Managing files and vaults

Im in real trouble understanding this. I have a mac pro with 2 internal drives and 1 external. I want to have my entire managed files in the apperature library with 2 vaults. 1 on the extra internal drive and 1 on the external. My problem is when I import a raw file (I only shoot RAW) into apperature a project is created and a badge is created saying that the file(s) are referenced. The meta data shows the master being in the project so Im confused. Im also freaked out because I understand that the vaults do not retain referenced images. Is there a way to view the contents of a vault without doing a library restore? How can one be comfortable with these vaults if you cant view them. If I double click it apperature opens but its my regular library. So what I have done is selected every file 7k+ and consolidated the masters (copy) and then updated the vault which took a while so that kind of confirms my fear. The badges went away. any thoughts or a better way?

It sounds as though you're missing the option, in the Import pane, to move the images into the Aperture library. That will make them "managed," which will mean they're including in the Vault. If you leave them "referenced" they're not in the Vault and Aperture won't do anything at all about backing them up -- that will be up to you.
If your images are all referenced (they don't all have to be one or the other), what Aperture puts in the Vault is all the work you do on the images, in Aperture -- a set of recipes for how to process the images for display etc, not the images themselves.
All this is covered in the manual and, better, on Bagelturf:
http://homepage.mac.com/bagelturf/aparticles/ref/ref.html
for example.

  • Managing Files and Duplicates

    i'm new to iphoto and made the mistake of not unchecking the "make duplicate" preference when i imported my photos from folders on my hard drive. that means i now have a lot of duplicates to clean up, with photos taking up twice as much HD space as they need to.
    after doing some research it seems that many people advise that you should store and manage originals yourself rather than letting iphoto do it and risk possible corruption. is this correct ?
    in this case, presumably i should trash and empty trash in iphoto for all the photos i've already imported - an action that presumably will not affect the original copies stored in other files on my HD - and then re-import them into iphoto without making duplicates.
    does this all make sense as a sensible way to proceed ?
    thanks !

    Mark
    It's helpful to distinguish between the photos and the files that contain them. The Finder is a file manager, iPhoto is a photo manager.
    When you use iPhoto it's your Photo Manager - that is, it's your first point of interaction with your pictures. In this it replaces the Finder so, if you use iPhoto this
    if i then have all my images imported into iphoto that whenever i alter one - in photoshop for example - do i have to do this via iphoto rather than just opening the image in photoshop from the folder ?
    happens whether on not iPhoto manages the files, because iPhoto manages the photos. If you prefer to manage the files, if you don't distinguish between files and the photos they contain, then, simply, don't use iPhoto.
    You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
    When you import a pic into iPhoto the app copies the pic into the Library and then makes a thumbnail of it. If you subsequently edit the pic then there is a Modified version too. So iPhoto can have up to three versions (not copies) of the photo.
    It is strongly advised that you do not move, change or in anyway alter things in the iPhoto Library Folder as this can cause the application to fail and even lead to data loss
    FYI There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
    For 10.5 users: You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
    To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
    This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. If you're using Gmail you can use THIS
    If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto. With 10.5 you can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
    If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
    Or, if you want to access the files with iPhoto not running, then create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use THIS
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • I can't manage file and storage services in server manager.

    I have a windows 2012 R2 server. I had turned on the file and storage services role and was able to configure a single share in server manager. A few days later I wanted to create another share but when I select file and storage services within server manager
    I get the message at the top that says The server has not been queried for data since it appeared offline. Also there are no shares listed. Even though the shared folder that I already created is available from other computers.
    If I try to create a file share anyway I am asked to choose a server to create the share on and the server appears in the list with a status of offline.
    Now this may seem like an obvious connection issue however, I am trying to configure the server locally, not over the network. I can manage other services in server manager just fine. I have WDS and WSUS roles installed and can be configured with server
    manager just fine. I only have a problem with file and storage services.
    There are no errors in the event log.
    I tried to remove the file and storage services role from the server but as soon as I uncheck the box for file and storage services I get a pop up windows that says:
    The validation process found problems on the server from which you want to remove features. The selected features cannot be removed from the selected server. click ok to select different featres.
    I lists validation results that simply state the name of the server and says "storage services cannot be removed."
    How can I get file and storage services working again?

    Hi,
    How many servers are there in the list? If the offline serve is a remote server, please reboot the remote server to see the result. In the meantime, please new a shared folded on the local server in Windows Explorer to see if the issue still exists.
    Please refer to the article below to share a folder with server manager.

  • Managing files and directories

    I have a palm tx and am lost on how to transfer files back and forth between pc and palm. The syncing process seems to work for the applications but I would like to select files and transfer them to the palm and be able to create directories and manipulate files on the palm. How is this done?
    Post relates to: Palm TX

    johhfin wrote:
    I am trying to install doom(game) to the palm. The instructions are below and mention to bring a file or two over using hotsync. Seems that hotsync on my palm is automated, ie when I push the button on the usb is just downloads preset items. Is there a way I can hotsync just one file to a certain location?
    1/ install zdoomz.prc to your device
    2/ at first launch, it will create the needed directory (/PALM/Programs/ZDoomZ) & register
    the .zdk extension for itself.
    The link between .zdk files & /PALM/Programs/ZDoomZ is LOST after each reset & if another
    software register it -zquake, zhexen, ...-
    Run the launcher each time before a hotsync of a zdk file to be sure it goes in the right folder
    3/ copy "zdoomz.zdk" in the previous folder /PALM/Programs/ZDoomZ, or hotsync it.
    4/ copy your WAD file in the /PALM/Programs/ZDoomZ
     using either a smart card reader or the "mp3" trick => check http://www.zodiacgamer.com
     forum for more details.
    5/ if you want sound, install the gus patches in /PALM/Programs/Timidity
     The instructions are pretty clear (to me), but I question #3 about HotSyncing the .zdk file.  Just copy it as instructed.  The only file going to RAM is the .prc file, all the rest go to the SD card.
    I would HotSync the zdoomz.prc file only (to the device), then after it creates all the folders mentioned (on the SD card) use a cheap card reader to install all the other files directly to your SD card. (Remove it from the TX)  Once reinserted, run the ZDoomZ program file.
    Now whether you can get a decent copy of Doom to run on a Palm device is another story... Are you putting this on a Zodiac or your TX?

  • Using Applescript and Automator to manage files and folders

    Hi all.
    I need to make a simple action via applescript and-or automator to take the file it's been applied to (via the services) create a folder around it with the same name as the file.
    So far, I've searched the web, found some solutions but none are really working.
    Here's the script I found :
    set myFolder to findFolder()
    tell application "Finder" to set myFiles to files of myFolder as alias list
    repeat with aFile in myFiles
      set bName to my baseName(aFile)
      tell application "Finder"
      set folderExists to exists folder bName of myFolder
      if not folderExists then make new folder at myFolder with properties {name:bName}
      move aFile to folder bName of myFolder
      end tell
    end repeat
    ---------------- HANDLERS ----------------
    on baseName(myFile)
      tell application "System Events" to set {fileName, fileExt} to {name, name extension} of myFile
      return text 1 thru ((get offset of "." & fileExt in fileName) - 1) of fileName
    end baseName
    on findFolder()
      activate application "SystemUIServer"
      -- Bug pointed out by Lauri Ranta http://www.openradar.me/9406282
      tell application "Finder"
      activate
      set mySelection to (get selection)
      if mySelection ≠ {} then
      set mySelection to first item of (get selection)
      if mySelection's class = folder then
      set currentFolder to mySelection
      else if mySelection's class = document file then
      set currentFolder to parent of mySelection
      else if mySelection's class = alias file then
      set currentFolder to original item of mySelection
      end if
      else
      set currentFolder to target of front Finder window
      end if
      end tell
      return (currentFolder as alias)
    end findFolder
    And here's a page where they explain how to use automator and the Services to do what I <allmost> want, with some adaptation.
    But it still doesn't work.
    http://hbase.net/2011/08/17/move-selected-files-into-a-new-folder-using-applescr ipt-and-automator/
    So if anybody has an idea n how I could do this ?
    It It could either be a folder action (I drag and drop the files into a folder and boom, they get their folder around them)that I would set on a folder on a network drive, or locally, it doesn't matter, or a service (right clic on the file and boom folder around it.
    So if anyone could help with this I'd be grateful...

    Hi,
    Make an Automator Service (Service receives selected "Files or Folders"  in the "Finder.app").
    Use this script in the "Run AppleScript" action:
    on run {input, parameters}
        tell application "Finder"
            repeat with aFile in input
                if class of (item aFile) is not folder then
                    set {tName, fileExt} to {name, name extension} of aFile
                    if fileExt is not missing value and fileExt is not "" then
                        set tName to text 1 thru -((count fileExt) + 2) of tName
                        tell (get container of aFile)
                            if not (exists folder tName) then make new folder at it with properties {name:tName}
                            move aFile to folder tName
                        end tell
                    end if
                end if
            end repeat
        end tell
    end run
    This script work on files with a name extension.

  • Managing files and space in storage repositories

    What options are available for moving virtual machine images and resources between storage repositories in OVM 2.2? The documentation does not seem to mention this at all.
    As the root repository is nearly full, I have added a second repository. I expect there is little automation here so that I also need to manually move some disk images from the root repo to the new auxiliary repository.
    Is there a special procedure I need to be aware of, or can I simply shut down a VM, move the folder and start the VM?
    Can multiple disk images belonging to the same VM be distributed across multiple repositories, or must they all reside in the same folder?
    Thanks,
    Roy

    1. Shutdown the VM
    2. Unregister the VM from Oracle VM Manager (but DON'T delete the files)
    3. Manually move the VM directory from one running_pool folder to another.
    4. Discover the VM in Oracle VM Manager
    5. Start the VM
    Can multiple disk images belonging to the same VM be distributed across multiple repositories, or must they all reside in the same folder?Oracle VM Manager will only create disk images in the same folder as vm.cfg. Shared disks will be created in the repository that has the most amount of free space available. You can use this to your advantage by creating/discovering shared disks in any repository and attaching them to your guest. Just remember not to attach the same shared disk to multiple guests!

  • Managing Files and Folders in Lightroom - Mac

    I created a subfolder by mistake. Examination via iMac Finder shows that all files in the subfolders are duplicates of those in the main folder (which contains additional files as well). Catalog view shows many of the files in the main folder are already in the catalog (grayed out).
    Please let me know if this is clear enough.
    At some time I would like to learn how to remove those duplicate files. Could you point me to some sources giving the procedure.
    To begin with, how can I take LR3 out of the "import" mode and just deal with things as they are?

    To take Lightroom out of "Import" mode, click 'Cancel' (I assume by "Import mode" you mean that the import dialog box is open - clicking 'Cancel' closes it).
    Now just delete the duplicates - i.e. in Library grid view, select them and press 'Delete' on your keyboard (or select them in the thumbnail filmstrip, context-click and select 'Delete Photos' with the mouse).
    If you dont know which are duplicates, do tell...
    If you accidentally delete too many, you can fish them out of the recycle bin, or your backup folder if you imported with backup option enabled.
    Hope this helps,
    Rob

  • Managing files and other newbie type questions

    I'm trying to decide between FCPX and Premiere Elements. I manage most of my media with Aperture. I've learned a whole lot already in a few solid hours of use of the trial. The integration with Aperture/iPhoto is very nice and keeps me out of Adobe Organizer which I do not care for. I have a signficant time investment in Aperture libraries, so the extra $$ for FCPX might be worth it -- if I can learn it.
    It appears that FCPX currently will not directly import AVCHD (from Sony) with 5.1 -- it is brought in as stereo. Or am I missing something? I can get it in re-wrapping it with ClipWrap. But that adds $50 to an already expensive piece of software (for me.) I have an older mini-DVD camcorder (also Sony). Actually the camcorder is toast, but I have the mini-DVDs. Can I import these and keep the 5.1 or do they need an intermediate step?
    I can't figure out how to go from FCPX to Aperture, if that's possible. If I import with FCPX, do I have to turn around and re-import into Aperture? (We really like having it all in one app for browsing the photos/videos.)
    If I import with FCPX and do not optimize, I understand I can do this later on the fly if I choose to use the clip, right? The unoptimized video quality of the imported clips is not worse than the source, correct? This will save me a ton of disk space if I can use this fast, unoptimized import. I don't edit 80% of the source.
    I've figured out how to do a Picture-in-Picture type deal but I can't find in help or elsewhere how to resize/transition the Picture-in-Picture. Here's what I'm doing: We're filming a high school band. The primary video is the big picture, wide view of the band. Then when a soloist performs, I overlay a separate video of them moving into position in "picture-in-picture" type of window. When they actually perform, I would like to put in a transition where this picture in picture "explodes" or zooms out to fill the screen. I can't figure this out. When the soloist is done, I want to reverse it. This whole process looks like a perfect example of multi-cam edits, but I'm still trying to figure that out.
    Thanks for any pointers.
    -Jack

    Boerne wrote:
    Ok, multi-cam is not the way to go for this. Thanks.
    Keywords... that's what I'm discovering now. Very nice organizational stuff in there I've been missing with iMovie/PrE. I don't have that many clips yet, but eventually this will be very handy.
    I'm going away from the PIP deal. We tested it last night and even on a 55" screen, it's really just kinda gee-whiz. You don't get enough detail to see what he's doing. So I'm just transitioning now from main clip to soloists and back. The wide screen shot was totally useless in a little PIP window anyway. Since the whole show is only 10 minutes, I'll just give them two videos. One edited with soloists/visuals one raw video of the whole band for marchign critique.
    Actually, if you decide that the PIP stuff does not work, this brings multicam back into the process.
    PIP was the only reason why I advised against going with multicam for this.
    It would be nice if the end user could pick the camera angle they wanted while watching.
    Thanks for the inputs. I will read up on keyframes as you suggested.
    -Jack
    You can't offer that kind of interactivity to the user, but with multicam you can offer your best choice of angles - and can even easily produce two or more different versions.

  • Can I take a managed file and link it to a referenced file?

    Is this possible?
    I am creating a referenced library. Going forward, I know that I need to use only the referenced file to make new versions within Aperture.  But going back through my old files, I have originals and then all the edited copies.  These are only linked together in my head, because my practice was to make a copy of an original before working on it, so when Aperture imports it, it sees my copy as a new "original". I wondered if it is possible to reestablish any kind of link between my edited copies and the actual original file.
    Thank you.
    LCA

    Sorry not possible. To Aperture every file imported is an original (master). There is no way to say this import is a version of that original.
    You can come close using keywords and possibly stacks. It's not exactly what you are looking to do but at least you'll be bale to locate and group all similar images.

  • Managing files and folders with Pegasus R6

    Sorry if this seems like a really newbie question, but it has me stumped.  Oh, and hello everyone! This is my first post on here.
    I just purchased a new 27" iMac and the new Pegasus R6 (12TB) drive.  So now I am getting prepared to offload my old iMac with all the pictures and videos that have caused it to nearly grind to a Windows speed.
    My software is Aperture 2, Adobe CS4 and Final Cut Studio express.
    On to my question... Once I had all the software installed, and the Pegasus drive was done setting up (overnight), I dragged the Aperture 2 library over to the Pegasus drive.  It surprised me to see that the orginal library stayed on my iMac and a duplicate was now on the Pegasus drive.  I thought that maybe it was just a nuance in the way Aperture is.  So, I took a couple of photos that were just sitting in the iMac under a newly created folder and dragged and dropped those into the Pegasus drive.  Viola', those copied as well.  Now I have a copy on the iMac and the Pegasus.  I cannot figure out why the items are not moving, but duplicating.
    Any thoughts?

  • New library and vault?

    Hi i have been storing my aperture library on an external 1TB HD.
    I have kept a vault on an identical drive.
    both are nearly full now, so i was wondering.....
    what should i do?
    im all ready to but a couple of new drives to continue, but do i have to create a new library on the new drive and new vault on the other?
    if i do this, does it mean i cannot access the old library?
    im at a bit of a loss, so any advice is much appreciated!

    I think you should be looking at referenced files at this point. See below
    if i do this, does it mean i cannot access the old library?
    No, but you would have to switch back and forth between libraries- an easy task in A3 but IMHO unnecessary
    im at a bit of a loss, so any advice is much appreciated!
    Here's what I would do in your situation.
    Let's say you now have four drives: one with your library, one with a vault you can't connect to (per your other thread) and two that are new, empty and formatted OSX.
    1. Create a new vault on one of the new drives.
    2. reformat the drive with the vault you can't connect to
    Now you have a library drive, a vault drive and two blank drives
    3. begin using referenced files for new projects and maybe some existing projects (By relocating masters) on one of the blank drives.
    4. Use the other blank drive as a back up for your new referenced drive. You could use Time Machine for this if it's not already in use elsewhere- which it should be- but SuperDuper would be ideal.
    So you have four drives:
    A3library (on site)
    A3vault (off site)
    A3referennced (on site)
    A3referenncedBU (off site)
    Make sure you fully understand Managed Files and Referenced Files, and how they are backed up. When setting up the file structure on your referenced drive, remember that "failing to plan is planning to fail".
    End of sermon

  • Image size problem after converting from Managed files to Referenced files.

    I recently moved to Referenced files for all my images. I use a plug-in (Graphic Converter 8.8.2) to resize all images to a consistent size (1440 pixels wide, landsacpe format) for a web app that I use (Sandvox). With Referenced files, when I drag and drop the externally processed image, it shows up at exactly one-half the correct size (720 pixels). As a test, doing exactly the same opeartion with an Aperture library utilizing managed files, there is no problem...it works as expected.
    As a temproray work-around, I found that instead of dragging and dropping, I use the Aperture Export function, everything is correct. This is not really what I want to do because I have a lot of images to process.
    This is Aperture 3.5 and Mavericks,  but the problem was there with with Aperture 3.4 and OS 10.7.5.

    Thank you for the suggestion and running the test. I changed the Preview settings to 1440, and then 2560 and finally, Don't Limit. Quit and relaunch Aperture between each setting. No luck.
    But you gave me a hint: maybe the problem has to do with the images being first Managed and then moved to Referenced files. So I tried one that has never been a Managed file and everything works correctly! Don't know if this is a bug or a feature.
    Mystery solved, but I still have a lot of images to reprocess.
    Thank you for the help.

  • Managed Files still attached to deleted bundle

    I have some files that were part of a File Bundle I have deleted. Unfortunately the files still appear under Tools, FileList and appear to still think they are in the bundle I deleted. They do not appear when I search for Orphaned Managed Files and as a result I am unable to delete them via the ZLM Web GUI
    When I go into the files and click on the hyper link to the bundle it thinks its a member off I get the standard ZCC has encountered an error with a java stack message. I expected this because the bundle has been deleted. Can anyone tell me a way to delete these files from my ZLM server

    Dave,
    here are the steps to remove the bundle reference for that file. You need to run a few SQL statements against the database:
    Code:
    # psql -U zenadmin zenworks
    zenworks=# select fileid from unix_file where filename='<your filename>';
    fileid = 91668
    zenworks=# select bndlfileid, bndlid from bundle_file where fileid='<your fileid>';
    bndlfileid = 91669
    bndlid = 91666
    zenworks=# delete from bundle_file_ostarget where bndlfile_id='<your bndlfileid>';
    zenworks=# delete from bundle_file where bndlid='<your bndlid>';
    zenworks=# delete from zen_bundle where bndlid='<your bndlid>';
    zenworks=# \q
    After that you should be back at the shell prompt and best would be to restart the zlm services. If there is something in cache about that file bundle, that should be gone after the restart.
    After the restart check in the ZCC if this file is still assigned with a file bundle. On my ZLM 7.3 IR1 system (IR2 is the latest version) there seems to be a bug that I cannot delete a orphaned file from the ZCC / Tools / File List. If I select the file, the delte option does not get available to really delete it. It can be done via the database commands as well, but I would like to use the ZCC for that job. So check if you see the same when the bundle assignment of the file is gone. And please take care with the SQL commands that you do not delete anything different. Novell does not want the customer to manipulate the database.

  • Open module for managing property file and environment variables

    Looking for an open module for managing property files and environment variables (like CLASSPATH) set in a shell script. For handeling properties (preserving comments, supporting includes, appending new entries, and more) I have looked at SuperProperties from openadaptor but find certain functionality lacking. As for interfacing with common shell scripts/files containing setting for CLASSPATH, JAVA_HOME, other system/application variables another type of object editor is needed. Maybe JFIG?
    Any ideas are greatly welcomed.

    You seem wright, you hit a brick wall here with Air to find the location
    of the command console on windows...
    So in fact I never build an exe tool, but this little problem was a nice
    case to test it and I tried it.:
    I downloaded monodevelop
    -GTK# for .NET 2.12.10*
    -MonoDevelop 2.4.2*
       from http://monodevelop.com/Download
    created a console project and had an exe in 5 minutes !
    You can download the findconsole tool and the projectfiles here:
       http://greencollective.nl/temp/dump/findconsole_monoproject.zip
    findconsole.exe will reveal the path/location of cmd.exe on a windows system.
