Making a forced return part of an autonumber

I want to format my chapters so that the number and the title are on different
lines, like this:
Chapter 4
Really Interesting Stuff
The forced line break after the chapter number should really be part of the
autonumber format, but I can't find a way to make FM6 (the version I'm running)
insert one. Adding a "\r" at the end of the autonumber format has no effect.
My current approach is to manually insert a forced line break at the beginning
of the title text, but this is a hack. Is there a better way? Googling around
hasn't yielded anything helpful.
I'm running FM6 on WinXP.
Thanks,
Scott

I tried Peter Meyer's method of connecting two text frames, and it worked beautifully for the document and the TOC. However, when I generated a PDF through PostScript and Distiller, for the bookmarks, I got duplicated numbers for the chapters, as in:
1 1 Introduction
2 2 Getting Started
3 3 Using the Interface
I can manually delete the extra numbers in the bookmarks, but I haven't found a way to prevent them from being generated.
Does anyone know how to get around this? Apparently, Acrobat thinks the two text frames require two numbers. Is this an Acrobat bug? Any ideas.
Thanks for any help on this.

  • How to control the force return in table cell data?

    I have some xml format files.When I import them into FrameMaker,They display as table data.but when the data is very long in table cell,I want to control the new line by myself.for example,I add some \r\n in my xml file data,then in FrameMaker,It can identify the \r\n, force return.In framemaker I don't know the actual symbol that means the newline.How Can I deal with the problem?thank you!

    Hi Russ,
    yes, but you have to agree that forcing a return in the SOURCE content is really not a wise thing to do - It would be better to break the content into multiple paragraphs or used an XSLT to determine the column width and insert your own breaks in a version of the XML for rendering in Frame. If, at a later date, your templates in Frame change to allow wider columns in your table, then you'd have to go back into the source code and change every occurrence of the c/r in the data - Yeuch! Better to transform the data once, before importing into Frame and then if the col-width changes it is a simple task to change the width in the XSLT - personally, I would make sure the EDD and DTD allows multi-lines in the table cell and then break-up the data to fit the table cell size in an XSLT before importing. Then you don't taint your source code...and it is quite easy to do this is an XSLT...

  • Forced return, non-breaking hyphens & spaces, suppress hyphenation + XML

    Forced return (linefeed), non-breaking hyphens and spaces, suppress hyphenation.
    None of these are preserved when exporting from FrameMaker to XML, since they do not seem to be represented by a Unicode code point. My question to you is: How do you deal with those things in XML?
    The last issues (non-breaking and suppress hyphen) have recently been brought up in:
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/450363
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/459503
    Forced return is a common thing in many FrameMaker documents to improve readability of certain phrases.
    For export of FM to XML, there have been proposals to use a special element with a prefix just to capture the special FrameMaker symbol. It works, and may be a valid useful path in certain cases, but I think that it is a questionable way of dealing with it for several reasons:
    It is only relevant for roundtrip, since these special elements will hardly be interpreted by other XML tools, which of course limits the value of XML export.
    It is unwieldy, to say the least, to require the user to insert special elements for saying simple things that otherwise are just natural key strokes in the regular text flow, and which are not perceived as structural elements of information. Most users would think of these symbols/charactes as control characters, and there is no validation warning that says you may not use these characters/symbols.
    An element is used for formatting purposes only, whereas all other elements are used for content or structure.
    There is no automatic way of transforming an existing text that has these "symbols" into some special element when a document is structured with a conversion table.
    There is no automatic way of transforming a structured FM document to XML such that these special "symbols" get translated to some suitable XML construct.
    If the last point could be solved, i.e if all those control characters or markers could automatically be translated to a suitable XML representation, then I would consider the whole issue as solved, otherwise not.
    Even without FrameMaker, how do people deal with these things in "pure xml". For instance, when XML is used for publishing (which I know Arnis Gubins is doing), there will guaranteed be a need to control both hyphenation and line breaks. So how do you (they) do that?
    How do other vendors cope with these issues, e.g XPP?

    Lynne,
    As anyone can see, entity declarations have not really been in the domain of my expertise (understatement), but I might just learn bits and pieces...
    Thanks! I have now done some more reading in various pdfs, such as scructapps etc, but also the w3c xml spec, all of which I have "read" before, but reading is not always the same as understanding...
    I now have used the "entity approach" to make both discretionary hyphen and suppress hyphen work, so that it is represented in the XML export and round-trips just fine.
    Forced return still puzzles me somewhat though: I have a working solution for that using the same entity approach, but it will not work for text ranges (although it is a bit odd to have forced returns in text range elements). Moreover, I am not certain that it really is the best way. In reading other posts on this issue, I have seen that some people want forced returns to really be linefeeds in the xml output, with no other linefeeds, and conversely, when importing xml that are "formatted" in lines, such as code, they want to preserve that.
    One  way to achieve that is to use:
         reader line break is forced return;
         writer line break is 1000 characters;  (or more characters)
    Then it is completely symmetric (i.e works also if some other app has generated the xml with intentional line breaks. And this method is global for all elements, and it works for me.
    Another way to achieve this is to use the following, but it is only valid inside an element:
         preserve line breaks;
         writer line break is 1000 characters;
    Then it is also completely symmetric (in the above sense), and it works for me.
    The latter method has the drawback that it only works for text in the element; it is not inherited to its children.
    But if we look at only one element, what is the difference between the two methods?
    As far as I have been able to see, the results are identical! Why two methods? The first one seems more powerful and general(?)
    Scrutinizing the documentation though, it says that 'preserve line breaks' will add an attribute 'xml:space', but I can't see that in my output?
    Also, concerning the documentation for line break, it says that FM would ignore line breaks when exporting, but it does NOT do that (fortunately). Forced returns always result in linefeeds, no matter what.
    I would be thankful if these issues could be explained, or elaborated.
    Also, would you recommend against any of these methods?
    With my preferred method of using the global 'reader line break is forced return' instead of a local (or many local) 'preserve line breaks', there is of course the danger that when importing xml, it is absolutely necessary that the xml really only has line breaks where they are intended, and not generated every 80 characters or so!
    Is there anything that says it is "ugly" or "bad style" to honor line breaks, and generate long lines?
    Finally, why do we need to limit the number of characters written in one line these days? Why 80, why 1000, why not an unlimited number of characters!?
    Will software these days really crash if given a very long line (assuming that it doesn't exceed total ram memory of course)?
    Sorry about so many questions, but I can't find any answers to them in the docs I have read and searched.

  • Customer return part

    From service department customer return part will be send to plant for quality check.
    I enabled 06 inspection lot in plant, so quality will do inspection and raise notification, after that part will be send to supplier for replacement under warranty
    If supplier sends the replacement part, same will be inspected by QA and post to unrestricted stock.
    My doubts are..
    1. How could quality person will the know the defect type of the component while receiving from service dept.
    2. While getting replacement part from supplier, how could he knows the replacement is for the particular notification.
    Please clarify my doubts

    hi,
    if it is internal one than u need to give the nofication of Q1 type to service deptt. they feed all details and the findings against the complaint, with help of and BUS2078 that is workflow object u configure it and it will help u for communication of that information along with outbound delivery, sales order and Inspection lot number.
    bu using this QA deptt. amy proceed there CAPA and feed the results against customer return lot and posted the stck if it is purely rejected in blocked otherwise reprocess it if it is partially ok, and if fully ok than may sales deptt. debat with cutomer for return or may sale to another customer its managerial decision.
    while as far as SAP functionality is concern it is the best use of Quality notification Q1 type and in ur scenario CRM is already there so it is very easy for fast communication and rectification process.

  • XML for Forced Return

    I use XSLT to create XML documents to be opened in FrameMaker and converted to structured documents. I have one element (called SyntaxPara) in which I'd like multiple lines separated by forced returns, as indicated by "{" symbol in the document (or \r in the Find/Change dialog). Anybody know what the XML coding would be to specify a forced return? I cannot seem to nail it down. I need to do this because my structured template is supporting styles used with unstructured FrameMaker, and that happens to be how they're doing it. Thanks,

    John,
    I do not know what the Kosher XML method is, but you can define an element in your EDD, say Break, which has no content or attributes. The EDD defines its formatting as character formatting and a prefix or suffix that is the return character, namely \r. Note that this requires an update to your EDD. Your XSLT would then translate the XML object that indicates a break into the element Break.

  • RMA for Return parts

    Hi,
    I have a question here. Do any one use RMA method for the return parts?
    If we create a new a part # (RMA) to identify from the original part #, how to later re-align to the original part # if we need to ship the same to the customer back?
    What are the pros & cons of going for RMA?
    Please do let me know the steps to use RMA.
    thx,
    pri

    Hi Pri;
    I think this can be done thru Mat. Determination. We can create a new Material Determination procedure and substitute the referred material with the RMA material.
    I have not tried this though. I think this should work.
    Steps would be
    1. Create a New Material Determination Procedure (SPRO-S&D-Basic Funcs-Mat.Deter.(This is similar to the condition tech'q
    2. Maintian necessary master Data.
    let us know if this works.

  • Returning parts to Apple question

    I called apple out of warrenty and paid $80 for a new power brick for my display. Was getting curious what went wrong with my original brick and new 100% it was the brick that was bad so I hacked open the brick and saw the grounding point was loose.
    Now I get the new brick and the return slip states I must return the original parts otherwise I get charged 'full retail price'. I can't imagine they're going to charge me more if I don't send it back? Other websites sell the same part for $80 too. So do they have inflated retail prices that they slap you with?
    Anyone have experience with this kind of thing? (They're closed otherwise I'd just call em.)

    Given the fact you found the brick had a loose grounding point, I would call AppleCare and inform them of that.
    We are just end users here, and we aren't allowed to guess Apple's policy. See terms of use on the right. Your best course of action is to discuss it directly with Apple.

  • How to force return?

    Hi
    can I force a function to return after specified time interval, without end of normal execution reached? (this can be useful when the function is in blocking state )....
    Thanks

    Hi
    can I force a function to return after specified time
    interval, without end of normal execution reached?
    (this can be useful when the function is in blocking
    state )....
    Do you just want to terminate it?
    Then closing the resource that it is blocked on would do the trick. Or interrupting it. As suggested above a seperate thread is normally going to be needed for this.
    However that only works if is is actually blocked on a resource. If it isn't then the above will have no impact.
    And in neither case would it necessarily cause a 'return' but rather an exception. You can catch the exception though and deal with it that way.
    Some resources already have timeout mechanisms so you might want to consider that as well.

  • Vendor Return Part II

    I am returning material to vendor by 122 movement type. Creating excise invoice by J1IS wrt the material document. My RG23 part I is there for return. But iam not getting any update in Part II. How to get part II enties in case of vendor return.

    HI,
    I am returning material to vendor by 122 movement type. Creating excise invoice by J1IS wrt the material document. My RG23 part I is there for return. But iam not getting any update in Part II. How to get part II enties in case of vendor return.
    While returning material to vendor then its nothing but indirect sales activity
    so in J1IS its sales outgoing excise invoice and balance of that invoice you will get at time of utilization in J2IUN in SD side  at header level

  • Why do text variables using Running Header character style translate forced returns as a word space in the running head on the first page but close up the space on subsequent pages?

    In an InDesign document that requires 3 different Chapter head paragraph styles (to cope with differrent length headings) I've set up the running heads on the master page with a text variable using the Running header (character style) option. The character style I've assigned to this is an empty character style that is applied to all 3 chapter head paragraph styles.
    Some chapter heads require a forced line break, so that the line breaks are aethesically pleasing. On the first page the text variable translates this forced line break as a word space in the running head, but on subsequent pages it ignores the forced line break. This means that if you have a word space before the forced line break, on the first page you get a double word space and on subsequent pages the running head sets correctly with a single word space. But if you remove the word space before the forced line break in the chapter head text, the first running head sets correctly with forced line break interpreted as a single word space, but on subsequest pages the space is closed up.
    This only seems to be a problem when the character style option is used for header text variables. If a paragraph style is used the forrced line break is interpreted as a a single word space in all instances, both on the foirst page and subsequent pages.
    This would appear to be a bug in how text variables are applied when using the Running header (character style) option. I can't see any other reason why the text variable would beheave differently on the first page and on subsequent pages. There is only one master page, so it isn't a case of their being an error between a main master page and a chapter opener master page.
    Does anyone have any solutionss, or know if this problem has been fixed in subsequent releases of InDesign (I'm using CS6 ID version 8.0)
    Thanks

  • Making a printable return envelope attatched to form

    Hi guys, I have made a really nice invoice form and would like to include a return envelope with the company mailing address and populated with the customers return address from the invoice form that could be printed.
    So far I have tried the # 10 envelope template in designer 8 and have included the company address label and customer return address area, however when using he print button it wants to print a full 8.5 X11 page instead of the proper envelope size.
    I would like to have the envelope hidden from the invoice form with only a click to print envelope button visible. Can this be done and how?
    Any help is greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Frank

    Did you ever find out how to do this? I have designed an envelope that populates with client address that the user will need to print from the envelope tray of the printer.

  • Trouble making a CLR Function - Part 2

    I successfully made a CLR split function in c# and registered it in sql server.  Now I added another function to the assembly called FormatString. First I had to drop the function Split, and then the assembly CLRHelper, then I added the assembly and
    function split back into sql server with the updated assembly.
    Here's a the new c# function I added (simplified with less parameters).
    [SqlFunction(DataAccess = DataAccessKind.None)]
    public static SqlString FormatString(SqlString format, SqlString paramIndexs, SqlString parm1, SqlString parm2)
    // ..do stuff
    return (SqlString)outPut;
    I added it to the database like this:
    Create Function FormatString(
    @format nvarchar(max),
    @paramIndexs nvarchar(max),
    @parm1 nvarchar(max),
    @parm2 nvarchar(max)
    returns nvarchar(max)
    --Results nvarchar(max)
    AS
    --External name CLRHelper.[CLRFunctions].Split
    External name CLRHelper.[CLRHelper.CLRFunctions].FormatString
    GO
    So far, no errors.  then I try to use it like this:
    select * from [dbo].[FormatString](@Format, @SomeValue1, @SomeValue2 )
    and I get the error msg:
    Msg 208, Level 16, State 3, Line 8
    Invalid object name 'dbo.FormatString'.
    Which I thought was odd since I can call the other function in the same assembly the same way:
    select * from dbo.Split('1,2,3,4,5:6:7~8~9',',:~')
    Any idea what i'm doing wrong?
    Thank you.

  • Text box forces returns in Fireworks 8

    I finding that certain letter combination is Fireworks 8 text
    box causes return to appear in my text. For example "one wave is
    bigger" comes out as
    "o
    ne wave is bigger"
    or 'not on my time' becomes
    'not
    o
    n my time'
    this is very annoying and I can't stop it - has anyone had
    similar problems? Can they help?

    It's a Kerning error that sometimes shows up if you change
    fonts a
    couple of times after typing. You can usually fix it by
    unchecking Auto

    I need a way to fix this problem because I have not been able to use my ipod touch in a few months

    Try what you can (no lock button) here:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iPod fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
