Manage Wireless Users

Not sure if this in in the right place, but I work in a school, and up until now we have been using open directory and network homes to manage users. As we have been getting laptops for kids with special needs, we have been increasing our number of wireless users. I understand that network home folders work for wireless, but I found it is quite slow. I havn't messed around too much with mobile accounts, but I am currently looking at that for my mac laptops. My question is, is there anyway with Tiger server that I can make users autheniticate before they are allowed on the network? I don't need to manage the PC laptops (or the mac laptops for that matter) I just need to authenticate them so that not everybody has access.
Thanks

Various WiFi devices can use IEEE 802.1x or RADIUS authentication as part of (dis)allowing a user access to a wireless network, and Mac OS X Server can field and can respond to those access requests via Open DIrectory.
Check your particular WiFi router(s) for details and options and features.
The Apple WiFi devices I've worked with have options here.
If your devices do not offer authentication support, either consider an upgrade or check to see if they offer Access Point (AP) features or some other authentication mechanism, and report back here.
Tossing large wads of (disk) data around can be rather bandwidth-intensive, and that usually means upgrades to 802.11n 5 GHz dual-slot, or more WiFi sites and faster back-haul links from those, or distributing the files outwards into the targets or into local caches. The approach toward resolving bandwidth issues usually starts with calculating how much bandwidth you're using and that you expect to need, and working through your configuration to identify bottlenecks (eg: 100 Mb LAN segments, overloaded NICs) and removing or augmenting those connections. Toward identifying and removing the bottlenecks. Or toward lowering loads. Or spreading and smoothing out the peak load. Or a combination of these.

  • Manage multiple users backups

Hi, I try to explain my situation and all my troubles with Time Capsules.
Here @ work we have around 20 apple computers all running latest OSX 10.8.2 and I use 3 different 2TB Time Capsule to store and balance users backups.
During last 3 years some user is gone, some new arrived so Time Capsules are still storing unused and unuseful backups.
Moreover we changed computer and users would like to start brand new backup.
Is there a way to manage different users backup? I really need to delete some old Backups.backupdb folder.
If I try to access the time machine from my MBP I just can see of course my folder.
Is there out there some administrative tool to manage what stored in my Time Capsules?
I expected from Apple to have more controls on "Utility AirPort" application, but the only thing I can do on my TC disk in to initialize it... we cannot just initialize a disc every time we need to mange it.
    Any solution?

There are plenty of third party software..
CCC, superduper and chronosync.. being the most often quoted.. I use TM to a non apple NAS and occaionally free superduper to make a disk image.
Apple made the TC very difficult to use as you seem to want to use it.. in that, you cannot properly partition it. You can create disk images.. see
    http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
Q3 he goes through setting up disk images.
If you create a disk image for each Mac, then it makes it fairly easy to delete and recreate an image when you need to. Although you are now going to use the space somewhat less efficiently in that disk images will be of fixed size. I think this is not really as big an issue as it might seem as TM handles multiple computers connecting to the TC very poorly.
I am rather more a hands on person.. I would pull the hard disk out of the TC and parition it properly on a Mac.. and put it back in the TC.. this voids the warranty of course. Which is what makes the TC so useless.. it is a sealed device.. there is no other NAS which seals you out of the hard drive to fix, format, replace, repair.
You can hang multiple hard disks onto a TC via USB.. that will work for wireless but is extremely slow for ethernet.. and certainly USB disks are not without issues.. and latest Mac OS has been making a mess of reliable connection to them..
Otherwise a Synology or QNAP NAS.. Setup different user login for each user.. then use TM or one of the alternatives.

  • Getting Wireless Users onto LAN

    Hello All,
We currently purchased 2 AP's and a 2106 WLC and I am having some trouble getting the wireless users to communicate to the network on the other side of the WLC. Here is a very simple diagram on how this is all connected.
    3750X L3 Switch --> 2106 WLC --> AP
    LAN Network - 10.10.0.0/16           Wireless Users Network - 10.100.21.0/24
So with a laptop, I can get a DHCP reservation from the WLC to the 10.100.21.0/24 network. From there though, I cannot ping anything in the 10.10.0.0/16 network. I know that I am talking across two different networks so by default they shouldnt be able to communicate, but I feel like I am missing a setting on the WLC that will allow the two networks to communicate.
    Management Interface:
    IP Address: 10.10.20.100
    Netmask: 255.255.0.0
    Gateway: 10.10.0.1
    DHCP Info: 10.10.20.100
Here is the config for my test interface (which may be the problem):
    IP Address: 10.100.21.2
    Netmask: 255.255.255.0
    Gateway: 10.100.21.1
    DHCP Info: 10.10.20.100
Thanks in advance for taking a look.

    Hello George,
Thanks for the reply. I believe I have routes that allow both these networks to talk, currently we are redesigning our network so bear with me as the setup is a little goofy.
The way our devices are connected in terms of the wireless configuration:
    Internet <-> ASA <-> 3750 switch <-> WLC <-> AP <-> Laptop
                                          |
                                      My PC
So, currently our default gateway for our LAN (10.10.0.1) is the inside interface of the ASA (like i said, working on changing this). On the ASA I also have a static route configured so any traffic destined for 10.100.21.0/24 send to 10.10.20.2 which is our 3750 Switch.
On the 3750 switch I set a default gateway for our wireless network of 10.100.21.1. I also configured the trunk from the post above so there is a trunk between the 3750 and the WLC allowing the LAN VLAN and Wireless VLAN to send data across it.
On our WLC I have this configured:
    Management Interface:
    IP Address: 10.10.20.100
    Netmask: 255.255.0.0
    Gateway: 10.10.0.1
    DHCP Info: 10.10.20.100
Here is the config for my test interface (which may be the problem):
    IP Address: 10.100.21.2
    Netmask: 255.255.255.0
    Gateway: 10.100.21.1
    DHCP Info: 10.10.20.100
From my LAN I can ping 10.100.21.1
Our host on the wireless can get an IP, but when it attempts to ping anything (even its gateway) i get no replies.
Going back to your question of if we have routes for both networks to talk, I believe we do, unless I am missing something.
Thanks again for your reply and taking the time to look at this.

  • Problem authenticating Wireless users with peap

    Good afternoon,
I am currently trying to authenticate wireless users using PEAP and an external RADIUS server. The problem is when I try to authenticate I get this error :
AAA/AUTHEN/PPP : Pick method list 'Permanent Local'
    DOT11-7-AUTH_FAILED : Station ... Authentication failed
It shouldn't use local authentication, but the aaa server I configured.
I looked on the internet but didn't find a working solution.
Does anyone know why it is not working ?

I haven't setup autonomous APs before but I think I might see the problem. You are defining an authentication list called "eap_methods" but you never call for it in your SSID settings. Instead there you call a list named "eap_list" In addition, I think you might be missing one more command. So perhaps try this:
    dot11 ssid test
    authentication open eap eap_methods
    authentication network-eap eap_methods
    authentication key-management wpa version 2
    guest-mode
    Hope this helps!

To enforce posture assement on wireless users i just have to change the switch port access vlan to authentication vlan where the Access point is connected  at present and change the SSID vlan 10 to authentication vlan. As i m using only 1 vlan so i don't have to create a trunk port on switch where the Access point is connected ?? Nothing else i have to do ?? Correct me if i m wrong
    Answers ???????

Thank you for all the details.
As some further details, the CAS should be configured with the following:
    1. Under the managed subnets, you should add an IP address (not used anywhere else) in the trusted vlan 10 subnet and link it to the untrusted vlan 20.
    2. Under the vlan mappings, it's OK to have the untrusted vlan 20 mapped to the trusted vlan 10. So the vlan mapping should be:
    20 (untrusted) ---> 10 (trusted)
Wireless users should be connecting on vlan 20 and they should get an IP in trusted vlan 10's subnet.
All the traffic should then flow through the CAS, which will take care of mapping vlan 20 to vlan 10 once the user is authenticated and certified.
AD SSO for wireless users should also be possible.
The AD SSO authentication through NAC regards only the authentication process through the NAC agent.
As long as the rest of the configuration is correct, this should also be possible for wireless users.
    Regards,
    Fede

  • NAC IB with wireless users

I have a problem here guys, I will deploy cisco NAC with wireless users
My scenario is IB-VG , the access points are autonomous there is no WLC
the AP is connected to the switch on a trunk port and I have configured the AP
with different SSIDs each one with different vlan (s) on the NAC i have
configured the vlan mapping and the managed subnets but it doesn't work.
i wanna know where is the problem or is there anu configuration example to configure \
autonomous AP in In-Band virtual gateway mode

    Hi,
Can you please be more specific about what does not work?
What were you expecting to see and what are you seeing?
Do the wireless users get IP address?
If, yes, are they getting the IP you would expect?
After getting IP address, if you open a web browser dod you get redirected to the NAC login page?
If yes, do you enter the credentials and fail autentication?
Please note that you will need to make sure that the VLAN on the clients is allowed on the untrusted interface of the CAS, and that the VLAN mapping maps this VLAN to a vlan where a DHCP server can be reachable.
Also, please make sure that the traffic on the VLAn configured on the SSID has the only path as the path going through the CAS.
    HTH,
    Tiago

  • Wireless User Tracking

    LMS 3.2 (W2003).
No idea about WLSE, WLC or AP's, sorry :-(
We have done a discovery, ignoring AP. They say that MAC's from wireless clients are seen from switches as a hub or switch no Cisco, and they want to see it as a UT, with their IP and MAc address from AP, is that right???
I don't know if the resolution is possible because of no idea about AP...

If you have standalone APs, then you can enable wireless user tracking directly from the APs under Campus Manager > Admin > User Tracking > Acquisition. This is enabled by default. If you have a WLSE, you can disable direct acquisition from APs, then make sure your WLSEs are in DCR with correct HTTP credentials, and Campus will automatically synchronize those users.
If, however, you are using WLC/WCS with LWAPPs, then LMS management will not be possible. Those wireless users will show up, but they will show up as being connected to the wired switch to which the LWAPPs connect (unless trunking is used, then they may not show up at all).

  • Initiall SharePoint Server 2013 setup -- unable to manage new User Profile Service Application

During initial farm setup, creating an initial User Profile Service Application works fine.  However, once it's created, I cannot 'manage' it through the Manage Service Applications page in central
    admin.
I get a generic error (Sorry, something went wrong / unexpected error) with a correlation ID that doesn't seem to match any ULS log entries. (Yes, I merged logs from all machines in the farm.)
A Windows event log entry says:
A failure was reported when trying to invoke a service application: Endpoint Failure
Also frequent errors in ULS logs:  (see below)
    UserProfileApplicationNotAvailableException
User Profile Application      Proxy failed to retrieve partitions from User Profile Application: Micro…
    SPDistributedCache DataCacheException
I did notice that the file 'ProfileService.svc does not exist in SharePoint's web services app at the URL you see in the error. (below)
I also found it interesting that the event log error shows 1 active endpoint and 3 failed endpoints.  I have 2 WFEs and 2 app servers.  But I'm only trying to get the user profile service app running on the application
servers.  I have deleted and recreated this service app several times under various names (deleted/recreated its app pool as well) and wonder if these other failed endpoints could be orphans from previous instances...
Any thoughts on how I might successfully create this service application?  I've already been Binging my head against a wall long enough that I would have been better off reinstalling the entire farm...  I may still
    do that.
FYI, my farm came from a slipstreamed SP1 install package, and received the July CU after several other things were already configured, including the already-failed UP service application.

Thanks for the suggestion.  I performed the service restarts, and then an iisreset an the two web servers, and the application server that does not run the services.  Finally, I ran iisreset on the application server that does run the services.

  • How do i manage multiple users and devices with one apple id without everything showing up on every device?

how do i manage multiple users and devices with one apple id without everything showing up on every device?

How to use multiple iPhone, iPad, or iPod devices with one computer

  • How can I Manage Multiple Users?

My wife and I both want to organize and edit our digital photos with PSE10.  Up until now, I have managed all of our photos by myself, and I have synchronized all data on both of our computers (and backed up all of our data to an external harddrive).  Now that my wife also wants to organize and edit our photos on her computer, I am finding it difficult to synchronize the PSE Catalogs and photos on our two computers.  So, I am looking for a better procedure.
Should I (and can I) keep my PSE Catalog & Photos on:
    (1) an External Harddrive (which would be connected to only one computer at a time, while that computer user is organizing and editing photos), or
    (2) on a Home Network location where both users could access the photos for organizing and editing (with a "lockout" for photos which are being edited by the other computer user)?
Are there other good or better procedures for managing multiple users of PSE?
My computer is running Win7 Home Premium 64-bit.
My wife's computer is running Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit.

Thank all of you for your replies.
    Re SOFTWARE CHOICES:
I decided that my wife and I will each use different software on our different computers.
I decided NOT to upgrade my wife's software from "Windows Live Photo Gallery" (WLPG) to "Adobe Photoshop Elements 10" (PSE).  After a detailed discussion of my wife's wishes, I discovered that she only wants to (1) move our pictures into folders, (2) cull the pix, and (3) create "Album" folders (with only our most memorable pix) to be printed as 8.5" x 11" pages for the Albums.  She wants me to crop, edit, add captions, and print the Album pages.  See the image at the bottom for our current Photo Mgmt Plan.
I will continue to use "Lightroom" (Lr).
    Re SYCHRONIZATION:
I decided that we both can use the same picture files.  I use "GoodSync" to sychronize files between my computer and my wife's computer (and between my computer and my backup HDD).
My wife's "WLPG" does NOT appear to use a database.  My changes (including "Keyword" edits or adds) show up in her "WLPG" program, when picture files have been changed by myself in "Lr" and sychronized with her computer.
After my wife adds folders and/or changes the folder contents, I sync her computer with mine.  I open her folders (which are now also on my computer) in "Lr", and "Import" any of her new and duplicate pictures into "Lr".  Surpisingly and thankfully, the pictures that have been moved to a new folder by my wife do NOT show up in "Lr" in the previous folder (i.e. I do NOT have to find and delete any "Missing" images which were in the previous folder location).
Re MULTIPLE USERS OF A DATABASE:
I do not need to use this now, but I read that "Lr" is designed to work with the "Lr" database (and pictures) on an external HDD.
Thank all of you again for your very helpful replies.

  • Are There Any Good Windows Store Apps For Managing AD Users?

I'm thinking of buying the $79 HP Stream 7 tablets (1GB RAM 16GB storage) and using them as pocket computers to manage AD users while walking about.
We could simply run Remote Desktop to access our workstations and use RSAT tools, but it would be nicer if there was a touch friendly interface we could use on a 7 inch screen to easily do tasks such unlock and reset user passwords without dealing with remote
controlling another PC through the tiny desktop UI.

    > Very sad and embarassing for Microsoft that they don't have any touch
    > based RSAT tools and third party developers don't bother to make them
    > either.
Move from OnPremise to O365 and you will have an admin app at hand... I
cannot imagine what administrative tasks in active directory I would
need to be able to execute on a mobile device...

  • Reauthencation of Wireless User does not get prompt

    Hi Sir,
I set up a Radius server(Cisco ACS) to authenticate wireless users via 802.1x. The EAP protocol deployed is Microsoft PEAP as most of the clients OS is XP. The users might be sharing the same laptops. When a user select the wireless network to connect to, he was prompted a window for him to enter the Username, Password and Domain field. After successful authentication, he was able to access the network resources.
However, the user is not prompted the Username, Password and Domain after he has done so the first time. I understand that XP cached the user credentials in the registry. But my customer would like the window prompt to appear when the following scenario happens to reauthenticate
    a) Session timeout (Notice options in Group profile in ACS but didnt seem to work). What is this session timeout in ACS?
    b) Idle timeout to reauthenticate the current wireless user as the user might leave his workspace for a short period of time and someone might have use his credential to access the network illegitimately
    c) When he shuts down the PC and the laptop is passed to another user but the previous user credential is used rather than the second user credentioal is used.
How can I disable the automatic cached user credentials? Is there a way to prompt the user after a period of time for him to enter Username, Password and Domain field again? Is the option available in the XP client? I search through the AP configuration options but found none.
    Please advise. Thank you
    Delon

Dear All, My wireless users are loosing the internet(http and https) connection many times per day. I just check the ports configuration in the switch, but The problem persist. The device is a Cisco Aironet 1130 AG.
You are barking the wrong tree.
    Can you please elaborate further?
I need to determine whether the clients are loosing WIRELESS connection or loosing WAN connection.  Two different things, two different directions to choose from.
The easiest way to determine is this:
Presume you have 10 clients and half the clients are associated to one WAP and the other to the other WAP.  Your description states that all 10 clients would loose internet connectivity.  Is this correct?  If this is so, then we start with your switch and your WAPs.  How are the WAPs powered?  PoE or power injector?  Can you console into the WAPs?  Can you post the output to the commands "sh version" and "sh logs"?  How about the switch?  Can you console into the switch?  Can you post the output to the commands "sh version" and "sh logs"?

There are two router EA6400 (firmware version: 1.1.40.160989). Routers are configured in bridge mode. Routers are used for wireless devices/users. Wireless users have many problems with the quality of the connection and very high ping. Wired users don't have any problems with the quality of the connection and ping.

What is the wireless channel set for your router? Flash the firmware of your router, reset and reconfigure it. Try playing around with channels 1,3,6 or 9. Security mode should be set to WPA2 Personal. Let me know how it goes.
Forgot to say that I only use 2GHz wireless network. A fifth channel to another 12th channel. Channels I specifically chose not to overlap with neighboring networks. I've already tried to reset the settings on the defaul and reconfigure the router again. I only use WPA2 PSK-CCMP. Have any ideas?

EA6400 works really good for me with the current firmware.  On 2.4ghz, channel 9 is solid and at 5.0ghz, channel 157 is strong too.  Try that.

Your WiFi network is possibly prone to wireless interference which causes high latency and slow/intermittent connection. Adjust the wireless settings on your EA6400 routers. Use Non-overlapping Channels like 1 or 6 or 11. Use a WiFi scanner to check which Channels are crowded and which ones are not. Although 5GHz network uses non-overlapping Channels I recommend using Channel 161.
I advance it all already made. Have any ideas?

  • ERROR VIRSA CC 5.2 - Management View -User Analisys - NOT UPDATED!!!!!

    Hi ,
i executed the JOB of SYNK of users,  the Job of RISK analysis and the JOB of update of management Report .
When i go in - Management View - User Analisys -( i select date , System , User Group ) Virsa CC shows me the correct number of users actually in the system, for this user group , according to USR02 SAP table , BUT Users with NO Violations and Users With Violations are not correct.
    I show results:
No. of Users Analyzed : 25                CORRECT
Users with no Violations : 95 379%     NOT CORRECT
Users with Violations : -70 -279%        NOT CORRECT
The Interactive pie chart shows the correct number of users with violations : 2
    Who it' s possible ?
    BEST REGARDS
    Maurizio

    Abdul,
You stated in your initial comment that the Management Report check box was NOT selected? If this is the case then the graphs on the informer tab have not been updated. You must first execute the SOD (user/role/profile) analysis, once that job is complete then execute a separate job for the management reports. This will then update the informer tab (given that your rule set has been updated with your custom functions and risks).
