Map F5 as a backspace

Just got a 21" iMac, but noticed the Delete key is normally where backspace is, and I have to do a Fn+Delete to get a backspace. I notice on the keyboard that came with it F5 and F6 don't have any special features on them like volume, brightness, etc. Is there a way to make F5 act as a backspace?

On every Mac I've ever used, the key marked "delete", sitting to the right of = and above \, performs the backspace function. If yours is working differently, then something is misconfigured. Or your keyboard is defective. You need to figure that out rather than try to work around it by mapping a function key.
The most likely cause is your keyboard layout setting is incorrect. Go to System Preferences -> Language & Text -> Input Sources, select U.S., and make sure nothing else is selected. See if that changes anything. If not, try creating a new user account, and see if that account has the same problem.

  • Bug 10.1.3.0.3.3412: Backspace key not mapping to backspace

In version 10.1.3.0.3.3412, the mapped "SHIFT-BACKSPACE" works as a backspace. However, whenever I hit the BACKSPACE key (only), no backspace happens. When I try to map this key to backspace, the app is not recognizing it. Previous versions of 10.1.3 worked fine.

    Hi,
I just pulled the release from OTN and installed it in a fresh directory with no migration of older versions.
I also tried internal builds that don't come with a JDK and instead I am using JDK 1.5_007.b3

  • X11 issue:  e key is mapped to backspace in X11 apps

I've had this problem before but can't remember what I did to get it fixed...
I ssh into my office linux machine to launch firefox and have it displayed on my Mac Pro here at home. This works fine. The one problem I have is that when working with firefox (via ssh, displaying on my Macs X11) the "e" key is mapped to backspace.
Office machine is Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Desktop, with firefox 3 beta. I guess I'll try Opera too...
    Any ideas?

This is most likely to an errant "xmodmap" somewhere in the shell init scripts on the Linux box. If you can run "xev" on the Mac you should be able to see which keycode the "e" key is generating. If you then look through the shell init scripts on the Linux side, you'll likely find that this keycode is being remapped to the backspace.
To make matters worse, this remapped key doesn't just apply to the X clients invoked via that particular ssh session, it will affect all X clients running on your Mac.
What I would suggest is modifying your init scripts on the Linux side so that they never invoke xmodmap for remote connections. The syntax depends on the shell you use, but it will be something similar to this (shown for tcsh):
    if (! ${?REMOTEHOST} && ${?DISPLAY} ) then
    # Make sure backspace is correctly mapped
    xmodmap -e "keycode 22 = BackSpace"
    endif
In fact, I'll wager you have an xmodmap line almost exactly like that. I note that on my FreeBSD machine keycode 22 is what my backspace key generates, but on my Mac keycode 22 is what my "e" key generates.
Yep, I've been down this road before on other operating systems. I actually thought my keyboard had gotten fried because the "t" key stopped working altogether. Turns out it was an errant xmodmap on a remote machine.

  • Backspace starts working as delete?

    Hello,
Since two days ago I'm experiencing a very strange problem with my keyboard/OS. When I press the backspace button, the OS recognizes it as (forward) delete. Although, when I press backspace as some combination of button, it's recognized OK. I've checked the keyboard layouts (this also happens on foreign keyboard maps) and reset the keyboard shortcuts to defaults, but nothing changed. Furthermore, I have ControllerMate installed and it also reads a delete. I'd be very grateful for any ideas on what to do in this situation. Thanks!

And I think I answered my own question...  I feel kinda dumb?
I've been creating new files inside the Paladin project.  In any document in that project, that was included or that I created, the backspace key doesn't work.  But, I created a new project and then some files within that and it works fine.
So, ultimately user error.  But, weird for sure.
    Thanks,
    Gino

  • Htmleditor and keystroke and backspace

    hi:
i got a problem and have been gnawed for weeks.
i am using textpane to implement a WYSIWYG html editor. i wanner do an action when the BACKSPACE key pressed, but the action should occure before the letter be delete from the screen or model .
    how can i do it?

    Hi,
    you can use the editor's KeyMap and override the respective keystroke with your action as in     Keymap map = getKeymap();
        KeyStroke bs = KeyStroke.getKeyStroke(KeyEvent.VK_BACK_SPACE, 0);
map.addActionForKeyStroke(bs, new MyCustomizedAction());If the original action (delete letter) is to be done after your customized action has been performed, you can create a customized action which accepts another action in its constructor. In this constructor you then pass the original action for backspace and call this action from your customized one.
See a working example of the above in class SHTMLEditorPane of open source application SimplyHTML at http://www.lightdev.com/dev/sh.htm

  • How to press backspace using bootcamp

    hi
I have recently loaded bootcamp onto my macbook.
I know that when using macbook to press backspace all i have to do is hold down the fn key and press delete.
How do i do this when using windows on my macbook. I have tried several different things. Its a bit frustraiting when using word for example and i can only press delete not backspace.
    Thanks in advance

First of all, let me clarify something. Backspace in Windows deletes the character to the left of the cursor, to do this just press delete key in bootcamp. Delete in Windows deletes the character to the right of the cursor, to do this just press Fn and delete key while using bootcamp. If you like you can use input remapper to map a key you do not use (enter key at the bottom for me) to perform as delete.

  • Ovi map on n97

When I got my n97 my map was working, then i had to deleted someof my memory on my c drive but I dont no what I did because now my map doesnt work and need help getting it back online. When I go into it now it say system error but I have the ovi map safeware 3.1..............HELP!

nothing you did all you could just fine. ok try the first code after you take out the battery for about a minute
and see if this helps any also in the c drive go through the file manager and try to remove the cities folder it will self replicate but it might have the old maps data that you dont need and it might be causing an issue
With all these operations I recommend you TAKE OUT MEMORY CARD and DO A BACK UP OF YOUR STUFF!!!
NOTE: In front of the hash key ( #) there is also a STAR key that people often miss and state that the code does not work.
1.. *#7780# - Restore factory settings - resets all the settings to the default ( you will not lose any data) Make sure you back up your data as you will lose all of it when you perform option 2 or 3 on this list. The default code for ALL operations listed here is 12345.
2.*#7370# - Reformat your phone (out of the box, tho keep in mind that most newer nokia phones at least n series, e series and s60 based phones have udp - user data preservation so not ALL data may be lost. still it is a good idea to always do a back up of your stuff.)3. This you perform as a last resort. Nothing else is working. If the phone is not showing any activity, proceed with hard formatting , turn off your phone, hold the following buttons while pressing the power button. (the default code is 12345)
    3. hard reset - hold the following buttons * (star key), 3 (number button) and talk/green key. turn on the phone and do not release those buttons until you see the Nokia boot up screen. once you feel the phone power up you can let go off the power button while still holding all three buttons ( for Nokia 5800XM - use the following buttons to do a hard reset, /GREEN/RED/CAMERA keys pressed all at once on power up. this will only work on 5800's that have firmware version 20... and up. ) For Nokia N97 (unofficial version but works) is SHIFT /SPACE BAR / BACKSPACE while holding the power button. Again do not let go until you see the handshake screen.
If these codes are not working the only thing for you to do is contact your Nokia Care Center/Service for assistance.

  • Keyboard Mapping Incorrectly at Bootup - not consistent

Not sure if I'm posting this in the right place, but here goes.
I have 2 users that both have 15" G4 Powerbooks with OS X 10.4.6 loaded on them. They're using a standard image that's used for all our computers. So far we have have never seen this particular problem until last week.
Occasionally on bootup the keyboard maps incorrectly. The systems are set to boot to a login screen which the user cannot authenticate with as the incorrect letters are being typed. This has only occurred while they were offsite and using airport so I have been unable to verify the keystrokes. The only mapping they remember was that the "L" key mapped to one of the volume keys and "delete" (as in backspace) mapped to an elongated parenthesis, but they weren't more specific than that. I've since re-imaged a third machine with the same specs and swapped with one of the afflicted powerbooks but have been unable to replicate the problem.
I've checked the International preferences and he's set to a U.S. keyboard with nothing else selected. Verified and repaired permissions. Checked his fonts.
Has anyone ever seen this? I'm completely stumped.

Sounds to me like one of your Shift keys is stuck--holding down the Shift key while starting the computer puts it into "safe mode."
Might be easiest to bring the machine in and have a tech take a look.

  • Where is the DELETE key -- and I don't mean "backspace"

Every PC of any stripe that I have ever owned -- and we're talking a lot of machines in nearly 30 years of this -- has had two 'delete' keys.
One is a backspace key -- it erases characters in before the cursor. It's usually found above the enter/return key, where the backspace key used to be on those old-fangled typewriter machines.
The other key was a "delete" key -- which would erase characters that apper AFTER the cursor. There the backspace key would erase backwards, the delete key would erase forwards.
So, where is the DELETE key on a Mac keyboard? Is there some combination of keys that will serve that purpose? Or does somebody really think I'm going to move the cursor to the end of some place and delete backwards ALL the time?
I read in yesterday's Wall Street Journal that Steve Jobs doesn't like buttons, but this is ridiculous. It could, in fact be a fatal error... I've still got 10 days to take this thing back...
    --PS

I don't suppose there is any kind of utility program that would let me re-map they keyboard, so that I could make, say, the "enter" key at the bottom into a "forward-delete" key (I never use that enter key, my hands are trained to use the "enter/return" key where it's always been on a typewriter -- yeah, I'm that old...)
Either buried on the Mac somewhere or a third party program that would let me do that? Would sure make the MacBook more liveable... I delete a LOT!
    Thanks,

  • Changes to no-latin1.map

This is probably not the place to post this, but I really don't know where to post it.
I started setting up a new arch install today, and hit the wall with an annoying problem after booting into the installed system.
I have a Norwegian keyboard and on previous installations I've used the no.map keymap, which had all the necessary norwegian special keys,
and mapped to the correct characters with respect to the physical keys. The no.map no longer support the æøå characters.
    Then someone decided that
the no-latin1.map should change the behaviour of two keys - delete and $ (maybe more keys, I have not tested all). I'm used to that delete removes the character at the cursor, while backspace removes
the character to the left of the cursor, now both keys behave as backspace. The $-character is produced by alt-gr + 4 on norwegian keys, but this is now changed
to shift + 4. Easier you say? Well that is untill you are using another computer, and I use a number of computers during the day (some windows computers, some that I don't have admin rights etc.).
The $-character is frequently used in many programming lanugages, and this will confuse me.
Bah... Maybe I'm ranting on about something that isn't that important, but why "fix" something that ain't broken. And if one really desires some changes, do it for yourself, and
don't push it upstream. I'm a bit tired, and don't like to spend a lot of time searching for the source of an unnecessary change.
Anyways, I've changed my local no-latin1.map back to what it should be - according to all other systems I use.
Is there a way to make sure that pacman does not update this file?

Why not rename it to something non-standard and tell the system to use that map file? That way, if no-latin1.map ever gets fixed up, you'll still get a copy.

  • Vim and the backspace/delete key...

    Hi folks,
Whenever I'm editting a file in vim the backspace key, rather than removing the preceding character, adds a '^?' character instead. The delete key on the other hand behaves like the backspace key should.
Can someone remind me on how to establish normality please...
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi again iBod,
The answer to fixing vim is described in :help fixdel. Entering something that looks like the following in your vimrc will cause the delete key to behave like 'x':
    set t_kD=^[[3~
However, the part after the equal sign, '=', is a mnemonic for <ESC>[3~ and can be entered in vim or the shell with the following key sequence: (much like in the stty command)
    <Control>-v,<Delete>
where the <Delete> key is the one you want to map. This is more or less a general principle. <Control>-v "escapes" the character that follows it, causing it to literally be printed into the terminal window. All you have to know is to what "action" (here t_kD) to map it.

  • Wireless Keyboard Issues - Backspace not behaving

    this is driving me insane.
Ive spent hoours lookign for a solution and it's making it almost impossible to get on with any work.
Everything was fine, never had any problems.
then I changed the batteries on the keyboard. I think i went from one set of recharageables to another.
the biggest frustration is the behaviour of the backspace key, which does nopt backspace and delete as it should.
It now deletes to the left!
Also the arrows do not behave as they used to do and I'm unable to type a capital t.
I've tried everything, i.e. turnign it on and off, re-pairing, going through the keyboard settings, resoring everything to default etc etc
Keyboard operation reverts to normal operation if I turn it off and on , but only for a few minutes.
I thoughth it might be something to do with the rechargeable batteries, so replaced them with alkaline. - no effect.
    HELP!!
the only clue that something might be wrong is, when Ive done some kind of keyboard key test where you are shown a layoput of the keyboard and it highlights the key you are pressing. he keyboard map shows the arrow on the backspace key to be facing in the opposite way to the way it actually is!
Also Ive noticed the bluetooth symbol at the top of the screen has the 3 dots horizontal  -  which i thought indicated low battery, but the battery is fine as Ive just replaced them.

  • Spilled some tea on my laptop and now the backspace key doesn't work!

    Hi All,
So I spilled some tea on my macbook today. All over the ekeyboard. Thankfully everything is working perfectly fine except my BACKSPACE/DELETE key, which I hve come to realize is super important even just writing this message! Does anyone know how I can fix this? Is my computer forever going to be without a functioning backspace key? What can I do? Do you think the apple store can fix it??? HELP ME PLEASE THIS IS SO ANNOYING!

You may be able to 'remap' keys on the MacBook's keyboard, so as to assign a new purpose to one of the keys you'd otherwise not use much anyway; such as the small "Enter" key in the bottom row of the portable; a remap of this should not affect the larger Enter key, so you can re-purpose of the small one so it performs a Delete.
The 'arrow' keys allow a left-direction cursor movement without an erase; sometimes, the FN key can be used to control alternative functions; not sure how complex the commands or assigned functions can be & still work.
There had been a few free remapping apps and guidelines to help Mac owners adjust their built-in keyboard for use with Windows under BootCamp, Parallels, for dual-booting in non-Mac OS X; or other virtualization schemes to use the main keyboard for custom functions. Some of these can be assigned to work in one OS.
The idea of trying a known-good external USB keyboard, to test the computer's hardware beyond the issues you've found troublesome after the built-in keyboard was exposed to liquid, would be best to test the chassis and logic circuits for damages beyond the keyboard assembly.
The built-in keyboard issues where a single key does not function after an immersion or liquid spill event, are unlikely to be cured by simple replacement of a single key-face; and the individual key-switches are not seperate components to be changed out. The keyboard and touchpad can be removed and replaced by a skilled and trained technician. The rest of the MacBook should be inspected and tested for damage, too.
Depending on your exact build model version of MacBook, the keyboard, touchpad, and upper half of the lower case assembly has different parts and construction processes; so some of the online suggestions and YouTube videos posted there by other users may viewed with this in mind. Several upgrades occurred under the skin of these computers; so do the details on how to access or repair/replace internal components.
    The iFixit online instruction pages may have some information on how to replace the built-in keyboard; if your model build version of MacBook is one of those not too extreme for a non-expert to attempt a repair. The warning as intricate details go, usually implies you could do damages inside the computer in addition to the main symptom and issue(s) you initially seek to resolve. Be ware! {Like on old world maps: of dragons, etc.}
You could look through search results to compare videos posted by well-intentioned users, to see which ones may appear to be more like the exact model MacBook you have. A more positive identification of your portable would be required to get correct parts and perform detailed procedures properly. These generally do not have general parts; details inside the MacBook line changed many times over the years its been made.
Several leads appear in a search based on these words in a google browser:
    replace macbook keyboard
Some sticky keys and individual keyface replacements are noted; however if the liquid damaged more than the keyboard you'd have to troubleshoot the computer to know for sure. One way to tell, is to attach an external USB keyboard and see if the actual functions themselves are still working. Liquid can also cause corrosion later on, so a temporary fix may involve a superficial symptom. Other issues may follow later on.
    • How to remove/replace a single Keyface on MacBook keyboard:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=75IddbU4eSo
    • iFixit Guides -- for macbook:
    http://www.ifixit.com/Browse/MacBook
The key itself may have some gunk within the parts, layers are as noted in the first youtube video linked above; but the liquid may have gone on to find places to cause further grief at a later time. Or the symptom you note may imply damage beyond the keyboard already has taken place.
You may have to make an advance appointment to see some genius or product expert, and plan a time to take the unit in. Or contact some place who can do the work, and who are authorized experts, to have them inspect the computer and give you an estimate of the damages and a proper cure. Sorry that I don't have a simple answer; and have already been interrupted here while trying to put together some kind of a reply. Like getting my mind wiped clear more than twice, when someone comes along & starts talking nonsense, while I'm already busy (doing three things) and one more is an overload.
    Hopefully this helps somewhat...
    Good luck & happy computing!
