Making Slideshows

On the old iMovie, you could put pictures to an audio recording from GarageBand and it would show up like a timeline, where you could easily change the pictures to match the audio so that you video makes sense. I am doing a documentary for history class and I have the new iLife. I know you can make and iPhoto slideshow that will do the same thing, but you have to sort of guess and check on the slide lengths. Does anyone know of a way to set in the same "timeline" format?

You can still useiMovie HD 6. It's been made available to those iLife 08 users since so many complained about the dumbing down of the new iMovie and eliminating much of the advanced functionality of iMovie 6. Download it and use it. Both iMovies can co-exist on your Mac.
With Quicktime Pro you can create a slideshow in iPHoto, export to QT, open it and the audio track you want to combine and copy and past the slideshow into the audio track (using QT Player) and have it scaled to match the audio. A perfect match. With multiple audio tracks to use iMovie HD 6 is better.

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Making slideshows with iPhoto6

I haven't upgraded since iPhoto 4 but am now interested in purchasing iLife 6. Has anyone had much experience making slideshows in iPhoto6 and then exporting them to iDVD 6? I'd like to know how smoothly this works before buying it, given some of the feedback I'm reading.
    thanks

I found the glitch in iPhoto.
If you have a managed library the sound comes out of the video clip during a slideshow.
If you have a referenced library the audio does not get copied over and so there is no sound on your soundclip when doing a slideshow.

  • IMovieHD or iMovie 08 for making slideshow to send to iDVD?

Is there any quality difference (in algorithms etc) when making a slideshow to send to iDVD?
I am making a short movie to burn to a DVD and really like the updated tools in iMovie 08 (easier Ken Burns in my opinion) but iMovie 08 can't really do chapters (and I NEED chapters). Can I make an "outline" of the iMovie in iMovie HD (with all the songs and chapters laid out) and then import it to iMovie 08 to do the slides? Will there be any difference in the final product, or is just the interface different (but the way a jpg is processed the same)?
Thanks in advance for any info.

Or you can also search this forum and look for Garage Band to create custom chapter markers within iLife'08.
You may want to consider using apple's free download of iM6 for this purpose also (much easier)......

The data rate is too high for DVD. You must replace the file with one of a lower rate.....ref, EPGC...." All pictures in slideshow "Lenas" are the same size, 2-2,5 MB, nothing special with the picture at 00:01:31:08. What does the info say?

What are the pixel x pixel dimensions of those still images?

    Is all you're software up-to-date?
At a guess, I suspect that the slideshow is endlessly looping, trying to find a second or subsequent pic. Afterall, a one shot slideshow is unusual. For that kind of slow pan you might have more luck with an app like PhotoToMovie. (http://www.lqgraphics.com).

  • Can you combine IDVD & IPhoto for making slideshow?

I have made a 45 min. slideshow on IPhoto with 600 pictures & 8 songs.  I would now like to make an introduction from IDVD and rolling credits at the end.  Is it possible to combine the IPhoto slideshow & the IDVD part to make one slideshow?  Is it best to export to ITunes or to desktop to burn the DVD?

Export the slideshow out of iPhoto as a QT movie file via the Export button in the lower toolbar.  For iPhoto 9.4.3 and earlier select Size = Medium or Large. For iPhoto 9.5 and later selct 480p.
Open iDVD, select a theme and drag the exported QT movie file into the open iDVD window being careful to avoid any drop zones.
Follow this workflow to help assure the best quality video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • Making Slideshow in iDVD vs. iMovie

I have built a substantial iPhoto Library and now want to create slideshows of all my albums (and ultimately burn to DVD)
With the iDVD vers. 6 it seems I can now import the photos and arrange them, add a transitions between slides and add title & subtitles to any slide I want. But, I have tripped over something maybe someone else has figured out... When I import the photos from iPhoto, once they get to iDVD they have been assigned a TITLE which is in fact the cryptic Name of the photo (eg/ IMG000457).
This title appears on all the slides (unless I turn off the setting) - but in fact I want only the Titles for the photos that I have added real text to.
(at one time, in my playing around... I DID add photos without the Name... and the Title field in iDVD came up with "Add title" and "Add Subtitle" so I just entered the text I wanted on a few slides... the rest were left with no text)
Part 2: Also, would you know what I am giving up by skipping the iMovie step and going right to iDVD with my photos? So far, I have noticed that I can only assign 1 type of transition to my slideshow for all slides... but that's the only limitation I have found.
Part 3: Is there any advantage to sending the slides from iPhoto to iDVD versus starting iDVD and importing the Photos from the Media pane?
Thanks for any insight you can give... there's too many ways to skin this cat!
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   iLife 6

However I did try what you suggested, and it still imported the filename into the title when dragged from the Media Pane.
You're right! I know that didn't happen in either 6.0.0 or 6.0.1... Must have been a bug they fixed???
Like explain how you got the menus & submenus in iDVD by just dragging in folders of pictures?
Notice that this was built in 2004 in iDVD 4? Behaved differently than iDVD 6. Now you have to use the Add Submenu or Add Slideshow "under" the + in the lower-left of iDVD. Once you have those added, you populate with your images.
You mentioned you put 800 photos on this DVD... is that the max number??
That's how many images I took on the trip. Used them all.
And 95 Slideshows... on ONE DVD? Wow...
That's a typo... Should be 95%. Good catch. There were about 30 slideshows (just found my layout sheet) and several short videos from the digicam.

  • Glitch with sound while making slideshows with videoclips?

Is anyone else having this problem?
I make a slideshow with photos and videoclips. I add music to the slideshow. The music plays, and when the video clip comes on the music softens. However, no sound is played from the video clip. I know this clip works, if I double-click on it it plays fine in Quicktime.
However, with certain other video clips, the sound from those plays fine. I've seen from these posts that a few others seem to think that clips from one camera might play sound, but not another. That does not make sense to me.
Does anyone have any bright ideas in solving my problem? Thanks!

I found the glitch in iPhoto.
If you have a managed library the sound comes out of the video clip during a slideshow.
If you have a referenced library the audio does not get copied over and so there is no sound on your soundclip when doing a slideshow.

  • Help making slideshow using iPhoto & iMovie

How can I make the photos in my iPhoto album remain in the same order when imported into iMovie?  I have created an album and a playslist of music.  When I bring the music into the project, only the first song shows up so it is impossible to add beat markers to the whole set.  Also every time I add the photo album the photos are out of order from how they are in the album in iPhoto.....how can I fix this?  There are 207 photos so adding them individually is not an option.

I wish I could help you. I have had good luck dragging in albums from iPhoto, and it will keep its order. However, if I drag an iPhoto Event, it will not keep its order.
For music, you need to drag one at a time. A playlist from iTunes will not work.

  • Crash When Making Slideshow

I am new to iMovie, but disappointed by my initial experience. I am trying to do a simple slide show -- 161 jpg photos, running for 3 seconds each, with simple dissolve transitions.
I get the photos in, and then select them all and select the "dissolve" transition to apply to all of them at once. The machine then works on it for a while, until suddenly iMovie just stops and I'm back on the desktop.
I don't get it. This is a brand new iMac, with the full 3GB of RAM, a 750 GB hard drive, and the slide show is only about 10 minutes long. If iMovie with this setup can't handle this task, how can it do anything?
    Suggestions?
Intel iMac Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    Hi P
My first thought. Is it possibly to apply a transition to several clips in one
    manouver ??
I only apply one at a time.
If it should be possibly then You might try:
No not knowing but just suggesting what to try till someone that knows
    and gives the correct answer.
    - Delet iMovie pref file:
    -->/Users/YourName**/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iMovie.plist
    and
    -->/Users/YourName**/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iMovie3.plist
    - Repair Permissions (Apple Disk Util tool)
    - Repair Hard disk (Apple Disk Util tool) - You need to start from CD/DVD or
    one external hard disk
    - Eventually: Start a new account - log into this and re-try.
    Other origins are version conflicts:
    OS X.3.9 + iMovie 5.0.2 + QT 6.5.2 = stable working environment (if possibly)
    OS X.4.9 + iMovie 6.0.3 + QT 7.1.5 = also OK
Just to start with till the real gurus hit the bulls eye.

  • How good is Elements 10 in making slideshows compared to, say, Pro Show Gold?

I have Photoshop CS4 and Premiere CS3 for photo and video creation, but was looking for a really good slide show program. Any thoughts? Someone recommended Elements 10. But internet sites don't even list it in their top 10.

No contest.  Proshow will win hands down.
It provides a complete start to finish solution in one package without having to dip into Premiere Elements, which I find buggy and not overly intuitive.  Premiere is more intended for video editing.
Proshow is far more feature rich and very easy to use.
Why not download the free trial and see for your self?

  • Making Photo Slideshows along with movies

Does FCE HD or FCP HD make good quality slideshows. iMovie seems to lose a lot of quality wihen making slideshows with photos. I am looking to make a DVD with movies as well as photos, and I am wondering what would app would give me the best quality.
    Macbook Pro

    I use Photo-to-Movie under http://www.lqgraphics.com/software/phototomovie.php
It makes better DV quality slideshows than iPhoto or iDVD (less shimmer and pixelation) and allows for very precise motion control of the "Ken Burns" effect. Then I import the finished "movie" to FCE and then export the movie to Livetype or Soundtrack to add titles or my own music.

  • Are making, editing, and sharing slideshows any easier with 11?

Are making, editing, and sharing slideshows any easier with 11?
I have 09 and a lot of people seem to prefer it to 11.
In 09 I gave up on trying to figure out making slideshows that fit the timing of a song and could then be sent to youtube.
I know it could be done but it wasn't easy like sending movies to youtube from imovie 09.

It's little changed. If you're timing cutting slideshows against a track in a precise way it will always require a timeline, so you will always be better off with a video editor.

Does anyone know if I can take the DVD that I made and put it in a web page?
or maybe use another program to convert it into a movie so that i can put it on the web.
I am looking for a program that can make a dvd and also put that same thing into a format that I can post it on the web. will iDVD do that for me.
    Thanks

I am a photographer and am looking for a simple way to make slideshows for my clients that won't take a ton of time
OK - that changes things. I use Extensis Portfolio to share images with customers. You can create a slideshow to put on a disc as well as web pages.
Check out http://www.extensis.com/en/products/assetmanagement/productinformation.jsp?id=prod60006 It may co$t a little more than you want.
You might also want to look at RapidWeaver from http://www.realmacsoftware.com/rapidweaver/ for creating web pages with slideshows and FotoMagico for making slideshows http://www.fotomagico.com/
Roxio's Toast Titanium 7 comes with a nice slideshow application for discs. http://www.roxio.com/enu/products/toast/titanium/overview.html
