_BALANCE = yes)
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SERVER = DEDICATED)
    (SERVICE_NAME = TBESTDB)
And you can add below if you would like to  connect to specific instance
    RAC1 =
      (DESCRIPTION =
        (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = rac1-vip)(PORT = 1521))
        (CONNECT_DATA =
          (SERVER = DEDICATED)
          (SERVICE_NAME = rac.oracle.com)
          (INSTANCE_NAME = rac1)
    RAC2=
      (DESCRIPTION =
        (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = rac2-vip)(PORT = 1521))
        (CONNECT_DATA =
          (SERVER = DEDICATED)
          (SERVICE_NAME = rac.oracle.com)
          (INSTANCE_NAME = rac2)
Note: Replace the SID, Servicename, hostname, port etc according to your environment, And also make sure that the tnsnames.ora should be in a proper format(eg : even the opening and closing bracket should be in correct order. If u add additional space also it will throw error..)

  • How to make Excel, Word, Powerpoint the Default programs?

    Hey guys,
Just got my new MBP, and I need to know how to make Excel, Word, Powerpoint the default programs when opening one of their files? Currently, the trial version of Iwork opens the programs which drives me crazy.....
So, for example, for an Excel file, I want Excel to open it, NOT Numbers......etc....
    Thanks In advance.

Select a file of that type in the Finder, choose Get Info from the File menu, change the Open With entry for it to the desired application, click on Change All, and confirm the action.

  • How can I make folder View Options the default in Snow Leopard?

Hi everybody! Here I am, learning to Mac!
When I do a secondary click on an open folder's background and click on +show visualization options+ (actually, +mostrar opciones de visualización+ in spanish), there's an option +set as default+ ( +ajustes por omisión+ ) which, as far as I understood, should change all the rest folder's aspect, as icon's size, font size, background image and so on... but all the rest folder's aspect keep being shown as before, just the folder where I am working changes.
My questions are: if I am wrong with the use of that "ajustes por omisión", what is it for? And how can I personalize the aspect of all folders on my mac?
    Thanks for your help

It's "show view options" in English. Also obtained by typing CMD+J
Those only apply to the top-level folder. Each folder you open uses whatever you've elected to use as the defaults. Select a folder, CMD+J, set the view as you desire, click on Use as Default button. That setting will be used for all windows that you open in the future that have never been opened previously. All other windows that you opened will retain whatever view you previously selected for them.
If you want to reset everything to one view, close all open Finder windows, launch the Terminal app (/Applications/Utilities/), copy & paste this command into the window that pops up,
    find ./ -name ".DS_Store" -depth -exec rm {} \;
hit the return key, quit the Terminal app, restart, open a Finder window, CMD+J, set up the view options as desired, click the Use as Defaults button, and close the view options window. Now, every Finder window you open will have this view.

  • Automator -- Find X name contains - why can't i?

i really dislike the way spotlight searches, I nearly always have to stop, change to "name contains" then use that box to search.
I thought Automator could skip those steps for me. There IS an action "Find Finder items" and it defaults to "name contains", interestingly. First I tried making that action by itself a workflow, then an app. I could get it to bring up the search by name contains window, but after I entered my term and hit return, the box went away and no results appeared anywhere.
So then I fumbled around trying to create a new folder, then search...no.
This seems the essence of simplicity..what am I missing?

Sounds like you're using the Finder's Find function, because a pure Spotlight search doesn't have a "name contains" option. You can replace the default Finder Find window by creating a new smart folder: Finder->File->New Smart Folder, tailor it to your needs, including where you want it to search by selecting Other and adding items. Mine has filename contains (not name contains—they're two different animals) and it searches in /System and /Library. Once you've tailored it properly, enter a name window, and save it to the Desktop. Once that's done, then drag it into TextEdit and change:
    <key>RawQuery</key>
    <string>(kMDItemFSName = '*<name you searched for>*'cd) && (kMDItemContentType != com.apple.mail.emlx) && (kMDItemContentType != public.vcard)</string>
    <key>SearchCriteria</key>
    to read:
    <key>RawQuery</key>
    <string></string>
    <key>SearchCriteria</key>
and save the file. Rename it default_smart.plist
Open /System/Library/CoreServices/, CONTROL_click on the Finder.app, and select show package contents. Drill down to /Contents/Resources/, rename the current default_smart.plist to default_smart.plist.bak, drag the default_smart.plist from the Desktop into /Contents/Resources/, close all windows, OPT-click on Dock's Finder icon, and select Relaunch. Now, CMD+F and see your new default Find window.

  • How to make a short name of iweb

Hi.. anyone have an idea to make a short name of iweb when my friends ask about " what's your web name... I cant remember cause it too long " like mind ... http://web.mac.com/jokertgfoto/iWeb/joker/Welcome.html how can I make....http://[email protected] . I need mac to solve this help too. Many thanks

Well, as far as telling people about your iWeb URL, all you have to tell them is the short iWeb URL...
    http://web.mac.com/jokertgfoto
This will always lead to your default starting homepage, which is set in the SiteOrganizer in iWeb. So you don't have to specify the rest of the URL as you have typed out....that's an improvement already, isn't it?
But if you like, you can get register for you own domain name at any number of places like GoDaddy or Yahoo or 1&1...there are LOTS of domain registrars. This should cost somewhere in the vicinity of $10 a year. Then once you have your domain name, you can setup a feature of domain names called "Domain Forwarding". This will link your domain name to your iWeb URL so that anyone who types your domain name, like http://www.jokertgfoto.com will get taken directly to http://web.mac.com/jokertgfoto
I hope this answers your question, but feel free to post back if you need any clarification.

  • Help, how to make Finder to refresh custom icon programmatically

    Hi
I have two file both are same name, e.g. 1.rtf, but with different custom icon.
When I copied the first 1.rtf to an USB drive, the custom icon was displayed correctly.
However, when copied the second file to the USB drive to replace the first file, Finder still showed the custom icon of the first file.
How can I solve this issue and how can I make Finder to refresh the custom icon programmatically.
    Thanks

Hi KT, thanks your reply & help
but result is same. The following is my experiment
STEP 1: copy 1.rtf to USB drive, the result is OK.
STEP 2: copy another 1.rtf to USB drive, Finder still showing the 1st file icon and a little bit blurred
STEP 3: copy 3rd file without custom icon, the result is OK
STEP 4: using following code to set its custom icon, the result is still show the custom icon of the 1st file
    [[NSWorkspace sharedWorkspace] setIcon:image forFile:[filePath stringValue]  options:nil];
It seems that Finder will has some cache to store file's custom icon. If use "Force Quit" to relaunch Finder, it become correct but how can I use program code to refresh it without "Force Quit"?
