? Making device choose airport express over extreme??

I have an Airport express extending the network of my AirPort Extreme. Sometimes i still have a weak signal even when sitting very near the express. When I check the express via the airport utility, it shows 8 or more devices (including my laptop and phone) connected to my extreme...which is in the other end of the house....and only a couple of devices working off of the express....can I specify that I want my laptop to search and find and work off of the express so it will get a better signal rather than staying linked to the extreme several rooms away? All I have been able to find is my "main network" and my "guest network", which both broadcast, but no way to specify which device should be using which router?

The AirPort Express extends your "main" network since the Guest Network cannot be extended.
Unfortunately, there is no way to tell a given device where to connect since it is supposed to pick up the strongest signal automatically. Mac computers will usually switch from one access point to another, but iOS devices like iPhone, iPad etc. tend to stay connected to the "original" wireless access point.
if you move the iPhone across the house, you may need to power it off, wait a minute, then power it back up near the AirPort Express so that it will pick up a signal from the Express.
The Guest Network, if you have it enabled, is taking up half of your available bandwidth, so unless you really have "guests", it would be a good idea to turn off that network so your main network will receive maximum bandwidth.

  • I have an old Airport Express I want to use to extend WiFI (which is best Airport Express or Extreme) and to have a HD for storing Itunes connected to the old Airport as well.         I would also like to have the new Airport hardwired to my Mac (desktop)

I am willing to buy a new Airport Express or Extreme so I can get at least one LAN port - but only if I can use that LAN port to connect to my MAC (desktop) so it doenst have to get internet via the WiFi- AND so I can set it up as its own hot spot.  I think I saw that was possible??  That way my guest network would be separate from my home Network.  Just trying to get the best layout. I have cable modem to old Airport now and USB from it to printer.
Maybe a new Airport - again USB to printer and LAN to MAC(?) then old Airport elsewhere in the house to extend the signal and use USB off it to hard drive to store Itunes?  Would LOVE to have it there to use for Airplay etc- Is that possible- I have read many comments and still not sure if it is possible or not.
Baxically I need a simple solution to storing all my photos- music and movies (MAC only has 500GB) AND have a great back up; Currently have a 1TB drive as Time Machine - so could use that for back up- but running out of space on MAC for all the media I am saving.  THANKS!!

You are asking several different questions. If you need to store your photos, music, and movies on an external volume, you certainly can. Any externally connected hard disk drive will work, connected either directly to your Mac or to your Time Capsule as a shared volume.
You should not rely upon using that as a backup device though. Although you certainly may use it for both purposes, it is a better idea to have dedicated backup devices for a variety of reasons not limited to redundancy. You would not want to simultaneously lose all your pictures as well as your backup. If they are all on the same device, that could happen. Furthermore, a backup cannot back up the volume on which it is running.
As for adding an Extreme or Express, using its LAN port for your iMac, and then enable Internet sharing so you can effectively use the iMac as a "hotspot", you can do that too, but I am unclear on what benefit you believe this arrangement would convey for you.
An Extreme's Guest network is separate from its Main network; that is the reason for having it.

  • 5.2 update does not send audio from video played via Apple TV to AirPlay-enabled speakers and devices or AirPort Express.

I just updated my Apple TV to release 5.2, which is supposed to give Apple TV the ability to "Send stereo audio from movies, TV shows, and other videos on Apple TV to AirPlay-enabled speakers and devices (including AirPort Express and other Apple TVs)." Problem is, this does not seem to be the case.
I have two AirPlay enabled devices:
    1) Bose SoundLink Air
    2) AirPort Express
In the Apple TV menu, I selected Settings, AirPlay, Bose SoundLink Air. I then played a video; the audio from the video played from my projector's speakers - not from the Bose speaker. I then went back to Apple TV's Settings/AirPlay and selected "Airport Express" (which connected via an aux cable to a speaker)...audio continued to play over my projector's speaker. I can, by the way, play audio on both the Bose and the speaker connected to the Airport Express if I select either of them from the AirPlay menu.
Am I doing something wrong, or is the 5.2 update not working as described?

No. But, are your speakers only connected to the AE or are they also connected to an amplifier?
You would need to use a Toslink cable to go from the Apple TV to the speakers/amp.
I don't use this or know a lot about it, but it is wildly popular, inexpensive and may be of help:

  • AirPort Express over Ethernet lost the connection

I have an AirPort Express device. It's works well, if I connect it over WLAN. If I connect the AirPort Express over Ethernet via cable, then after about 15 minutes, I lost the connection between my PC and the AirPort Express.
Does I have to change settings in my router?

then when I try to switch it to extending
That is not the correct setting to use.
"Extending" is only used when an AirPort connects using a wireless connection to another AirPort router.
When the AirPort connects using Ethernet, you have to use the "Create a wireless network" setting.
It might be a lot easier if you simply start all over again and let the configuration "wizard" do most of the work for you. All that you really have to do is name the network, name the Express, enter the password and click Next.  Everything else is handled by the configuration utility.
Post back if you are not sure how to do this.

  • Problems with Airport Express and Extreme

I have tried to set up Airport Express and Extreme.  Both proceeded normally in the Air Port Utility until the final stages.  Then it said it couldn't find the devices. When I tried again (many times), I couldn't even start the process, even though it did that the first time for both.  I'm stumped.

To set up the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) as a bridge, either connect to the AEBSn's wireless network or temporarily connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to one of the LAN port of the AEBSn, and then, using the AirPort Utility, make these settings:
AirPort Utility > Select the AEBSn > Manual Setup > Internet > Internet Connection tab
    Connection Sharing: Off (Bridge Mode)
Click Update to apply the new settings
AirPort Express Base Station (AX) - iTunes Setup
Either connect to the AX's wireless network or connect directly, using an Ethernet cable, to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then using the AirPort Utility in "Manual Setup" mode, make the following changes:
AirPort Utility > Select the AX > Manual Setup > AirPort > Wireless
Wireless Mode: Join a wireless network
    Network Name: <existing AEBSn's wireless network>
Wireless Security: <select the encryption type of the existing wireless network>
Wireless Password: <enter the existing wireless network password>
Verify Password: <re-enter the existing wireless network password>
AirPort Utility > Select the AX > Manual Setup >Music
    Enable AirPlay (checked)
iTunes Speaker Name: <enter desired speaker name>
    iTunes Speaker Password: (optional)
    Verify Password: (optional)
Click Update to write the new settings to the AX

  • WHICH IS BETTER AS A BUSINESS TRAVELER-AIRPORT EXPRESS OR EXTREME

Can someone please advise me as a business traveler since this is my first Mac in many, many years whether the Airport Express or Extreme would be the "best fit" for me?
I'm assuming Express would be the idea situation....thanks!

Hmmm. To be honest, I don't see how this would help you at an airport. They are all using wireless for public use. You simply locate the wireless network with your computer and log on (and pay the fees via your credit card unless its a free service).
Power wise, you would need an AC outlet to plug the Express in. Those are sometimes difficult to find as well at the airport. But again, having an AirPort Express around when a wireless network is already available would not benefit you in any way.

  • An error occurred while connecting to the AirPlay device "Stereo Airport Express G". The network connection failed.

When attempting to play iTunes 11.1.2 music wirelessly from my Mac Mini to stereo speakers connected to an AE "G" I get the following message: An error occurred while connecting to the AirPlay device “Stereo Airport Express G”.   However, when I attempt to play internet radio from an iPod Touch wirelessly to the same speakers connected to the same AE "G", it works fine.
Finally, when I swap out the "G" for an AE "N" connected to the same speakers Airplay works fine, both from the Mini and the iPod.
Why would the iPod connection work while the Mini connection not?

I have what sounds like a very similar issue.
I had my Denon 3312ci working perfectly with Airplay from my 2013 iMac running iTunes. Upgraded to iTunes 11.1.3, and now when I attempt to Airplay direct from iTunes to the 3312, it plays for about half a second and then stops. Displayed on the Amp then says "Assigning Network". The amp starts dropping ping packets at this point. About 15-20 seconds later the pings start coming back, but no Airplay.
I tried different network cables, resetting the microprocessor, a different switch, changing between DHCP and static IP. Was about to make a warranty call to Denon, when I thought maybe I should try Airplaying directly from iphone and ipad. Much to my surprise, it worked from those devices.
I prefer to use my iMac to Airplay rather than ipad/iphone as I found I got next to no audio drop outs using it that way (they are both using wired network), where as ipad/iphone occasionally would get a moment of silence in the middle of a song.
My network set up is fine. I can use internet radio and connect to DLNA services fine on the amp. It is just airplay between iTunes 11.1.3 and the amp where the issue lies.
No fixes as yet, but I have logged a support call with Denon Australia to see what they say.

  • Hi, I'm thinking of buying the Airport Express or Extreme for my school dormitory, would i need to plug them into the already existing school internet via LAN cable or do the products just work by themselves?

Hi, I'm thinking of buying the Airport Express or Extreme for my school dormitory, would i need to plug them into the already existing school internet via LAN cable or do the products just work by themselves?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
AirPort stations aren't modems, so they have to be connected to the modem you are already using. The AirPort Extreme and Express have a WAN port, where you have to plug an Ethernet cable that has to be connected to the modem.
After doing this, you can set up the AirPort station by using AirPort Utility. If you have Windows, download AirPort Utility from the Apple website > http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1547

  • Airport Express over heating

Has anyone had issues with their Airport Express over heating and turning off?  This has been happening to me for the last two weeks.  It works for a few days, then suddenly goes dark.  I have to unplug it from the wall for about 5 minutes and then it starts right up again.
    Thanks!

    Hi gang,
Tesserax has supplied accurate and valuable information.  I'd like to add a few additional "food for thought" comments.  The Airport Express is essentially a radio tranceiver, meaning that it switches back and forth between its transmitting mode and receiving mode.  The majority of the heat is generated  when the unit is in the transmit mode.  Some applications such as streaming videos, especially movies, and using i-tunes to broadcast music from a computer to your stereo, will cause the heat stress to rise significantly.  The weather in my area is creating temps of 84 degrees F, and high humidity.  On days like this, I always turn on the fan near my Airport EX. and crank it up.  This could possibly help the situation you're dealing with.
My version of airport software 7.6.1 has the ability to adjust the transmitter power output to different levels from 100% on down.  Of course turning the output level down will ease the stress on the  airport, but will weaken the signal as well.

  • Differences between AirPort Express and Extreme?

  • Any software differences between new airport express and extreme?

I was wondering if there are any features or configuration differences between the two, such as configuring VPN passthrough.
The only difference I can see is using the USB for hard drive use.
Also, do you think the performance will be similar.  I know the time capsule actually rated slower than the extreme even though they use similar hardware.

  • Weird semi-loss of AirPort Express and Extreme

I have an odd symptom where, when I launch iTunes, my AirPort Express is sometimes listed is not available from my Power Mac G% (running 10.4.8).
When I launch AirPort Admin Utility, NONE OF MY AIRPORTS (either Extreme or Express) are listed. Rescanning or selecting Other does not solve this.
What is odd is (1) The AirPort menu still shows me connected to my AirPort network and indeed I still have Web access etc. and (2) If I launch AirPort Admin Utility from my MacBook Pro, it shows all the AirPorts correctly (so the problem seems limited to my G5 rather than the AirPort devices).
If I restart my Power Mac G5, the problem goes away and all works well again- for a day or so - and then it returns.
What can I do to permanently eliminate this annoying symptom?

1.) Since the Airport Express is extending the Extreme Network, will my whole network now be single radio only network, since the Express only has one radio?
Although, your AirPort Express is 802.11n, it is not simultaneous dual-band. That means it can either extend the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz radio but not both at the same time. So the AEBSn will still be broadcasting on both the 5 GHz (for 802.11a/n) and on 2.4 GHz (for 802.11b/g/n).
2.) What if both an 802.11g and 802.11n device connect to the Express' radio instead of the Extreme's for some reason, will this make both devices operate at 2.4GHz?
    Yes.
3.) What if an 802.11g device connects to the Airport Express' radio. Since this is now 2.4GHz, will it only now communicate with the Airport Extreme at 2.4GHz?
Assuming that you configured the AXn to extend the AEBSn's 2.4 GHz radio, it will only be able to communicate back to the AEBSn on its 2.4 GHz radio.

  • Airport Express over All Home Audio Tuner

I have an Airport Express hooked up to our all home tuner and trying to get the icon to show up in iTunes allowing me to choose between 'computer' and 'All Home Audio'. I have the green LED lit on the Airport Express, I have the right box checked to look for remote speakers, but can not get the icon to show up in iTunes. Any ideas?

    Duane,
Thanks for the reply. I beleive so.... I was in applications/utility/airport express setup and ran through the wizard there. however, it appeared as if the end result was to connect my airport card in the iMac to my home wireless network. I did not see set up information asking me to configure the remote device that is plugged into the tuner???

  • Guest network does not work when bridging airport express to extreme

    Hello everyone,
i just upgraded my airport extreme 5th gen and airport express (dual band) to 7.6.3 which is supposed to enable guest network extenstion..
my airport extreme is hardwired to airport express (set as bridged mode), eveything works fine with internet connectivity and roaming between the two since both are set with the same ssd name and wpa pass, i have enabled guest network on both to test the new update, which worked fine with airport extreme, then i went downstairs to test airport express guest network which didnt work.. i can see and join the network, IPs are set correctly exactly like airport extreme.
while testing airport express guest network i noticed that i can only browse google website or google search results, youtube website can be accessed too but it will not broadcast youtube videos.. any other website cannot be accessed thru airport express guest network..
since airport express guest network is providing a very limited access i tried enabling vpn on my iphone and managed to get full access with extremely slow speed.. can this be a bug on the firmware, did anyone find a solution???
    Thanks

AirPort Extreme is the main base station handlng DHCP and NAT for the network. Normally, I do not use the Guest Network feature of this dual band router, but decided to check out the new firmware.
The AirPort Express is normally connected back to the AirPort Extreme via a wired Ethernet connection so it functions as a separate access point in a roaming network configuration.
I tried out the Guest Network option in the new firmware on the AirPort Express and had no issues. Then, decided to try the Express out as a test connecting using wireless only. I moved it to a location that was about 30 feet and a few rooms away from the AirPort Extreme and enabled the Guest Function with no problems.
I would not expect your setup to work with the Guest Network features, since you do not have an Apple router installed and functioning as the main router for the network. That would be the device that "creates" the Guest Network and other AirPorts "extend" it using either an Ethernet or wireless connection.
Apple used VLAN for the Guest Network feature before and I assume that has been expanded somewhat with the new feature to extend the Guest Network option to other Apple routers on a network.
