Mandatory profile: default printer always reverts to last installed printer

The only constant is: the last installed printer stays as the default printer (user can install it). How is that tracked by the system? I cannot find it anywhere.
example printer A, then B is installed. Printer B always reverts to being the default on reboot.
a. not using gpp/gpo to set printers (several thousand pcs, about 800 printers, difference preferences in each department etc)
b. from what I have read, it is normal for the mandatory profile to revert back on reboot/logoff any changes to the default printer made by the user.
c. I have tried changing registry keys for .default, the current user, which the current user (mandatory profile autologin) does not pull from .default or anywhere else I can seed.
d. the mandatory profile itself is clean the common registry keys are empty (changing these keys to your desired printer does not resolve the issue, they revert on reboot to last installed printer)
...\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Devices]
....Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\PrinterPorts
...Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows (Device key is blank)
e. commands do not stick (Tried from powershell, vp, command prompt etc) such as:
rundll32 printui.dll,PrintUIEntry /dl /n "pritnername" /q
"ntprint /setdefault name=<printer name>
ntprint /setdefault name=<printer name>

Hi,
Please allow me to clear the current situation:
1. We are using mandatory profile, and the default printer is not configured into the profile settings;
2. Every time when installing a new printer, it will change to the default one;
3. Using command line to set the default printer won't work here;
If anything misunderstood, please feel free to let me know.
So how do we install the new printer here? Any settings that we may choose to set the newly installed as the default?
Might we consider to let the user choose which printer to be set as default using scripts? See if this blog could help:
How Can I Let Users Choose a Default Printer From a List of Printers?
If the default printer is not configured into the profile settings, and no GPP configured here, how was the default printer installed?
Besides, for domain printer issue, we have a better forum to seek help with:

  • Windows 8.1 mandatory profile Group Policy printer problems

We're a school district that is using mandatory profiles for the students. We use both Win 7 and Win 8.1 on the workstations. We're having a problem with group policy printer deployment on just the Windows 8 Workstations. I've tried using both the deployment
method in policies and the Preferences with Item level targeting and on the windows 8 ones its always intermittent. Sometimes you login and get the printers or some of them and sometimes not. Other times if you log out and back on etc. I've been troubleshooting
this for a week and have found with Win 7 it seems to always work but on our Win 8.1 ones about 50/50. The error in the Event log for that printer is this.
Group Policy Object did not apply because it failed with error code '0x80070057 The parameter is incorrect.' This error was suppressed.
What I've found that if I create a test account that does not use the mandatory profile the printers always map. Even on Windows 8.1. So far thats the only commonality. Can anyone tel me what I can look at with this. If they never worked that would be an
easier problem but its not consistent.
    Thanks
    Jason

Hi Jason, Did you ever find a fix for this as we are having exactly the same problem only with windows 8.1 computers using mandatory profiles and it's driving me mad. Any help would be much appreciated Thanks Dan

  • Default printer, in RDS W2012 roaming profile, disappear sometimes

    Hello!
We have a problem with the defaults printers in my roaming profiles. We have an AD W2012 and my domain users can connect to a RDS farm in W2012 too. Obviously the roaming profile works fine. In other W2012 server, I have a printServer, with all the company
printers installed. The user only must to add any printer listed in the directory to his session, because the server already have the drivers installed correctly.
The problem starts when during the day, in any moment, the user lost the default printer, he is printing 3 or 4 followed documents, and can lost 1, a message appear: The user XXX don't have any default printer in his profile!! This occurs in every moment,
but not always. Others users can print during all the day without any error, but at the next day they can get the error other time.
We dont' see any error, about this in the event viewer.
    Thanks.

    Hi Pedro,
Would you please let me confirm whether this issue occurred after anything changed (install any third-party
application or update)? Or did this issue occurred suddenly?
    à
he is printing 3 or 4 followed documents, and can lost 1, a message appear: The user XXX don't have any default printer in his profile
It’s an odd issue. Just check if have new print drivers which need to be installed.
If has any detail, please feel free to let me know.
    Hope this helps.

  • With recent update of Firefox, I can no longer set the default page, it always reverts back to the Mozilla page, why?

Why can I no longer set the default page to something else? Every time I open Mozilla Firefox, it always reverts back to the Mozilla page. No matter how many times I do this, it always reverts.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).

  • Retrieving default printer without saving it in user profile default

I need to retrieve the default printer. If I save it in the user profile, I can retrieve it with FM SUSR_USER_LOGONDATA_GET.
I want to avoid having to set default parameter for large user base. Is there a function module that can read default printer when it is not saved in user profile.
    Thanks

  • Setting default printer reverts back to old printer on reboot

Using Windows XP and my HP Officejet Pro 8000, I can set in as my default printer and the next time I boot the computer it shows my old 5600 printer.  Any suggestions?

I think I solved the problem.  Apparently the HP Digital Imaging program (hpotddo1.exe) will lock the computers printer selection onto one printer.  In my case it was the wrong printer.  By disabling the program, my computer will now accept the default designation and stay on it through reboots.  !!  RodCart

  • Web Browser, Mail and Chat Preferences always revert to default on restart

I have set my prefs to Adium for chat, Firefox for web and Thunderbird for Mail - however - each time I restart my machine - they always revert to iChat, Safari and Mail.
I've deleted the relevant pref files but it still happens.
I'm also using filevault if this makes a difference.
    Any clues?
    Thanks.

The best place to ask that question is in the Mac OS 10.5 forums here:
    Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard
Issues with Mail will get more eyes on the problem there than in the current forum, which tends to be more about hardware issues.
When you get there, searching for Mail issues is easily done by using the "Refine this List..." button in the upper part of the page. Click it and a number of sub-categories appear, one being "Mail & Address Book."
If you don't find a solution in existing posts. then ask you question, being sure that "Mail" appears prominently in the title, just like you did here.

  • Why does Firefox select the last used printer instead of the system default printer on startup?

In the course of using Firefox I selected my color printer to print in color then closed Firefox. When I reopened Firefox later on and sent something to the printer I had assumed it picked up the system default printer, a monochrome laserjet. It picked up the color printer instead. When I restart my other apps they automatically pick up the default printer. Why not Firefox?

Some web pages will pop up the print dialog automatically. In particular, pages that websites have specially formatted for printing may do this.
Are you restoring tabs that you previously opened, or starting up with your home page(s)? I suspect that one of them is generating the dialog. You could check by going to each one and reloading the page to see whether it is from that page.

  • OS 10.7 won't let me set my default printer

When I go to print, in most programs, it always selects the first lists the first printer in alphabetical order. I set default printer to Last Printer Used and it still brings up the first in line alphabetically. I tried setting default printer to Last Used. Closed the preferences and when I reopen the preferences window, it's been reverted back to Last Printer Used. I even tried clicking the lock to lock the settings, but it still reverts back. It's driving me crazy. The printer that always comes up is a wide format and I have come close to printing emails to it instead of the black and white laser printer.

  • Mandatory Profiles, Group Policy Preferences, Synchronous processing

    Hello,
I'm using Windows 8.1 Update to setup a lab of computers that will use standard user accounts with Mandatory Profiles and Group Policy to lock them down. Everything is working great with the exception of Group Policy Preferences. I am using GPP printers
to add a shared printer to the computer lab and set the default. Due to asynchronous processing, the GPPs are applied only every other time. Since they are mandatory profiles, the settings are wiped out every time.
I have enabled the GPO setting "Always wait for network at startup and logon" but it doesn't seem to have any effect. The Mandatory Profile is assigned in the user's AD object.
From everything I can find on the issue, the problem seems to stem from the synchronous processing/asynchronous processing of group policy preferences, which explains the consistent alternating working. Fast logon optimization is always off when using a
roaming user profile, which is the case of these standard users, to my understanding. I also configured cached logons to '0', disabling cached logons. The computers (configured to automatically sign in with SysInternals' Autologon) received an error (no logon
servers available) trying to sign in before the network was ready, showing that they are ignoring the setting. Even with waiting for the network and signing in manually, the GPP printers are only successfully added every other time.

    2008R2 functional level
I have created and recreated GPOs to test creating them on the DC and a Windows 8.1 Update computer, with no change in outcome.
I have also tried setting Startup policy processing wait time, run logon scripts synchronously, and GPP Printers processing behaviors. For the latest testing, I created a new OU with blocked inheritance and created a new GPO with just the key settings to
wait for network, install the printers, and use the mandatory profile. It still only worked every other time.
I am currently at a loss for a good way to add the printers to the mandatory profiles. I have hacked them into the HKCU of the mandatory profile but I feel that is a kludge solution and not very sustainable. I have tried a logon PowerShell script but had
    no luck.
TL;DR: Win8.1Update, Mandatory Profiles, standard user: Every other restart, GPP Printers are added perfectly and the desired outcome is reached. Every other, other restart the printers are not added.

    Hi,
I'll involve other engineer to this thread for more discussion about your problem. Please wait patient.
    Thank you for your understanding!

  • Cannot set Windows 7 default printer in Boot Camp

I discovered today that I cannot set a default printer in Windows 7.  I right click, and try to make one of the printers default but there is no check mark.  One of the programs that I use says I do not have a printer installed.
I can print to my printers using Word by selecting the printer that I want but cannot select a default in control panel.
If I access Windows programs using a VM Fusion, the program that says there is no printer installed in boot camp, does not give be this message and I can select a printer.  BTW, I have never been able to select a "default printer" using VM Fusion.
The only thing unusual is I had to reactivate Windows for no apparent reason last week and I cannot select all of the Themes available in the personalize menu.
It is difficult to pinpoint when the printer issue started because I mainly access my Windows programs through VM Fusion.  I am guessing the changes happened when I had to reactivate Windows
I am away from my iMac currently and was wondering if anyone has experienced this and/or have a suggestion.?
    Thanks,
    Roy

    Update.
Apparently this is a Windows Registry issue.  Looks as if there is a VM Fusion driver set as default (thinprint??)  I cannot delete or modify this registry key.  A new profile solves this issue and I will have to copy everything over to the new profile, if I cannot get this registry key issue solved.  I will post on a Microsoft board to see if there is a solution.

  • How to set default printer in CS5

I've been using Photoshop CS5 x64, in Windows 7 x64, ever since it came out. I print photographs on an Epson Stylus Photo R2400. I also have an HP Laserjet, for printing documents.
Whenever I am printing photographs, I change the default printer, in Control Panel, Devices & Printers, to the Epson. Until the last couple of weeks, this has always put the Epson in the default position in the 'Printer' field of the Print Dialog.
But now the printer field always shows the HP Laserjet.
This isn't true in any other program. MS Word 2010, Adobe Acrobat, Notepad, Opera, Internet Explorer: they all show the Epson as the default printer. So it seems more likely to be a Photoshop problem than a Windows problem.
I have the latest Photoshop update, and Windows 7 Service Pack 1. I have the latest drivers  (2007) for the Epson. And I've trashed my Photoshop prefs.
Is there a solution to this problem?
    Thanks
    Mary

    >>If you change the printer in the Photoshop Print dialog, choose [Done], then re-save the PSD, does it come up next time with the proper default?<<
Well, yes it does, to my surprise--whether I save as PSD or TIF. This is true both of new files (via file dialog) and of existing DNG files newly saved as TIFs in Camera Raw.
I've now tried opening old files other than the ones I've been working on for the past month. They all default to the Epson printer--not surprising, since I always save files after printing, so that the print settings stick.
The problem files are the ones I've worked on recently. When opened, they all default to the HP printer. So I'll have to open, change Print settings and save about 200 files. I'll write an action.
I can't imagine how they got set to the HP in the first place. I've tried turning off the Epson and creating a new file: the Print dialog still says Epson R2400.
Thanks for your message. It got me to focus more closely on just which files were problematic.

  • Default printer settings in Reader X? Why must I reset my print option each time?

Each time I try to print a pdf, the application takes over the printing duties instead of allowing my printer options to come up. There is the option to set printer options by clicking on the "Printer..." button. This is annoying to be sure, but the big problem is that I have to do this each time I desire double sided printing, which is always. If the application demands control over printing, it should be able to utilize the features offered by my printer and set a default print option. In the very least, it should used the last printer option selected. Is there any way to do this? It is annoying and often wastes paper as I use command P/Enter to print when I'm in a hurry.
On the up side, I love that it was easy to set the default page view/zoom options.

USB interface? Are you using one of those USB to parallel adapter cables?
They don't allow two-way comm - which is how the printer tells the computer "done with this page."
You can try this special USB driver that deals with this problem:
    http://buymelunch.org/printing/usbtb/
Any reason you stopped using network printing?

  • Why doesn't printing use the default printer?

I have two main printers to use at home and whenever I print a web page, Firefox automatically prints using the non-default printer. If I select the default printer from the drop down list, it works fine. I shouldn't have to select the default printer every time I want to print.

Note that NONE of the replies answer the original question.
The key word in the question is "'''Why'''" and "default printer" refers to the system's default printer.
Why does Firefox behave differently than any other Win app when it comes to printing, ALWAYS use the system's default printer UNLESS the user changes it (''and NOT memorize the choice'').
To put it another way, '''Firefox should NOT always use the last printer selected'''.
'''This non-standard printing behavior should be changed.'''
