Malformed PDF

Hello All,
We generate PDFs from .Net 2.0 executable using Crystal Reports DLLs version 10.5.3700. The documents come out of PDF version 1.2 and are viewable with most any Adobe Readers. However, once opened in Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Professional and attempted to save in any other format (doc in particular) the Acrobat throws an error: "Bad PDF; error in processing fonts: unsupported Type2 font". When the PDFs are fed into iText open source java libraries on Unix, the iText is unable to manipulate them due to PDF text positioning issues. Arial is the only font used on the reports however sometimes bold, sometimes italic. The font is clearly marked as embeddable and is present on every Win PC. The same issue exists with all Crystal generated PDFs in my organization regardless of the Crystal version (10.5, 10.2, or 9.5) and on every desktop regardless if Adobe is installed or not including the one where reports were designed. PDFs generated with Adobe Acrobat or other tools do not expose this problem. This makes us think that Crystal generates malformed PDFs that may not be 100% compatible with other software and tools other then Adobe Reader. Is there any sort of setting we can change or patch to apply to fix the issue?
Thank you.

Hi All,
This has been rejected and marked as an enhancement request:
Hi Don,
Product Management has done a full review of the PDF export code, and has determined that it is too large to fix in the current version.  A PDF file that can be converted to WORD needs follow more strict and specific standard.  At the same time, we never did any test on the conversion from PDF to WORD and the PDF exporter was never designed to support this before.  Besides the font embedding issue, there may be some other issues will make the conversion fail.  This FR is rejected on the basis that it is a limitation of our PDF exporting.
Thanks
Toby
So if there are numerous requests for this can someone create a new post and refer to this link. If we get enough requests we can possibly build a Business Case to get this sooner than later.
Thank you
Don

  • Malformed PDF generated from DocuMaker 11.0

    Hi
While Integrating DocuMaker generated PDF to an eSignature Vendor(whose input is a PDF), we found that PDFs created using DocuMaker is malformed/invalid. For example, paths are drawn using page description such as:

    2953 2550 l
    176 2550 l

    Q
which contradicts PDF spec. It should be:
    q
    176 2672 m
    2953 2672 l
    2953 2550 l
    176 2550 l

Question: Due to this issue the checkboxes and Grid-lines do not appear properly on screen. Please let us know if there is any setting in DocuMaker that needs to be adjusted to resolve this PDF formatting issue. We have also opened a ticket with Oracle (Opened Oracle ticket # SR3-2563186951, Severity 2 issue) but no luck yet.

    Hi,
I am not very sure if the issue seen with the checkboxes and Grid-lines is due to the standard specs you have mentioned. But I see one reference in the latest PDF Driver handbook under the Section "LIMITATIONS" which clearly says that:
"Although Acrobat Reader supports variable fields, radio buttons, push buttons, and list
boxes, the PDF Print Driver does not support the creation of these objects within a PDF
    file."
For your easy reference: PDF Handbook -> http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E16256_01/pdf_book.pdf
As mentioned, I am not sure if this applies to Checkboxes as well. I did not get a chance to explore much on this. Please explore further if it helps.
    Thank you.

  • Does anyone know why Reader X won't open secure .pdf, such as a downloaded manual?

I'm using Vista 64,and updated to Reader X.  It will open standard .pdf files, but secure ones (I downloaded manuals for my Canon digital camera software) not only will not open, but cause Reader X to stop responding.
My temporary solution:  delete X and reinstall 9.4.whatever.
What has happened to the infallibility of this software?

It could be that there is a problem with the pdf files. Each version of Acrobat and Reader are more intolerant to malformed pdfs as that is a vector for spyware and virii.

  • Is this PDF defective?

I have been encountering problems with the "Save as XPS/PDF..." add-in for Microsoft Office 2007. Since the update to Service Pack 3, Office has been producing PDFs that Adobe Reader/Acrobat Pro can't render correctly (before the update, there were no such problems). I have already started a thread about this at superuser.com. There the consensus was that Office does indeed produce a malformed PDF.
So far, so good - so I paid €299 plus taxes to open a support ticket at Microsoft. However, they say that since other PDF renderers like Foxit Reader or Chrome's internal PDF viewer can render the file correctly, the problem is not with Office but with Acrobat (so I guess they are trying to pass the buck to Adobe (and thereby avoid having to refund my support ticket fee which they would have to do if a bug in one of their products was the cause for it)).
My guess is that other PDF viewers are more lenient to errors in the file, just as good browsers ignore malformed HTML, but that Adobe's products (or GhostScript, for that matter, who claims that there is an error in an XREF header, whatever that is) are strict and refuse to render a defective file.
My problem now is: Can I prove that the file is in fact defective? If so, how?
You can find the PDF file here, and (if you want it) the original PowerPoint file here.
    Thank you very much,
    Tim Pietzcker

Yes the PDF is malformed. Adobe products are some of the most lenient in terms of 'bad grammar' within PDF files, but if faced with an outright error they will usually ignore that object. This can in turn cause other page elements to be hidden, e.g. where they depend on transparency information from the malformed object.
The specific error in this case is with the implementation of fill gradients on the orange shape which joins between the left pie chart and the middle pie chart. If Microsoft care, they've omitted one of the bounds values from the stitch function definition for the pattern axial fill. Deleting that shape from the PDF, everything else renders perfectly.
Obviously the best thing to do is use the Acrobat plugin to 'Save to Adobe PDF' rather than the Microsoft PDF/XPS addon (I've checked and Acrobat's plugin works fine with your PPTX file), but if you absolutely have to use the MS addon then give that shape a different style of gradient and try again.

  • Binding issues

    1. I am looking for a tool to convert XML to XSD for binding purposes?
    or
    2. What other ways are there to bind my XML file with my pdf document? When doing my binding using the Sample XML option, I get the following error when executing through the system "Only XDP data is supported with XFA forms". I converted my PDF file to a XDP file and tried executing it again but got " Operation aborted: malformed PDF or data" error.

    Hi,
    1) Reimporting model solves issues related to changes in structure --- which has been done by you already
    2) Restarting of J2EE engine solves issue of cache of previous model structure--- which has been done by you already
    3) Bapi may not be returing the values - which can be checked by settign External break point in Bapi--Please check this
    4) If Bapi is returning values, then carefully check mapping once again.

  • Malformed PO pdf filename

    Hi,
I have a situation where when we create and send POs by email some files do not contain the PO number in the file name as they should.
It appears to be random, but happens enough to be an issue.
It does not appear to be dependant on the vendor, sender, time of day or the way the wind is blowing.
The cover page text is also incorrect. Is the file name taken from the cover text? If so, when is the cover text created. Or is it only related because the same process is used to create both?
Has anyone else experienced this and/or know how to resolve this issue?

There may be possibility that it happens only in case of only amended PO. Please check and revert back.

  • Report service and pdf

    Dear friends,
I have a problem in 9iAS. I use Report service to run reports in IE. There are some chinese characters in the reports. While i set the target format to HTML, the output is OK, While the format is PDF, the chinese chartacters are malformed.
I search related documents in OTN, but found nothing. Who can give me some advices?
    Thanks.

    Hi Joi
The HTML output is working for you because your Browser is capable of displaying Chinese characters automatically (using document's encoding).
However, PDF requires that you specify Multibyte characters (such as Chinese) in a different manner. You need to use either PDF Multibyte font aliasing feature or PDF Font Subsetting feature if you want to display Chinese characters in PDF.
    See:
    http://otn.oracle.com/products/reports/htdocs/getstart/whitepapers/pdfenh.htm
for more information on how to use this feature.

  • Some PDF attachments are corrupted when emailed using javamail

I have a java class that takes a file name, 'To' email, and 'From' email as parameters, and then emails the named file to the specified address as a Multipart email.
The problem that I am facing is that sometimes the PDF cannot be opened when it arrives because it is corrupt. I know that prior to sending, the PDF opens without issue, so the problem is in the code somewhere.
There are a couple of oddities here:
    1) PDFs that get corrupted and PDFs that do not get corrupted are generated from the same source (Oracle Report), so I believe that rules out a problem with malformed emails?
    2) If I compare the PDF before it gets sent to the PDF that arrives in my inbox using a hex editor (XVI32), the files are identical except that an extra character is getting added to the corrupt PDFs at the end of each line - hex '0A', which corresponds to ASCII linefeed. This indicates to me that maybe there is a problem with the way that the file is getting encoded when it is read. If I remove all of the 0A characters, the file opens correctly.
I believe that the code I am using is set up correctly, as I have looked at countless examples of this online to try to find my problem. Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction. Code is included below.

Normally pdf files are text, with any binary data represented as encoded text. If your pdf files
include raw binary data, JavaMail can be confused. JavaMail will try to guess what encoding
is appropriate for your data. If the data is mostly text, JavaMail will use quoted-printable encoding,
and will canonicalize the text lines to end with CRLF (0x0D, 0x0A). A 0x0D in the binary will look
like an end of line and will turn into 0x0D, 0x0A.
You can force JavaMail to use base64 encoding for your data, which will preserve the binary
    data exactly, by using
    attachFilePart.setHeader("Content-Transfer-Encoding", "base64");
after setting the content for the part.
Alternatively, you could figure out how to generate pdf files that don't include raw binary data.

    Can anyone shed some light?

I'm not familiar with PDF at all -- I've tried two different Perl packages: PDF::API2 and CAM::PDF. These have always worked great, but are choking on files from Acrobat 9 due to "malformed xref."
Here are the 2 files (same file, saved in different Acrobat versions):
    http://www.danrichman.com/wwrea.pdf
    http://www.danrichman.com/wwrea_v8.pdf
If you look at the raw files, that xref table is near the top of the "v8" file but nonexistent in the v9 file. I'm guessing this is what the Perl readers don't like.

  • I cannot open a pdf, maybe because it was created on a Mac

I received a pdf file which is supposed to contain a photo. However when I try to open it on my windows computer wth Adobe I see only 33 pages of numbers and letters. Meanwhile I played a bit with it and found this: <pdf:Producer>Mac OS X 10.9.3 Quartz PDFContext<
Anyone an idea what it means and how to open the file on windows?

Acrobat should of course also be able to open the PDF, unless it's malformed or corrupted.
How did you receive that PDF - via email?  Email can corrupt any attachments.
A safer way to transfer e-documents is to use a file sharing service such as Files at Acrobat.com, Dropbox, Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive, ..., then share the uploaded file with the recipient.

  • Malformed topic error - RoboHelp 9

    Hi,
After checking out every suggestion on dealing with this error with no luck (including Peter Grainge's print issues and every other posting on malformed topics), I am at a loss - any help/suggestions on a solution would be GREATLY appreciated.
I have three single source print layouts in my project - Administration Guide, Operations Guide, and Reference Guide.  A few of the topics are common to several of these layouts.  WebHelp compiles perfectly along with all three different TOCs.
The Administration Guide generates a printed document, which needs the usual formatting in Word, but all the topics generate.  When I attempt to generate either the Operations or Reference Guide I get the malformed topic error message after about 10 topics - not always on the same topic.  Here's the puzzling thing to me - the topics that hang are topics that generated just fine in the Administration Guide.  Is this perhaps something to with my conditional build tags and the same topics being used for multiple layouts?
    Print Wizard settings:
    Generate Word doc only.
Location -different folder for each single sourced print Guide
    Conditional Build Expression = None
I have tried using the Microsoft Word Template styles and the Stylesheet - default.css in turn with the same result.
I have been scouring the html code for weird leftovers from cutting and pasting topics from a previous Word doc (This project originated in Doc-To-Help, but as I had not created online Help previously, just a pdf output, I started a new project in RoboHelp and created each topic from scratch, but did cut and paste text from the Word doc.  I thought perhaps there might be an issue with Word tables which are plentiful in this project, but the error starts with topics that have no tables in them.
    Any suggestions, thoughts VERY WELCOME
    Many thanks in advance,
    Sally

I encountered a Malformed Topic error message that I eventually resolved after trying many of the suggested resolutions.
Here's what I tried that did not resolve the problem:
Cleaned-up the HTML generated by the MS Word document <Word 2007>
Ensured my topic/filenames weren't too long
    Removed tables
    Eliminated all Conditional Build Tags
    Deleted the 'offending' document
Confirmed Memory requirements/capacity (on my machine)
    This did resolve the problem:
Resolved by reducing the size of large file(s) - (by breaking-up one large document into many documents)
Also of interest, the large document did contain many tables, which probably aggravated the condition (malformed topic)
    The environment
    I use RoboHelp Version 9.0.2
    On a network
    Also have a Local copy
    Use Visual Source Safe
    Have 351 Topics
    Printed doc approx. 850 pages
Source docs are MS Word 2007
Use RH Style Sheet and applicable Word settings
I hope this info will help you determine which resolution is right for your situation!
